I Love 6.11 White Mage--But Should Afflatus Misery be Given Earlier?

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say that compared to its past iterations, I really enjoy the lilies being dps neutral now. Whereas before I only used them during downtime (or for emergencies), now I use them all the time.

It nice to actually think about the lily gauge ... actively using lilies to avoid overcapping, and counting how many miseries I can get in an encounter.

However, I still believe white mage could use some work in these areas:

1) I'd like to see Holy have a weave window. It feels bad having to clip holy in order to heal tanks.

2) I'd also like to see lilybell have its time duration at least extended by a couple seconds. (I have to really time it in order to get the most out of it).

3) And, probably the biggest one, I'd like to see afflatus misery moved down the moment you get your lilies in Heavensward. Why? Without having to think about afflatus misery, pre-level 80, I'm back to pre-6.11 white mage where I avoid using lilies, and it feels bad. I know some people don't care about older content, but as someone who largely does daily roulettes, that older content tends to be the majority of my experience playing FFXIV.

If Misery's potency gets brought down pre-76, then I see no issue with that.

Personally, I'd just like to see some skill and spell pruning but that's probably more along the lines of 7.0 anyway.

WHM just needs an overhaul from the ground up. Too many key skills are locked at the end of the leveling spectrum, especially since the majority of them are just replacements for old removed skills, or are just copies of existing skills.

I’m of the opinion that Holy should be a 1.5s cast time just like Gravity. I think the developer’s defense of it still being 2.5s is “Holy stuns mobs tho”—yet they don’t consider you only get 7 to 9 seconds of that benefit before stun immunity kicks in. And while the stun is valuable, it’s not reason enough to not make Holy have a 1.5s cast time.

Personally, I think Lilybell could be brought down to 2 minutes. As it is now, it’s basically Earthly Star that doesn’t also deal damage but is on a three time as longer cooldown. I don’t think the heal potency is really defense enough to leave it at 3 minutes.

Even if you don’t have Misery, I wouldn’t just not use your lilies if you need them. If it came down to Cure II versus Solace, I would pick Solace each time due to the instant cast and the fact that it doesn’t consume mana. I know they’ve made improvements to WHM’s mana economy, but some of the heals, in my opinion, are still way too costly. Cure II being one of them. I don’t know why it’s still 1,000 MP compared to AST’s Benefic II being 700 MP for the same potency. Casting Solace with no Misery refund would still be as much as a loss as casting Cure II, so I just opt for the free one before I start with the mana drain one.

For the lilies themselves, I believe Rapture should be learned much lower than 76. Somewhere in 50-60, you should have access to both Solace and Rapture. It’s also nonsensical that you learn Misery at 74, but don’t learn Rapture until 76. I’ve never understood that. Misery could be a decent level 60 or level 70 capstone ability, with Rapture and Solace coming before it to give WHMs an introduction to the system. Misery would be a capstone reward for utilizing said lilies properly.

I also think skills like Tetra and Assize should have charges. 2 Tetra charges would make it a bit more in line with Essential Dignity, even if not as strong. And I don’t see how that would hurt. Assize having two charges would allow you to actually sit on one charge to use for free healing and mana Regen without taking a huge damage loss. So long as you don’t over-cap the charges. You’d still likely blow both in the opener, re-openers, and bursts—but it would make the skill have the healing potential versus “I press this on cooldown for damage, not for healing”.

Adjusting its potency for lower levels would be ideal.

How would you rework it? Aside from the changes I mentioned, I currently love the current playstyle of white mage.

They could just adjust the stun for a 1.5 second cast time. I also agree lilybell should be on a shorter cooldown.

As for the tetra and assize charges, I'd rather that they rework them in a way that's unique to white mage. For example, I like that assize has damage on it, compared to celestial intersection (if that's what you call it). As for tetra, I'd just add a regen/mitigation on it, and make it feel like equilibrium.

But let's say they did decide to go with charges, I'd probably overheal more than I do right now. Even with the worst teams, I currently find myself overhealing with a lily followed by an assize.

In my opinion the best thing you could do is make Lilies deal damage AND heal every time they are used. That way they’re neutral in all situations as opposed to randomly being dps positive to blow through if you have downtime. Then you can have Misery be tuned as an independent burst cooldown to offset WHM’s lack of a raid buff. This also solves the issue of not having Misery until way later in your levelling progression by giving you the thing you want from it immediately.

I’m not proposing that Assize lose its damage, and adding a charge to it would not impact the way it functions as a skill. It would still behave the way it does now. The issue with it now is that it is used ONLY for damage—never as a heal. Holding it for healing is suboptimal. Adding charges to the ability would return the flexibility that it had in HW and early SB prior to when they buffed the damage aspect of it and lowered the CD to 45 seconds, and you could actually use it for healing if it is needed. I’m more so thinking about reducing the rigidness of it now. (Even though it is more or less moot since healers are so overpowered and the overall healing required in content is pretty low.)

I don’t know why you’re talking about Celestial Intersection, so I’m a little confused there—that is more of a Divine Benison equivalent, since it provides a small shield + heal top off. It isn’t an Assize equivalent. Assize isn’t really equal to anything when you compare it to AST’s toolkit except maybe Star, since both have damage and healing attached, and are primarily used on CD for damage.

Tetra would feel better to have stacks and function the same as it is now, personally. It would be a priority single-target heal and would allow you to save your Lilies for Raptures versus using them for Solace; Rapture is simply better compared to it. It’s doubtful that they would give it a mitigative aspect since WHM has never been a mitigative healer. Temperance and Divine Benison are about the extent of its mitigation abilities compared to the other healers. And Benison is basically an oGCD Stoneskin, which we had back in ARR and HW.

The issue with overhealing more so has to do with the fact that content in this game is not designed to have high incoming damage that requires healing, and healing potencies on all four healers are incredibly high compared to the damage that needs healing. And the “more casual” content you do, the worse you notice that healing requirements are super low. Both AST and WHM have high overheal since they have damage abilities with healing attached that are not worth it to delay (Earthly Star, Assize).

There is some wiggle room to adjust your Lilies around Assize if possible. Stuff like that takes practice though, and fight knoweldge; but it can be done.

I see. So you want assize to have two charges, so it can have the flexibility it once had? I've only been playing since Shb, so I'm working from there. But still, I feel like charges is something you just use on cooldown. I'd rather they do something more interesting with the existing skills than just add charges.

As for overhealing, I really don't need two charges of tetra. I've been fine even with some of the awful teams I gotten. Even in the savage fights I've seen my brother play (as I don't do harder content), they don't seem to have any need for more healing. This is another reason why I'd prefer making existing skills more interesting than add charges to them.

But wouldn't you just end up in a situation where you're just using lilies on cooldown for damage? I feel I'd be out of lilies when I actually need them.

Not necessarily. You would use them to the point where you do not cap on charges. Take SGE’s Phelgma for instance: you blow both charges in the opener under buffs, and from there, you can hold on to a charge if you need it for movement versus losing a cast at all. Likewise with Assize charges, you could actually save one for healing if necessary versus using on cooldown for damage with no flexibility to the skill.

It is true that healing requirements are low. But healer playstyle is usually oGCDs > GCDs, so the two charges sort of fits more into that playstyle. The change to the Lilies being DPS neutral has alleviated the issue of damage loss caused by GCD heals. But before then, it would be much worse to have to use Solace versus having a second Tetra charge. I could think of instances where it would be beneficial. And if they aren’t used, then they aren’t used. It doesn’t hurt to add it.

They had no business removing Largesse only to give it back 40 levels later as a "brand new ability" when it could've just upgrade to it. The same idea can be done with several spells/abilities so WHM isn't so painfully bareboned below 60. Heck, Solace is basically just "gcd Tetra" all the way to 74

What WHM needs:

- Afflatus Solace and Afflatus Misery should be learned at level 30. Afflatus Misery's damage needs to scale with Stone/Glare and receive a potency increase with each Stone Mastery/Glare Mastery trait.
- WHM's GCD healing library needs to be reworked. Expand on the lily system and prune mediocre heals. Cure II and Medica can stay as the only non-lily GCD heals but should award a lily when used. This makes it so that when WHM has no lilies, Cure II and Medica actually help healers catch up when behind rather than just being shitty buttons. You should not need them under normal circumstances.
- A spell that does not cost a lily but nourishes the blood lily one time on the GCD with a 3 second cast time. This makes it a DPS loss, but allows you to nourish the blood lily during downtime without burning lilies and over-healing unnecessarily.
- Precursor abilities at lower levels, such as Protect which later upgrades into Aquaveil and Divine Seal which later upgrades into Temperance. This helps give WHM more things to do at lower levels while also helping new or learning healers get comfortable with weaving more.
- Give WHM a simple, yet meaningful DPS kit. A tool I would love to see would be Water/Banish, a GCD spell with a 15 second cooldown and 3 charges. It deals the same damage as Stone/Glare but is instant cast, deals 50% damage to all remaining enemies, and makes your next spell cost 50% less MP. This could replace Thin Air and act as a mobility tool for weaving, also allowing Stone/Glare and Holy to be longer cast spells. It would change up how WHM approaches DPS a little more and foils against BLM's design thematically.
- Give Assize a second charge. This means WHM isn't compelled to use it exactly on cooldown and can reserve it as a healing resource.

These changes would do a lot to smoothen out WHM's gameplay, help it feel more exciting at earlier levels, be more fun to play overall, and be a better introduction into healing for new players.

With the introduction of Afflatus Misery at lower levels, it's also possible to rework Plenary Indulgence and Temperance to reward GCD healing playstyle and turn Regen, Cure II and Medica to useful buttons.

Plenary Indulgence (20 second buff) - 30 second cooldown. Level 70 - 2 charges.
1. Apply 1 stack of Thin Air to self.
2. Apply 1 stack of Confession to self: The next Medica is doubled in potency, Cure II has 200 increased potency, Cure III is instant cast.
3. When Confession is consumed, Nourish the blood lily.

Divine Seal (20 second buff) - Level 40
1. Increases healing magic potency by 20%.
2. Apply 1 stack of Restraint to self: The next Regen adds 50% of its heal over time amount to its initial heal, cost no MP, but will no longer heal over time.
3. When Restraint is consumed, Nourish the blood lily.
4. When Restraint expires instead, generate 1 healing lily.

Temperance (20 second buff) - Level 80
1. Increases healing magic potency by 20%, while reducing damage taken by self and all party members within a radius of 30 yalms by 10%.
2. Apply 1 stack of Restraint to self: The next Medica II or Regen adds 50% of its heal over time amount to its initial heal, will have no cast time, cost no MP, but will no longer heal over time.
3. When Restraint is consumed, Nourish the blood lily.
4. When Restraint expires instead, generate 1 healing lily.

These are bad ideas because you are giving WHM way too much power during downtime. RPR needs 5 seconds of downtime to gain 600 potency with Soulsow-Harvest Moon and WHM would only need one additional second to gain more than double the potency. Downtime Afflatus Misery is already very powerful as is, no need to make the generation of a massive 1240p nuke as well as a potential generation of a minimum of 1200p AoE healing easier than it already is. It would be a nightmare to balance.

You don't double down on a issue just because the issue already exists. A WHM rework should aim at creating a healthy, interesting and engaging connection between lilies and Afflatus Misery, which is currently lacking. It is absolutely not true that there's no way around toxic downtime behaviour.

Decouple Afflatus Misery (and make it a 60s cooldown) from lilies and make lilies oGCDs. Done. It is boring, but so is your suggestion. Lilies need to be reworked from the ground up, these are only band-aid solutions and as such undesirable.

The one good thing WHM has going for it identity wise is it's the only low APM healer and your suggestion defecates on that. WHM does not need to be a weave machine in order to be good. Lilies being GCD that reward you with DPS return is one of the last remaining interesting things about healers. Ruining it is not a problem solver

A pet peeve that I’ve developed ever since the DPS neutral misery and 20s lily timer was added is how abundant the random WHMs who are still not relying on their lilies.

Cure I, Cure II, Medica, Medica II spammer in lv80/90 duties. Holy moly, what are they doing with their now-overabundant lilies?

Squeenix can lower the lily timer to 5s per 1 lily and I’ll still see these spammers ignoring their lilies any days. They are no use unless the WHM are actually using them.

Personally, the 2.5s recast after using a Lily with how few oGCDs WHM has to weave feels particularly awful IMO. I mean, I already blew thru all my oGCDs already prior to using my Lilies so apart from maybe a Divine Benison here and there, I really don't have much to weave and it just feels like I'm twiddling my fingers waiting to do something else.

I never liked how lilies smell, they may be pretty flowers but they are indeed stinky

Jokes aside, I don't think there's anything to be done there. WHM is intentionally designed so that even a literal toddler, or the laziest of lazy people can use it, so while it's inneficient af, if only Cures and Medicas will suffice to get the job done, that's all they'll press.

That's kinda how I feel playing RDM, there's always that awkward pause inbetween dualcasts

1. Holy is obtained at level 15 with no stun.
2. Lily gauge unlocked by Haukke Manor.
3. Misery is unlocked by or at level 50 (preferably much of the sooner than 50).
4. Holy upgrades into Holy II at level 45 and gains the stun.
5. Cast time of Holy should be one half gcd.

Now back port this to all healers. We should all have aoe by Sastasha.. fricken all jobs should have this.

No job should be waiting until post fifty to unlock the job gauge this should be at Haukke as minimum because this is first dungeon you can switch from class to job within.

All healers should have one ogcd option minimum by Haukke to assist in training new players to use ogcd > gcd healing tools. Unlocking one lengthy ogcd that screams emergency button to new players is awful terrible bad design and I do not like it. Could do this with Cure 3 perhaps? Template exists in PvP already.

Ooooofff course you see more of the heal bot White Mages in the later levels. They had to wait until 50 for one ogcd heal! Astro has ED in first dungeon and Scholar gets three Lustrates in Dismal Darkhold..

Stop attempting the designating of one class for babies it is not working. White Mage is worse at doing its job then any other healer while being the least newbie friendly. All it does is teach really really bad habits. Stop it Square. Get some help.

Not so much a complaint about Misery so much so about Tetragammaton. Tetragammaton needs to have a weak level 30 version. Kind of insane for WHM to not have a single target oGCD until level 60. When SCH and Sage get theirs at level 45 and AST get's theirs at level freaking 15.

Probably due to the fact WHM gets the lily system so late in its leveling life that no casual WHM player has even come close to developing the muscle memory to use them or even know they exist. Using and relying on Cure and Cure 2 for 52 long ass levels before you get Solace and relying on and using Medica and Medica 2 for 76!!! even longer ass levels makes it hard, and sometimes impossible for some, to learn to use Solace and Rapture when they get it in their minds that; "I've been doing fine so far" or "I didn't even know these things existed".

Lily system needs to be brought down to pre-level 50 and both Solace and Rapture, and/or their low level counterparts, need to be learned at the same time and not 24 levels apart, good god.

And to put it into perspective on just how long that stretch of 24 levels is: a new player learns Solace a bit into Heavensward but doesn't learn Rapture until they're almost done with Shadowbringers.

Oh yes, that cooldown. I completely forgot about it. If its cooldown were reduced, which still wouldn't help WHM, it would need an actual healing potency number. Maybe a 90 second cooldown with something like 1200 or 1800 potency and if used on a target with less than 25% HP it puts a 500 potency HoT on them that ticks 3 or 4 times. Not completely broken but still achieves Benediction's original purpose but could be used twice as often.

I always thought the Cooldown should be around 120 seconds considering how starved they are for oGCDs but recently I started wondering if Benediction should have stacks too. I don't mean charges for multiple uses but rather stacks that allow Benediction to grow in power over time. Let's say you start an instance with 10 stacks on your Benediction and it heals for 100% HP the first time you use it like normal. It goes on Cooldown but every 18 seconds from there forward it gains a stack worth 10% of the targets health. So after 180 seconds it is back at 10 stacks and heals for 100% health but after 90 seconds it has 5 stacks and heals for 50% health. This way Benediction remains powerful and can be used as it always has but is more flexible and able to assist with smaller healing requirements too.

Adjusting Benediction to heal at 40%-50% of max HP at 90s cooldown would probably make it a more useful tool than the outdated crap we have right now.

That's why I say delete them. To elaborate on a post I made earlier about Cure II and Medica on specifically how I'd handle them is make them the only GCD heals that aren't Lily-dependent and then have them upgrade into Solace and Rapture while you have lilies. Then when you have no lilies, both Cure II and Medica grant a Lily if you're forced to use them after having run dry on lilies. It's shoehorning people into using their lilies, but maybe the beginner healer should be railroading new healers down the correct path, and then just expand on alternative options for lily heals.

On idea I had was cutting Medica II as a separate spell and make Regen an OGCD that makes your next healing spell apply a regen: 250 potency for single target healing and 150 potency for AoE healing. It would have a cooldown so you can't just always use it, but would allow you to more fluidly apply Regens with other healing resources.

You're my spirit animal. I'm usually chill and too focused on not screwing up myself... but if I ever hear a single Medica 2/Cure 2 (and Hydaelyn forbid Cure 1) sound effect at content above level 60 I just... give the WHM healing a strong side-eye. It awakens something in me...

I keep a buff-cancel macro specifically for things like Medica II, Regen, EProg or Succors in dungeons. Sure it's a little petty but it keeps things a little more fun seeing how fast I can react to and drop unnecessary HoT's.

I've gone through dungeons where I've literally clicked off 20-30 Medica II's instantly and never dropped below 50% health.

They REALLY badly need to redesign healer leveling curves.(And honestly most class leveling curves) so that tools are given earlier.

IMO by level 50 all classes should have the basic feel that they have at 90, just with some of the extras pared off.

Sometimes I run out of oGCDs and Lilies :(

They could honestly give early WHM Misery in the form of Fluid Aura doing damage.

I think having Misery earlier would promote better learning for newcomers.

Personally, I'd want Assize to have two charges and be on the GCD to promote keeping one on CD and the other as a backup pass opener and burst windows. Being on the GCD would help with weaving (Although they don't really need it anymore).

This used to be one of my wishlist before they add the 1.5s cast time minus the 2nd charge. The idea is to have Assize deals purely damage and restore MP while granting their allies confession stack that can be procc'ed with any source of healing, which improves the probability of not wasting the cure potencies. Each use of Assize will unlock access to a hypothetical instant GCD "Tornado" for an AoE+DoT zerging option with damage fall off for balancing purpose. This provides them with more movement options as well an option to hold some Tornado casts to ensure it can be fit into raidbuff windows. Additionally with confession added to Assize, lv70 Plenary can be replaced with something else more inspiring to use.

Of course it is but a fat wishes at this point... lol

And we don't get Rapture until 76, sometimes Assize alone doesn't cover it :C

What does lowkey annoy me is when I see a WHM/AST (90% of the time a WHM tho, just saying) casting multiple Medica II/Aspected Helios to top everyone off ....do you people even know what a regen is?!

Typically with a good tank I'm using Assize, Lilies, Benediction, Tetra, and Divine Benison. But by god when I have to use Cure 2 and Medica 2, I have to *spam it*/keep medica 2's regen ticking. And then I sit there wondering "wh... where did all of my resources go??? This can't be it????"
