Joking with friends about lalas I'm fine with. The players doing the roegadyn meme wall that followed lalas around to harass them I'm not okay with.
lol potato? Meme.
Being anal about Lalafell (or any other race) existing? Yeah nah.
There is quite a fair bit of racism in-game. And while it's reporteable, I'm seeing people cross that line way too often.
Which is a bit of a shame, given how the game's message is all about how despite our differences we can come together for the greater good and how those who engage in ostracising other races are wrong for doing so. And how it leads to resentments and group us-vs-them mindsets.
Yeah I'll never understand the "I don't want this race to exist" mentality. It's freaking wild. I personally don't like lalas, but I know a lot of people do and I'm not about to be like "lalas should be deleted and all these people shouldn't have attachment to their character", considering I had zero attachment to my character at all as a miqo'te or au ra.
I'm fine with pretty much every race in this game. If anything because I think they're cool in their own way, and even the ones I think are less cool have people who clearly enjoy them.
I know I joked about Hyurs before, but that was me trolling, and that happened because I was just tired of stupid racist comments primarily from Midlander players. Otherwise I really couldn't care less, I've certainly met more Midlander players who were kind and willing to help than otherwise. And the Highlander experience is... yes pls <3
Now, what I don't understand is the community's insistence on sweeping experiences under the rug.
I had attachment to my Roegadyn, and I didn't like it that it was the race used for people trolling and memeing. The attention I got from that was pretty off-putting, and I did get comments once that riled me up. But it didn't make me change races. The comments I've gotten on Hrothgar, though? They definitely have. And I feel far more attachment to Hrothgar than anything else. Yet woe betide me if I point out that there's A LOT of really harsh crap told toward Hrothgar than almost any other race. Because then I'm pretending to be a victim or something. I'm not pretending. That trash does happen. I still remember that stupid thread where some broad came in and compared me being called a Zoophile and being told that the reason SE doesn't do work on Hrothgar is bc they think cats should be skinned alive to Miqo'te and Au Ra being called "same-y". Those two "insults" do not compare in terms of intensity. The only other race my personal experience shows garners just as much potential for stuff like this is Femroe.
There were comments before, I won't deny that. But they were rare, and it felt like the community was a bit more uniform in its acceptance of others before. Even if people didn't like a race, they weren't this terrible. But it feels like the community took a nosedive in Shadowbringers, because that's when I started seeing behaviours escalate. I might be biased because that's been my experience, but... still.
The community should do better and act as it preaches. Because if it's going to keep advertising itself as inclusive and welcoming, it definitely should be more vocal against this sort of behaviour. Rather than telling people that it doesn't exist and they're exaggerating.
Really? o,o I'd expect Galkas to be the target of some certain comments due to their bulk or Mithra due to being an all-female race. That's surprisingly refreshing.
idk why the FF14 community "changed". Maybe it was always like this and I just happened to notice it more after SHB launched, or it just changed over time. But back then it definitely wouldn't stand for crap like this. Oh people did do some stupid comments, and the "cooked lalafell" jokes were rampant. But they weren't malicious, and I remember on Reddit that the moment anyone was malicious they'd be shut down on the spot. Now it feels like there are acceptable targets. And that the line between a joke and an insult has been blurred. There's been a lot of hate toward the races, both because of stereotypes around the players or because of the races themselves. And idk, it feels like people just grew "eh" about it? When I felt that people wouldn't get away with making stupid comments before.
I think because early FFXI required you to act as a community, people tended to act much nicer. If you weren't nice, you were essentially locked out of the levelling process as nobody would party with you. If you become known as an offensive DPs (for instance) then you stood no chance of getting into one of the three to four levelling parties at your level in the Dunes.
FF14 doesn't require you to act as a community. If you are a dick, you probably won't ever see that person again.
You never heard of 'tarupunting'/'taruball' jokes? Or eating taru? People used to shout those out all the time in Jeuno (Although I remember one taru player in Lower Jeuno at the receiving end of one such 'eating taru' joke got their revenge by shouting back "Don't eat more taru, eat more GALKA!". I can't remember how the other person responded to that)...
And then there was the tail pulling taru inevitably did to mithra like me.... (yes I experienced that, out in the middle of nowhere too I might add, some taru player came up, did "pulls Enkidoh's tail and then runs away, laughing." in emote and then disappeared). But it was all in good fun and wasn't deliberately nasty or mean spirited - it was just part of the fun of playing the game.
So such things have naturally continued into FFXI's spirtual successor here in FFXIV. There's no real nastiness associated with it, it's just light-hearted silliness.
So it's all memes like the "cooking lala" jokes here, right? Even the devs do some of that themselves. It might make some people uncomfortable, but overall every race in this game has something to pick up on. Though, I will admit, I'd rather some jokes were a bit more original.
Nothing like calling people pedophile or zoophile for playing a given race, yes?
This all started in EQ :p
I reiterate.
You being called boring and unoriginal for playing whatever race is one thing. It's pretty unpleasant as it is, I won't deny it. But another thing entirely is being told that your race should die and that you're the worst society has to offer for playing it.
I'd much rather be called boring and unoriginal than people calling me a zoophile again.
People only like my character for his thighs.
Okay, and that's true. But you're not considering what I keep telling you.
To me, the issue isn't that people make stupid comments. You can easily make a stupid comment about me being a Hrothgar and say something that's annoying (but true) like how I'm using a face similar to 90% of all Hrothgar. And you could be unpleasant about it. It wouldn't bother me. Not only bc it's true, but also because it's minor in comparison to being called zoophile.
The issue is that this community used to not tolerate that sort of crap. Jokes were thrown around, sure, and it was whatever. But it was rarely this malicious, and when it happened, people wouldn't let that slide. There'd be a push-back against that sort of thing and people would rather promote cohesion and acceptance than anything else. Even among races that were least liked you still had people include them in groups. Now you actively have people excluding races and calling them really garbage crap.
Also, this isn't twitter nor facebook. We're not social media. We're a game community, for whatever that's worth. Call me naïve, but idk, to me this group had standards. They were just dropped all over the floor.
Comments like being called boring and stuff like that aren't that bad, even if they're unpleasant. Plus, odds are, it's got to do with whether a person likes something or not, and if they don't like your options, just shrug it off. They probably are ratchet themselves. But what, now we should also be okay with people being especially garbage to, idk, Lalafell, just because "lmao it's the internet get used to it"?
Ok cool. Yo Lalafell players, y'all are pedos for playing that race, the hell's wrong with you? /qed
You’re on point with this. Sadly, some people in this community seem to be okay with the hate behavior as long as it’s not happening to them personally. There are some that will gaslight what happened and justify it even. And the last will stay silent cause there are not enough people to stand up with them. I saw that post not too long ago about Lalafell players being targeted on Sargatanas in Limsa by a multi boxer just because they didn’t like them. To spend that much time worrying or even excessively caring what someone else plays baffles me.
Ohhh... so this isn't another Duskwight discrimination call-out thread...
I don't like lalafells.
Potato is not a race Ryan, therefore not racist.
Why act like this is a game-specific problem when real life society has the same problems? If someone is racist in real life, they're going to carry that over into their game play.
That's okay. I don't like Au Ra.
But I'm still going to treat you fairly because I assume there's a decent human being at the keyboard/controller behind that Au Ra (or at least until something happens that proves otherwise).
Why would you assume based off my reply that I would treat racism or discrimination as only as an online gaming thing? I myself am a person of color. Of course crap like that is going to carry over into the game and you see it all the time. The main argument of the post is that the community has done little if not nothing at all in recents time to care about how others are treated when playing different races. If you have any suggestions towards fixing such issues please post them.
Maybe because real life is a complete clusterfug with little moderation on issues like these, whereas this is a community with standards and ethics? Especially in-game where there IS such an ethical conduct to follow.
:I Like, I said, back in the day, you wouldn't find such crass comments and mindsets being so easily vocalized because the community would not tolerate them at all. Now the community sweeps them under the rug.
There are a lot of gross stereotypes attached to races that I've heard over the years. None of these are my opinion, just stating that now and I don't agree with any of the below.
For example:
- People who play lalas are pedophiles
- People who play Miqos, fem Ra or Viera are whores/prostitutes
- People who play Hrothgar are gay, into beastiality or both
- Male Ra are groomers
I honestly haven't heard much about Hyurs other than they're boring and as far as Roes go, just that they're the ugly race of the game.
And then there's Elezen, the true master race of Eorzea whose only stereotype is "haha giraffe run funny". Legitimately can't think of a negative stereotype towards Elezen players, just jokes about the race's elongated neccs and run animation.
Well, it doesn't help their case when furries flock to the race. You can make the argument of "#notall_____" but stereotypes occur for a reason, it's not a sudden thing. It would be like getting mad when people call twitch streamers groomers. It's not a 100% mark but when you can blindly throw a dart at a dartboard of 50 or so twitch streamers and get more groomers than good boi streamers then that's just noticing a pattern, lol.
