Do you think certain jobs influence the gear of their class more than others?

(NOTE: by "class" I'm talking about Fending, Healing, Aiming, etc, not the actual classes like THM or ARC)

I've been wondering about this for a little bit. It feels like most gear in the classes of Casting, Healing, etc were designed for one specific job in mind and fails to acknowledge the aesthetics of the other jobs that share the gear. But I want to asks if you have similar opinions, and if so, which jobs do you think have control over the armor class' aesthetics (besides Maiming and Scouting, which have obvious answers for obvious reasons)

Healing gear mostly have a WHMish vibe.

Yes, I often feel that certain sets are tailored more towards one of the multiple jobs being able to wear them - even more so if there are even shared sets (most often the case with casters and healers). I often "envy" dragoons because they actually do always get gear made specifically for them. However I do feel like they do a good enough job of balancing that out (like having one tank-set feel more natural on paladin, but the next more tailored to warrior etc.) or also just having "neutral" sets alltogether.

I'd say the job who got the shortest stick here is actually dancer - a lot of the Aiming gear seems to be tailored more towards bards, while still looking decent on maschnist, with some pieces (mainly the allagan ones) being reversed. Non of those really fit the dancer all to well - but since most gear was designed before dancer was included in the game, that does seem fair to me (here is hoping that in the future more sets will be more dancer-inclusive - for all races, I might add. I want more outfits that look like you can and would wear them to present a dance in thats NOT a bellydance).

This is actually the reason why I'm always a bit against the idea of making every gear available to every job straight away and why I'm opposed to the idea of making AF-sets wearable by anyone expect the job they're made for. With this "one fits all"-gear we're already seeing that gear thats designed to fit multiple jobs tends to look like its more leaning towards one of them - without ever fitting any of them 100% (like AF gear usually does). It all gets a bit wishy-washy once its "for everyone" instead of tailored specifically for one job.

Tank gear seems to be neutral to the jobs and instead is tailored towards the instance it's dropped from.

Yeah I kinda feel like there is a lean towards PLD/DRK, but that might be confirmation bias. I ha vent really seen anything viking esque save the Noct gear and the most GNBesque armor is the AF and crafted generic pieces

I had observed that the older jobs have prescience, esp is they had a gear class to themselves like MNK and BRD previous have and DRG and (mostly) NIN still do (course even then DRG is likely to have more PLD/DRK esque gear and NIN shared early ARR gear with MNK and their current gear could go between that or Phys Ranged).

Agreed on the AF. But I'm not opposed to unlocked replica sets of specific gear like the similar job-locked PVP gear (Wolfseye, Birdsong, etc).

Of course I also agree that most of the gear seemed too generic, which prolly explains my attachment to the Animaliege gear and the contest winners (esp Bonewicca). Of course the geenricness is not (as) germane to this thread outside of that BLM resembles classic wizards.

Actually I feel like most aiming gear is tailored towards a high fantasy ranger, which doesn't even exist in this game.

Edit: on hindsight, would probably make more sense to have them tailer to a neutral ranged concept instead of a particular job. Would still love to get a more pure ranger job in this game. And yeah fantasy bard looks kind of like a ranger anyway so I've made a pretty useless remark.

I'm always a bit torn on that - on the one hand I'm thinking "Well, where would be the harm in unlocking a set thats several years old now? It has been designed with that job in mind and fits it very well, but if people want to glamour it onto other jobs now, why not?" - while another (maybe overly cautious?) part of my brain goes: "But doesnt that increase the chance that future sets wont be tailored aswell anymore, because the artist are - even if only subconsciously - thinking 'Well, this is going to be worn by all jobs eventually, so better not make it to unique/distinct'" - which is the reasoning I suspect behind the shared job-sets never looking like they're really fitting any of their jobs aswell as "unique" job-sets, like AF or Maiming and Scouting gear does. Even though I feel like certain shared sets match one job better than the others, its never quite "perfect" - kinda a bit like "Yeah, this set is 60% bard, 30% maschnist and 10% dancer" (if that makes sense?).

I understand your concern, but with regards to the mentioned animalliege sets, that ship's already sailed. Job locking sdin't sop them being being model swaps of each other (only Snake, Bear, Wolf, Hawk and Bat are locked to a specific Job where as Swan, Lion, Elk, and Bird were repeated for Owl, Lynx, Elk (again) and Parrot gear for other Jobs). Oc this is tangential.

I find good dancer appearances often involve having to glamour things that aren't necessarily role/class gear at all. The wedding dress makes a superb dancer glam, for instance, because it swirls in the most amazing way. Similarly, right now I'm using the Kupo Pants, Thavnairian Sandals, and the Dalmascan Draped Top (dyed metallic gold) as a dancer glam, and it makes a look that's not all that different than something you might see someone wear on a dance competition show.

White Mage definitely influences healer gear considering most healer gear is the caster dps gear but white

I think it may not be so much that gear is deliberately biased to a single job as that role-based gear is based on a broader concept (armoured tank, wizard, etc.) and some classes sit much closer to that generic concept than others.

Yes, dang near most tank sets feel Pld/Drk inspired rarely War (Hellfire set being the only one to come to mind immediately) Gnb is the new tank but nothing has screamed bodyguard of the new sets, but i'm more forgiving on Gnb/Dnc not having more sets more appealing to them than their counterparts, atm anyway(this will change by 6.0 where I hope 1 set is tailored to them).

Striking has been reasonable mix since 4.0 favoring more sam in 4.x while mnk more in 5.x.

Casters tend to favour Blm(more) or Rdm(less so) dang near never see a Smn inspired set.

Healers are Whm inspired 95% of the time other 5% split between Ast(lv60 dungeon) and Sch(Shire).

Physical Range tends to favor Brd most Mch gets a few sets and Dnc atm is AF or glamour gear (Dnc is probably the job with the most glamour only gear being aesthetically appropriate since people dance in dang near anything and everything in rl, but FFXIV Dnc is Middle Eastern inspired so narrows it by a fair bit if wanting it thematically appropriate to FFXIV)

Yeah, like nothing default for dancer other than it's artifact gear. Have to build a glam entirely from scratch. Machinist barely gets any in comparison to bard either, it's just kind of glaring with how different each of the aiming classes are in comparison to each other aesthetically. Healing gear is pretty much always just casting gear recolored, so I wouldn't necessarily say it's always designed around white mage. I guess because sometimes you get a circlet instead of a pointy hat? but then it would have AST in mind.. what about SCH?! :p

It feels like it comes in waves to me. Earlier tank gear feels very PLD and later tank gear feels very DRK. Same with ranged DPS. There used to be a ton of BRD like gear and then we ended up with a lot of MCH like gear for a while.

Thing with paladin/drk gear. Dyed white paladin, dyed black dark knight. :) Now about WAR..

I find that the Neo Ishgardian Aiming top is actually a pretty good base for both a MCH and DNC glamour (maaaaybe for BRD, but way less so), since it gives a "Saloon girl" vibe for Dancer and an "Old-West shooter" (especially with the Makai gun) for MCH.

On to the point: yeah, I feel DNC gets shafted on most gear: E4S and E8S fit, like SamRF said, a more "fantasy ranger"-esque look that's only really close to bard. Tank seems pretty standard and Slaying... I really wouldn't know. For healer I don't think it's aesthetically tied to WHM other than it tends to be... white... and a palette swap of Caster gear which tends to be... black...

as a MCH main we barely get any tbh most aiming fits BRD/ARC and 80s had a few DNC ones. but FF!$ has so many options in glam its hardly a compliaint tbh

Hmm... I really only pay attention to Healing/Casting gear, but they feel pretty generic healer/caster to me.

This is when I realized that Dancers weren't going to be healers, that a job based around movement and dancing around would not be suited for the heavy, long white robes almost all the healing sets are styled after.

Ionno, we vibe pretty well together. Whatever the current white gear is along with the crafted gear skews more towards machinitst, and I happily wear that.

As a bard, I often have gone for a more "wild-west" look. The flowy garmets are often too repetitive and not as good as the original Amon gear.

Tricky. Depends on the set, since they tend to follow a theme for the entire raid set. Some sets are designed to amplify the theme of the raid they are gotten in. While some sets are more aimed to fit the idea of the traditional roles. ie Eden is the classic role, but previous sets put everyone in chain mail, or cloth, or dressed them in Native costumes. The 5.0+ sets when looking at them seem universally classic roles... The tank is clearly Paladin, The healer is clearly White mage, etc.

This sounds accurate, yeah. Some jobs are closer to the archetype of their respective roles (Paladin, White Mage, Black Mage off the top of my head for their three roles, Melee is a mishmash, not sure on Ranged DPS) so it makes sense that they might be closer to the generic gear they put out.

As Red Mage I shall be forever jealous of all the swank hats that Aiming has that I can’t wear.

I've noticed most range gear wasn't meant for MCH. Even the military soldier gear clips with the Aetherotransformer so clearly they didn't have that giant box in mind when designing it. M'naago wears the set and she's using a bow.

I still think they should remove or at least add the option to remove the Aetherotransformer. It's weird that only one job has this extra thing attached to their weapons that always the same model for every different weapon. Like if I want to glam a pirate outfit complete with one of the more flintlock guns, I still have this technological monstrosity hanging off my hip.

Honestly I would rather they make the transformer an off-hand even if its limited to the same number of specimens as BLU canes, plus it can open up the possibility of "The Emporer's New Aetherotransformer" as well.

I was commenting just the other day that I would love it if they let you equip Red Mage rapiers into your off hand. It’d give no stats, but would change your little floaty thing to use the appearance of the off hand’s little floaty thing.
