Are wands and shields discontinued for WHM?

I kinda like the thought of being able to block while leveling another healer (sch mainly, so the loss of shields is rough to get used to though) while also standing out a little, but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find conjurer shields and wands as I level up with it.

Did they discontinue the idea of them after ARR for just canes or am I just not seeing them drop?

you can still on the rare occasion get a parry with any job and weapon so dont worry

funnily enough though they did have a small resurgence recently because of bozja, a level 80 zone that ups stats and levels inside. so a level 1 wand and shield was better than a level 80 cane in that zone

Hell, they killed it before ARR even ended. Leviathan EX is the last Extreme to drop a Wand/Shield combo, with Ramuh onward only dropping a Staff. Kinda surprised the Wand/Shield combo lasted as long as it did.

And I'm aware of Bozja (still need to look for that mount..), but that's funny that a wand and shield outdoes a cane, but I'm guessing they adjusted it since then or just not worth it as much anymore?

SEN (Sentinel) was more for GLA as only GLA could make use of SEN abilities (which mostly became GLA abilities by default when SEN was rolled into GLA anyway), but THM and CNJ could equip certain shields and thus gain SP towards SEN. This all changed when the 1.0 battle system was redesigned circa 1.20 patch and SP was removed, and Class Rank became Class Level, and Jobs were added, so SEN was rolled into GLA to make it a better fit for PLD which naturally was all about defense with a shield, and shields became classless. But certain types of shields could still be equipped to THM and CNJ given there was plenty of single handed wands/rods those two classes used, and this continued into ARR.

However, as the end game CNJ/WHM and THM/BLM weapons in ARR were exclusively 2-handed, this fell by the wayside, and so there was an expectation that no one would use single handed weapons for those classes anymore (I believe there was a level 50/item level 95 Allagan single handed rod for THM/BLM, and a level 50/item level 100 CNJ/WHM single-handed Primal wand in ARR's patch scenario, but I think they were the last ones ever added.).

Either way, single-handed weapons for THM/BLM and CNJ/WHM are a legacy of 1.0 that has since been left behind I'm afraid, and you will only find two-handed weapons in recent content for those Jobs.

It's a shame they discontinued them. Was it just too much work to offer two sets of weapons for THM/BLM and CNJ/WHM?

Yeah, they have to spend that time designing a special set of armor specifically for Dragoon in every single new set of content. Good thing Reaper's going to share with it in 6.0, 'cuz I always thought it was funny we have the "all four tanks" set, the "all three healers" set, the "all four casters set", and...yep Dragoon gets its own exclusive set every patch.

Thank god! Hope they can find a new solutions for paladin.
It was AWFUL when you had to roll for both the wand and the healer shield. Most of the time you would get only one of the two.
Either they should come as a set or they should not bother dong this again.

It was more that the drop system as it originally functioned could not be forced to drop both parts of a weapon+shield pair together. For a long time Paladins were at risk of only getting partial upgrades as they might see only the sword drop or only the shield drop. As stats are split between the 2 items missing out on one of them put them behind everyone else on gear and both BLM and WHM suffered from it worse as a 2-handed weapon with a higher ilevel was always an upgrade but a higher ilevel 1-handed weapon was often a downgrade as they often did not have a high enough ilevel shield to pair with the new weapon.

You should note that pretty much all the modern Maiming sets are recolors of the tank sets.

Surprisingly weird Ninja use a similar looking gear to ranged but not the ranged gear.
In ARR I think most ranged armor were shared with Melees, the Strength and Dex stats were equal.
And accessories are shared between Nin and ranged.

I'd say it's really surprising that Reaper didn't used Ninja armors, it doesn't even looks like an armored job.

I'd at least like the ability to glamour a wand and shield onto my BLM and CNJ, could make for some very cool outfits.

You can use them again in Bozja and DR.
You don't lose any stats with them due to the way how the syncing works there.

I thought they did come as a set nowadays? I recall running Byakko when it was relevant and the Paladin weapon dropped 3 times in a row. Each time it was both the sword and shield together, so why can't the same happen for wands and conjurer shields again if they already show (and even account tomestones for split purchase on main and off hand weapons) they can do it currently?

And then all they'd really have to do is placate them strictly as CNJ, WHM equipment much like every shield after 50 is GLA, PLD so no one gets screwed out of anything short of having 2 WHM (but nothing stops the same from happening if you have 2 paladins in a trial either).

So why not just do the same for wands and shields then??? Not like the Off-Hand tab gets any use unless you're a crafter or paladin specifically.

Not sure how much of a programming issue it is, but using weapon coffers as an example, how would a White Mage or Black Mage go about with getting either option? And as minor as it is, people would probably call you out for trolling the party using two-handed weapons, because you're effectively giving up the possibility of damage mitigation through blocking (tryharding) for vanity. :p

Incidentally, would the one hander and shield combo remain unique for White Mages and Black Mages? Why not the other healers and casters?

I personally don't miss the wonky stages of vanilla A Realm Reborn gearing - as a poor noob, being unable to use gear upgrades because of the silliness that was the Darklight Cowl and such was beyond annoying.

Thankfully they dropped those for WHM and BLM. I always thought they I looked super dump when I first started the Game in 2013

Why not just give both for weapon coffers for choice and just discard/desynth/sell what isn't wanted? And if that's the best they could do is call you out on your choice of a weapon between 1 hand and 2 hand, that's on them for being sad enough to start something over something that literally doesn't affect them. And yes, the shield and 1hw would stay with blm and whm because they've had them historically, no point in trying to force it on others who've never had it in the first place. (and incidentally, the darklight cowl looks awesome for glam at least)

But every step of the way you had canes you could use as well if you didn't want the wand and shield, so it's not like you were forced to use it.

While I understand why they got rid of shields, I don't get why they got rid of the one-hand weapons for WHM and BLM.
I checked WHM's animations with a wand equipped and none of them seemed weird to me. This would also open up more weapons designs for both.
The only reason I can think of is that they're potentially saving them for a new job like how they swapped all the knives and daggers from PLD when NIN was added. :B

WHM's awkward Frankenstein monster stance with staves is largely a relic of the wand + shield era, iirc. That's a minor gripe but they still look really weird stiffly holding their canes straight out in their combat stance.

For aesthetic reason, I personally prefer the smaller Wands cause they don't clip like crazy with a lot clothing.

But hey, it is what it is I guess.

I wish they would just convert all wands and staves into "Conjurer Arms" instead of separating them with 1h / 2h, and deleting their shields.

This way we could still benefit from the sizeable number of wands ingame, especially the two FFXIII collab THM/CNJ arms that are super cool, STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE, despite being completely useless since you can't glam them into anything post ARR.

I really miss the aesthetic of a stave and shield.
They could have made some interesting looking designs if they kept at it.
