Making GIL with Gathering/Synthesis/Items/etc?

Hello,

My friend and I are dirt poor in the game on Famfrit (she's completely new, too). We want to be able to at least get an apartment and enough to dye our chocobos, but 500k in GIL just looks impossible. We've googled for gil making guides, but they just say go pick a profession and do it. We've been at it for a couple days, and have barely scratched 3k in gil.

What are we supposed to be going for? What profession is the best? Or is this not the right way at all to making gil?

Problem with those guides is, everybody follows them.

Sure, gather a bit, sell the excess, and you'll get gil.
If you pick a crafter that can make that into something somebody wants to buy... (and here's the hard part) you make a bit more.
Money does not roll in quickly at the start, unless you find something somebody missed.

I will say though, instead, just do the MSQ a while. There's an easy half million gil between level 1 and 60 in MSQ rewards. Part of why bots do that over and over.

Running roulettes with the "adventurer in need" bonus are worth a few thousand gil each.

Also make sure you're doing your challenge log entries where you can – and particularly trying to hit sets of five for the completion bonuses.

Treasure maps are another thing to look at.

This seems like ok idea. Gathering was always my main method of making money, am not hyper rich but I'll get by.

Selling raw materials is good, selling crafter basic materials is potentially better. Like lumbers, ingots, nuggets, threads, leather - stuff like that people buy from marketboard to craft themselves.

Some fairly simple housing items like Riviera Wall Shelf are always in vogue. Sometimes I personally craft interior walls and floorings, they make money fly in too I've noticed.

This is not my advice, but I once read someone spesificly hinting that crafted ARR primal weapons, the glowy ones, those are surprisingly nice extra money makers.

+ Diadem still, maybe, do not know about OP's server but at Zodiark selling the stuff the monsters does not drop especially is another nifty source of extra.

And yeah, I hadn't watched in a bit. That one is very poor quality and too long. I need to remake a gil making guide and shorten it up. Guess let me say.



Step 1:
Check market prices. Often you can buy things from vendors and resell for a profit just because people are in a hurry or don't feel like teleporting around. Some examples of things I've seen priced higher are Quicksilver, Gysahl Green, etc. There's also fish from the fish vendor at Lima Lominsa. In some cases you can buy for as little as 9 gil each from vendors and resell for 40 up to 1,000 gil each.

Step 2
Start gathering jobs, like Botany. There are many items that you can get at lv25 or below which will sell really well. For example, on my server for the longest time we were selling Noble Grapes for 1k each. You could gather them yourself easily but also if you had your retainer set at Botany, they would bring you 30 Noble Grape an hour. In other words, 30,000 gil per hour. At around lv 25, that's not too shabby. That said, there are many things that sell for 200-500 each on a regular basis and where you can get 99+ of those items an hour. That means 20,000-50,000 gil per hour at a minimum just from you getting out there and picking up some rocks, trees, or fruits/vegetables. (then if you have retainers working on hourly stuff, even more!)

Step 3
Learn to craft. You can level up pretty fast, lots of little tricks to it. You'd be shocked how many things you can spend like 10k on materials and then sell the item you crafted for 50-200k.

Step 4
Level up. I mean, gathering gets easier when you have flying mounts at the end of A Realm Reborn. There's also a lot of tricks such as using tomestones and other currency you get from leveling and doing other content. Like I just used my tomestones I earned today to buy some materials that I could then sell on the Market. I was able to get 2 stacks of 99, with them, selling at 920+ gil each. So you can say like 89k+ per stack, or more than 178k per day just from doing dungeons and other content with people.

Step 5
Access content. Sometimes simple things like Palace of the Dead you can enter around level 20 can be nice experience but also reward you with a little gil. For example, I did a run with FC today and at the end we had 14 sacks on a gacha game. I ended up getting 2 Ugly Duckling minions. On my world, those are selling around 90k each. So that was 180k in the time we ran from floors 1-50 of POTD. So whether you're looking at stuff like that, want to level and enter areas like Eureka or Bozja, etc. There's tons of side content you can do that earns you a nice little side of cash.

The Issue on Advice
By time someone tells you specific items to get or things to do, the competition usually skyrockets and prices drop significantly. I've seen items which used to sell for 2k each now only going for like 200 gil each because people kept bringing market lower. So it's always going to be up to you to monitor what is selling and find ways to gather or craft it. While I did give you some very generic and helpful advice for starters, it really is going to take you looking and comparing things yourself.

Depending what level you are you could also try doing Treasure Maps - they can net you some decent Gil (not uncommon for our FC to run a few of the lvl 80 group ones over a couple of hours and net over a million gil).

Gathering can be very lucrative as you pretty much sell anything you get that's not used in a quest (either MB, or if the MB prices are low just vendor it), plus at higher levels you get Treasure Maps that you can either use, or sell on MB (lvl 80 Group Maps can easily get you 50-100k each depending on your server). Once you hit Ishgard there's also the Firmament/Diadem and mats from there still sell very well.

You won't get a super "this item will sell in like 5 minutes for 100k+ gil" but a lot of smaller items do sell very well and this coupled with questing/roulettes could easily get you your 500K in a matter of days.

Thank you everyone for replying! We're not super far into the game, just got a few quests into Ceorthas, when we decided we needed money and fast. Repairs, food, gyshal greens etc was adding up really fast. I don't think we have Treasure Hunts unlocked yet, and only have the first lvl16 Roulette, but we do have the Palace of the Dead unlocked. We'll try to get a bit further into game too, so we can get the other things unlocked.

(We are on Primal, in Famfrit by the way).

You can pull up a history of the last 20 sales of an item when viewing it at the marketboard. It will include the buyer name, date/time sold along, quantity if it's a stackable item and price per unit. There's no scanning system to get a summary of sales.

Open your gathering, log select an item, copy item name, paste in MB, look at history.

Its long, slow, and cumbersome but it works.

Another tip. Some items are GC turnins. A good wiki will tell you which ones are. Gather and sell those in lots of 10.

The best and most accurate methods will require you to take your time and look through it. That said, there are websites you can try to use but they rely on players using their mods (which is against ToS) to search and update pricing. Things like https://www.ffxivmb.com/

But a lot of it really is patience. If there were very quick and easy ways to get rich, everyone would do it. Just like real life, it takes special knowledge and/or a lot of hard work to get there. Btw, when you're getting things like Gysahl Greens, you're making sure to buy from vendors, right?

*Note*
I'm assuming you know this, but if you look at item descriptions it always shows if items can be desynthesized, how much you can sell to a vendor, but then it also says Shop Selling Price. It's very important to pay attention to that. If you see it can be bought from a vendor cheaper, then be careful on blowing money on the Market and all. On their database it shows where items can be purchased and/or what it takes to craft it.

Yes, that's my main on Siren. I started a new character on Primal's Famfrit to play with my friend and sister (newcomers), and realized just how little I had finally and how much I actually spent in game. As for your earlier reply, yea, I make sure to buy them from vendors and whatnot. And I'm not sure I'm comfortable using mods, so I'll just do it the manual way and track through the board. :D

Just do bunny fates in Eureka. You'll make millions in a days, and that's if you don't find a mount to sell.

Also, a good tip for leveling through the game on a new character is to sell on the Market Board the HQ gear you get from quest rewards that you don't necessarily need. Easy money.

You don't need to be buying food other than really cheap fruit to give you the flat 3% EXP buff.

The potentially cheapest option is alligator pears sold on the marketboard – they're leftovers from a class quest requiring people to gather loads of them looking for HQ ones. So you can often get those selling in big stacks for 1 or 2 gil apiece. If not then the cheapest fixed prices from NPCs are oranges from the culinarians' guild in Limsa (3 gil) or milk from the material suppliers in the main city market halls.


I would also guess that if you're "being prepared" with food, you may also be buying new gear as you level up. You only need to be geared for the content you're currently doing, because you'll be synched back down anyway, and the MSQ will be giving you gear from quests. You also get one piece of gear for your class guaranteed to drop at the end of every dungeon.

And have you unlocked the challenge log? There's a lot of free gil to be had from that.

Yes, mostly we have food from quests, but sometimes it runs out so we buy some cheap stuff from vendors, like raisins or something. I'll check for the alligator pears today. And yes, we finally found where to unlock the challenge log and unlocked it last night. We're gonna do it today as well.

Something else to look into are Levequests. There are usually one or two per tier that have very easy material requirements and will net you a decent amount of gil; especially if you can find easy ones with triple turn ins.

If you don't mind having to go back out and collect materials to make gear as you level up, sell everything you get as long as it's going for at least 2x price you can get from a vendor. This will make sure you're not actually losing money due to market board fees. It may not seem like much at the time, but every little bit helps.

Unless you're using the materials for GC or Levequest turn-ins, sell all the HQ items you gather as they sell faster and make more money per sale. You'll be out leveling your personally crafted gear fast enough that making HQ versions for personal use isn't worth it. If you can reliably HQ these items, make a couple extra to put on the MB, chances are someone will buy it.

ALWAYS hand craft items. This will give you a better chance at making HQ items, will net you a lot more EXP per item which will get you leveled faster, which will allow you to make more lucrative items more quickly, etc, etc, etc.

Don't get caught up playing the Undercutting game. Find what you think to be a reasonable price for an item that isn't the lowest on the list, but isn't the highest either, and let it stay there. Demand is usually lowest during the week so people drop prices in hopes for sales. When demand goes up on the weekend chances are good that it'll sell. In some cases it's worth adjusting the price every day just to sell low-value NQ stuff to free up space to sell other things, but normally doing an adjustment on Sunday morning and sometimes mid-week helps. If you think something's valuable enough from your POV, it's worth leaving on the MB at the price you want to sell it at then wait for it to sell. It can take a while sometimes, but it'll eventually sell. I wouldn't use more than 5 slots per retainer on items like this though. Keep that low value stuff moving.

Make use of your retainers. Do as much content that gives you GC seals as possible which you will then use to buy Ventures and keep your retainers out in the field gathering things. Most of the time Quick Exploration doesn't results in big-ticket items, but sometimes it does, and with a 1 hr cool down, you can get a number of them done each day. Doing Hunting ventures is a fantastic way to target items that either sell well or can be used to make easy to craft items that sell for a decent amount.
