The sad state of Coils of Bahamut.

Greetings, i just had a little discussion in the game about Coils of Bahamut, because every now and then people in the NN try to find a party for it but it is almost impossible.
The only way to do Coils is soloing it on 80/90, Or on external Discord groups to organize a synched party.

The content of Coils is pretty dead in it's current state, and desperately needs a rework similar to the MSQ raids.

Coils 1-5 could be reworked to be normal 4 man dungeons, maybe make them into two dungeons instead of 5 smaller instances.

Coils part 2 and 3 need a tweak on their difficulty, maybe similar to alexander raids so they can be added into raid roulette.

These changes would add a little bit more variety to the roulettes and give new players an actual way to experience the Bahamut story early in the game.

There is still the savage version of Coils for those who seek more challenge.

T1-13 are fine as is, just like how all the older Savage Raids are fine as is. We don't need more wasted dev effort on things that aren't broken

No thanks. Synced Coils groups run daily on both NA Data Centers I play on. The only thing introducing them to roulettes would accomplish is creating a demand in the playerbase for the most interesting fights in the game to be nerfed down to the level where DF groups can clear them within 2-3 pulls. People don't do normal raid roulette for variety, they do it for rewards.

There is no Savage version of first or third Coils. Furthermore the normal Coils themselves approach Extreme or Savage-level difficulty, and the so-called "Savage Coils" are closer in difficulty to Ultimates. What you're asking for is for some mid-to-high skill content to be cut from the game so that people can see a sidestory they can already see by unsyncing it.

I'd hope any tuning they do would be closer to Unreal reimaginings rather than making them into 4-man dungeons.

There is not. The Coils are the Savage raid series from ARR. This is why they are not in any roulettes.
The Second Coil has a "savage" mode that is just the original difficulty before Second Coil underwent some nerfs while it was still relevant but it is not "the savage version" as we know the contemporary raid series to have.

I don't want the current Coils to be completely removed. I'd rather it be a Minstrel's Ballad series or something like a crystal remnant you get after completing the revised version. I think T1, T2, T4, T5 have enemies that can work as proper bosses. T3 could be a solo-instance like in Omega.

Coils is not fine, it's dead content. It can't be compared to other old Savage raids because those raids have a Normal version completable in DF. Synced PF runs are not enough for sprouts that want to do it when the few people that like to run it synced aren't awake or willing to go through it again. Say what you want about development effort and time, but it should be updated just like how Praetorium and Guildhests and Hall of the Novice and Crystal Tower should be updated: a place to teach sprouts how to play the game we're playing today.

Many people don't trust SE in making difficult content. I don't either. Many people aren't happy with what ShB changed (healer kits, stance dancing, resource management, raid template, etc). I'm not happy either. But this has nothing to do with Coils. High-end difficulty should not be centered around level 50, it should be centered around the endgame level. Whether SE continues to make endgame fight designs like they are now, or for some reason they decide "we don't want money anymore" and drastically change the entire design philosophy back to ARR/HW, is a completely different discussion. But level 50 content should be modeled after the content that sprouts are going to experience in later expansions. If future expansions didn't exponentially shift gameplay design from ARR, I wouldn't mind Coils as it is now. But it does, so I want a smoother transition for sprouts.

Lord preserve us from people who want the videogame to be more formulaic and samey. We don't need any more encounters where you heal up a raidwide at 30 seconds, invuln a tankbuster exactly when it comes off cooldown, and step into where an AoE just went off to avoid another, while the boss patiently waits for you in the center of the arena so not a single melee positional needs to be worked for or worried over. No, please, I'll take Coils, where they actually experimented a bit with mechanics.

I don't think for a moment that changing the raid design is what turned FF14 into the cash cow it became in Shadowbringers and not, like, its story, or its fanbase's relentless word of mouth advertising. Or the free trial. Or the global pandemic forcing us all to stay indoors. Or the rapid collapse of all its competition in the MMO market.

Funnily enough, Coils would work fine with the current endgame kit design with very few changes because it has more to heal and more to tank in proportion to the HP totals you have than content that's supposed to be for 'full' toolkits at level 90. The real problem with low-level content is that because Square's fostered a playerbase that expects every expansion to have 3 or 4 NEW! EXCITING! skills per job, the low-level kits get skeletonized more and more every expac to clear out button slots.

If you're getting that many requests in NN for Coils groups, why aren't the mentors on your world working together to organize clear runs for those asking?

Yes, I understand that it's not a mentor's job to give other players clears but are there truly none who have the desire to help those asking besides trying to pawn it off on SE as "the system needs a fix"?

What content in Raid/Trial roulette doesn’t fit that criteria you listed? This goes back to even ARR Hard mode. The “tankbusters” are cleaves that tickle, the raidwides tickle, the safe spots are still obvious, the boss stands still auto attacking for an entire minute, some adds pop up and sometimes you can ignore them completely. This is how all normal fights play. Not asking for any more encounters like this is asking for no more encounters at all. And the thing is, making it any harder than that will make DF groups disband because a wipe being decided by a curebot is not fun when you want to go through dailies.

Sprouts don’t know what’s going on in primals and nobody cares because you don’t see it again. At least introducing more relevant mechanics that, as of right now only show up in Castrum/Prae, will keep players on their toes. Optional content like Coils would be the best place to start introducing mechanics that are more complex and hit harder than what you see in primals. You can still die in Eden and Pandemonium, so the whole idea that Coils is going to be so easy that you can stand and bad and not die is a bit over-the-top.

I understand you want fights to be less monotonous, but level 50 is not the place for that. You are no longer new to the game, so this stuff is boring and easy for you. But sprouts have not played through ShB and EW yet. They’re being told by us, “Oh yeah coils is actually way harder than all the other raids just don’t bother playing it synced for now” and the only 8-player content they have reasonable access to is primals. There is nowhere else to learn to play with a co-tank or co-healer. That’s why I want normal Coils.

The simple solution, then, is to keep the old raids as they are, maybe relabel them all to "extreme", and create new story versions. You can still do your group runs if you like, but people can also see the story at their own pace.

Ramuh stuns require counterintuitive cures. Shiva cleaves kill non-tanks and walls imprison you. Nabriales Triple Spark kills tanks and time dilation rewards clever buff usage. (old)Moggle Mog's raidwide wiped if you ignored adds. Ifrit nails kill if ignored. Relic Hydra casts untelegraphed puddles and Hysteria AoE. Leviathan add casts Hysteria if ignored. Sophia add's ice puddle kills if not off-tanked out of the way. Bismarck is mostly an adds fight. A5N kills unless you stop DPSing and devote yourself to some mechanics. A6N is all about irregular AoEs. A9N adds must be moved and killed correctly. In A10N you can set off AoEs if you're not careful.

It's not about being easy. These fights are still easy. You can explain the mechanics I've mentioned with a single sentence before the pull. Nobody disbands for them. The mechanics are different and non-formulaic because the devs were still trying to make them different.

Who is 'us'? You got a mouse in your pocket? When a sprout asks me about Coils I offer them congratulations on having great taste and invite them to one of the Discord servers that runs synced Coils daily.

Level 50 is a perfectly fine place for content to be less monotonous, it's actually equal in importance to level 90 because there are so many more new players at 50 to be impressed by the quality. Nobody's impressed by new 6.0-style Copperbell Mines when the boss winds up for a 5-second tankbuster cast and then hits for barely more than an auto-attack, and they're not learning anything about tankbusters either.

Sprouts literally have all the content in every expansion to look forward to. They're not suffering for lack of 8-mans upon hitting level 50. Most of the new players I've accompanied through the process actually want less sidestory content to do in post-ARR because they're excited to get to Heavensward.

That could be because the biggest "side stories" of ARR turn out to be mandatory now.

I still think it would be far better for Coil to be possible for people to do through duty finder at 50, because while some amount of people want to rush through as fast as they can, others will prefer to do everything in the expansion before moving on to the next one. (Not just new players, but also more veteran players going back to replay the early parts of the story.) For narrative coherence it is better to do everything as it becomes available, as it keeps the story in proper chronological order.

In particular, not having done Coil at its intended place means that Alisaie's interactions with you at level 60 are more muted and you don't know her as well as you are supposed to in the "canon" all-prior-quests-completed version of the storyline.

Possibly? I certainly have... opinions... on them folding optional sidestory content characters into the main story. I know this is an unpopular position because G'raha is everyone's favorite catboyfriend from everyone's favorite expansion, but if Estinien's backstory from the DRG job quests wasn't required for Heavensward and Nero's backstory from the Crystal Tower wasn't required for Stormblood, then G'raha's shouldn't have been required for Shadowbringers. There are ways to write that same plotline while leaving optional raids optional and not shoehorning more mandatory exposition during a part of the game that's already one of the most boring slogs. Anyway, that feels like a tangent.

I don't think I agree that her characterization is informed by references to the events of Coils, as sparse as the references actually are.

And this is a personal thing, but it's annoying that half of the other Scions waltz onto the stage absolutely full-to-the-bung with unearned familiarity, like they're the player's best friend from childhood. It's actually fine with me to have Alisaie keep me at a respectful distance, as opposed to Moenbryda insulting me, G'raha toying with me, or Krile launching into the hottest gossip about Alphinaud. And it's not a case of them having met or not met your character before in Coils, they're just written like twerps.

So I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not being instantly intimate friends with Alisaie... rather I feel grateful that she's a different type of character on a slower-burn trajectory. I'm not sure I'd enjoy it if the changes from completing Coils were as noticeable to me as you seem to find them.

I suppose this is all just to say that it's no comfort to me for a story to be the way you think it's supposed to be if it becomes less enjoyable as a result of having its errors removed.

How many people advocating for these to not be changed regularly run them? I queued daily for Coils in Duty Finder and made PFs for weeks before giving up and unsyncing the fights to see the story.
There's no point keeping them around to not "dumb down" the game if no one plays them anymore. I'd rather see them get reworked to be more modern and able to be run more frequently than stay dead content nobody touches.

Nabriales is a joke of a fight. Tanks use a cooldown or two while everyone spams 123 until it’s time to pop the really exciting balls. There is no clever usage of buffs in the time stop part.
As I remember, old King Moggle Mog's adds were the entire focus which is why his raidwide worked as a soft enrage. They still didn’t do anything, you just kill them. With item level cheese you didn't even have to kill them 1-by-1, you just spam AoE in the middle and they die.
Garuda's sisters are ignored unless your dps is somehow getting outhealed. No one cares about the rocks.
Ifrit's adds is the only mechanic he does, everything else is spam 123.
Levi's adds is the only mechanic he does, everything else is spam 123.
Chimera stands around and does nothing but sometimes you need to Silence/Esuna something. Lightning orb is the only interesting attack.
Hydra’s Fear Itself is a start, but what is it supposed to teach a new player? It would be more interesting if it started to charge while targeted puddles drop just before Fear Itself is finished charging. And an orange indicator just before it goes off so you don’t think it’s just some raidwide fear.
Bismarck is boring, period. The water orbs are unintuitive. Even Extreme is boring.
Ravana is literally the “charge an attack for really long” fight you don’t like. Adds and the wall breaking knockback are the only mechanics that matter.

I like trials like Shiva, Titan, Nidhogg and Warring Triad because these fights have you do something. They have mechanics that are most similar to ShB and EW trials that you fervently hate and yet they’re way more engaging than stand still and spam 123. Alexander and Warring Triads were able to be more punishing because they’re optional content. It’s natural to expect a normal Coils to be much easier than what it is now but comparing it to Copperbell makes no sense.

Sprouts aren’t complaining about excess side content, they’re complaining about excess MSQ content. It’s weird to think that when sprouts are showing interest in Coils in the first place.

It’s great that you and others participate in running synced Coils daily. But you do not make up the majority of NA ignoring Synced Coils runs in PF, just like us on the forums do not voice for the majority of players in-game. The other thread had people saying “just do it unsynced for the story”. No matter how you put it, Coils is dead content.

Yes, it is ran more than other past high-end trials. Because that’s the only way to access the story. Please stop comparing it to other raids.

Coils story doesn't add anything substantial to Alphinaud or Alisaie's MSQ development that isn't already exposed in as much, if not more detail as is. It's mostly a resolution for players who experienced the final arc of 1.0~1.23b and for the bandwagon riders who joined during ShB's days to clear unsynced and pretend it turned them into 1.0 lore masters.
It doesn't need to be mandatory and it shouldn't be nerfed.

I agree, it shouldn’t be a mandatory MSQ quest and the present Coils shouldn’t be nerfed. There should be a normal version that level 50 players can choose to go through without having to wait a long time in PF.

Makes perfect sense when you treat Copperbell and the other revamped MSQ dungeons as evidence in conjecturing what CBU3's modern fight design strategy will look like scaled down to ARR levels. Dodge pattern AoE, heal up raidwide, dodge different pattern AoE, mitigate tankbuster, monger for DPS uptime. They're all like that.

I don't know why you're pointing the thread out to me, I'm literally right there commenting in it. "Unsync it" is a valid response to "I don't want to wait for PF to see this old sidestory", but also, synced Coils is already several times more active than Alex/Omega Savage, its closest analogues.

ARR doesn't lack for 8-man content at all, it has twice as many trials as later expansions, and 'normal raids' are just trials by another name.

Speaking of 'players in-game' I have my own examples (that are easily as anecdotal as yours are) of sprouts being disappointed that Omega and later raids aren't as mechanically interesting and varied as Coils.

You're gonna wait a long time either way, the T12 pre-fight cutscene is like five minutes. Imagine getting that in raids roulette for 5 days in a row.

Only with Moggle Mog and Garuda did I mention item level cheese, but those trials are still fundamentally uninteresting no matter the item level. Sure, it might take longer to kill the boss and some attacks might hurt more, but the boss is still standing there auto attacking and doing nothing for a minute. There is sparse pressure on anyone except for the tanks who have to deal with cleaves. The only difference between that and what we see now is that the boss doesn’t teleport to the center.

There was a reason why the bosses did hardly anything: there was a lot more to manage on your job. Healers and tanks would have to flick through stances to deal with any kind of damage that’s taken, DPS had to press a couple buttons to make sure their aggro was low, etc. I think that’s what you might miss the most, because I don’t see how you can call these fights interesting. However, this goes back to one of my earlier points now: Whether SE decides to continue making jobs like they are now or shift gears back to past iterations has nothing to do with updating Coils. ARR content should still serve as a baseline for future expansions.

CBU3 has only adjusted mandatory content as of now. It’s easy because they don’t want to gatekeep the story behind mechanics that Sylphies and ice mages can’t clear. Old Copperbell was not interesting. Old Praetorium was not interesting. The only difference between new renovations and the old version was that it’s the kind of easy that fittingly builds up to what’s considered hard in the endgame. Yeah, the damage is lacking in those fights, but it goes back to the item level discussion, doesn’t it? Isn’t it a fine renovation if they did hurt a little more?

Eden and Pandemonium are still hard fights for the average person. Is it really taboo that I hold faith they can still make hard content?

Sure, but then I say that those trials need adjusting as well. The reason I suggested Coils was because it’s a fine place to introduce complex mechanics. Raids are harder than trials because it’s not mandatory to clear to progress the MSQ.

Obviously the cutscenes and the short dialogue with Alisaie in the turns will need adjusting. That particular cutscene can play before you actually jump into the heart and start the trial.

Edit: Mistook that for T13. For T12, the cutscene can still play before the trial starts. It'll be kinda awkward just looking at Grandpa bird waiting for the queue to pop, but the same thing happens in Nidhogg.

The difference lies in whether the character's state is essentially the same at the end of the optional story as it was at the beginning. Estinien and Nero are not distinguishably different in personality or status from the start versus the end of their optional storylines. (I do wish they'd tidy up the post-questline dialogue from Alberic though, because it doesn't really line up with Estinien's re-entry to the MSQ.)

Additionally, if you pay attention to exactly how Nero introduces himself when he barges into the meeting at level 60, it's entirely between him and the city leaders who don't know him, so it plays out the same way regardless of whether you met him at the Crystal Tower or not.

By contrast, of course, G'raha's situation is completely changed from the beginning to the end of the CT storyline. Therefore for the MSQ to pick up the next chapter of his life after the events of CT, those events need to play out first.

For a while they did write events in Shadowbringers to make it work whether you'd played CT or not, with the time loop making it that it theoretically didn't matter whether you and present-day G'raha had been there yet, so long as it was going to happen in the near future and therefore the Exarch's past.

The CT story wasn't made mandatory until 5.3 when they wanted to continue present-day G'raha's story, which needs to build onwards from him being sealed in the tower at the end of CT. It also means you've definitely had that past relationship with him and the story can freely reference it without having to add alternate remarks all the time.

Making CT mandatory also freed up some other things. It resolves that earlier ambiguity of whether you knew Nero as an ally before he turns up in the MSQ at 60. It allowed the Eden story to have you draw on your memories of the Cloud of Darkness, because they could be certain that everyone had done it by then. It still could mean a belated reappearance by Unei and Doga in the Thirteenth.

As for the timing of requiring it at level 50 rather than later, that simply is where the story is set. Nero is fresh from his defeat at the Praetorium and Cid is in his ARR outfit. Also, the player is told to do the questline in 2.1, long before it becomes a roadblock.

That's going to be a matter of accessibility at least as much as popularity. It's in the first layer of challenging content available to players, including those on the free trial. Alexander is a long way in, and Omega isn't included in the trial content.

youre looking for problems that can be fixed so easily, simply put the cutscene before you enter the raid, like any other trial later in the game, you don't watch the whole emet selch cutscene every time you do hades or what ever...


instead of :

Enter the raid > watch cutscene > fight
change to :

Watch cutscene > queue for the raid > see how the boss spawns(skip) > fight
