My story so far...

Playing through MSQ for the last few weeks for the first time I have the advantage of a continuous story with zero day to day gameplay grind.

At this moment I am the warrior of darkness containing 4/5ths of the worlds light and, I assume, it's slowly killing me.

I am sure it will all work out.

But it makes me think of the next expansion and what, from this involving story, I would want?

Surprisingly, for a story in which I am a central character, I think I need to die. And I have thought this for a while.

I love how true the FF team have been in presenting all sides in the various conflicts. Simple sides of good and evil have been avoided and all is grey...

The best part of the story for me, and my involvement with it, is that its a narrative im forced to follow of the FF team, even if, at so many points, I disagree with my own actions!

I find myself hoping, at this point in time, that endbringers is the end. That I get to die and this war of escalation comes to some beauteous finale'.
It would not stop me playing the content of the game, of which I have barely had a chance to submerge a toe in yet.
And, more for my own personal enjoyment, all the FF team then get the chance to create the next wonderful story to enthral me.

My memories of playing FF7 on playstation have stayed with me for the last 20? years, and the memories of this story will last equally long.

Have to stop now, I need to see if Albrecht will save my life :)

I have to disagree. For all those that died before me so I can be where we are now, I need to live through it and see the happy ending for them, and remember them.

Edit: I see that you are only 4/5. Come back when you are done with 5.3.

If this is single player rpg, I would love for my WoL to die at the end of endwalker, or at least make it an sort of ambiguous ending.

Obviously we need to reserve judgment until we see the aftermath of endwalker, but at this point of the story, I feel like the promise to remember things is, well, hollow. The same to all people who died before us. Except for haurchefant (who the devs love to keep pushing to our face). And well, having only the WoL to remember them is kinda useless imo, unless the WoL is a writer who's going to make a memoire/book about his journey.

I don't think it's possible for our character to actually die when the overall game needs to continue.

There's a fairly high chance of some kind of symbolic "death and rebirth" though, and we may not come out of it with our Echo powers intact.

In GW1 you were heavily encouraged to make a new character for each campaign. You could still continue on your old character but they wouldn't recognized as the hero of their prior campaigns.

Yoshida has been hinting at interviews that they're going to go with GW1's campaign format starting with 7.0, where new players can pick which campaign to start with. If so then the WoL dying or disappearing from Eorzea at the end of Endwalker is totally plausible. Ofcourse you're character won't be deleted and you'll be able to take him into the second campaign if you want, but in story he'll be gone. Maybe. FFXIV's writers have been pussying out on actual consequences so I doubt they'll do it.

I think the OP means Alberic the npc you unlock the DRG Job from and thus issues you the DRG Job quests at the Observatorium in Coerthas Central Highlands and is a former comrade of Estinien, although everyone seems to forget about him as Estinien kind of took centre stage in the storyline (it doesn't help he's rather unassuming as a character). Unless he means the parallel-world version of a certain WAR posterboy standin for the player's character in trailers... ;)

Either way, to the OP, it's great to hear you're really enjoying the story, and, it should go without saying but, keep playing! You've still got a fair way to go yet! (And don't worry too much about what happens, as Iscah said given the player's character is the central protagonist SE really can't pull an Aeris here and kill them off abruptly.... although ShB does really push it dangerously close, and that's all I'll say on that subject, other than keep playing, as the best part is still to come for you - wait til you go to

underwater to 'Asciantown' and learn a few truths about the world and yourself.... And while there you'll also find out why Emet has now become the most popular FF villian too. ;)

Well OP, if you like the idea of dying then I guess more power to you? lol

Admittedly I’m old fashioned in that regard, I like good stories with happy endings. I’ve had plenty of hard lessons with not great endings in real life, so I don’t really seek that out in my entertainment at this point.

Would be cool if they gave players an option for different endings, though. Depending on how they want to wrap things up.

You somehow think invalidating up to 10 years of investment for some people in a character (if they're legacy for instance) isn't going to lose SE subs if they do something like this? That's not consequences. That's business suicide.

FFXI story ended with us "The Adventurer" dying at the end of Rhapsodies although we respawned so we can continue to do endgame but from the storyline point of view, we're dead.

I'm going to be honest I'd be pretty p*ssed if that happened to my Legacy Character especially with the start of a new storyline...

I'd be quite happy to see my character, in the role of WoL, "die" at the conclusion of the Hydalyn/Zodiark story arc and become just one of the many adventurers out in the world. This may be hard to do though given the focus on a single-hero narrative model the game's been based on so far. If they could come up with a cohesive and quality story based around current events in the world that we, as an assembly of adventurers, had to deal with I'd love it!

Oddly enough, I cannot find a single interview with Yoshida that even hints of Guild Wars' campaign format. Any search phrase I can come up with that invokes both Yohida and GW1 seems to point at something he talked about at the launch of A Realm Reborn. Back in 2013.

This is what Yoshi has said so far for what is coming next:

I can't find where I saw it, but I'm pretty sure he or someone else also mentioned that this is the last time most of the main characters will have an impactful experience in the story and we'll be saying goodbye to a lot of them (whether dead or otherwise) by the end.

Here’s hoping many of them die off and they give us a new cast of characters to work with. I myself would quite enjoy if they killed off the WoL(us) and maybe had us reincarnate back into a normal adventurer. I don’t have ego issues so i don’t need to go around pretending to be all powerful to make myself feel better. I’d like to just be a normal adventurer exploring new things and whatnot.

That, or even some kind of die and return state of affairs. As I've mentioned before, I like more ability to shape my character and the decisions they make; granted, there's limits to how far you can take this in an MMO (perhaps less so in faction-based ones), so I have to compromise and just hope they run with story themes I like... the jury is still out for that insofar as EW is concerned.

Yes, we'll have to see how they handle it in the end. It's a shame Emet's willingness to seek out alternative routes to the Rejoining plan to realise his wishes wasn't explored more.

Yup - I don't require happy endings, but one is virtually guaranteed for EW... I just hope whatever follows it will entail less plot armour and a bit more freedom in regards to the character, provided it offers enough to keep me playing.

But if I remember right wasn't that revealed to just be a bad translation?

I don't recall any suggestion that future storylines will be "picking which campaign you start with". They've said this is like the end of season 1, suggesting that we're going into a season 2 that might form a recommendable starting point for new players in future, but I can't see this game's storytelling format being compatible with choosing which part to play first. At most they might opt for shorter "seasons" spanning one or two expansions instead of five.

Did Emet ever say he had an alternate plan to a rejoining? Or did he just think he could deal with us more amicably in the meanwhile?

Two things about that. On the one hand, it doesn't really matter to the point I am making, as I am discussing it in terms of my preferred writing direction, hence it'd be a case of writing in such an alternate route in greater detail and running with it. On the other hand, it's fairly clear he had an alternate plan, although quite what that was in full hasn't been elucidated. The planning he put into ensuring the MC gained hold of the Azem crystal (enabling them to survive in 5.3) and the fact that he was genuinely putting them to a test, which he deemed them to have failed, with disappointment, as per this interview translation when failing to hold the light before the snap rejoining of souls (yes, Yoshi is couching it a bit as his interpretation but I think it's consistent with all the story elements we saw, including the poem in Ere our Curtain Falls), they are all strongly suggestive of it.
