Hi everyone, I wanted to bring some awareness and light into a harassment issue that has been going on for months within the JP community between twitter and 5ch (bashing, impersonation, fabricated evidence...), and one that ended on a sad note today for this japanese player which got harassed for months, finally got banned from the game completely. He does not have the means to type this kind of message as he doesn't know english very well, so I'm doing it on his behalf with the help of one of his friends that can sort of communicate in english with me to explain the details.

Tl;dr: Some of you might know about the Koike Incident that happened in Japan, related to ACT and player harassment; this case is sort of similar to that one, but it didn't end on the same note as the person getting targeted was just a normal player called Dingo. He got harassed and pushed away from the JP community by a bunch of anonymous bullies, moved servers and changed names a massive amount of times in hopes of being left alone, until he got permabanned. He wanted to share what happened to him to the world so people have more awareness about it. LONG POST AHEAD WITH THE DETAILS.

Dingo used to be just a normal XIV player using twitter for screenshots and the forums, during September he made a lodestone forum post about the current state of WAR, and later some people discovered that the text was originally made by someone else on twitter and Dingo copypasted it without giving credit for it. After being accused for it, he apologized publicly on his twitter, but a few hours later he made a post in his alt account that said "sigh, had a rough day today, people are too sensitive", someone following that account found that message disrespectful and brought it up to 5ch, that's how this whole thing started.

In Japan the culture of doxing seems to be pretty set in stone, where they pick a target online and bash the hell out of them until the target commits suicide or leaves the community. People are extremely stressed up in their society and are always looking for a prey in 5ch to use as a punching bag while keeping themselves anonymous, and this time, Dingo was their prey.

After this, people started digging for everything he could have, trying to find a reason to get him banned, and his usage of cosmetic mods became one of these materials. Besides mods, he also had multiple tweets talking crap about people he had met during duties, like DF vents (which everyone of us has done at some point), not doxing. All of these were posted to 5ch, hundreds of people reported him based on all these posts.

To this, Dingo deleted his twitter ID and made a new one, and that's when the main harasser of this case comes from, a guy known in their community as "Chikubert", this person took that twitter ID and started posting EVERY SINGLE screenshot that Dingo had uploaded, criticizing about how the usage of mods can cause XIV to "shutdown" and all other sorts of nonsense.

After all these reports and bashing on 5ch, he was suspended for 10 days, and the bullying came to a close temporarily.

From September to November the 5ch threads were as good as dead, 3-5 posts a day and all these people started moving on. But not Chikubert, he relentlessly kept making tweets against Dingo every single day, even when they got zero interactions or replies. This guy was desperately attempting to make his life feel better by getting acknowledged as a "hero" in 5ch, as that's how they call people that provide material there for people to bash on. Though he wasn't getting much attention as people were already done with Dingo, but he didn't want to stop there.

When Dingo made a post with his TEA Axe after clearing TEA with his static, this person and his crew started exposing every single member of his static and started screaming things like "These guys are accepting Dingo in their static!! These guys are trying to ruin FFXIV!! Gotta burn them all!!" on both 5ch and twitter. After this the 5ch thread started to become more active again and people came back to bash on him because there was no better target at the time. Haters started throwing accusations such as "Dingo bought his clear and didn't actually do it", "Dingo used hacks to clear", "Dingo is a dogshit player" and so on.

And so Chikubert had an idea to catch people's attention yet again. He posted a cropped screenshot from a "contributor" which had proof that Dingo was using a famous botting tool for XIV, to show everyone that he was using hacks to play his WAR. 5ch obviously blew up over this and hundreds of people started accusing him of using hacks, but this evidence looked fishy, and people started noticing things in the screenshot (not showing hotbars and just a cropped screenshot, the existence of a certain tool that lets you change your appearance locally and even your titles and gear, as well as finding no record of Dingo allegedly posting to the bot's forum). People pointed this out, and he was asked to show the DMs to proof that he didn't prepare this himself, to which he just "roleplayed" with another account about receiving a DM and having a conversation, but people in 5ch ate that one up. This botting screenshot was completely fabricated to fuel their hatred.

All of these statements were immediately labeled as "Dingo" by JP people and they started exposing his FC, Linkshells, friends and static members, basically every single person who was related to Dingo and exposed him to them as a hacker, a mod user, and someone trying to destroy FFXIV.

Since that moment Dingo was watched by these stalkers on a daily basis, whenever he joined a static, FC or LS, members would get harassed until Dingo leaves or gets kicked, and whatever posts he would make on twitter or discord would get monitored and posted on 5ch as well. All of this while believing they were doing it in behalf of Yoshida, like saviours of XIV.

This was everything up until 3 days ago when I found out about all of this (I used to follow his original account and lost track of him until now), and decided to give him a hand since with these issues, japanese people are afraid of helping publicly in fear of becoming the next target. In those three days I had the chance of seeing many japanese people look away from this, as well as multiple of them voicing their reasonings to me, here's a few examples of what they said:

"He is a sinner and is trying to end XIV"

"Mods are against the terms of service and he deserves to be punished"

"Yoshida will remove Gpose if modded screenshots are allowed to continue"

Are mods against the ToS? Yes. And so are parsers, and triggers, and everything else that people use. And not all japanese players are against mods either, multiple of them even do it in public accounts and they didn't get any of this kind of traction. But the harassers weren't going to stop no matter how much of anything western players could say to them, they didn't see this as harassment, they saw it as rightful punishment, and so they weren't doing anything wrong in their eyes.

And so yesterday, the 16th, after a mass reporting of his in-game character, he got permabanned by the hand of a GM that only had screencaps of old tweets and discord to go by (his current account was locked). As I've been told, this issue was becoming really big in Japan across social media, about mods and Dingo. People suspect that the dev team did notice this, and what they did to end the situation was to ban the harassed person completely. NONE of the abusers were banned or suffered any sort of consequence for this crusade.

Now this didn't end here as they're still resentful against mods and anyone that shows mods in public, so they are somehow trying to go after western XIV players that post those modded screenshots on Twitter/Discord. Personally I don't think they can do anything given the language barrier and cultural barrier, but if you do use mods and upload screenshots online, do not post screenshots that might show your in-game name, or anything that might link you to that character, both in-game/lodestone and social media.

I do not enjoy this kind of behaviour against a single player at all and I'm glad that some japanese players decide to voice their support even if it wasn't on public. The bullies ended up getting what they wanted and nobody actually deserves this, he had no way of stopping the abuse as he wasn't getting attacked directly by any player, and no matter how much he changed names or servers he was not able to play in peace.

The character ID on Lodestone is used heavily for stalking and I'm surprised there's no way to ask for a change in cases like this one, makes all you do to move around and change your name completely worthless and I wish S-E actually had some measures for this kind of targetting.

Edit: As for sources, I've been told I can't link the twitter profiles here, but it's a big enough incident that you can easily find it under "Dingo XIV" through twitter search.

Edit 3: I've talked with Dingo a bit, he's very grateful of all the people around the world supporting him on this, gave him the strenght to not give up as he was feeling very exhausted for all of this. Also that most of the things on his wiki page are fabricated, only the WAR lodestone forum post remains true (aside from using cosmetic mods).

Edit 4 and last: For anyone coming here after the LL where Yoshida talked about mods and curious of how it ended, Dingo tried to ban appeal for his account but was denied, so between starting with a new character and retiring from the game, he decided it was time to quit. Right now he's living peacefully after leaving this phase of his life behind. (And no mentions from Yoshida about harassment over mods btw, their priorities are straight.)

Japanese players hate mods/addons in general, like really really much. The only addon that seems to be widespread tolerated under the JP playerbase are shader tools.

Only reason i can think of why that is is cause they feel like it's disrespectful to the work of the devs and that it devalues the game, which asian players are really crazy about. They are really into status symbols like limited public (not fully instanced, like a own zone for every player) housing and the ultimate weapons and all that.

So i feel like this whole mess has come down now to a kind of cultural clash between JP and the western world which are much more liberal about the use of third party tools. Question is if SE sticks with their JP playerbase even tho it is by now significantly smaller than the NA/EU playerbase or if they cut western players finally some slack.

TL;DR: People are assholes, hide your mod usage, the end.

Except any JP streamer I watched during the race was also running ACT and various UI mods...

It has less to do with the JP community hating mods and more to do with sour grapes over clears. Again.

this is funny. I hate addons a lot, and feel they are cheating. I am in no way Japanese.

its not a culture clash at all.. WoW made it virtually mandatory to run mods because it was about the only way to get any QoL improvements to play the game. period. the western player base is not more "liberal" its that they are used to using them without repercussions. in fact, many western players think theirs is the ONLY way a game should be run. They could care less about any other part of the world. I am sure you have been around forums long enough to realize this.

This is a Japanese game, run by a Japanese company. its theirs, end of story. It will typically be run under a Japanese culture. the clash is basically... westerners, especially in the US, fail to realize this.

Personally, I like their stance on addons. I would love it if they actually did more about the bots and the gil buyers but time will tell. western players dont need "slack", they need a dose of reality and the idea that the world does not revolve around them.

Also at least on tonberry according to streams I have watched literally everyone has the lay down everywhere mod. I know it is tonberry, but these people will be in the game for months and no one seems or seemed to have really cared. Unsure how it is right now, I would imagine everyone using this on an jp server will not be using this until everyone stops being insane. I also swore many used act as well, but thats about it really. At least from people I have seen and spoken to.

If the most console centric gamer nation in the world hates mods and addons the most in the world then that has to be proof console people need to chill out and stop being jealous about not getting the same stuff a machine that costs 5 times more gets.
Like geeesh, its bad enough that the potential of any multiplatform game is held back by console limitations, but that they act like this is... kind of disgusting. Worse still, seeing how many threads lately that try to skew addons as some sort of easy win, despite there being very few addons actually endorsed by the modding community that actually offers anything like thatm tells me this absurd behaviour is leaking out into the wide populace as well.

That's a fallacy, i mean yes it is a japanese game. Japanese devs. Japanese company. But they want to make money on the western market and their shareholders are definitely not all japanese. As i said, by now the western audience is way bigger than the japanese one, which means they either have to adapt or have to bite into the lemon and burn their western market to the ground. It's a mutual relationship between consumer and provider and it has to be beneficial for both sides, if one side decides to disrespect the other too much (yes that means also cheaters cheating with plugins and all that) then the other side needs to adapt, goes both ways.

And yes there are also western players hating mods/plugins/addons and whatnot. And there are probably japanese players being alright with said tools. But you have to take into account that not all players from japanese datacenters are actually japanese but from all over asia and oceania. It is actually illegal, like 5 years jailtime illegal, to modify games/consoles in japan. I think that plays also a huge role in how the japanese playerbase sees modding in general.

Ofc addons etc. that allow players to basically cheat their way through the game should be never allowed, in my opinion. But at this point, purging every community that relies on certain addons, would damage the games image beyond repair which would cause also aftereffects for players who never touched an addon in their life. Raiders, guidemakers, roleplayers, housing maniacs and gposers are a huge gigantic influence on how the game is perceived online due to them flooding social media with basically free advertisement for the game. If SE decides to come down hard on these people i fear at the end it will hurt everyone, since we know who buys the most stuff from the cashshop, if they burn that bridge then other players will also face less content and less development and SE a huge blow to their stock which will cause shareholders to go nuts.

Not all mods/addons are cheats, a damage meter just gives you the data you need to improve your rotation. The overwhelming amount of third party mods and addons are cosmetic or QoL.

There are addons which allow you to cheat tho but at this point it will hit both cheaters and QoL modders and especially streamers.

You’re wasting your time with these types of people. They think themselves virtuous all while not being able to see the forest from the trees.

This is the solely reason why I am hesistant to engage on savage raiding altogether,

I don’t anyone to dictate my DPS meter, tank percentage or healing burst statistics whatever etc., just follow the mechanics accordingly & have fun,

Being a console player made me far appreciate the game as it is & I just can’t be bothered to have more additional assets that would over eclipse my idea of fun & make it a chore due to supremacy’s sake.

I left WoW because of that & while not surprised, it’s disheartening certain individuals still resorts into engaging on such activities that which upset them enough once upon being caught.

Why not just play the game as it is?

It sucks that the GMs would again be allowed to be used in such a way. I don't think people should be banned for using parsers. Unless there is solid evidence of them manipulating the game and servers in any way that's detrimental, I don't think they deserve the ire they get from the community, much less the doxxing and death threats.

I mean, one of the biggest takeaways for me is that some 5ch users are cancerous incel pieces of garbage who will probably die alone and will never amount to anything important other than contributing to the misery of others, zerg mentality and self gratification.

And even though I do not parse, I will never stream my gameplay of XIV ever again. I'll stick to recordings and uploading them on YouTube for funny commentary.

But this ban was apparently ruled in favor of potentially questionable material. So no. It's literally not that simple especially when that kind of mentality is involved.

Hypothetically speaking, if I was streaming while using any mod whatsoever, I would:

-Hide my name at all times

-Hide party list.

There are numerous ways to do this but if someone wants to be braindead and wants to die on the useless hill that is wanting to stream their mod use freely while fully knowing there's a faceless mob ready to hunt them that no one can do anything about, let the Darwinian hands of Square Enix do their work.

The amount of hatred some people can harbor is unbelievable. To this day one of the biggest questions I have is just what has happened in these peoples lives that they derive so much joy from ruining others. Imagine being a person who derives meaning in life, and willfully spends their time and life with the sole objective of destroying another.

I somewhat remember someone using body/gpose mods and were "unilaterally excluded from the game or content/community" by them in JP

It got worse as 5chan started going after people acquainted with them.

Well it sucks if he was innocent (at the time he was permabanned) but I generally don't like putting my full faith into a one-sided story. If it's 100% true then SE deserves a slap on the wrist for making a bad call. Bad calls happen every once in a while.

Same here i agree with you on that. I personally dont inderstand why its so hard for players to just not use them. But unfortunately its partly the world we live in that people dont like being told that they cant do something or that there are rules that even they should fallow.

As someone who plays on both PC and console and has never used mods, I seriously don't care if someone does use mods unless they are being used to provide the player with an unfair advantage. By and large, it seems the amount of modders that do this is extremely low and the majority of mods are done for QoL and fluff purposes.

All in all, I wish that people would chill out with all this stuff, especially SE. I just want things to chill out.

At least 1/4th of the community. At best.

I would agree that doxxing is a pretty shitty thing to do, not to mention illegal, but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere in this person's story which may or may not be telling the whole truth.

You do know that one of the main cheat programs is CB, and that runs through ACT specifically, right? Aren't you contradicting yourself here?

How do you tell people ACT is ok but CB that runs through ACT is not? How do you seperate these things?

I'm dying to know.
