Please Make Older Minion Mats Available Elsewhere

Over the last two and a half months, I have been on a quest to craft all the craftable minions for myself and my FC mates. While the newer crafted minions require a bit of extreme farming and luck on rolls, that's a time-gate I'm willing to deal with. Instead, it's the older minions that are proving to be an absolute nightmare.

The Atrophied Atomos, Steam-Powered Gobwalker, and especially the Iron Dwarf all have such ridiculous mat requirements that it can take months to be able to craft even one of these minions.

1) Glazenuts. Actually the most reasonable part, but if you aren't able to shell out hundreds of thousands on the MB, get ready to wait at least one real world week's time and gardening effort just to get one mat.

2) The Timeworn Wyvernskin mats, which... never... drop. Myself and two FC mates have been completing Wyvernskin Maps every single day for more than a month now, as well as purchasing extra maps on the MB. Between us and our alts, we've opened over 100 Wyvernskin maps--not a single Atomos Corpulence drop. These maps are now outdated and very few people are doing them, so MB prices are high (typically 40k-50k a map) and prices for the rare drops even higher.

3) Field and Airship venture mats are gated behind 18 hour explorations with RNG rewards. You have no idea when you will get the mats you want; just have to keep mindlessly sending your retainer and air ship out and waiting 18 hours... over and over and over again...

RNG is RNG, I know--but why are minions that haven't been relevant in five years still only accessible via RNG maps/explorations with terrible drop rates? We're now two expansions past the point where these minions were released--it shouldn't still take months to make them, as the maps they are tied up with grow increasingly less relevant and available on the MB.

From someone who is well beyond the point of frustrated with this: Square please make Atomos Corpulence, Exquisite Buttons, Iron Giant Cores, and Iron Giant Scraps available outside of just treasure maps/ventures. Make Atomos Corpulence a rare drop from Atomos in the Crystal Tower raids. I'd go back and do those if given the reason! Make Iron Giant Cores drop from the MSQ Garlean bots. Make Exquisite Buttons purchasable from, say, the Pixie beast tribe--seems like something that would catch their fancy.

Just... please... I can't look at another Wyvernskin map...

Some crafting materials are intended to be rare to make the crafted item more valuable. They're not intended to be crafted for groups of players at one time.

Minions are always relevant. There are always players wanting to add them to their collections, just like you. Therefore there is value in keeping the drops rare.

Make use of world visit to shop for the materials you need. But I would say give up on Atrophied Atomos unless you're willing to spend the gil. The Corpulence has always been extremely rare even compared to other rare materials.

And this is the problem. These are crafted minions, not 1% drops from savage content. After this many years, there's just no need for this item to still be so rare. There are plenty of other rare crafted items that are relevant right now for crafters to make their gil. Making these mats available elsewhere isn't going to hurt any crafter's income or devalue the item--no one is asking for these mats to be free for anyone who wants them, just to make the mats accessible via other routes than outdated treasure maps that no one does anymore. Plenty of other rare minions have had their difficulty decreased over time and have been made accessible via alternate routes (Heaven-on-High for Dwarf Rabbit, etc.).

The difficulty of crafting these early Glazenut minions is rising as time goes by and fewer people do and gather Wyvernskin maps--someone who got it early actually has a less "valuable" minion than one crafted today, which seems like a glaring design flaw to me. The fact that Square didn't repeat this type of crafting requirement for any other crafted minions after this group really says a lot.

It says that while some things get nerfed throughout the lifetime of the game, some rare things remain rare and probably will never change. it's possible things could change if you can get enough attention for the devs to notice you. Wind-up Calofisteri/Scathatch minion drop rates were horrid until enough people complained. There hasn't been mention of it for some time but many people don't have the rare Pod 316 minion from Copied Factory either. will the devs make it a standard drop once the next 24 man nier raid is released in 5.3? and will there be another rare minion to get too?

As for glazenuts - oh you have to wait a week to grow one. such sadness.
Airship/Submarine drops? gotta keep some things rare too.

I am in favour of them doing something about old treasure maps. Like... maybe some kind of way to open them up as level 80 versions. What I don't like about them is the enemies they summon are a pushover, but then in HW and SB, if you get a portal, the dungeon is synced. There is a huge disparity, where the trash isn't fun to fight, but you want many hands available in the event there is a portal. I'd like maybe a way to fight level 80 trash instead, and maybe scale the drop rates up.

Though I think glazenuts themselves are fine. You are supposed to engage with the gardening system to get them, and there should be some kind of market for people who take gardening seriously. It's a little clunky and could use some love, but the general premise is fine. Same with blood peppers, or jute. For what it's worth, we know they are working on... some kind of farm system, so maybe growing them will be more streamlined in the future.

It's not a problem. Crafted minions don't have to be all handed over on a plate. Having a few rare ones gives a collection something to aim for.

A few hundred k for mats is peanuts anyway, you could sell one lv80 3 star craft, or a few bits of furniture, or run Zonureskin maps, or run a hunt train and sell the materia and so on. Gil is basically just there for vanity items anyway, so put it to use. I'm surprised they're so cheap tbh.

haven't they already put some of the older map mats in the scrip vendors?
Steam-Powered Gobwalker isnt very hard to make at all tho since a4/s is a joke unsync and im sure you can get some people to help plus get the mount at the same time

they should just let people Unsync older maps tho

This is what I don't understand--how is asking for another relatively time-consuming way of getting something the same as asking for it to be handed over on a plate? My suggestions were literally to make the items rare drops from raids/dungeons or require you to complete quests to get them, not to make them 10 gil vendor items... This isn't a zero-sum game of going from one extreme (stupid artificial RNG difficulty) to completely free handout...

Also, the gil is definitely not the point. I'm an omni-crafter sitting on more than 100 million gil currently. Me and my FC just thought it would be fun and neat to craft these in-house, grow all the gardening plants and collect the mats ourselves to make them. But after two months of unsuccessfully attempting to do this, it's really put a damper on the fun of trying to craft these minions ourselves. There's "rare minion" and then there's "you might as well give up on this because you'll never be able to craft it except by sheer dumb chance."

There are no other crafted minions like this in the game and it's not like these are exactly super popular well-loved character minions we're talking about here. How many people are using their Atrophied Atomos or Iron Dwarf as a status symbol? There's literally nothing to gain for anyone by keeping this one particular set of minions so difficult to create, when, as you say, there are plenty of other expensive items for people to make their gil from and show off as their fancy rare minion of the week.

i either sell it on mb or give it to a friend. if i can't do either then it gets tossed. 9 times out of 10 someone buys it. plus i will devalue the heck out of it just get it sold if it sits too long on my sale list.

And so now your FC is learning that you can't always get what you want.

What's really sad is you're focusing on those few minions that are hard to obtain by design intent while ignoring all the minions you are able to craft and enjoy together.

lol what? I literally said in my first post that the goal was to craft all the craftable minions for my FC mates. We're already growing the Blood Peppers and Royal Fern Sori and holding weekly farming sessions for primal mats. We have a spreadsheet of mats donated/still outstanding and a color-coded list of who still needs which minion all the way up to the newest craftable minions, Jesus.

We have absolutely no problem dedicating time and effort to getting these minions. The problem is that we have been dedicating months of time and effort and still have nothing to show for that with these older minions because of RNG and outdated content. Once again, because apparently reading is hard, I'm not asking for this to be braindead easy, just stating that mats that are five years old shouldn't still take multiple people--all working toward the same goal--literal months to acquire.

Then why are you here complaining? You evidently do have a problem if a few months of effort is too onerous.

Be thankful you're not trying to farm some of the rewards in other MMOs that were so rare players literally took years to get a single one. There was no way they were going to be able to get multiples for an entire group in just a few months.

The age of the materials is irrelevant. Some items are intended to be hard to get regardless of when they were introduced to the game. Those minions aren't intended to be mass produced for groups.

That is what you continue to fail to understand despite our efforts to explain it to you.

Accept that your FC set an unattainable goal because you did not comprehend the rarity of the items involved. If your FC really want those minions, you're going to have to buy some of the other materials from other players if not the minions themselves.

I fully grasp the rarity of these items, just see absolutely no reason for them to be this rare. There is literally nothing special about this group of minions. They're not popular. They're not even particularly cute in comparison to other minions. They're not based on well-loved characters from the series or adorable real world animals. They don't do anything special that other minions don't do. They're not a status symbol. They're not the mark of a great player of this game. They're not an item that takes extreme skill to achieve. They're rare literally only because of RNG and because Square hasn't had to dip low enough in the barrel yet to reuse them as prizes elsewhere. Rare items should be rare for at least some semblance of a reason, and "We were over-zealous with our mat requirements in one particular expansion" really isn't a good reason. Nor is "some things are just meant to be rare" when the drop rates of essentially everything else in this game get tripled by the time a new expansion comes out--it is literally easier to create relic weapons and earn savage content drops than it is to get one mat for one of these older minions.

What I genuinely don't understand is your personal stake in this. I just spent two months fruitlessly searching for a single mat, so I know my place in this issue. I made the thread because I was sick and tired of doing treasure maps with shit drop rates. But like... why do you care about this topic enough to keep coming back to this thread to try and "educate" me? Is it really going to bother you if Atomos Corpulence becomes a rare drop from Crystal Tower? Is it going to haunt you if Iron Giant Cores start dropping from MSQ? Is it going to keep you up at night if these five-year-old vanity pet items become even slightly less rare? If you're willing to just freely give away mats for these minions, then why do you even remotely care whether or not those mats become slightly less rare? Do you actually have a personal stake in disagreeing with my idea to make the mats more available, or are you just disagreeing to disagree?

Scarcity increases value. Scarcity increases desirability. Scarcity increases content longevity. Not everyone is intended to get everything they want.

The irony here is that the materials you want are available on the market board in decent quantities if you shop across all Crystal worlds. I did a little window shopping on Crystal before I made that post last night. There's enough materials listed at reasonable prices (I ignored the unreasonable) to make 8 Atrophied Atomos and 16-18 Iron Dwarf. There were 10 Atrophied Atomos available with 7 of them between 255k and 560k. I didn't bother checking on the Iron Dwarf because the mats were so cheap.

There's no reason for SE to increase sources and drop rates when what's already available isn't selling all that fast. They want players buying from each other. It helps stimulate market activity (not to mention activates market taxes, which is one of the few reliable gil sinks in the game). If the materials were selling out as soon as they were getting listed, then they might have reason to increase drop rates and sources. That's not happening.

You could take a small fraction of that 100 million gil you're sitting on and buy what you need then spend one week farming gil to regain what you spent instead of spending 2 months trying to get one single material.

But you refuse to do it. You'd rather complain that you can't get what you want on your specific terms despite it being readily available from a different source.

Whatever. Offer stands on the Corpulence unless one of my friends asks for it first.

I was going to reply to this seriously and then I remembered that you ignored my entire question about why you're on this thread in the first place.

Why do you care if these mats become more accessible or not? Are you going to lose gil if these mats became accessible via something other than treasure maps? Would it personally offend you if these mats dropped from literally any other venue in the game? Do you have a valid reason to say this isn't a good idea (and "the mats aren't selling quick on the MB" isn't helping your "the economy is the reason" argument, you know) or do you just respond negatively to every single thread that asks for a drop rate change like a knee-jerk reflex?

I actually did think about taking up your Atomos offer, but to be honest I don't have any desire to meet people who come onto threads they have no personal stake in just to nay-say, so I think I'll pass.

it's not about personal stakes. it's about game design and philosophy. it happens to be inconvenient for you. in other news the sky is blue. some things are the way they are and while you'd like for them to be changed to suit you, it just not gonna happen. i'm not saying it's NEVER going to change for the better, but i've always erred on the more pessimistic side of things.

I'd be more inclined to agree with you if keeping older things rare really was this game's design/philosophy, but it's absolutely not. Keeping something rare is the dead opposite of 99% of this game's design philosophy, and virtually everything in this game that doesn't have a finite "Kill 5000 of X to win" has its difficulty decreased over time. Other crafted minions? Now they drop from deep dungeons. Other treasure map/portal minions? Now they drop from Kupo of Fortune. Hard to get raid minions? Now they're available with Moogle Tomes. Relic weapons? Nerfed. Savage drops? You can farm them unsync'd once the content is out-dated. Rare mounts? Drop rate increased and available by totems when the content gets older.

You guys keep insisting that it's some important function of this game that older items stay rare in order to keep their value, but virtually nothing else in this game has done so, including content that is supposed to take far more player skill to get.

I'm all for rare items that take skill to get staying rare. I would find it fair if savage dropped nothing if you did it unsync'd, for example. But RNG isn't difficulty or skill, and there's no need for one particular set of minions from two expansions ago to be the one thing that for some reason just didn't get nerfed when every other item like them--all of the other older crafted minions--are now available in alternate ways.

Keeping these minions rare is the outlier to FFXIV's design, not the standard.

Then it's an outlier. just because one thing gets nerfed doesn't mean another thing is going to as well.

I got bored enough to come back and reply so... My question wasn't whether you had an opinion but why you have an opinion on a topic that has no bearing on your life. Based on your replies on this thread, you're not especially after these minions yourself, aren't in a hurry to collect them, don't care about selling the mats for a profit, and wouldn't be losing any gil income if these minions suddenly became accessible in other ways. When was the last time you even thought about these minions before I brought them up? There would be no repercussions to you if my idea was accepted; why have an opinion on something that has zero impact on yourself? If these minions were handed out with a 100% drop rate from new trial released tomorrow, would you even remotely care? If you wouldn't complain about that, why complain about my idea to just make the mats rare drops from raids? Why disagree with my idea, which still requires work, for mats that you were willing to hand out completely free?

It has no bearing on your life either, only your game play. It affects my game play and everyone else's as well.

We all have items we wish were easier to get. If SE were to cater to one specific player's request to make rare items easier to get, they would need to cater to every player's request to make their personal desired items easier to get as well.

I've seen what happens to games that start making things easier and easier to get. They start dying as people quit playing. Players lose interest because they get things too easily and so run out of things to do too quickly. There's no rush of adrenaline or sense of accomplishment when that seemingly out of reach item suddenly shows up in inventory and you're "wow, I really managed to get it". Those small frustrations then successes add more to game play value than some think.

The items I wish were less rare or had other options to obtain might be different from yours but I still have them. A very good example is I dislike PvP so I'll never get the housing furnishings, minions or the glamours that come only from PvP. I would love it if SE at least allowed the housing furnishing to be sold on the MB or traded if not given other sources outside of PvP. It would give those players who focus on PvP a source of gil income while negating my need to do PvP to get those items.

I also understand and agree with why SE will iikely never do it. Making PvP the sole source of certain items encourages players go into PvP to get them, increasing the content they have to do. Making PvP a poor source of gil making opportunities in turn forces those who only want to PvP into other content, giving them more things to do as well.

I can accept that. I can't have everything I want on my terms. I'll go without those items, or I'll break down and do PvP if I decide I want them bad enough. There are plenty of other items in the game I can easily get and enjoy. Lacking those items that only come from PvP is a negligible frustration that doesn't disrupt my overall enjoyment of the game.

You have the option of buying the rare materials you need to make those minions from the MB. It's your choice not to do it, just as it's my choice not to PvP.

Understand that if I had seen those materials and minions almost totally absent from the Crystal MBs when I did my window shopping the other night, I would have supported your request to make those specific items less rare. I do believe there is a point where items can be too rare. But there were plenty of materials available to make multiple of those minions along with multiple of the minions themselves. That says supply is where it needs to be and so no changes are needed.

I have a question that is relevant to the topic. Are there any crafted minions besides those based on Primals that were made available from the Accursed Horde? I remember that it was used to make certain rare minions more common and accessible.

But that's what I've been getting at over and over on this thread--I totally agree that there are certain items that should stay rare, and those are items that take skill to get. It makes perfect sense that PvP items stay PvP-only because it takes at least some measure of talent (or at least enough talented teammates to carry you) to accrue enough wins to receive those awards. Their rarity is directly correlated to the amount of skill and effort a person puts into the game and the content.

Treasure map drops do not work that way. They are completely random. Someone could open three maps and get three Atomos Corpulence, while three of my FC mates and I could continue opening maps for months upon months and not get what is needed to craft even one of these minions as they were intended to be craftable. Their difficulty is entirely based on RNG, and what drop rates are attached to that RNG are entirely arbitrary, based on Square's current choices, not player skill or effort. Furthermore, over time, as these particular brand of treasure maps get older, fewer and fewer people collect them and fewer and fewer people open them, meaning the rarity of the items increases over time from the originally intended level of rarity.

I fully agree that having rare items in the game establishes a sense of accomplishment--but you don't feel accomplished unless you've done something worth feeling accomplished about. A PvP win? Accomplishment. An RNG-based treasure map drop? Not an accomplishment, just a relief.

You continue to mention that keeping rare mats rare encourages people to do older content, but the high prices of Wyvernskin Maps and the rarity of the mats themselves--rare enough that you told me to just give up in your first post and there are currently a total of four people on our entire server selling Atomos Corpulence--shows that this isn't true. Except for a few extremely motivated individuals, items with abysmal drop rates generally discourage players from attempting to farm that content. Look at primal mounts and relics--the rate of people who farm the mounts increases when the mount drop rate goes up because there's greater promise of reward; more people are likely to restart the relic weapon questline once difficulty has been decreased. How do we lure people back into old content? Better rewards. Humans are just naturally reward-motivated--would you work for even 30 minutes a day if your boss told you you only had a 1% chance of being paid?

The idea that "people will leave if there aren't rare items" would probably hold true if the game wasn't consistently adding new rare items. There are new, difficult-to-get minions in virtually every patch. There are tons of new long-term challenges to players being added all the time; the new Ishgard crafting and gathering minions and mounts come to mind, for example, and because they're tied to finite "Score X to receive mount," they will almost certainly never be nerfed. There is plenty enough challenge and content in this game to keep people playing. A set of crafted minions from five years ago is absolutely meaningless in terms of keeping current players engaged and subscribed--can you name a single person who is still playing FFXIV solely because they haven't been able to get an Atrophied Atomos yet?

No? That's not how this works in the slightest? If a DJ takes one song request, does he have to take all other song requests too? When people asked for nerfs to the relic questline, Square didn't suddenly go "Well, we nerfed relic so I guess that means we have to remove the weekly tomestone cap too!" This isn't a zero-sum game. Choosing to accept one person's feedback is not remotely a commitment to accept other requests.

But, as I've pointed out again and again, the crisis you seem to imply is going to occur if these minions became more accessible has already happened. Virtually every other old hard-to-get item in the game has already been nerfed. I've pointed this out repeatedly: savage drops, nerfed. Relic, nerfed. Mounts, nerfed. Other crafted minions, nerfed. Rare glamour gear, nerfed. Please explain to me how, compared to all of these other rare items--many of which actually took skill to originally get--making three or four minions from two expansions ago a tiny bit more accessible is going to affect your game play in any way, shape, or form. I genuinely want to know--are you or anyone else you play with going to suddenly quit because you got these particular minions?

As I mentioned in another reply, this game's design philosophy is literally to make rare items easier to get over time. That's the norm. That's Square's method of doing things and has been since ARR. If you don't like that design philosophy, that's one thing, but can we please not act like an eighth umbral calamity is going to occur and all of FFXIV will die if we make a handful of old minions that virtually no one uses or cares about just slightly less rare?

There actually aren't that many crafted minions in the game. After they started introducing primal minions, primals became pretty much the sole craftable minions. Since Heavensward, there are only been four non-primal craftable minions introduced: Wind-Up Chimera (does not require any especially rare drops), Wind-Up Sadu and Magnai (all mats purchasable from vendors except Royal Ferns from gardening), and Private Moai (requires a mat from submersible voyages).

Almost all primal minions up to Lakshmi and Susano have been added as rewards from Accursed Hoard. Several other previously rare minions that weren't craftable, such as Dwarf Rabbit (originally a treasure map reward), have also been added to Accursed Hoard to make them less rare.

All other crafted minions require mats that can be dropped from normal enemies or purchased from a vendor.

The outliers I was mentioning here (Atrophied Atomos, Iron Dwarf, and Steam-Powered Gobwalker) are the only craftable minions in the game that are not accessible in any other way and the only ones that require treasure map drops.
