I just came back to the game after a long break. I unlocked the RDM job and decided to buy the level boost to 70. I have heard players hate people who do this because they don't know how to play the job. That's why I'm posting here. I'm hoping people can give me pointers. I don't want to go in blind and suck. Any help would be welcomed. Thank you.

People do hate this for a reason, me including.
You can't expect to buy just 70 levels, have absolutely no experience with it, the skills and the overall gameplay mechanic and how they are eficiently used n played out and expect from this to be immediately able to play the job like the most talented pro player.
Experienced longtime players get quickly an eye for level booster noobs that are just too lazy to play the game right and get to learn their job they play from scratch on to learn how to play effectively thei skill rotations, which is the most obvious thing people recognize, especially from DPS, when the damage of the group sucks, due to booster noobs in the group constantly failing at doing their skill rotations right, or because of using many or certain skills not, because of being clueless what the skill does, or when/ at which moment you should which skill, resulting in thesd kind of players obviosly dieing also more oftenly from their made mistakes or from being unable to use the right skills at the right moment.
Often you reconize such players also by being too stupid/unable to use Limit Attacks, because they rushed witgh thesec brainless boosters into the game, without even knowing at all the game's tiniest BASICS.
This is why booster noobs are disliked and have that bad reputation.
So the only advice I can give you, If you don't want to go in blind and suck ( what you most likely would end up doing) is - say no to boosters, take yourself the time to Level RDM from 50 to 80 while playing the class normally through its job quests and you will get the understanding of playing this job to suck not witg it.
You do yourself only a favor with that, as others as well too ;)
Boosters are good/senseful only for experienced players with Alt Accounts, which want just to save themself some time, so that they don't have to go through all the stuff of the game again, that they already know from playing the job the first time on the Main Account. -

Set up your hot bars appropriately. Practice on a dummy, in potd, hoh, and other low level dungeons. You can also look up written guides or visual/audio guides on youtube. The forums might also have some how-to-job guide resources available so you can also try to make use of the search function.Quote:

The basics of Red Mage is simple. After each hardcasted spell, your next spell would be instant under the effect of Dualcast. As such, you always want to pair a short cast with a long cast.
The shortcasts are Jolt, Verstone, and Verfire, and they all have a 2 seconds cast time. The latter two have a chance of being generated by the long casts, Veraero and Verthunder, which all have a 5 seconds cast time. The spells build up white mana and black mana at different amounts. If your manas are imbalanced by more than 30, the mana generation would be halved. When you have 80|80 mana, you can spend them on series of pwerful attacks (your melee combo) which are in melee range.
Then you have some ogcds, which serve as additional damage. Make sure you use them on cooldown.
There are also aoe version of the spells. Veraero II and Verthunder II as your shortcasts, and Scatter (later Impact) as your long cast. The principle behind the rotation remains the same. Instead of the melee combo, you spend your mana on an aoe version of the melee attack.

Of all the jobs to boost, RDM has the least impactful (heh) consequences on how well someone plays taking just job learning into consideration. The rotation at 50 is essentially identical to the one at 70, and heck even at 80, so there's very little learning needed above what you already would have had to learn at 50. E.g. most Jobs need to learn different rotations at different levels, or at least have some significant mechanic added to the mix partway through levelling. BLM is a very good example of this, and requires learning multiple rotations for all the various DF level syncs. Technically, RDM does have some minor differences at lower levels, for example, different balance levels needed for the melee combo. But since the job starts at 50 everyone has to learn these differences from the same starting point regardless if they have the boost or not so the boost doesn't make a difference.

One thing I would suggest is to go to the Palace of the Dead and do it solo. RDM is very well equipped to deal with everything PotD can throw at you so it's not nearly as annoying as it can be with other classes. RDM also does fairly well with PotD in that your growth from level 1 through level 50ish is pretty well presented. You'll actually get to experience the class growth from start (or, actually, before it's hard coded start point) to level 50+ by just playing through to level 40 or so in PotD by yourself without worrying about holding a group back or letting anyone else down, and you can learn how it all feels hands on rather than just in a text description or in a video. It only takes a couple hours at most. RDM, to me at least, is a very tactile class that has a great flow to it that you can only really get into by playing it.
The only thing you won't really get much experience with in PotD is AoE play but that aspect of RDM is simple and obvious, especially once you understand how the single target works.
Kudos for wanting to be a RDM and for caring about actually learning the job! Don't let the Skip Pot haters let you down! -

People think they can learn it all on the fly, but that is absolutely not the case. There are nuances to be learned. Half the time people don't even take a cursory look at the tooltips. BLMs are the worst offenders because they don't figure out how Enochian works.Quote:

Boosting isn't a problem. Just read your skills and practice on a training dummy and you should be able to figure out a basic rotation. If you're in the novice network, you can also ask an experienced RDM for additional help.
The basic idea of RDM is to increase your Black and White magic evenly to spend on powerful melee attacks. RDM spells also grant the dualcast buff which lets you a follow up spell instantly. Use this to get around RDM's longer casting spells. As a starting point practice building your white/black mana to 80/80, which is what you need to begin your enchanted melee combo:
Build mana with spells > Reach at least 80 in both black and white mana > Corps-a-corps gap closer to enter melee range > Enchanted Riposte > Enchanted Zwerchhau > Enchanted Redoublement > Displacement will push you out of melee range > start over
AoE is similar, but replace the Enchanted combo with Enchanted Moulinet.
The rotation I outlined above doesn't include everything (most importantly Manafication and Verflare/Verholy) but it's the core of RDM's playstyle and should provide some context to keep in mind when figuring out how to use skills. -

yeah „simply“ understand the terms ABC, PreCast, SlideCast, Weaving & the use of not only selfbuffs but buffalignments & worst-case utility (when to red or even heal)... those things u can’t buy with a booster potion or master by reading the tool tips.
The basics are way more important than any tooltip or rotation u blindly copy but don’t understand in the first place. It’s like Kaiserdrache already said there is no shortcut for exp... no matter what u try. -

Here are a few pointers:
1) NEVER, EVER, HARDCAST YOUR LONGCAST SPELLS: Verthunder, Veraero, Scatter (becomes Impact @ lv. 66), and Verraise. Always use your Dualcast trait for these.
1a) there is an exception to this rule: If you ever enter a fight and the tank gives you a countdown (preferably 10 seconds or more) pop Acceleration at about 8 seconds. THE MOMENT you see the giant 5 for the countdown appear start hardcasting either Verthunder or Veraero then follow up with the other one. this will give you an instant "double proc". (See point 5 for double proc)
2) Take note that your shortcast spells: Jolt, Verfire, Verston, Vercure, Verthunder II (AOE), and Veraero II (AOE) all have a base cast time of 2.00 seconds. This means you only have to spend roughly 40% of your time in one place depending on how much your personal latency allows you to move around. Use this free time to reposition as needed.
3a) Embolden is weird in that it boosts YOUR magic attack and party members Physical Attack. Pay attention to your party makeup, especially if you have a basic understanding how the other classes play, to get the most of it.
3b) Manafication doubles your mana bars seperately, be careful their descrepancy is not too bad. If one is 16 points lower it will be 32 lower after manafication and, therefore, put you in an imbalance. Manafication mid sword combo WILL CANCEL the combo.
3c) Take note the timers on Embolden and Manafication are 120 seconds and 110 seconds respectively. This allows you some wiggle room to keep both buffs on similar cooldowns.
4) If acceleration comes off cooldown while I am mid-combo I prefer to use it 2 GCDs before my combo ends so it comes back up in my normal casting rotation faster while at the same time it wont fall off after getting the 3rd stack of it off. If you are working on your mana bars POP ACCELERATION OP COOLDOWN.
5) It is possible to get what RDM's call the "double proc". This is where BOTH Verfire and Verstone are ready to be casted as the same time. It usually happens due to the combo finisher activating the inactive one proc. Don't panic when this happens, just cast the one that is Lower then cast the element's longcast spell (i.e.: If you have the White magic bar lower cast Verstone -> Veraero. If you have the Black magic bar lower cast Verfire -> Verthunder)
6a) Corp-a-corps is not just for starting the melee combo, it does damage so use it on cooldown.
6b) Displacement is not just for starting the melee combo, it does damage so use it on cooldown.
6c) If using displacement will kill you then use Engagement (which we get at level 72). It shares the cooldown and has 50 less potency but you wont jump back to your death.
7) At Lv. 76 we get Reprise (which itself is a weak and useless melee ranges weaponskill). For the cost of 5 Black and 5 White mana it becomes a 300 potency ranged weaponskill. If you have 90/90 or better and have to wait a second to go in for your combo due to mechanics (i.e.: an AOE around the boss, tecker AOE's on the party members, or some other mechanic) pop a couple of these off until it is safe to go in or you can cast a few spell without capping the bar.
8a) Use Swiftcast whenever you can, AND CAST A LONGCAST spell with it.
8b) I like to use Lucid Dreaming whenever I have 7500 or less MP.
I hope these pointers are useful. Have fun with RDM and remember you are not the "Rez Dispenser" you are a DPS job. -

I remember taking it up in Stormblood, but because so much time had passed since I had played, I literally started a new character on another server and took it up from the ranks from scratch again just to see the changes first hand. -

1. It’s obvious to use raise after dual cast proc like others use swift.
2. You STILL don’t get that heal & raise on Rdm are JUST worst, worst, woooorst case scenarios which you should avoid as long as possible. (Using them to generate a dual cast in downtimes is another case but surely not „the most important one“)
Actually i start believing you just don’t want to improve or learn anything... that are pure BASICS on your cls... -

(though the case can be made they are superior to all other jobs in their ability to Raise the entire party should it fall due to what I just said)

Vercure is not in your kit to make you a 'secondary healer.' Its got 350 potency per gcd; this is less than Physick. It's fine for emergencies (both healers are down and you're trying to recover) but it's real use is priming Dualcast during boss downtime. -

I simply do not and have never spent the majority of my time DPSing in a Raid. I'm doing one of three things, my time is divided between DPSing, Healing, and Raising.
So I cannot put much stock in FFlogs when it comes to measuring DPS from a RDM.

Just last weekend I was in Copied Factory and the moment I zoned in I see both healers in our team in cutscene. So you can imagine how that went, they were first time ever in Copied Factory rank newbies.
You expect it to happen because they're new, but they died and died and died and died... and then died a few more times for good measure. Luckily for them the team composition was 2 Bards and 3 Red mages. I ended up with two full party saves in that one, and I know one of the other Red Mages did too because I went down once, looked up and saw both healers down and the only one left was a Red Mage who got us all back up.
First part of the Serial Jointed Command Module went ok, then I suddenly look up, and both healers are down, so are all the Bards and Red Mages and I'm going what the hell happened? The only people left standing are me and the Tank?
I had already Verraised the Healers once prior when they went down. So I raised the Healers again with dual casted Verraise and one RDM. kicked in Lucid Dreaming and popped a Super Ether, then picked up a Bard and another RDM. In hind sight I should probably have picked up the Bard before the RDM so we could get the MP quickly but I had to do it quick.
Happened again at 9S. But this time the only one standing besides me was a Bard.
The team Red Mages were busy that day I can tell you. As a Red Mage you are the only one standing between success and making it through vs a team wipe. And I also run into this a lot in the Vauthrie 8 man and the Hades 8 Man. -

I'd have to disagree Stormcaster with your second point,
I've actually seen it in normal alliance raids that they will get really torqued off at you if you're the RDM and the last man standing and doing nothing to raise people. It does cheeze them off and it can start fights and threaten vote kicks and it applies to dungeons too. And I've also been there when one team wipes or keeps wiping during the raid that the shouts will go up in chats saying Team B will you stop wiping all the time. So it does become a factor.
But I do agree with your general point though.
You don't WANT it that way as an RDM because it means crap went sideways and that's never good.
But unfortunately you will have to do it from time to time if you're doing PUGs. -

There is no shame in buying a job or story boost potion, if you are willing to pay the irl money for those then I fully support em, I even bought one for my alt when I created it back in SB, bought job boost for warrior and story skip to SB.
I'm not on the game right now so it'd be hard to give advice without the material in front of me to look at , that's just how my mind works, but right off hand I'd say go to the role actions and get swift cast, plus if you have the mp then make sure u raise people so healers can save their mp. -

read a guide for lv 50, 60 70 and lv 80 rotas (for single target and aoe rotas).., keep practicing especially the lv70 and lv 80 rotas, till they are fully imbeded in your "muscle memory"..
after that start to do harder content with rdm.. (and don't be afraid to rez players, even if it means u lose dps.., it's almost expected from Rdm's)
