Lore-ish thoughts about Auri descendance/lineage

Hello !
I don't know if there is a post already about this and I'm a bit lazy to search in this ginormous forum so I'm making a new thread for this !

As stated in the title, I have thoughts about the descendance of Auri and wanted to have your opinion about this as well, so let's start !

When I speak about descendance is more about the physical features of the children. Like, I suppose Auri reproduce like every other races, and when giving birth to a child, what shape the child's horns will have, like can it be a mix of those of the two parents or only the same form as the mother's or the father's, or can they even be of a different shape?
So this thought goes the same for the scales on the body and the shape of the tail as well.

Moreover, we can legitimately speak about mixed couples as well, like Hyurs x Aura, Elezen x Hyurs, ...
In the case of Hyurs x Elezen for example, the child can be taller and maybe have demi-elf ears and will be half-hyur/half-elezen, however, in the case of Hyurs x Aura for example, what will it be?
I don't think the descendance can have both human hears and horn though may be born with horns but no tail for example.
Concerning the horns, if one of the parents is an Hyur, does the horns will automatically have the same shape as those of the Aura parent, or can they be of different shape as well?
Of course my question goes for the shape of the tail as well ! (Like same tail shape, or different, so in the end the child could be born purely hyur, purely aura, or a mix with for example horns but no tail, tail but no horns, scales or no scales as well..)

Maybe I'm giving too much concern about this but this is something I'm very interested in for my rp, so I'd like to have your thoughts about this as well, thanks in advance ! :D

Quest in Ruby Sea talked about some old story/legend-like about au'ra female and hyur male having kid together. I think they mentioned the kid being basically just au'ra, but with less scales. So, sounds like au'ra mother + non-au'ra father at least results to horns.

Please correct if I am just talking out of my bum. I am pretty sure the quest was part of Ruby Princess questline.

The lore behind race hybrids isn't terribly consistent as both Arenvald and Severa are half-Garlean on their father's side, but the latter has a third eye while the former doesn't.

There's also just not many of them in general with Hilda, the aforementioned two, and the Au Ra from that legend being the only ones mentioned/present.

Ramza and Alma are also both half Garlean/half hyur. There's a half hume/half elf baby in the First but I don't think that baby had any special model.

Au Ra reproduce like any other humanoid mammals. Maybe with other species, because the height differences between male and female are pretty big. Or the male must be veeeeery carefull xD

I believe the horns will depend on the gender and it will get the same shape of the mother or father (but just shorter of course). Same goes for the scales and tail of course.

I dont think Au Ra hybrids are possible (for the most part). Maybe some minor changes in the scales color, shorter tail, smaller height or just a bit less scales. But nothing really extraordinary. I think its pretty straight forward.

But hey, maybe its time to introduce a new race: The Lala Ra (Lalafell x Au Ra) : D


BTW:

The plural of Au Ra is Au Ra. Not Au Ri.
Auri is the adjective.

This one's a little special. Instead of just tacking an 'n' to the end of Ra, the term takes on a slight metamorphosis. Au Ra -> Auri (pronounced Ow-ree, rhymes with Maori). Example: "An Auri warrior can eat a whole turkey in a single sitting."

Actually, I believe Arenvald did have the third eye too, I did the MSQ again recently and he said that when her third eye appeared, her mother couldn't bear with it and tried to remove it herself with a knife or sthg like that, he then got a scar and wear that tattoo just to hide this.

Whereas fo Ramza we do not really know if he has the third eye due to the haircut hiding it very well, however Jenomis has the third eye so we can't say for sure half-garleans all have the third eye or not.

I want to believe and I do believe mixed couples (or hybrid as you call them) are possible, like Aura x Hyurs cause they're quite similar, or even Elezen x Aura and at least reproduction between them would work. On the other side I don't believe reproduction would be possible between two races that are too different physically like Lalafell x Hyurs or Lalafell x Hrothgar !
Also there's one thing to distinguish, this does not prevent two persons to fall in love, even if they're from different races and even if they know they can't have children, I'm only speaking here about mixed couples I believe reproduction would be possible :)

Elezen are pretty tall. Maybe female Elezen and male Au Ra... .

But female Au Ra are shorter than female Hyurs. It may be possible to have a male Lalafell x female Au Ra couple >: D

I guess the line for compatibility between races is Hyur. Everything taller than a Hyur may fit for male Au Ra. Everything below for female Au Ra.

I never noticed, that Au Ra males are the 2nd tallest, while females are the 2nd shortest race... O_O

Back when Arenvald was written, it was said by multiple characters that only purebloods get the third eye. Arenvald himself said that his mother went crazy and thought there was a third eye growing when there wasn't. Severa is a recent shake-up to the canon. She's half-Garlean from her father's side but she has a black third eye, and is the only character in the game with a black third eye.

We know Ramza doesn't have a third eye because the game model data. And Jenomis is a pureblood Garlean so he has a normal third eye. Not all pureblood Garleans use the elezen body. Off the top of my head, Midas, Jenomis, and a dancer on the theater airship straight up use midlander hyur bodies with a third eye pasted on while Cid has a unique body pasted on top of a midlander skeleton so he's just as short as midlanders and has their emotes.

Perhaps severa's is the lump arenvald mentioned: its not a true third eye but its certainly there and obvious enough.

With half breeds OP the result generally takes more after the mother's race. This is why hilda is closer to a hyur than an elezen. Similar thing with the au ra from legend, her child had less scales than usual.

Its known that each of the base 5 races can have offspring together, and with au ra that seems to continue. Unknown on viera and hrothgar.
Regarding horns, given genes sometimes skip a generation and sometimes dont, there's probably no consistent basis on which horn types an au ra gets.

Before Severa existed, both Arenvald and Cid said that half-Garleans don't have third eyes. Ramza and Alma also don't have third eyes. At this point I think it's probably an evolution of the lore over time and we might see more half-Garleans in Endwalker that have black third eyes. Arenvald and Cid's explanation might either be retconned or forgotten.

The reason why Hilda looks the way she does is because it's easier to plop a unique head on a midlander body than it is to create a whole new hybrid body. The reason why the fanon that hybrids look like their mom is because RPers want to RP as people who are half-X, despite there not being and half-anything character options.

I thought it had a basis in actual genetics and etc.?

Biology 101
You take half your DNA from your mom and half from your dad. You do not take everything from your mom with just a little bit of tweaks from your dad. That's not how genetics work. You, as a (presumably) human have 23 pairs of chromosomes. One of each of the pairs comes from mom and the other part of the pair comes from dad. The only weird part of it is if you're biologically male because then one of your sex chromosomes is a Y and is smaller than the other sex chromosome. But you still have 22 other pairs of identically sized chromosomes.

Granted, this is a fantasy game, but "developers not wanting to make a unique character model for a side character" makes more sense to me than "the writers decided to have weird genetics in the game and not tell us about it".

This could also tie in with the OP's original ask for horn inheritance. But granting that this is an MMO with a limited character creator, I'd assume that there would be more than just 4 horn designs if this were a real world.

What do you mean by the OP?

I personally kind of maintain this idea that they're ALL essentially "human", but that each "race" is essentially its own set of dominant genes. Hyur are kind of the middle man, or "set of recessive genes". So if an Au Ra and a Miqo'te had a child, that child would EITHER be Miqo'te or Au Ra, not necessarily a "hybrid". The exception being Hyur, whose children would probably be less-pronounced versions of the other parent's heritage (ie. Hilda).

To me, it's the only thing that really makes sense. Especially given we've seen all races, but ESPECIALLY Roegadyn's have a thing for Miqo'te girls, it seems likely that all the races are... shall we say, "compatible", but the kids are likely to only take after one parent's race or the other.

Lord only knows how Hrothgar factor into things, though. Especially since Runas is clearly in love with Y'shtola, it... raises some questions...

That still doesn't make sense from a biology point of view. You can't have all of your genes be dominant. Unless you are cloned or bud off of another living being, you're going to have a blended mix of your parents' DNA. For example, if a corgi and a golden retriever have puppies together, they're usually going to come out looking like a blend of both of them, not like cartoons where the girls look like the mom and the boys look like the dad or the other way around.

Koji Fox has already said that all of the races are compatible, but hybrids are rare. The reason why everyone's not mixed already is because there is a very powerful social taboo against mating and serious relationships between races. 3 of the 4 pairings that led to 100% confirmed half-race children were non-consensual or at the very least, implied to be. There's also a couple chased out of their village for being a hyur and a miqo'te.

The only hybrids we've seen so far are hyur/elezen and hyur/garlean and those 3 races seem to be the closest related anyway. He did say that the five Eorzean races at least have the possibility to intermingle and produce a baby, but I don't think we'd probably see any other hybrids in the game. There is no mention made of beastmen or hrothgar, who seem to be closer to beastmen than the original 5 races. Then there's viera who already have strange biology, different from the others.

That all said, I'm still of the mind that highlander hyur are part roegadyn. Besides the fact they have similar nose shapes to roegadyn and are much more built than midlanders, there's even an NPC or two that have brought up that possibility, though as a joke/insult, in background dialogue.

In actual biology, sure. I just chalk it up to one of many differences in the FFXIV universe. As you mention, hybrids are rare; TOO rare to simply be "social stigma" preventing them. I figure, at their core, all races probably originated from the same race (Hyur, or something else), and while they've become different races over time, there's still that core heritage.

And maybe the racial differences are more than simple "evolution". What if actual deities "blessed" these various tribes, causing their change? For example, maybe Rhalgr gave shape to the first Highlanders, maybe Halone played a part in shaping the Elezen (or at least Ishgardians). Or maybe when the beings of Amaurot were "shattered" into different reflections, they took on forms based loosely on what kind of people they were, leading to that "share heritage", but very few "hybrids"?

Really, Hrothgar continue to be kind of the big question-mark for me. They're definitely the most "exotic" race of the bunch, to the point I have a harder time imagining them sharing any sort of heritage with anyone else.

I used to think Aura were the most exotic race before Hrothgar release. Mi'qote would be to like we could wonder how they got furry ears and tail, but in the case of Aura, they tried to make us believe they are not descendant of the dragons.. I still think there's a link between them tbh. Especially when you look at the first arts in the HW artbooks, Aura were supposed to be a dragon-looking race, even demonic one as they were drawn as succubus-looking as well, or may be they are linked to both as well. Unless I missed some interviews where Koji-Fox and Oda clearly stated this is purely a coincidence (a coincidence I would not be inclined to accept)

Therefore if we assume the DNA mix to apply in the game too, it's clear that an aura hybrid (from Hyur x Aura for example) will take after the Aura parent (whether it's the father or the mother), and will not purely be Hyur nor Aura, but blended like in the tale with similar horns (I also think there are more than 4 horn designs, like in Sui you see some children with the same horns as my Aura -> see my pfp, but with the horns horizontally tilted), and less scales, shorter tail or no tail maybe let's be crazy !

But after all, we can take whatever liberties we want ! I just wanted to have your thoughts about this as well and thanks :)

And with all those scales, the look more like dragons than voidsent.

The only issue I have is, that Raen doesnt have a real homeland (unlike Xaela).

Is somewhere stated, that Raen or Xaela are good in swimming or diving?

Raen are also from the steppe. They just collectively decided at some point that they were sick of all the bickering and warring between the tribes and moved away in search of greener pastures; some westward into Ilsabard, others east into Othard, where in both cases they largely adopted the culture of the peoples already living there.

There's apparently Au Ra in Thavnair as well as per its lore blurb on the Endwalker website, so I'd assume they too are Raen.

Yeah, the final design resulted in them looking more like dragons than voidsent, but them coming from the steppes or Thavnair does not solve the issue of them descending or not of the dragons.

It's just said somewhere that they befriended the green Kojin that blessed them so they could live under the sea, I guess those one are good in swimming or diving since they mostly live from fishing around and business via Tamamizu, concerning the other raens that spread throughout Ilsabard and elsewhere I wouldn't know

I've always thought that it was a bit weird that a dragon-like race is introduced in an expansion that is all about dragons. But besides Koji saying in interviews that they're 100% not related to dragons, Shadowbringers put the final nail in the coffin of that theory because there are au ra on the First (though named something suspiciously similar to "dragon"), and we now know that dragons came to the Source from a different planet after the Shattering had already separated the First from the Source.

Raen, like hyur, seem to be adaptive and far-spreading. But I would be inclined to argue that Doma or Hingashi could count as sort of a homeland for them. Though they make up a minority in both countries, the governor of Kugane is a raen and we meet a raen princess from Hingashi in the ninja storyline. I don't believe we know the race of the emperor or the shogun, but at least that tells us that there are raen clans that are powerful in the government of Hingashi despite fully assimilating to the culture of the native hyur to that region.

I think there were a few Xaela tribes mentioned that were based around swimming and diving and one that can hold their breath for a long time. Then there's the raen clan that live in Sui-no-Sato who live underwater and naturally would have to swim a lot. Going back to when I first played Stormblood I was wondering if au ra actually were originally aquatic since I thought that having horns for ears would help with being underwater. Even though the underwater au ra can breath water, that doesn't help with water pressure as far as I know and going deep down would make your ears hurt, so not having ear drums at all would help.

I was wondering if their horns may work even better underwater. Especially for those living in Sui No Sato. Their tail could also help to swim faster.

Yeah, well, I was nitpicking a bit with their relation to dragons but well, let's put this aside.
Concerning their homeland I'd be tempted to say they mostly come from hingashi/doma as well, but as Mikko said, they're fast spreading and adapting to the local culture. The lore say that they even spread to the west and north-west of Ilsabard besides, since a few weeks we know they founded Radz-at-Han in Thavnair with the Matanga. Concerning the Raen from Sui-no-Sato, they only represent about 10% of the total Raen that exist and their ability to breath underwater comes from the Green Koji spell/blessing and, as far as this goes, the spell may give them the possibility to sustain the pressure underwater.

It's not something we have to reckon with in reality because there's only one species that has "human-style intelligence", but in a fantasy setting where there are multiple intelligent species then you're inevitably going to have some people who fall in love with someone who isn't biologically compatible with them.

This is fanon that often gets repeated here and on RP forums, but there's no actual source for it in interviews or in the game. Neither does it make any sort of sense genetically. The reason why Hilda looks the way she does is because it's easier to plop a unique head on a midlander body than it is to create a whole new hybrid body. The reason why the fanon that hybrids look like their mom is because RPers want to RP as people who are half-X, despite there not being and half-anything character options.

Can you provide the actual quote that supports that claim?

I looked up the interview with Koji from the first fanfest and it's not mentioned there. All I can find on this being a thing is fanon that keep getting repeated as if it's canon.

But concerning about the Au Ra in the First: Those where called "Drahn", which is very similiar for the dragon speak word "dra[n]" (which means dragon). I mean, they got horns, a tail, scales. And in their folklore/history/origin they believe they are the descendants of Nhaama and Azim (or better: Tiamat and Bahamut, both dragons).

I believe its more likely that one part is more dominant than the other part. In a Au Ra x Miqo'te couple, it may be more possible to have a pure Au Ra or Miqo'te child than a hybrid of both. With some rare exceptions of course.

I still wonder, why Yugiri have a more unique design than most other Au Ra.

Although we don't see a lot of Au ra children, we do have enough knowledge to make a few guesses. First the Side Horns are actually Ears, and apearantly grow large as a child, but the inference is that the Horns are small buds when born. Also most of the player races count as Human for the sake of species classification. It's mentioned a few times in side quests that Elezen, Hyur, and Roegadyn can and do mix their blood at times. Garlean as well. It's not clear if Viera, Hrothgar, Lalafell, and Miqo’te can mix with others, and in some ways it's implied Miqo’te can't due to spoilers with bloodlines in Shadowbringer. However, there is a mention of an Au Ra/Hyur Child so... yeah. Au Ra might be closer to Humans than Miqo’te.

As to tails, our only clue are the Miqo'te children who are born with stubby tails that eventually grow out to long beautiful tails. SO I kind of think that Au Ra kids will look fairly human until they start to grow and then their horns and tails would become the glorious dragonlike features they have as adults.
