I would prefer more gender / race specific attire not less.
I can't believe this is on the shop but not guaranteed big money makers like Grahas set/Exarchs, Emet-Selchs, Gaius' Shadowhunter set, or Gaia's set.
Granted I personally dont want those on the shop unless theyre gonna degenderlock them and make them dyable but considering how many viera I see wearing Lyse's hair and girlies in general wearing Ryne's top or boots they'd still make a killing regardless.
tbf the past villains were Square Enix Darth Vader Clone no.12, The Pope With Spock Ears, and Sephiroth As Written By Coldsteel the Hedgehog meanwhile Emet is an actual character people give a crap about.
I personally don't care for him or the forced narrative of "oh you were bestiewesties when you were Azem so please care about the CEO of Racism" but ain't nobody gonna deny he actually had an impact on the playerbase and the others sucked and were boring.
alright but still it's clear they are very careful or don't care for adding villian sets since really all we have is Heavens ward recolor and I guess Edda counts.
I'm sure they know emet is a money maker and probably pair minion, set, hair or emote with a Hades statue, art book or music disc
*gets out the horney bat*
Could see a coffer of some version of this with the new relic grind. Would be nice to see the textures touched up and gender unlocked.
I would prefer all gear being gender unlocked.
I was hoping we'd see more old sets unlocked but then they dropped the street set out of nowhere and I was surprised.
Im hoping the valentione or songbird sets get unlocked in 6.2 I really like those sets.
Theres also nothing left in the actual game to unlock lmao unless they separate neoishgardian models but I don't see that happening.
Yeah, the double option of the new street gear is great. I also prefer having both options instead of it changing with character gender. They could give us the store NPC options. I would like to walk around in Aymeric's getup.
I'm glad someone else gets it.
Limitations in what people can wear bring out creativity and diversity in what you see. While homogenization only nets you seeing the same 3 flavour of the patch pieces. People always claim otherwise, but imagine what we could see out there if like, we all got some new RSE. Pieces that only work on one race to make a unique look. A lot better than everyone strutting around in it.
I think it comes down to the work of making new models for unlocking old gear (which it would have to be a new model), or making more models like the Street Attire which is already unisex. I don't understand these people who think unisex means "less". You get the same amount of appearances either way since you can't wear both m and f appearances at once.
Going to be a little cheeky and ask is that why every cat girl in Limsa wears the 2b bottoms? :P
I totally agree with this. I really appreciate my other games where the gear is tailored specifically for each race & gender. And I REALLY appreciate it when there are no outfits that are male only or female only as we have in XIV. If there's an outfit in the game, both genders get their own variant. That M/F only junk belongs in a F2P game...not sure why we have it here. I also wish we could have stuck with race-specific hairstyles as well. To me, it just make each race feel more unique, and more grounded in the world itself.
On a semi-related note, I also really love having mounts with unique abilities/specific uses vs. everything being the same and just having a different skin. Again, it goes towards making the world feel just that more real...even though we're all obviously just playing a silly game. While over here in XIV....OH HEY, there goes a flying chair! COOL. ._.;
Now with that said, that ship sailed ages ago in XIV. Now we get a lot of bland, very similar looking short-spiky cuts for everyone, while the others look like they were clearly designed for once race/gender and then poorly stretched to fit everyone else. Same goes for a lot of the gear (mainly the ones that have been converted to unisex after the fact). One size definitely does not fit all. Like...fine, I get it, we're sharing everything now. That's obviously a decision SE is going to continue with. But...couldn't they at least try to tailor things to make them actually look good on the races? Little tweaks could make them look better on the different shapes and genders.
Mini-rant aside, as we are so past the point of races and genders being unique, I'd love to see a female version of the Hildy outfit. lol.
Coming from the Miqo'te who has worn the same gender-and-race-neutral glamour since ARR. (o´꒳`o )
I'm curious: what would you do if the dev team did embrace the race and gender restriction you want and locked your Glacial Coat behind playing as a none-Miqo'te, male character? Would you change to add to the diversity? Or would you embrace the kawaii nature expected of Female Miqo'te?
Because that is what race and gender locking items will do; set aesthetic-expectations on races and genders.
Gender and race limiting cosmetics is not how one breeds creativity. All that will do is limit possibility and create artificial race/gender popularity. At the end of the day, all the characters are bipedal humanoids with no real reason to artificially limit who can and cannot wear cosmetic items. A woman can wear a pair of slacks as well any man just as a man can wear a thong just as well as any woman.
Now, as for the OP's cosmetic of choice being made gender unlocked, I know their reasoning before for items such as this, where it was made for a single character model and nothing else, is their go to excuse. Which, immediately crumbles, where it hits the mogstation and is made available for models, that they themselves explained, supposedly aren't the same ones. Would it have been that much more work to have it work for the female counterparts? And if the goal is to increase revenue, wouldn't making it more available do just that for a longer time?
You speak as if the game doesn't already have race popularity/gender popularity. In fact you play one of those races yourself. Having more to work with can make it possible to be more creative but the same could be said when having less to work with. Right now uniqueness is a rare thing to see and thats WITH us having many different options.
Uniqueness goes out the door when said items are available for everyone.
On the contrary, Yoshida has decided to add the Garlean gear in the future after I’ve asked him in this year’s Q&A. He specifically said that he’s lifting the ban off the Garlean gear, since the Garleans are no longer our enemies.

I completely agree with your other point.
But I suspect that the reason that they have some illogical gender locked items in the shop is to stop people from complaining that there's still a substantial gender disparity in the Mog Station offerings (and that's not even getting started on how many options have male variants which are just the same boring slacks while the female versions have unique models). Female characters get lots of unique gender locked outfits in Mog Station; male characters get... well, distressed Manderville attire and Aymeric were the last ones and they were 4-5 years ago. There have been several very appealing female-only Mog Station outfits released since then.
And then Aymeric's hair is for everyone while Lyse's/Minfilia's is female-only. I understand that it's frustrating to only get half of the items when buying Aymeric's set but at least it's an option which you can see on the shop page - I'd love to get some of the female-locked pants/boots for my male character and if the chest piece has to stay locked because remodelling it is too much effort, that's better than locking the entire set.
It's all so dumb. I want all of the male-only gear unlocked for female characters but I want the disparity corrected in the other direction as well. It won't make my stuff less unique because people can only equip one thing per slot at a time anyway; more options per slot per person means more diversity in what people can create.
(Hi FFXIV forums, it's been a while!)
How does uniqueness go out the door when everyone has excess to the same items? (´・ω・`)?
Items/outfits get popular and, eventually, overused because people gravitate to those items/outfits. You speak as if it the same thing wouldn't happen even if there was more items locked behind race and gender. In fact, it would make popular races and genders more frequent as popular aesthetics get locked behind them.
And to throw the question I asked Canadane at you: What would you do if Female Hyurs didn't have the aesthetic you wanted (which I assume is the heavy armor look)? Would you change to the race and gender combination or would you stick with the generic fantasy girl aesthetic female Hyur have?
Not at all. (*´▽`*)
My thought process is that those who push for these kind of restriction really need to take a long, hard think about what would happen if such restriction were to happen and how would it affect there personal aesthetic. With how open the glamour system is now, in terms of race and gender, things like a female Miqo'te ready for a harsh winter, a battle harden female Hyur, and so on are possible. What if the dev's image of a race doesn't their own; it would create a conflict of choosing a race because you like them but might not like the aesthetic associated with them or picking a race you might not be too interested in but like the aesthetic they were assigned.
Not that people already don't do these things but with a more open system like we have now, it gives people a better chance of going for the look they want. (❛▿❛✿)
Thing is I'm not saying you're wrong. But sorry it's not what's often seen. There's a reason folks talk about people wearing the same stuff and most people looking the same. We could have a million options but you'd still see the same few things for the most part. I haven't seen a battle hardened Female Miqo in years. For the most part they're just waifu variations of each other with the same tops n skirt. Au'ra and Viera aren't to much better in that regard.
Though admittedly that COULD be a server issue
The game in large isn't really a good place if you want to see a diverse set of outfits. People just go for what floats their boat and don't really experiment (plus a pinch of horny-on-main methinks). (๑˃́ꇴ˂̀๑)
I would suggest looking for groups or individuals who are interested in making interesting glamour.
EorzeaCollection for example is a website where people post pics of there glamour. While it does have the same same-glamour-itous problem as the game, there also a wide array of nice glamour on it for almost any taste.
Even on the forums, each race has "Show your [blank]" thread where people post pics of their characters. There are quiet a few gems if you take a look. ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ
I remember looking through that a few years back (think I posted once on there myself but I don't remember xD). But while that's a good spot to see diversity and uniqueness its kind of bad that you have to look outside of the game to see it. And that's where my viewpoint stems from
ah yes...I would like a woman to walk out of my apartment in tattered clothes like we had aggressive negotiations.
You could add 100 pieces of epic RSE that turns fem au'ra, miqo, viera and midlanders into battle hardened warriors, glorious archmages, or dashing rogues... And there would still be more casual/frilly/bikini waifus than anything else for those races.
The races are top tier waifu bait and no amount of RSE gear would majorly shift things.
Personally I'd hate to see massive amounts more locked gear, especially race locked. but if they did add locked gear I think it would be better to add more GC armors since the game treats your city state choice more importantly than your race choice at basically all times.
On topic though I wouldn't mind it being unlocked, and with some of the female outfits they've released I don't think they'd be too bashful about a female version of this glam.
In a perfect world reason I want to see more locked gear is because I would like for them to take more time and care to properly design a few sets with each races features in mind. As an example tales are often forgotten about. I am not saying the lock everything, but having more uniquely representative armor is a net positive imo. We can have both, not everything has to be available to everyone, it is only to have some things locked behind certain things.
