Ocean Fishing mount frustration

From RNG to get a chance for spectrals to having to rely on teammates using the correct bait to even get them and also hoping they get a certain amount of fish so we can get the bonus at the end to having a full group of people who are leveling up who are an extreme high chances of having no idea what they're doing this is by far the most unfun and frustrating thing I have done in this game. I can now see why people leave if their isn't a spectral in the first round. Their needs to be some changes to this mode spectral rounds need improve chances higher tier fish need to spawn during spectral instead of the worthless "!" fish. Being at the mercy of rng and teammates using correct baits and hoping their rng is good is awful design. Ocean fishing is literally a casino in which to get the mega jackpot you need yourself to get the jackpot and the other people to also get the jackpot to even get a chance at the mega jackpot. Once I obtain this mount I will never step foot in ocean fishing again lmao.

I've done big fishing it doesn't require 23 other people to do the right thing. Big fishing is no where near as bad as this.

I've done this with 6 other people (forced entry after 15min elapsed) and still seen 3 rainbows and acquired the mount in that very same instance. It really is just RNG at best.

Apparently assuming this information is correct the fewer the amount of people that start the ocean fishing the higher the chance of getting a spectral round is to compensate incase it becomes dead content. So it is actually better to go in with fewer people who know what they're doing.

oh yes it is, and it's much worse actually, you just got lucky and caught maybe one of the easy big fishes just like some people got their mount on the first fishing trip.

I disagree I think ocean fishing is much more frustrating you may not and that's fine but when I personally weigh everything I personally think ocean fishing is more frustrating just having to rely on other people alone is a massive hassle. If I could queue by myself or with a group of like 6-7 as spectral chances increase then yes ide consider big fishing to be harder/more frustrating. I wouldn't instantly assume someone got lucky with one "easy big fish" that's just silly to even assume.

The sheer amount of RNG can be a bit frustrating, I'm in the same situation (still trying, though!)

After hours and hours of attempts I finally managed to obtain it this was by far the most frustrating and unfun thing I managed to do in a long while.

I think I just got lucky with this. I hadn't touched Fsh prior to this. Powerleveled it to 80, did the 65 quest, and once i got Double hook, i did one ocean voyage, got the mount and haven't touched it since :/. Sounds like you did something to piss off Rngesus lol

Welcome all of you new to fishing. Pretty easy to tell who you are because if you've done any big fishing previous to ocean fishing you will be all too accustomed to the pain. There is no bigger game with RNG in this game than fishing.

A couple things I will point out:

This content is meant to last a while. The RNG factor is a big part of its longevity. Even if you get the minion, mount, and title; completionists will be at this for years. Yes. Years. I got an intuition buff after pulling up some greens during a rainbow phase. That means there's a damn fish in there you can only get during this time; after getting a buff from fish that also only appear during the phase. Accept this fact right now. Not everyone who participates in this content will get their shark mount and title.

A party is only going to help. You can be the only one of the eight who knows anything. You'll be there with all your technique, and optimal rotation to no avail. And lv8 bum chum billy over yonder without a clue pulls up two rainbows in a row. It happens like that, and that's how this game works. If you can get in a party, do so. If not, go solo. Your luck can swing in either direction no matter which you choose.

It sounds like fishing just isn't for you. Nobody is saying you have to like it, but to call it bad design is a bad take, imo. Tedious and frustrating? Absolutely. Bad design? Not exactly.

You think this is frustrating, unfun and too much for just a mount, the Ishgardian restoration would like to have a word...

its not bad design it s typical paid sub design because people who are "completionists" will endure. Its not surprising they put RNG in all MMOs if they gave you everything youll do exactly as op said and never touch the content again making it difficult for new players to do it. Same old argument has been done to death. Look I get frustrated with RNG like anyone else but its apart of ever mmo ive played.

If its this unbearable for OP maybe try something else or stop playing MMO s for awhile give a different genre a chance.

I guess I must explain fully why in my opinion this is bad design but first I have gotten the mount already I got it last night. I had created a group of people who wanted to get the mount and we had tried 2 runs prior and had dud runs at the start so we decided to wait last min so we can get the bare minimum people which increases the odds of spectral rounds to start. The group was 16 people, from what I could see nobody was a low level everyone was a general high enough level to know what to do and use the correct baits. This was the only content that was unbearable and it was my choice to keep continuing because I wanted the mount as I already put so much effort into it already. I don't plan on stopping myself playing the game even if I didnt get it this was something I dedicated myself to get i'm not a completionist but I simply wanted the mount anyways.

I understand why their is rng to this it's an mmo to keep players subbed so they can get more money it's an obvious tactic however the sheer amount of rng needed for the mount for ocean fishing or the title itself is just insanity. Yes fishing in general has an rng factor however that is just your rng thats all you take into account yourself.The boat if you're going for the mount or title you need to hope that A.) The 23 others are aiming for spectral fish and not using generic lures (i swear most low levels do this) B.) Hope that ether you or them can trigger a spectral C.) Hope they catch enough during the boat trip itself to gain you the extra bonuses at the end. Those are just three factors with just the people that isn't including the normal fishing rng of getting high tier fish HQ double hooks etc. Relying on others is what made this unnecessarily difficult because most people going into ocean fishing are leveling their fisher and don't use the proper bait. Now that isn't their fault the game doesn't tell you what to use and you can only do so much when saying what bait to use during the opening of each round assuming they actually pay attention.

What I think ocean fishing needs is ether A.) Buffs to frequency of spectral fish and spectral rounds. OR B.) Allow people to undersize themselves so they can just go with the people they want to go with it increases spectral odds and you have like minded people who know what they're doing same with people trying to get the titles. I like B better if i'm being honest but of course this is SE so anything they do if anything is change it so people can't leave and re queue again.

It took me 4 days, each day with at least 5 runs per day to get the mount. The party I ended up getting the mount on was in PF, doing the “shark challenge”. The party basically just did w/e he said, and we all got a mount, including the lvl 60 there. I ended up with 13k in the end (had 80% bonus) and I think it really is a lot more team orientated than it seems.

If there is a player there trying to close out a log, they may not want the spectral effect at all and will deliberately use the wrong bait in an attempt to avoid it.

Last is being in a party does not increase the odds of the spectral effect. The only thing that does this is the number of lines being cast all using the same bait. Even this is up for debate because I have caught the fish required to trigger the effect using bait other than what has been recommended. Due to the heaviness of the RNG factor of this content and fishing in general, I am honestly going to say that what truly increases the odds are simply the number of casts within the time frame. I would avoid highly coordinated efforts, and instead instruct your party members to not do things like /sit, throw fish back, desynth, repair, or anything that cuts into the number of cast times during the trip.

The leave and queue again is going to get fixed. Don't worry about that. Those of you who are doing this; I wouldn't get used to it, and enjoy it while it lasts.

Unfortunately Yoshida has said* that he likes RNG and the feeling of finally getting it. So when he wants to give us fun and engaging content... well. :(

Yeah I'm just not even bothering with this. At least with Big Fishing it only depends on you and your own planning and abilities. But fishing is the red headed stepchild of the gathering professions. I have multiple fishers at 80 and still think the RNG is very bad design, especially in comparison to the other two, and they don't make the rewards anywhere near worth the effort.

I've always enjoyed fishing I don't mind fishing for big tier fish or average fish. Fishing in itself is nice and relaxing. I'm not a super big fisher but I enjoy it and get the higher tier fish for gil is always nice. Getting the higher tier fish can be a pain with the windows yes but at the same time i'm only relying on my rng and my skill. The biggest reason I disliked ocean fishing so much is because it is required to rely on other people in a already huge rng style class.

I hear ya. This does not require other people though. Last night I almost got the mount solo. I missed the 10k mark by 60 points. Favorable RNG with x3 current changes, and plenty of '!!' during those phases; plus efficient double hook use got me plenty of points and the 80% bonus. One or two more catches would have took care of it. It takes only one person, and one catch to trigger the effect. And with really favorable RNG, I have no doubt a solo player can also get the 'chievo. The other 23 players on the boat only help the chances of triggering the rainbows. Literally nothing they do can hurt those chances. Only reduce the number of them.

A lot of theorycrafting has gone in to indicate spectral currents spawn more often with less players. A way of sorta futureproofing the content for people that have missed the boat.
While extra players would always help catch more spectral fish, the change to proc a spectral current on each bite goes down.

While not concrete yet, it seems to be somewhat verifiable. Also a plausible way to keep the boat interesting when alone.
