Will the next extension be the last one ?

I mean in FF11 the max level was 99, I wonder if we will be level 100 in FF14 but I'm almost convinced that we won't go beyond when you think about it FF14 has indeed aged it wouldn't surprise me that we soon have an FF17 as a new mmorpg from SE everything indicates that the end of FF14 is near despite Yoshi's words

I'm sure we won't be able to visit all the worlds, regarding the subject of the next expansion I really have in mind the advanced world, I feel that the next expansion will be about an invasion of this people or something like that

No, 10 more years are confirmed.
Every 2,5 years a new expansion makes a total of at least 4 more.

And they definitely have plans and resources confirmed for the one after.

The last two could be questionable due to possible unexpected circumstances.

Imagine that there was a game with a growing amount of customers, producing even more profit every 2 years, that suddenly decided to stop making content and lose all of its customers, declaring the next expansion the last. If you really believe they would stop when the active population is now in the millions, then the logic you are using is incomplete.

If level bloat is a problem, I expect they will either stop bothering with levels and focus on horizontal progression or do a level squish (probably reduce ARR to level 30).

The graphics update would be a huge waste of resources if they don't intend to continue the game beyond 7.0

Yoshi-P had said that it was the end of a cycle with Endwalker (which started in ARR) and that a new one starts with the next expansion.

A successful MMORPG will continue, it makes so much money. And FFXIV is probably one of the most successful ones, as some are dying.

On WoW, I think it was level 120 in Shadowland then they compressed it to 60.
On ESO, it's level 50 but then starts champion levels that go way up, I've seen players with champion 2000+.

Given the record sales of Endwalker, no reason to stop. It even focuses more on MMOs than single player versions.

It's basically a Ps3 MMO, but now it's also on Ps5 and probably the sequel.

I'd say that it may be likely that they'll do a level squish/new player experience in 8.0 (7.0 is probably a little too soon).

i.e. Drop the max level back down to 50-60 and make it so that people can start new characters with the 7.0 story at level 1 or 30 with a "tutorial" setting up the story from 6.X and introducing players to some of the more "advanced" things. But, that would also cut into their skip potion revenue, so maybe not. It's definitely something that is reaching a boiling point though and something is going to need to be done.

I think they will make level cap 100 and then all other new level would be like "champion lv" which is like levels without being levels. This means a stop on new skills/spells (or a very rare new ones to be added) and new type o requirement to some "champion gears". I believe the cap for this "champion lvs" will be like 140 or 150 (increasing 10 by 10 at each new expansion).

About the expansion a new arc is about to start in 7.0 and it will develop in 2 to 4 new expansions after release. Maybe, the next arc will be the last (or they could consider making it smaller than Hydaelyn x Zodiark to bring another arc into place after).

The producer team always are at least 1 expansion ahead in production. So, as they release 7.0, the 8.0 is in development already. (story, characters evolution, new places concept art and atmosphere, etc, etc).

We have a game at it's top popularity and profit with new improviments in development (like the graphics/lightning overhaul they will implement in 7.0).

So, no reason to stop now.

Seems like to me they do intend to keep the game going for quite a long time, I mean they did as much for FFXI too but here they're investing a bit more- so FFXIV is going to be going strong for a while more for sure. Lots of server investments, graphic in a bit, instanced island content, etc. Game is going to be around for a while longer ;).

Though I still pipe dream about a new FF MMO here and there... just given the nature of some things I wished to see which seem a bit impractical here.. Like core chocobo, moogle, airship (they have introduced airship into MSQ a few times, just that's about as core as they can get given their content design- mostly I dream about owning my own like a classic FF moment in the single player games), more fluid combat and movement (inspiring from GW2, and MOBAs, perhaps in some sense), design assisted by powerful movement (so large and vertical spaces, but also designed as a sort of gameplay of on movement including mounts - GW2 has a great example, though looks like WoW is taking a hint), significantly improved memory tools (account bound, glamour log, instanced house content), improved gameplay assisted roleplay (WoW does generally quite well here, FFXIV has almost none).

Technically most of that could be done here, just some of it feels impractical.

Let's update this, it's 9 years and less than a half now :3

Time is flying away really fast !

At a guess, if there are 4 more expansion for this game, I expect to end my leveling experience at 130. There is not any real reason to change the numbering. The 'stat squish' has already happened, and there is plenty of room to get to iLevel 1000+ gear in 4 expansions as that is also just a number.

The important piece to consider: Do you become more powerful over the next expansion or not? The actual numbers are meaningless.

Sometimes, my mind goes in a same way trip as this. Like a "FFXIV - part II" or just FFXVII MMORPG.
They could use the same world and environments of XIV, but with an updated engine to do everything we see today in Eorzea with revised and improved combat, world aspects, storytelling, etc. They should do it in a future moment (maybe, 100 years later XIV or so) with another bunch of characters but considering in it's lore all that the WoL did in the past.

Or, just a brand-new game in a brand-new world like each FF game.

I really think SE won't stop doing MMOs in FFXIV... They will use it's success to make at least another one after or alongisde XIV.

From a design point of view this is the most likely possibility

I think that with Endwalker they have already started preparing for the level cap of 99 - as we currently (and uniquely) get our AF armor at lvl 89. I would be surprised if they'd surpass the lvl 99 marker - has this ever happened in a Final Fantasy game? Probably they will continue with: a) a new system (like in Bozja), b) a compression, c) start over at level 1 in a new world (like in Eureka).

EDIT: another option, d) they will stay at lvl 90 or lvl 99, as is the case in FFXI (lvl 75 previously, lvl 99 now) and focus simply on a (more) diverse amount of content. Yet another option would be, e) the next increment will be only 5 levels, or alternatively 2 for example.

I expect the final expansion of the next arc will be the "last" piece of focused content for the game and anything that comes after will be done on a skeleton crew, once in a blue moon. I take some of these predictions based on what happened with FF11. So yeah, two or three expansions before this game starts entering maintenence mode in my opinion. We can see them making adjustments for this now (focus on single player/trust/story content, futureproofing for when player counts drop.) Itll never be offline, but it will probably be in suspended animation like ff11 is.

That will happen if the active population is lower than what it was in Heavensward, which doesn't look like will happen any time soon because we are many times that. SE might make another MMO, but I expect only if they can't upgrade this one.

The problem with FF11 is that it wasn't deemed salvageable as early as 2005, so they started making a new one. This one is designed with the future in mind so they can upgrade it. We have already had ARR texture up-scaling with the flight changes, UI up-scaling for the release of PS5, mount speed increases and noticeable increases in resolution and environment detail since Stormblood. It's normal for dungeons to have npcs in the background now. We have a graphics overhaul on the way and we have been told that the bone detail can be increased over time.

These sort of changes didn't seem to happen in FF11 and they didn't seem able to keep up with their competitors because of the way they designed it (for controllers). If you play it now, it suffers from a lot of the same problems as 1.0.

It isn't as dead as people think.

Yes, FF14 is going to end once we reach 99 because that number cannot go any higher.

Nevermind the fact that FF14 is the first game in the series to break the 99999 HP cap and FF15 has a level 120 cap, but that can be ignored.

Well, the first story arc occurred over 5 expansions. Why would the second one only be 2 or 3?

I didn't realize that FFXV had a level 120 cap, and FFVIII level 100. Also good to point out the 99999 HP cap - maybe these are just relics from a time when there were certain limitations in processing power, but still, Squaresoft did seem to adhere a lot to their '99'-type of caps.

I really hope it does because this game needs another clean slate to make it more enjoyable for newcomers that might come from games that are.. well no offense but are more advanced than this game is especially from the backend. we need to start thinking about the long-term for the game rather than relying on the short-term profits like releasing a new mount or minion or race.

speaking of ff11 I truly think they need to release a sequel to that game that is more inline with how ff11 is and for goodness sake update the bloody PlayOnline launcher because wow is that thing neglected. SE has there own launcher they can use for their own games but never use it or touched it since like 2006 man. I think it's time SE starts to bring PlayOnline into the modern century and put all there games on it since it would make things alot easier for me if I can just load that up and pick to play what online service game of there's that I wanted to play that day instead of having to load up separate launchers for ff11 and ff14 and log into them separately all the time.

Level is just some arbitrary number that has nothing to do with business. They can go beyond 100 or do a squish that reduces our level to something small again if it looks too intimidating to new players, whatever.

I *wish* they were making a new MMO or overhauling this one, but there's no indication of anything ground-breaking happening. FF XIV is only in midlife and it's gonna get a boost in texture quality and probably keep churning out the same kind of content until we're old or dead. It still feels like a PS3 game to me. All the core systems were designed to run on PS3. It's only barely progressed since then on a technical level, like raised its cap on memory usage and let mounts move faster than they were limited previously, little things. It's like PS3 Plus.

Gameplay systems and interface are separate from lore so they don't even need to mention it. There's no such thing as class level in the lore.

I'm still hoping for FFXI-like content in FFXIV. There are so many players now, that surely there must be some demand and room to add challening, explorative, and social open world content that can only be tackled by a group. It's still one of the biggest mysterious, even with a lot players perhaps uninterested, that this type of content isn't there. Eureka has some small things in common, but there's little exploration, plus it's instanced, and in the end you just sort of run around after FATES.

This was never about level and more about damage/healing overflowing (from a programming point) and therefore doing nothing (or next to).

This was remedied by introducing the stat squish and as things are going now, it will be about 2-3 expansions before they have to do another stat squish, unless, in the next expansion, they squish EW stat gains (like they done with previous expansions) and have the new expansion follow the normal curve. Basically, what they done with EW, just for the next expansion, this would push the need to stat squish even further and, assuming they have a good formula to use, it would be easy to introduce as they would have already done all the heavy lifting.

In addition to what others have already said, the simple argument against this that we have already had a stat squish with zero acknowledgment of it in the lore. A level squish wouldn't be any different.

MMOs are games designed to last a long time, where as single player games need to have an end. Stopping at level 99 or 100 is a nice looking number for a single player game, but in an MMO they need allow power to go higher and higher to keep players striving for more, even if it means passing those limits set in other games.

They can do things like squish down numbers to make them easier to read and avoid server processing issues, but you're still going up in power each expansion.

Huh you're right. I looked it up and FF11 seems to be getting monthly content updates, which is incredibly surprising. The last thing I heard about it was that it's kept online as some kind of relic and is essentially in suspended animation. My next question would be why is ff11 getting more regular content updates than ff14 when ff14 is the primary SE mmo and XI is the secondary one? I got no idea lol

ff11 has a smaller team and which grants them more room to breathe and allows them to be more frequent with updates since it has less hands to go through.

FFXI somehow still makes enough to bring in a profit and content is probably rather easy to make as most patches are usually just a few minor adjustments, they also did plan a new story arc for the 20th anniversary which is this year. I went to try it as it was on sale for the 20th anniversary and I do see the appeal, but you have to like really grindy stuff and maybe have a friend to help guide you that has played before.

For all the reasons you said... the company won't just end the game or the release of new content over an arbitrary thing such as passing level 100 in the future. It is just a number. The same way that item level is just a number. Does it really matter? They'll do another stat squish so we won't have 100,000 critical hit or 1,000,000 HP. That's about all they need to do.

As for FFXI, I think raising the level cap was a mistake. I also think that keeping that cap at 75 for so long was a mistake. Seems like a contradiction. However, keep in mind the history of the game.

- First level cap was 50.
- Major patches upped it to 70 over the course of a year or so
- Rise of the Zilart came out and raised it 75
- Then it stayed at 75 for seven years

That's the problem. They raised it incrementally... then bam... plateaued for 7 years. Then they opened the flood gates to 100. There was an entire generation of players (7 years worth - longer than many players even stick with a single MMO) that spent countless hours min/maxing all their gear for level 75 characters. Then, in one fell non-expansion swoop (Abyssea, which were more like DLC mini-content releases), they blew all that away. I was gone before the cap went up. Not because I was done with being stuck at 75. But because I was trying out some other game (FFXIV 1.0).

As for FFXIV, they won't let some arbitrary number stop them. If they think it is a big deal, they'll milk two more expansions by only raising the level cap by 5 each time and doubling the effort for reach level.

I prefer just a completely different type of progression eventually that doesn't include character levels; because the whole level squish thing feels lazy to me. Numbers squish i get, that does have to happen, it's happened already when we got Endwalker- i just don't want past content to become possibly trivialized even more then it already is.

Blizzard and World of Warcraft went down a certain route to combat numbers/level bloat, i feel like this dev team can do better, i feel like they should be able to do better.

There's games with a level cap of 9,999,999 ... course, who KNOWS how this code scramble is coded.
