just wondering, 7 years since ARR we still cant speak to npc on our mount.

why though? iam not programmer but, to allow player to speak to npc while on mount shouldn't be that difficult right?

later when the ARR quest rework come out, we can even fly in ARR realm, but still no interact with npc while on mount.

it cant be programming difficulty right? for politeness? lore related? still got me thinking to this day since (i think?) ff14 is the only mmorpg out there that you must dismount if you want to talk to npc.

Because your character totally never uses gestures when talking to some NPCs.

Because its rude to talk to people on the mount XD XD just kidding .. I think its because like on patch days and events alot of people believe that they need to stand in the npc to get the quest which make it hard for some players that dont know that u can press one button to get past that.

It's nothing to do with "how much time since ARR". Mounts are big and they get in the way.

If you've seen how crowded it gets around a quest NPC when a patch has just launched, especially if talking to them triggers a long cutscene, and multiply that by a large mount for each person in the crowd...

That's why we "still" don't have mounts. By design.

Felt is was a method to make sure mounted players dont crowd and block an NPC, so it forces everyone to ground.

That or maybe its a thing with cutscenes.

Because you'll have people on literal whales blocking NPCs.

This still routinely happens in WOW to this day.

I'm glad you get dismounted.

You used to have to physically get off the mount before even addressing the NPC. Now at least it automatically gets rid of the mount. Think yourself lucky

It' hard enough to click on NPCs with people right up next to them as it is. It not hard to remount.

Here's there obligatory "press numpad 0 twice to first target and then interact with the NPC" and "press X to hide all player names and hitboxes allowing you to both see the NPC's name and click on the NPC without interference" options that go out every time this comes up.

On controllers you don't even have to do a trick, iirc, just pressing your interact button twice which does the same this as Numpad 0.

No, pressing X/interact twice just locks you onto whatever you targeted the first time.

You can set filters for what you're interacting with, but it's just not nice to have such a crowd around the quest NPCs. I wish people would stand further back so you can actually see them.

I plugged in my controller just to test this and I don't know what you're talking about? Pressing the confirm button twice behaves exactly like numpad-0 on the keyboard does for me. I.e. If you don't have something targeted then it will autotarget the closest NPC/object and pressing it a second time interacts with it. Locking onto something requires pressing down on the left analog stick (L3) which is a completely different button press entirely. I'm using the default filter "ALL" and haven't made any changes to the default gamepad settings and have zero issues targeting and interacting with any NPCs in a mob of people using the confirm button twice.

Edit: also tested on a summoning bell in Limsa surrounded by a bunch of people while standing at a distance so they'd be in the way. Just pressed A twice (I'm using an XBOX controller) and accessed it.

Something something technical limitations. Seems like such a no brainer that I hope that its some technical debt in the code rather then just a arbitrary design decision.

yeah i think the most logical reason is probably animation scene, if we are on mount our wol cant do the usual animation (surprise, point, etc) and some mount is huge so in cutscene or even in non cutscene (dialogue text) will feel weird.

speaking of animation, after playing a lot of this day modern games, i just realized how out of date ff14 animation is compare to others. while graphic still can hold up to some point, i cant help but laugh everytime i see some animation occur when in cutscene.

for a fair point, their "single" animation is still good but if there is a context or scene where they need to chain string 2 or even 3 animation, some can end up hilarious in a way

the one that always get me is the "pointing" animation, the npc talk to you, turn around, point somewhere, turn back to you to say "lets go" only to turn again and start walking. really remind me of playstation RE animation, its so stiff.

then the most common one is when npc is running toward something (monster or an enemy) they stop just to play the "pointing" animation and when its over they start running again, in this day games these 2 animation could blend into one (running while pointing) but because the limitation they cant, and it always get me every time.

and the npc/wol reading book, paper or document. lift up their hand and stare into their palm hand, at least put a paper or something on their hand will ya?

nevertheless it become one the game charm i guess

Couldn't they make it so that for MSQ and other important (or new and thus popular quests) you automatically get dismounted, but for random sidequests you would stay mounted? Then you wouldn't have 200 people on mounts blocking the NPCs.

^i think of that at first but, if you think about it that just going to double their work because they need to seperate some quest from others.

so far i see 3 type of quest...
- quest A is when you talk to npc it goes to full cutscene with or without voice (mostly MSQ)
- quest B is when you talk to npc, it change to cinematic dialogue but no voice (some important quest do this like the fairy quest to open their beast tribe)
- quest C is when you talk to npc and nothing happen, your screen just stay ingame no transition or anything like that (this one from all the generic sidequest)

quest A is definitely no no with mount, B could be done but sometimes your player will do an animation, mostly the head tilt, surprise face and smile expresion, most still can be done even with mount but still...

C is pretty much mount available since there is nothing happening in the dialogue, no animation nothing, our player just stand still and do nothing

The walking away animations are pretty bad. The only issue for me that springs to mind.

I can forgive them for that but i guess a couple of placeholder items would make it better. It's a shame as FF14 has a great variety of animations. We even get some as patch rewards!

I wish we could change our vertical camera position and let us view directly up. So much to see but can't see it properly.

Nearly all of the cutscenes we have seem to be basically just playing normal /emotes or moving characters from Point A to Point B, sometimes with a prop attached to the connection point in a hand or hands. The exceptions being the Hildibrand quests, which I gather are literally where they experiment with "how can we improve the cutscene engine or do weird things with it".

But a couple of the cutscenes we got in 5.2 content which strongly suggest they've got a new cutscene animation engine, or at least some new features in this one, really excite me to see future stuff. (Specifically the scene in MSQ with pouring some water, and the scene in the Eden raid quests with the suitcases. Both of those made me sit up and take notice, because those are levels of interaction between characters and environment we haven't seen before in cutscenes.)

I agree they're doing new and better things with cutscenes and character animations - between characters as well - though I'm not sure whether it's just unique "standard emotes" with two characters doing essentially independent movements that line up, a bit like our /hug emote where doing it alone makes you awkwardly hug the air but doing the same motion next to another person means you're interacting. They'd just be able to calculate that a lot better for cutscenes and get the characters perfectly in sync. It could just be that they're putting more budget and effort into doing that. It's all just guessing though.
