Just a curiosity/chatty topic. How many of you actually get into roleplaying in 14? What kind of roleplay do you do? What's your character like?

Tried it, but roleplay was mostly localized since Zodiark isn't all that with RP. Best I got has been in a Linkshell with friends and with my FC.
I generally tended to play two characters, though: my main, who's a Bozjan resistance veteran and his Garlean brother.
My main kept his father's gunblade and tried to learn how to use it once he joined the Resistance, and kept his father's values to heart. Not only was he traumatized by the events at Delubrum Reginae, he also got caught by the Ajora cultists who took to replicating Hashmal's sacrifice to revive Ultima. It failed, naturally, and he managed to resist the transformation long enough for the cure to be administered in time. Since it wasn't full-on tempering, it still worked. But his aether is a little wonky with fire and earth because of that, so he needs to be constantly monitored until the effects can be negated completely.
On the other hand, his brother was the exact opposite. He rejected his father's values. He saw Gunbreakers and his father as failures who "lied" to themselves and the population, pretending to be worthy protectors where they were just people in high positions with no idea what they were doing. Eventually it led to their incompetence (as he perceives it) when it came to protecting Bozja, and the loss of his mother. So he embraced Garlemald altogether in a bid for power and joined the IVth Legion. He's defected since the Civil War in Garlemald started. He hopes to take a group of Bozjans, Dalmascans and Landisians, as well as several other members of different legions, to take the broken capital and establish a new order with him as the leader.
But, again, didn't do much with them. Can't do much when there are no chances to explore that :|
My only major experience was serving/cooking in a coffee shop owned by Bozjan refugees in Eorzea. The whole thing was framed as trying to expand on Bozjan history and culture by serving food and making up the lore of how the dish came to be. Was pretty chill and wholesome if you ask me.
I'm thinking about getting a fantasia & name change for my alt so I can RP as Joe Biden.
I'm not a part of the RP community & have little experience in it, but I figured I could give my fellow teammates in daily roulettes or peeps I pass along the way in the open world a chuckle.
used to rp, but largely stopped by stormblood's end due to swiftly waning interest due to the story direction and community toxicity, then completely stopped in shb. honestly, i wouldn't exactly say the game's world has been all that conducive for world rp since like shb's leadup. like, the source's events basically paused for a whole expac for the wol's isekai journey, then they come back and it's all "teehee the empire collapsed overnight". then ew's events happen and resolve so fast that there's basically no real effect on the world, lol. just goes "the world's endi-- oh wait, no, everything's fine now".
Mao is always in RP modes. Mao is feral dragon kin. Is funs!
I was a wandering bun warrior in one of my previous fantasia days. Now I am in my demon phase I suppose.
Well my offer of RP always stands haha. Feel free to add me on discord (Zebra #0489) if you wanna discuss further, maybe shadowing what my group does to see if it'd interest you enough to actually have an alt on Aether. Of course no pressure, having to make an alt because of region locking sucks lol. My group does rp all the time with random scenes and big plots. (Offer goes out to anyone too)
My character is from a hick farming village in Ilsabard that was occupied by Garlemald's army rejects, so horrible treatment etc. He fled, and now travels Eorzea as a traveling farmhand/animal healer. He's very shy but over the course of his time being RP'd he's somewhat overcome it and has managed to grow a bit of a spine. He also has a really bad habit of using himself as a shield for others, even when maybe not necessary.
I role play from the beginning as I pick my character(female Hyur) I role play as a sexy, dancing, Lara croft style, kik ass player. I main a healer, tank and red mage as I try to find the sexiest gear in the game and then dance to the most danceable music possible. I don't erp because all of them are control freaks and want to take all of your time bull shetting around. I put a red bow in my hair, a light steel galerus chest piece, and fishnet stocking from the golden saucer with beast style nails and last but most important 2b's long boots. This outfit fit's my personality as a girls, girls, to be female, to see female, and walk female.
drunkard when visiting other player's venue and trash talk them, then pray i wont get banned for cursing them
Too many creeps and people desperately trying to have a relationship between characters despite the real user gender.
Big nope.
Zero.
Occasionally, a random player will show up at my house and try to RP me. I find it amusing for a few minutes, then they get weird (IMO) and thats about the time I say;
"Afk 15 minutes, explosive diarrhea, sorry"
and what do you know, they disappear.
Well, I do not like RP with others/random but I am currently enjoying building an alt character and making some small background even if it is basic. It has been refreshing.
I play an Hyur from Ishgard who's a botanist with a sharp tongue. She's fun and playing a gatherer is pretty interesting.
Uh...I guess I role play as a very charismatic masochist who will never impress the ladies enough to lose his V-card.
It's working so far!
One of my lala alts was rping in cafes.
I don't do it often and my main is really just a tool that I use to do the quests with. Like I'll pop out umbrellas and stand next to shorter friends so they don't get soaked. It's just spurts of spontaneity like that for me. I did justify the use of a fantasia starting ShB as a Viera as the light warping the aether of my Au Ra.
The few rare times I've tried to insert myself into on going stuff I either got ignored or I ended up breaking people from IC cause they'd be dumb enough to rp in say chat at an aetherite plaza and end up saying some really dumb stuff. To where I'd ask them if they're going to become bothered by other's comments then maybe they should go somewhere else or do it in party chat.
Another reason why I probably don't do it regularly is I'm bad at coming up with ideas for any character and I started having trouble separating emotions and thoughts between IC and OOC after I had a long Rp that took a toll on me. So instead of trying to work that muscle back into shape I'd rather just occasionally hang out at the various clubs once in awhile with friends or be a wallflower.
I'm gonna find you and I'm gonna give you headpats. Not quite the v-card but it's something. :D
I have a lot of characters, but my main is (surprise surprise) this one. She's got a carrd that has a lot more info on it than I can ever give, and my tumblr has a post for some of my alts. I don't rp much outside of friends these days, but I do enjoy it.
I have a fairly long backstory for each character I create. I usually list the events they have experienced up to their encounter with the Scions; the flaws/qualities; and the little things that make a character come alive. Do they pay attention to smells, if so, what would be their favourite? What do they secretly dream about? Do they have character traits that they can't stand in others... And, on the contrary, flaws that are obvious but that they don't pay attention to? Which weapon do they wield with ease, and which discipline do they resist the most? If you wanted to manipulate them, how should you deal with them (particularly useful for finding the character's main weakness)?
I continue this initial sheet throughout the game, retracing the story as it is told, but in a personalized way. To give a quick example, I recently climbed the BLM to level 60; and in the job quest, you meet an elementalist. For my character, it's time to take an interest in this discipline... And that's how she came back to Gridania, driven by curiosity, to learn elementalism.
On the other hand, I've never really RPed with people on a JV, and I never share these elements with players. I prefer to keep the "real RP" IRL, in D&D sessions with people I know... And who I trust. I've always had the impression that RP was something extraordinarily intimate; in general, you always put a little bit of yourself in there, even if it tends to get more and more diluted with experience. On FF, I must admit that I was also quickly put off by the sexual part that some people didn't hesitate to brandish very quickly, without asking the other person's opinion first. Without being particularly prudish, I appreciate that people know how to keep their distance... Whether it's IRL or IG.
Anyway; I guess I'm not really responding to the topic, but I'm interested in RP, so I'll post my experience here.
I kept seeing people on their plates talk about a carrd. I took a look at yours and it reminds me of a more indepth version of City of Heroes Bio. I can see myself having fun with making my own...make it as chaotic as possible.
Ouch. You wound me!
Do it again!
I don’t actively engage on RP but have had established my own head canon lore for my avatar & sketched out his bavkground etc.,
At times I like to visit RP coffee areas (hosted by RP player) and just make minimal talk but observe how others engage & it feels lively.
Very rarely for the fun of it, if I see someone getting in character trying to RP with me in game or on the forums then sure, if not I really just care to play the game xD
Good place for info, just as long as it's... mostly SFW :D I also support a very chaotic carrd, do it.
Sometimes people-watching is fun too in smaller cafes or whatever that are open x amount of times during a month. I actively encourage that when people are interested in starting to RP in the game just so they can see how it flows and works.
I wouldn't necessarily equate venue RP with a fair estimate of how RP works tbh. This isn't disparaging on venues by any means, and of course everyone's entertainment is valid so long as it doesn't hurt other players, but the RP that tends to happen there, at least that I've seen, is really sporadic and constantly interrupted by other players talking OoC or emote spamming or just running around in general, even in the heavily RP focused venues I've been to.
Maybe I'm just spoiled coming from D&D and my current group that doesn't really focus on venues and instead does things similar to D&D (except without the dice and mechanics rules and focusing on rule of cool lol).
For example, one of my friends ran a plot a while back that at a major point in the plot focused heavily on our characters' deepest wishes and nightmares. It was super neat and felt almost like a tabletop roleplaying game, but in 14 lol.
Again, no shade being thrown at venues or people who enjoy them, it's just hard for me to see them as big RP centers when the extent of RP in a lot of them is a staff member occasionally saying something IC. Then again, I'm not really a bar/party scene kind of person so the appeal of a lot of these places is already lost on me haha
Oh man I had to look up a tutorial because it's not too intuitive if you're old like I am and know some html. Here is a tutorial that goes over how to create the pages and the like though, let your chaotic dreams come true.
I agree with the idea that venue's aren't normally where you "RP" in the traditional sense. Most feel like just a place to hang out with friends or meet other people. Though I will say I have been to a few venues where there was a specific theme and it was encouraged that you RPed in relation to that theme and it was a blast. I have seen RP to the point where people go outside and have mock battles with each other using their abilities and emote chat which was entertaining. I also have a friend that was part of a Garlean RP group that would go around to different venues all dressed up and acting as you would expect Garleans to, down to treating each other with a military hierarchy which was really entertaining.
There really can be some good RP at venues if you are willing to work for it I guess.
I don't disagree with that by any means, but the thing is like you said, most aren't that and would likely give someone an unfair idea of what RP is/how it works and such. Plus, I personally don't have the interest in hunting down the venues that do when I can just grab some friends and go RP wherever whenever. :P
I am with you on not wanting to hunt down places like that. I just got lucky a few times to be honest. If I am looking at PF to find somewhere to check out by myself I will try and stay away from the "standard" PF venues and go for the ones that look different in how they advertise their venue.
My Caard.co thingie is almost done. I think I got most of the formatting down and just need to work on the text. I'll have it done in a day or two.
Yep-typically just with close friends now though. I have had a *lot* of negative experiences with RPers who can't separate reality from fantasy, people who have gotten mad when they saw me speaking to someone they didn't like, etc. I love RP but at this point, just DM me if you wanna write, lol
Gross, that's about on par with players who self-insert themselves as their RP character and then get mad when bad things happen (such as IC insults, like someone is attacking you personally). It's so uncomfy to be around.
I recently played with someone who self-inserted as their character with a major power fantasy and... it was not enjoyable for any of the other people. I'm talking forcing action on other players' characters and almost bullying people out of scenes to hog the spotlight. Like, we're playing make believe in an MMO, calm down jeez.
I even talked to them in private after one scene where they forced a major action on several characters, which led to something REALLY bad happening to my character, and they just completely dismissed what I was saying. They eventually left our group because they realized their power trippy self-centered playstyle didn't mesh well with a group who just wants to have fun together.
Love RPing, have a great group of friends do it with.
Not a fan of venues, though. FFXIV has such a vast and cool world, and you guys wanna spend it in the coffee shop of the week? No thanks.
I RP all the time! My humansona is a responsible adult who has a job and pays taxes.
This kind of…hurts actually. It may be excessive & in truth hardly anyone socializes likewise whenever & anytime.
It’s a funny void within ffxiv social “aspect”. Feels monotone & isolated unless you feel the need to join a savage fc or whatever to fill in that part of you
A have never RP in FF, mainly because I suck at RP. When I played DnD with my friends the GM usually tell me to "try to role play more". I just simply cant.
But I have always wondered, how do you RP in FF XIV? is everyone a WoL? Is just a "different universe"?
My group strays away from the main story stuff, like yeah certain canon events have happened but we as a whole generally have nothing to do with it. We all separate the WoL character from our RP characters and just exist as completely different characters within the world of 14. Beyond that we just... act out scenes in character as we wish.
Someone will say in discord something like "Anyone want to RP?" and someone will say sure and be like "where? what are we doing/what's the scene?" and just go from there.
