Please, Get Rid of Quick Chat

It isn't pleasant to use, it causes more harm than good, and definitely doesn't prevent toxicity.

Please, just let us have normal chat like every single other time (dungeons, raids, trials, FRONT LINES, literally everything else.) The Quick Chat is good in theory, and can even complement the standard typing system, but it isn't good at all by itself as a base thing.

The Quick Chat is severely limited, has so very limited options to even attempt to communicate an intention, and worst, it doesn't even have good options. Sure saying "Attacking <job>." can give an idea, but what does it mean? Does it mean you're going to chase them into LaLaLand, does it mean focus fire, does it mean, "That's the person that killed me."? Just a few examples, but it lacks the nuance.

The fact that I can't type something as simple as, "Focus NIN then DRG." in chat bothers me greatly, and considering we can already do this in other PvP modes, bothers me further. I really don't know what else to say, except please just give standard typing back, and let Quick Chat just be a complement system, and not stand-alone.

To address a few things I guarantee will come up:
1) But it stops toxicity and tearing people down.
1a) Not really, people are able to spam the 'positive' things just like they do in every game that has this kind of system.

2) Quick Chat spammers are getting punished, so this stops toxicity.
2a) You know what else hands down punishments? The report system on the Help Desk. Super simple to fill out, requires minimal effort on your part, and you too can battle toxicity in typed chat.

3) Everything you need to say is in Quick Chat in some form, just get good.
3a) Read above, things can have many intentions, and honestly with how terrible some of these players are in CC? I'm glad they're having fun, at least I hope they are, but the simple fact that there isn't a clear 'Shot Call' option at all. Barest minimum let us create our own Quick Chats with 'approved' words.

4) What approved words would you even suggest then?
4a) Focus target, Stop chasing, Buffing <target>, Debuffing <target>, and others I'm sure people can think of.

Side tangent, please make seeing who you're targeting not such a pain. You get this tiny indicator of who you're targeting on the character model, and a 'highlight' on their enemy list. Can we please just have a health bar or something far more noticeable?

I mean we have another topic pretty sure on the front page regarding quick chat changes. They need to put more options if they're not going to let us use chat fully.

If you don't think regular chat will be toxic one look at the matches where a guy just keeps spamming the quick chat bubble over and over again tells you more than enough.

I think the quick chat system is better in the long run but needs FAR more options.

I just want an option to mute people who spam the same button repeatedly.

I like the quick chat. If someone doesn't say hello I know that they are either new to PvP, stupid, or a jerk who doesn't care about working with the team. First impressions are everything.

Crystalline Conflict is too fast to type-discuss strategy.

I would like Quickchat to also be available in Frontlines, but with it's standard chat still available, because Frontlines is slow enough and large enough for some strategy disussion.

And I want an option not tied to system sound to disable the quick chat sound notification.

We have plenty of time pre-game to type up a simple strategy, or when you're dead and respawning. There are times that are available for it.

1) Toxicity will escalate to unknown levels. I don't want people at base chatting how bad is everyone
2) It will raise so many support tickets will be insane.

If you don't think toxicity will be 10 times worse, u are delusional or never played other teamplay competitive games like MOBAs

There's ample precedent out there for what open PvP chat looks like.
We don't need to guess. It's never constructive. It's always a dumpster fire.

Quick Chat is missing a few options it needs, but it's fundamentally perfectly fine.

If you think that a person pressing a button at the start of the match that writes "Hello." in the chat for them is a measure of their character or competency I don't even know what to tell you.

The only thing I disagree with is missing a "few" options.

I'd say Quick chat is quite useless in its current iteration outside of tagging a single target and chat spam.

If an enemy is coming around the side instead of going through mid? No chat option for that.

If you're getting ganked in the back line? No chat option for that.

If you're going to go help someone? Cover is the only option and it's bad.

If you want to assist someone or coordinate LBs? LB ready isn't enough.

If you want tell someone to help someone else while you hold the point? Nothing.

If you want to tell the team to conserve LB for the oncoming zerg rush? Nothing.

Of you want to warn the team about a field effect? Nothing. (Perfect opportunity for Danger Bongos)

If you want to tell the team to play defense for a bit? Nada.

If you want to explain that there's 4 people on the point and there's no point going in to die? Nothing but listening to "push the crystal" sfx spam (something like "there's too many" or something would go a long way here).

I get that the matches go by quick and you won't be able to perfect strategize but the sheer lack of tools to coordinate make it where I can understand why people want full chat even if I disagree. You can't time your LBs with someone outside of a generic LB ready, you can't coordinate pincer attacks, you can't even tell them why you're leaving the crystal to help the people who are getting rocked behind you by the nin/mnk/etc. It's really difficult to coordinate when everyone in the room thinks they're the leader and that the rest of the team is "abandoning them" or "not doing their job" when there's a reason you leave or retreat 9 times out of 10. I know part of that is on the other people but the lack of options is bad too.

You really shouldn't just guess things about people. I've played games like League of Legends since their beginning, Smite, Heroes of the Storm, Overwatch, and have always ranked in their upper tiers. When League first created their Challenger tier, I was in it for 3 straight years, then I ended up just leaving the game for other ones since I really wasn't having fun anymore. Smite I never got too into, and stopped at Diamond. Heroes of the Storm, my friends stopped playing, so I did too, Gold admittedly but we only played for 2 weeks. Overwatch I poured way too much time into, kept nothing less than Diamond.

Yes, I know what free chat is capable of, and guess what, we're already capable of such things in the game itself, for every other game mode, for every other function of this game. Absolutely nothing stops you from sending a message to that person after the match to harass them either. Also, people aren't going to get as toxic as you might suspect here, because Square actually cares about player experience. Just report it and it'll get taken care of. People are vastly more likely to complain about a person in private with their friends; whether in voice chat, a discord server's text channel, or even sometimes in their FC or linkshell chats. What I'm getting at is, the majority of complaints happen where the 'victim' can't see it, because they know they'll catch punishment if they vent too hard.

It's a ranked pvp game, I want agency over my team members to be able to tell them things like "Don't split". I don't care if people get mouthy, I'm a big boy.

The problem with open chat isn't that your feelings might get hurt by naughty words. The problem with open chat is that it's a distraction.
Once you have one or two teammates concentrating on typing what they think of each other instead of playing the game, the match is over.
At least in LoL, you can carry through someone sitting in spawn talking shit. In CC, that's very unlikely.
Every clutch comeback you've ever pulled in CC after your opponents won the first engagement and steamrolled through the checkpoint would've been a loss with open chat.

No, it's also possible they're just tired of "Hello!" "Hello! "Hello! "Hello! "Hello!" and then their entire team just feeds the enemy because they don't understand what it means to actually try to win.

How about letting us make quickchat commands using auto translated words?

That was an idea I've had as well, but I don't know how I feel about it either. It would definitely widen the vocabulary to be useful, but we'll also just get weird macro messages of misplacing keyboards and other weird troll messages. I'm not against it personally, but judging by comments here so far, even the slightest 'annoying' or 'mean' thing is toxic and should be removed.

We'd also run the risk of people using it to erp in matches lmao, the only thing I want to attack in CC is the enemy, not Miqo'te rear. Still, it's a risk I'd be willing to take.

One has nothing to do with the other, since it never hurts to be nice. (Unless one has severe emotional issues.) Right now there are too many cheaters, premade groups, and also folks throwing matches on purpose. That's on the game maker, not players.

Huh? Cheaters are pretty rare, premade groups are literally impossible, and it's been a while since I've seen people *intentionally* throwing. Sometimes I'll see people pitch a temper tantrum after they get dumpstered after trying to dive the enemy team 1v5, but that tends to be a quick trip to Mordian Gaol for folks like that so... meh.

I do agree that we could use more quickchat options. Protect <target>! would be incredibly helpful for trying to ask people to peel DPS off of a specific person.

Premades in the purest sense (i.e. 5 group vs 5 randos) is "close to" impossible yes. However grouping up in general is not.

In an easy to replicate example if I queued up with 4 other friends, sure on occasion our matches wouldn't link up but 9 times out of 10 we did. All it takes is one person being on the other team and 4 bein on the other to steer the match one way or the other, even worse if the team agrees to play weaker if they end up on opposing teams.

Doing full premade may be implausible but it is entirely possible for a group of 5 to steer the direction of fights unless something has dramatically changed this week in queuing methods.

My take: Can we get both free chat and quick chat? I realize last time we had competitive mode free chat it lasted form 3.21 to 3.5 (They felt the need to put in chat restrictions after ~10 months). I also realize it probably doesn't make sense financially to expand the amount of staff reviewing reports on the part of SE. I guess we can dream though.

Both chats would provide:

- A set of standardized commands that people are already familiar with/ can familiarize themselves with off the hop. My mind also goes to those players who use a controller primarily. Switching between controller to keyboard sounds (is) cumbersome at the pace of a CC match.

- The ability to provide more in-depth communication within a team.

Keep Quick chat for CC but add more and better 'chat macro'.
