A More Convenient Combo System

By setting up a chain combo hotkey, it'll allow the game to let you put all your favorite skills combo in one. Rather than pressing 1,2,3, you can just execute a combo by pressing 1,1,1. The skill icon on the action bar will change to correspond correctly with the combo. Typically, after you use the first chain skill, that icon on your action bar switches to one of the second chain skills, because you can't use it if you don't use the chain start skill first.

This way you can just concentrate on combat without pressing so many skill buttons, and flicking through the action bar. It is not always easy pressing 3-5 icons on the action bar and timing them correctly, especially if you're a PLD. The pace of combat is fast in this game, so players should not be burdened. Comboing should only require correct positioning, and timing. This will also help with PvP.



Edit: since some need more clarification. I think it is safe to assume we'll get more skills and abilities in the future, and at some point in time the action slots wont be able to hold everything.

What if I want to use a skill out of combo?

What if I want to use only the first 2 skills in the combo? If the 3rd is on cooldown?

What about the variety of combos that branch out of a single skill?

I dont know. Doesn't seem well thought out. Personally I think the system is fine as is, but the action bar itself can use a facelift. Though 2.0 is giving that isn't it?

I believe that should answer all your questions.

Your whole idea gets torn apart when the first ability gets ready for a second use before the combo timer expires, if the first ability's button gets replaced with the second ability for the duration of the combo, how do you trigger the first one again without pulling a combo? there may be valid reasons, such as preserving the second ability (with a longer recast) for a more appropriate time.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out pal. You're thinking about the current combo system we have now. When I said "chain combo skills" I literally meant that. I'll elaborate more. Skills that branch into a tree, letting you use some skills only after you use a specific one.

I think I'll put this in the OP as well.

Maybe they could have a separate UI popup action-bar that shows you (for quick reference) what possible combo actions are available and you can click on them from the popup menu (if you want to). And then the popup goes away as soon as combo is selected or it times out.

Personally, I just put all my combo actions right next to each other on my combo bar. So I just press (for example) 1,2,3.

yeah, that is a good addition for mouse users. it'll help prevent switching through action bars when you really need to focus on fighting. also the option to allow it to pop up or not is also good. for instance it'll be great for skills like phalanx, and feint.

Well they could assign the popup actions to F1, F2, F3 etc., to accommodate keyboard users also.

Honestly, I feel like the current system is fine as is. With proper placement of skills on the action bar, pacing is not an issue at all. I can see this becoming even easier with 2.0's UI which will include an upgraded action bar with greater functionality.

The current system is fine, may need a few tweaks but the idea you are proposing seems to me it is pointless, if you have to switch bars consistently to combo then you need to rework your bar, I never have to switch bars.. rarely.. I set up macros for my ALT 1-0.. utilize the current system more before you want to change it..

I have, which is exactly why I want it to be more convenient....

May I also ask which job do you play most frequently? If you're a magic class then obviously you have it easy. Secondly do you honestly think the number of abilities and skills you have now will stay the same?

Just because it seems fine now doesn't mean it'll be convenient for any additional combo chains in the future.

I play Monk, Warrior, Paladin, Black Mage more frequently then the rest.. and yes I understand that we are not at cap but even then.. do you think every single ability we have will be used at 99??(if thats cap) I am sure some combos will deemed unworthy down the road as well..

but still doesnt change the fact that you can still macro ctrl 1-0 and alt 1-0 thats an extra 20 slots you can utilize without swapping action bars..

and you're proposing an idea because of what might happen in the FUTURE, lets not get ahead of ourselves now.. 2.0 isn't even out yet and you want to change combo design for convenience?

why not make a feature that once you do the first ws of the combo the AI does the rest for you? moves for ya, attacks for ya.. now thats convenience...

To answer your first question. Most likely yes. Look at the combos we have now for BLM/THM. Every combo have a starting skill to start the chain.

I will address your other weak points as well. ctrl 1-0 and alt 1-0 still involves more button pressing, and what I'm proposing will eliminate that extra burden, and you're able to keep your eye on the screen. What is better, pressing 2-3 buttons for one combo skill or just one button consecutively. You be the judge

Stop with the speculation on how you think the new abilities will be.. you're going off on what BLM/THM is and you don't need to combo to use them abilities..

I have to agree w/ SynysterBlitz macros do all of what you just said. If you use them well/properly, a single ctrl + [n] and you execute your next 1~10 commands w/ delays where needed for you to reposition yourself. If you can't find a way to make a macro that executes 5 skills w/ delays between and even fair warnings about where to stand next tossed in for simplifying your life...

And if in a skill combo you press 1,1,1,1,1 it's more presses then ctrl+1 everytime, unless you mean for the action bar to automate the remaining combo hits for you, but then it might as well just be a single ability right? Like 5hit-Go-Combo...

Macro's are convience in a nutshell, they let you do more than just use your abilities in sequence, you get to /echo /recast /party /say /wait /ac for 10 straight commands, all in a single ctrl+[n]. Do you think they're going to have skillchains that take more than 10 skills? I'm of a mind to say not gonna happen.

The only draw back from that will be getting into position for the combo before it goes off when you're not ready.

Ya nice try, you edited your initial post I made that to.. but now that I see that.. I macro my abils I use.. such as featherfoot,blood for blood, etc.. you get the drift.. so chances of missing the combo when you have had like 10 seconds to reposition is slim..

To many variables is in the way. Stun, Sleep, monster movements etc. You wasted your macro.

edit. Try to stick with combos, not buffs.

Sorry no.. I don't think you have tried these macros I speak of then yet.. before you speculate on how I possibly could get messed up with macros, the same could be said for no macros, so your point isn't valid..

and these variables you speak of, could you explain real in game circumstances these happen in??

Anyways my main point which is also in the OP is activating combos faster, being more controllable, and has less burden than pressing multiple buttons. Macros is fine yes, but it have many variables that you can't control once activated. Regardless if something were to happen that will cut your macro short or what not you cant get around that in any system.

/wait 10 should be more than enough time, hell, /wait 2 should be more than enough, if I'm hitting buttons for a combo I'm moving as soon as the animation ends to get the next hit, if it takes me 10 seconds to line up for the second hit I should not be a melee job. Not to mention that if I'm not ready to run the full combo I probably won't bother starting it, if your looking at buffing for the final hit, well put them in the macro.

Yep all those things happen, that's when you cancel your macro, if you know you can't get into position stop the macro and start again, none of the opening skills have long recasts if your not going to be able to get into position by a /wait 10, you weren't going to finish the combo anyway more likely than not.
