Is anybody else having a noticeably worse connection today?
I've seen more than a few people in game talking about server lag the last few days. It isn't affecting everyone though. Comcast has supposedly been experiencing some issues, which is something that also keeps being brought up.
Comcast ISP here. Its been pretty dogshit for me and has been effecting my raids.
Comcast as well, pretty much everyone I've talked to who uses Comcast or a smaller ISP that relies on their networks has been having issues with the game of late. Especially later in the evening. There's not much SE can do about it since it's not a problem on their end.
People have been talking about lag all week in every piece of content I've done. It seems to affect specific ISPs because I am unaffected.
It definitely got worse today compared to the last several days. I left a DR raid because I died twice to the first boss with 20 second lag spikes. FFXIV is unplayable right now for me with Comcast.
The general consensus is to use a VPN to get around it. My router doesnt support VPNs (ISP provided router) so I am SOL :/
Very laggy for me on Comcast as well. It was a problem the last couple days but today it's really bad.
Sounds like it's not just comcast people right now, because folks without comcast are getting hit by it in large busts...
Maybe it's being around comcast people that are making it unplayable, as we're waiting for them?
Even simple teleports are taking two to three minutes to load.
Super bad lag for at least 3-4 days. Haven't been able to do any battle content. Just getting through menus (market board, retainers, npcs) takes ages.
Using Comcast.
We actually have a topic on this over the French forums, we noticed lag too, but with various ISPs. For me it only happens at night (when I raid, so it's awful), but during the day or just past the "peak night hours" it is back to normal.
I was wondering if the 5.5 maintenance could be fixing this, but I'm doubtful as it seems not related to SE servers this time.
Comcast as well, been getting fairly bad lag (mostly people sliding around or skills clipping into one another) around the late evening hours for a good few days now. Had to bail on doing a run of Castrum last night because it was so bad.
Lag? As in where..? NA, JP, EU? We're not all Americans. Being on Chaos datacenter myself I've not noticed anything out of the ordinary.
Have comcast. Been off and on the last several days.
Works fine for half the day, then monsterous lag spikes the rest. Aka game freezing then going in fast forward constantly.
I been slow casting the long spells on rdm WITH the instant duel cast buff active on my buff bar constantly making it really hard to raid. Other comcast people in my group having the exact same problem. In US btw.
It’s been bad the last few days. Usually 2-3 seconds behind real time for me, but last night I was basically doing my dailies as a slideshow.
Comcast, US.
My favorite part about all this is seeing when a dead person gets "revived" but their character stays "dead" and I see floating dead bodies just hovering everywhere in raids and stuff lately.
Fun fun.
I've noticed there always seems to be more instances of lag in the week leading up to a patch and the week after it, then it smooths out. I'm with AT&T and have had that happen in the past. I'm not experiencing it this time but I've definitely heard others talking about it.
I feel as if FFXIV has had problems with DNS services with particular ISPs in the past. Anyways, I downloaded Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for PC (free) and it fixed my lag issue. https://1.1.1.1/
Its 100% coincidence that you've noticed it near a patch. Unfortunately, ISPs in NA have 0 incentive to have reliable networks with alternate routes. If it works for browsing the internet and watching youtube, most of their customers are happy and why go above and beyond that.
XIV hates packet loss. You drop a packet and the game DC's. Websites and video streaming don't care. Some games have refresh times coded in, but XIV doesn't seem to. But then, on the other hand, we don't have to deal with buggy, intrusive anti-cheat systems so...
right around the time this thread was made there was a huge lagspike for me as well and I'm not american, so I highly doubt it was tied to US ISPs and more likely a server hiccup on SE's end that didn't affect everyone
Internet is NOT point to point. It goes through many hops. If your connection routes through the hop that was having the issue, you get lag.
What country you are from doesn't matter. How traffic gets routed does.
What you just said is the equivalent of saying "yeah, there was a traffic jam in Texas, and I'm heading to California along the southern US, but since I'm from Brazil, it doesn't effect me. It must be California's fault"
I have Spectrum and I've been getting some pretty bad lag spikes over the past week.
It can be a comcast issue even for people who dont have comcast as their ISP, if their ISP uses comcasts lines at some point. Not all ISPs own the full length of their connections, and even then, they have to connect outside the ISP at some point. This is likely where the bad node is, which is why it effects people not on comcast, and people who have comcast.
And yes, you did in fact say "its most likely an issue on SE's servers that didn't effect everyone"
I'm simply trying to correct misconceptions on how people connect to things over the internet, as many don't seem to understand how it all works, and SE takes the brunt of the blame for things completely out of their control most of the time.
Very very few instances exist these days where the servers themselves are the issue, and we get updates on those when they happen via the lodestone.
I'm not sure if it's just ISP, or perhaps there's a bump in the tubes we are all going through. Doing alliance raids for the relic and have been watching alliance members get the red ring of death over the past two nights. Seen tanks dc and just did myself.
This is on primal
It's a problem with a node that SE and Comcast communicate thru. It's something Comcast can fix, and it's something NTT can fix, but there's no amount of work that can fix it on XIV's end other than someone from SE talking to someone from NTT. And considering the amount of cheaping-out that's been going on in the US lately in regards to ISPs (NTT being the middleman ISP SE uses for Comcast), it's highly likely they'll bandaid fix it and the problem will happen again one or two years down the line (this happened before a few years ago according to the forums. Like this very issue, with comcast users and users who's ISPs used Comcast's lanes.)
There's a bandaid fix userend that you can try, I'll link it. Otherwise stick with a VPN that can bypass the node that's having issues (eg using Mozilla VPN and routing it thru LA seems to work for a lot of people)

https://mudfish.net/
This is the solution I linked in another thread and it seemed to work for some people. Give that a try as well (may end up cheaper than the Mozilla VPN solution too! You only pay for what you use and a user indicated that for several hours of XIV gameplay they paid 12 cents out of the $5 they put in.)
Edit:
Another fix that worked for some other people. If the above two don't work then try this.
Unfortunately I'm on PS4 using the Xfinity modem-router combo. I have a VPN already for my computer but in order for my PS4 to connect through that VPN I would need to install it on a separate router as the Xfinity one does not support VPNs.
I'm also on Comcast, gigabit but not like it matters with this company, these issues started occurring a few days ago for me. The game was honestly unplayable for me. It's worth changing your dns to cloudflare or google. If you're using a router do it there or if you have a straight connection to your modem then use the normal ip4 or ip6 settings. Just google how to change your dns if you're unsure of the process. It doesn't harm anything and you can always revert back to your normal dns later on by simply reverting the changes you've made.
I have Comcast and the lag seems to pop up after 10 PM EST time. Friday night it was just horrible doing Titan Unreal. It was fine till the later stages, then I would freeze for like 10-30 seconds, which of course killed me.
To fix it I got my company's cell phone and made a hot spot with it, then connected my computer wirelessly to it. Lag went bye-bye and I had no more issues that night.
Saturday I installed a free VPN on my computer and used it Saturday night with Titan Unreal again. No Lag at all and I played until Midnight EST time. So yeah, it's related to Comcast somehow, at least with my issue.
I really hope it goes away soon, then again I rarely play late anyway, so I can just not right now to avoid the current issues if need be.
