Request: allow all relic weapons at all stages to be dyeable

Hiya,

I was working on my Shadowbringers relics just now and realized that the step I was interested in (Law's Order) does not dye, while the previous ones (Augmented, which looks the same as the previous one, and Recollection) and the next ones (Augmented Law's Order, Blade's and even the Matte Replica) do.
I remember being just as confused when I wanted to dye some of my Stormblood relics, where some steps would not be dyeable while their augmented version would be...
After looking around I can confirm it's the same issue with Heavensward, although it's one of the steps with a glow that is not dyeable this time around (...?)

(As far as I can tell the only exception would be ARR relics, since the first 7 steps share the same model, but none of them are dyeable.)

I find it particularly frustrating in the case of Shadowbringers and Stormblood relics, since on the augmented version you can see underneath the glow what the undyeable version would look like once dyed, but the glow hides it, overwhelms it, or does not match the color desired.

Considering that some weapon steps share the same model and texture data, it shouldn't cost anything production wise to allow us to dye all relics regardless of which stage they're at, right? Is there an official statement on why this decision was made? Or is there a possibility that this could be adjusted in the future? At least on replicas, since they exist solely for glamour purposes...

Bonus question: I've grown somewhat pessimistic regarding the dev team looking at feedback, questions and requests outside of the Japanese forums. Has anyone had better luck making their requests there directly, and would recommend duplicating this thread there?

I would love to see this. Granted I'm not sure how difficult it would be to change but at least going forward I hope this is something they do.

I more want them to make all stages of the relic able to be stuck into the glamour dresser without having to complete the relic to get a replica >> If I don't have to complete a relic to get the look I want I shouldn't have to do all that grind just to be able to get it out of my armoury chest.

It removes unique attributes, which many relics have in the form of custom stats. You'd break relics that way, which is why they can't be placed in the chest.

If I'm only intending to use earlier relics [such as the ARR ones] for glam, it being broken really doesn't much matter. Now, they could put a warning that it's going to break and you won't be able to continue the relic line if you reduce it to the glamour chest and that would fix that problem, but there are a few [the Gae Bolg in particular for me] that I have no intention of ever completing because the first step is all I need for the glam in question.

When it comes to adding relics to the glamour dresser or getting replicas for them right away there's already another thread for it that you can read and participate in.

Bumping, and added diagrams in my original post so people can see which relics are concerned by this request.

I'm also wondering if this is worth reporting as a bug, to get more visibility? Technically it's inconsistent in between expansions so... it could be an oversight.

I think the scenarios where the base version is unable to be dyed but the augmented version (with the same model) is are probably not bugs. There is plenty of gear in the game that has to be augmented or replaced by a higher-grade counterpart for you to dye it, so that doesn’t surprise me.

The job artifact gear recently has an Antiquated or Weathered or whatever form. At 70, the gear needs to be augmented in Eureka to make it able to be dyed; at 80, you need to replace it with the Idealized gear from Memoria Misera EX. Tomestone gear needs to be augmented to be dyed. The normal-mode raid gear for a tier (like Edenmete gear) cannot be dyed, while the savage raid gear (like Edenmorn) can.

So, as much as it annoys me sometimes, I suspect the scenarios that work out that way are fully intended by the devs.

However, I agree with you 100% that the stages that are able to be dyed for the relics, any successive stages using the same model should remain able to be dyed, at the very least. And that feels like a bug. (And if it isn’t classified as one, it OUGHT to be.)

The thing is, for gear there is no "glow" version to augment to, augmenting gear simply unlocks the exact same model with the same texture and allows you to dye it, with no added effect on top (the only exception being Prototype Alexandrian and Alexandrian gear, as far as I'm aware). So this problem doesn't exist in that situation.

For relics, as shown in the diagrams, in some cases there is no intermediate step between Step 1 (undyeable) and Step 2 (dyeable BUT with glow).
If you look at Stormblood relics, it makes sense that the initial "Antiquated" step can't be dyed, but the next steps (relic, +1, +2) can't either, while the "Anemos" step can, but immediately comes with a glow.
If you compare it to how Heavensward artifact weapons used to work, "Antiquated" weapons couldn't be dyed, but once you augmented them (which is now available from the vendor by default) you were able to dye them (on the other hand, the relic steps using the same model but with a glow can't be dyed...?).

And again, if you compare the intermediate steps of Heavensward and Stormblood relics with the intermediate step of Shadowbringers relics, something is off.
Both Heavensward and Stormblood allow you to dye the intermediate step as soon as the relic changes its model, but for some reason Shadowbringers... doesn't.

So it seems weird to me that this is all "working as intended", when the progression of relics and their switch from undyeable to dyeable (to undyeable, in the case of Shadowbringers) is clearly inconsistent between expansions.

I've been wanting the SHB Artifact weapons to by dyable for awhile....I want to dye my Lion Heart q.q

Honestly ALL gear should be dyable form the start now. I will never understand why job gear needs to have hoops attached for what is effectively a basic feature.

I really want to be able to dye the second-last Anima weapons. The particle effects are entirely different colours, and I prefer the particle effect from the second-last stage. But that means the weapon itself completely clashes with the rest of my look.

More seriously, dyeable gear is a pretty big incentive to do optional content, so it would not benefit the dev team (or the people who want to do that optional content) if we were given dyeable gear from the get go.
Think of Memoria Misera (Extreme): there's no mount, just a Triple Triad card and some outdated gear. If the "weathered" artifact gear we got at the end of MSQ was already dyeable, the ratio of people who would do this content would be even smaller than it already is.
Dyeable gear is also personally my biggest incentive to do Savage raids (I do enjoy raiding, but glamour is a strong motivation).

So from that point of view, it makes sense that to unlock dyeable gear, you need to augment it.

What makes less sense, which is the focus of this thread, is that in the case of relics the ability to dye a weapon is not always following the same progression, or not allowing us to dye an intermediate step which would be the same model as the previous and next steps, but without a glow (or with a glow, in the case of Heavensward).

The way I see it, they've been learning as they go and taking feedback into consideration the next time they roll out relics. So many years have passed and much has changed since the Zodiac Weapons came out.

Unfortunately, they're busy trying to keep things current and squeeze in things like male buns, so certain changes like this may never happen.

That, I'll agree is not great design. If there's only two stages (non-glow and glow), then the non-glow stage should always be able to be dyed. If there's three stages (non-glow, augmented non-glow, glow), then I don't think it's the end of the world if you have to augment to the second stage to dye it.

(Any scenario where the first stage is dyeable and the second visually-indistinguishable one is not, that I think just straight qualifies as a bug. Advancing a relic stage should never lose the ability to dye it if the visual remains otherwise entirely unchanged.)

Updated the first post with the changes announced in the preliminary 6.0 patch notes.

We can dye the "weathered" weapons from Shadowbringers now!
... But there are still a lot of relics that should be dyeable that are not, so this thread is still relevant for the time being.

Since new relics have just been released for Endwalker, I updated the first post with a new diagram for Endwalker which includes artifact weapons and the new relic weapons.
For now both are dyeable, which is great, let's hope it stays that way as we progress on our relics...

And still no news about older relics, unfortunately. It really is just a question of allowing players to dye them since the data should already exist for the ones I highlighted, I hope this thread will get some attention from the dev team eventually : pensive :

well they're off to a good start with the new relics at least, the inital stages are dyeable.

Updated my first post with the new Amazing Manderville relic step.

As I'm sure it's been pointed out here and on other platforms it is kind of surprising and strange that they decided to make this step change the color AND add a glow to the relic... I personally was looking forward to see the previous step with a glow because I was quite happy with the colors of the WHM cane but I guess it won't happen, huh. But hey at least both steps are dyeable!

Still no news about the older relics that this thread is about, though.

It worked out for me at least because I prefer the new color scheme for GNB's relic, but I do wonder why they did this. I don't think we've seen a color change like that since ARR and HW.
