The future of Summoner

I'm not here to bash if the changes were good or bad for Summoner on Endwalker (even tho I personally like it), but how can Summoner evolve from its current kit with new skills in future expansions.

Personally, I like the current kit of summon rotations and their respective skill combos while waiting for the big ones (Bahamut and Phoenix), but after a while it gets repetitive doing the same 3 summons over and over, and it feels like transitioning to Phoenix and doing the exact same summons you just did is a bit lackluster in terms of variety. So I was thinking, with the current kit flow settled after the rework, wondering if they're planning on adding more summons in the future, at least for animation variety, would they add the remaining missing elements? (lightning, ice and water, aka Ramuh, Shiva and Leviathan from the ARR primals).

I was talking with a friend and she said it would add too many skills for SMN if they ever did that, which made me think of ways they could implement a new set of primals to the current kit without disrupting or making it too long, and then it hit me. Why not replace the 2nd set of 3 summons with the new ones? so it would go like:
Bahamut > Garuda+Ifrit+Titan > Phoenix > Shiva+Leviathan+Ramuh > Ruin IV (or an upgraded new skill) and repeat, adding more flavor to animations but retaining the kit flow with the same length and gameplay. So casting Phoenix would grant Sapphire Arcanum, Amethyst Arcanum and Diamond Arcanum instead of Ruby, Emerald and Topaz.

Ifrit is like a hard cast and melee combo, Garuda is a mix of a hard cast ground AoE dot and fast instant attacks, and Titan is purely instant cast weaving OGCD combo, so making the new summons be the equivalents, but with their respective attacks.

• Shiva could be the hard casting and melee combo replacing Ifrit, because she uses different weapons, including both melee and range abilities. Casting Diamond Dust on summon, and an animation with shield+sword stance for the gap close combo. Either staff or bow animation/attacks for the two hard cast abilities.
• Leviathan could be the ground dot and instant attacks replacing Garuda, having a water puddle as the ground AoE dot and some water cannon related abilities for the four instant casts.
• Ramuh could replace Titan as the instant attack with OGCD combo using ranged lightning attacks.

And adding a new gauge UI element that activates after you've used all the element arcanums for a final big hit in the combo, as the max level ability of that expansion level cap, that could also help with the awkward single global cooldown downtime there is currently after using all your arcanums and the Ruin IV GCD before Bahamut or Phoenix come up. Since SMN's main theme revolves around Bahamut, it could be Teraflare, a more powerful flare than Megaflare and Gigaflare. SMN's current LB is called Teraflare, but it uses Gigaflare attack, so a name change could easily solve that. Or keep LB as Teraflare as LB is a stronger ability, and make the new one Gigaflare or Megaflare.


I just really want more summon flavors, and I know this is mostly just wishful thinking, but it would be really nice if they added something like this for more variety if they're gonna stick with the current SMN kit. It wouldn't be hard to balance at all because it's just basically animation work, not damage formula changes, so the main (and current) combo would remain the same. Let me know what you think!

My problem with this is just a repetition of problems that other people have with long term engagement with the job. Doing as you have said which is already been mentioned several times is only a Enkindle recolor. Yes, you can summon the other 3 main summoners of the franchise. The problem is it's literally a copy/paste of the same rotation with no real change in interaction. A glorified VFX job and no substance.

If you wanted another opinion on what they could do? Fix the Arcanist elements of the jobs (Energy Drain, Fester/Painflare) and give it the mechanical interaction to upgrade the given summons to higher summons.

They could also give us a separate trance that can be used between Demi's to would allow higher summoning in between.

I know a lot of people want more summons. But just slapping on more Ruin recolors and Enkindle recolors, without actually making any change in how the player engages with the job to obtains these in anyway and only repeating the same rotation only leads the jobs stagnation. Especially if you're implying there would be no change in the rotation going into 7.0.

I love how we use all summons now but I agree, its really repetitive

No worries they are going to make mini gameplay on each summon so it feels different for new ones. Like shiva enkidle can be a long cast spell while the normal one is instant, Levi is a instant cast spell on enkidle however cast normal spell will be 1 sec or something finally ramuh can be gcd skills can hit meh but is ogcd one hit like a truck. I'm sure devs will spice it up our gameplay on next expansion meanwhile keeping our not so much button to press playstyle.

eh i think the class is just going to get another rework sense its a rushed unfinished job. and just adding more summons will just make the problem worse. smn now is just a non limited bluemage. it has no flow

it seems like sos for smn make changes and everyone complains try to fix and everyone complains a no win for smn well till they really try to fix this i will keep mine in time out .

I've had similar thoughts. Phoenix phase is just begging to have a different set of primals after it. I fully expect we'll have that next expac - I bet we already would, had this rework come along sooner.

My biggest issue is just how smn plays at low levels now. But then, that's a lot of jobs with how big the disparity between current endgame and previous endgames has become. And I hope the new deep dungeon isn't introduced so late that we have hardly any time to enjoy it, on smn or anything really, before level sync kicks in... but historically, unfortunately, that hasn't been the case.

I agree with the above. I’m sure we will get Shiva, Ramuh and Leviathan in 7.0 to come after Phoenix. I would have loved to have that now but I think they just ran outta time on the job. So for now it’s half baked. Which sucks btw.

I think we also need some ogcd summons as well. We have none. Fester and Painflare need to go tbh. They do not fit in this rework at all. That will open up spots for at least two ogcd summons. Maybe Ravana and Bismarck or the warring triad.

Im pretty sure they are just going to go the BLM route and divide the 6 summons between Umbral and Astral elements (3 each respectively). It would keep the same gameplay design and allow for more freedom i.e. you can choose which form to start in.

Example:

Bahamut (Umbral) - Shiva, Titan, Leviathan
Phoenix (Astral) - Ifrit, Ramuh, Garuda.

Plays like EW SMN but you can choose to go into either Bahamut or Phoenix at the start of the battle and it simply flips to the other once you do the full rotation. Then once you complete both trances you then unlock Judgment Trance which lets you summon Alexander. However I would like to see them have fun with SMN. Like a random chance to summon fat chocobo or even king mog with only visual differences but otherwise no change to potency or gameplay.

I mean seriously, priority number 1 right now should be to bring some depth to the job again not brand new additions to make a new Jenga tower. Things like changing the summons/trances into oGcds, allow for more uses of aetherflow abilities, less free movement tools (Glares at Topaz). Heck I wish they would bring the dots back, just give the job some distance between the floor and ceiling because at this point the difference between the two is minuscule.

one thing that could work is they way you summon the usual three in different combinations changes the demi summons

Pets are the jank of SMN and is still prominent. Having Carbuncle on the field ust to do Radiant Aegis is jank when you summon any of the Arcanums or Demi's because now it's locked for x seconds. Imagine having more abilities that are Summons, but you can't use them when you want to because the GCD Summons are taking up time, and then Demi's prevent you from using them for a whole 15 seconds. The only way this could even work, is if SMN rolled up on BLU, beat it, stuff it in a bag, and toss it in the sea to take the primal abilities it has.

The real problem with this is that it validates that the current build of SMN is not complete and to do this would require yet another rework to fix and work. Even then, this would need to be a gradual introduction of mechanical change and not something that is just thrown at the players face at 91. Just having to change how Demi's are summoned would require a rework since they're all on the same button that makes it impossible to have any choice in the matter. Doesn't mean I don't agree.

the only ceiling is rng procs. there is no skill other then rng for number damage

Well for the past 8 years it’s been a job based around dots and pets, later gaining a burst phase that invokes the idea of a summoner.

Gonna be honest. If this was the case Dark Knight would be a tank that burns it’s own HP, but because it’s an MMO they sure as hell can’t do that. Summoners have always summoned, it’s in the freaking name for goodness sakes, but they should do more then just summons. Even in past games in the series, Summoners did more then just summon. FFIV had Rydia use Black and white magic spells ranging from the basic fire and blizzard to Bio, poison, stop, break, and flare just to name a few, alongside the games many summons, in FFIX Garnet & Eiko function as a White mage/Summoner, and in just about every other numbered game in the franchise almost all characters could summon and, by proxy, do more then just summon.

So why should XIV just be the job that does nothing but summon, XI already did that before. We shouldn’t be binding Summon to the clause of ‘it’s a summoner it’s only supposed to summon’ because by that state of reasoning Dragoon shouldn’t have anything that isn’t a jump, or Bards using archery, or White Mages shouldn’t have had elemental based spells. Jobs can have more to them, then just a lone gimmick.

summoner does not mean summon out everything. they should get the class done right before trying to add anything. if they add more summons it will just be a carbon copy of what we currently have just look at what they did with bahamut and phoenix. its the fact. they wanted smn to be easy. so why would they make even more summons with each summon have there own mini rotation. the need to fix the base of the class cause right now they cant add anything that is not just a ability swap. also the blumage comment was about how the class has now flow its just a chaotic mess.

Are we playing the same job in FFXIV? Because the summoner I am playing can cast ruin, energy drain, fester, painflare, a res, a shield and a damage buff. So no we don't just summon but it is the core of the job. Yes the summoner in FFIV did use black and white magic. In FFXIV we have black mages and white mages for that. So not sure you sold me on your vision of summoner. Do I think the job is half baked? Yes I do. However, Summoners need more summons. Not black magic or white magic that will step on the toes of those jobs currently in the game.

And BLU ironically has the most depth of any job atm. You can be a tank, healer or dps and you get to choose which skills to take. Certain skills having synergy with others, not to mention status effects. How is this design philosophy bad when many ppl keep saying the jobs lack depth? It's only bad for casuals who can't grasp the concept of simple things like "tank stance on" or "dps using aoe on multiple targets". You also fail to realize that this is a SUMMONER. In FF games a SUMMONER, SUMMONS. If you have any ideas feel free to post them instead of just saying "your idea is bad"

If you want depth in jobs I think this game is no longer for you. In-depth jobs died after 4.1. All jobs are viable and all jobs are locked to 1-2 min cd bursts. No job has a niche to fill in a party because all jobs bring the same tool kit just with different animations ex. all healers are locked to an "aetherflow" system of 3 charges for their heals, or all tank stances being a trait, etc. You fail to realize this game is no longer for the "hardcore" that ARR/HW was geared toward. It's geared towards casuals and making things easier for them.

My suggestion only adds to what they implemented in EW while not changing anything drastic. If you played prior to ShB you would know that SMN used to have to go though dreadwyrm trance twice before entering Bahamut trance. This plays nearly identical but just with Bahamut/Phoenix (each once) to enter Alexander, which should be the lvl 100 skill imo. What they decide to do with each summon is speculative. Summons can provide utlity, dots, burst etc, and revolve around cycling through the stances but that is all hypothetical.

All I'm seeing is that they might go the route I suggested as it is the "easiest" way to add more summons without adding too much buttons i.e. If you are in Bahamut you can only summon Shiva, Titan, Leviathan but once you enter Phoenix, those buttons change to Ifrit, Ramuh, Garuda respectively. You added 3 new summons with no added buttons which is in line with their design philosophy.

blue mage does have depth cause there is not just one way to play the job so it works. because of that its chaotic with everything it does ie cause it is a limited job. it does not flow into smn cause it has a forced play style (unlike every other caster) where you 100% have to follow the flow without adjusting timings. also you also fail to realize old smn was also a SUMMONER it might not be a traditionally summoner in terms of older ff games but neather is drk or sam (sam being a tank in old games and drk being a dps) im not saying that the idea is bad. im saying that that the just adding summons will not fix the glaring problems with the current smn class ie the complete withdraw of what drew people to play old smn the half baked an forced rotation that is ridged as hell, and the fact it no longer fits under the category as of caster (like adding more summons could work as long as its with another class rework)


it would have been ok with some withdraw but they took away abit to much without adding anything to fill the void, weaving, hard casting, bahamut and phoenix actual being 2 different things, and management. people would be ok with the rework if it had more connections to the other casters and what made old smn good not the dots but the ceiling. you can make an easy class with a high ceiling of improving. smn right now has none. the only way to improve is just rng procs on crit

You obviously can't have build-your-own-kit type of "depth" for a dedicated DPS like Summoner, as always there would be just 1 way to do it optimally. Just like there is for Blue Mage. At best you'd are adjusting for ranged uptime or single vs. multi-target, which is exactly what the new Summoner got away from and is the one thing it did right.

Also screeching about how summoner needs to just summon because that's how it works in FF is.. uh, have you actually played any other FF games? The only one of the top of my head where you could do that viably without some game breaking trickery or end-game nonsense didn't even have actual summoners. Summons are typically super moves that take way too much MP for constant spamming, which exactly why Summoners are usually multiclassing as White or Black Mages. I mean it's okay FF14 is doing its own thing with the job, but at least get your gatekeeping right.

the only classes that are an emption to the optimally 1 way is, rng classes. and blackmage. they have like 3 diffrent rotations. old smn had a optimal rotation but you could extend parts of it to fit specific mechanics and not take a heavy loss unlike current smn that there is only 1 super ridged way to play and the only way to get more damage is rng.

the current smn is trying to focus on a different audience and the devs forgot about the fans of old smn along with the roots of ff14 smn while trying to pander to a different audience. Both sides are correct in this but the fault is on the devs. its easer to make a new class to pander then to rework and change an audience. they picked the change of audience which caused the divide. and they are just leaving it to burn. i do feel like all of this would be not as bad with all the bad class ideas that they have if they actual talk about the classes and the direction for them before implementing, and not like 2-3 weeks before its implemented like when its still on the drawing board.

Whatever they do; I just hope they don't take away our mobility by adding a bunch of long cast times.

Or if they do, make them castable while moving.

Asking for a caster to not have cast times... ok.
Then they should make SMN a Physical Ranged at this point. /smh

It would be ridiculous for them to create this job without a plan for it's future so I would hope they already have a plan for at least 7.0.

Add Ramuh, Leviathan, Shiva then make the rotation like this: Bahamut (opener) > Ifrit, Titan, Garuda > Phoenix > Ramuh, Shiva, Leviathan > Bahamut > repeat.

No more buttons, just different colors of the same thing. Literally, a 'summon machinegun'... something SMN never was in any FF that I can think of.

At least the job had more substance before than now.

Nope, I'm setting a priority.

If it has to be this way no matter what, which I still don't think follow the "SMN fidelity" people like bring up sometimes, at least make the gameplay part good and rewarding, not this brainless thing that has no sense of improvement.

I feel like since they shed the old parts of SMN (dots, OG pet ai), that they have a better future for the job.

The old SMN would have kept getting even longer openers while creating more convoluted ways of adding summons while maintaining dots and problematic ai.

It's unfinished rn but I feel like they have a better foundation going forward.

To your second line - really their solution was to mostly just not add summons. Getting phoenix at all was the big exception, but before and after? Nope, no more summons for you - they even went out of the way in the lore to explain that summoners just wouldn't have the capacity for any more.

I otherwise agree though. Much better foundation now.

More gem summons would not even remotely come close to fixing Summoner. Ghosting exists, Demi AI still sucks, Pet actions (the whole 1 left) feel like crap because Carbuncle is dead half the rotation. Gem summons solve none of these. Even if these new gem summons were all way more in-depth (like Titan on crack) it wouldn't fix an entire 80 seconds of your 120 second cycle being shallow and vapid.

And lets be real, it'd just be more boring Gemshine spam so that's a moot point anyways.

Ghosting exists, Demi AI still sucks, Pet actions (the whole 1 left) feel like crap because Carbuncle is dead half the rotation. Gem summons solve none of these. Even if these new gem summons were all way more in-depth (like Titan on crack) it wouldn't fix an entire 80 seconds of your 120 second cycle being shallow and vapid.

And lets be real, it'd just be more boring Gemshine spam so that's a moot point anyways.

not to mention the whole shit show that is the leveling experience. end game does not start at cap level. end game starts at level 50. current smn feels best at 50. after that it goes down hill. at level 50 you are still not expecting much but you actually feel like a caster
