On one hand, it'll be bringing more players to the game. On the other...it'll inevitably mean more work to ensure that each new content patch is up to scratch and ready to release on an additional platform. Hopefully we won't be bound by any further limitations to the point where we cannot see an update to the character customisation system, for example.
My main concern is that the development team are already stretched thin and the additional legal work and testing will put an even heavier burden atop their shoulders.
Link pls?
This will be both a blessing and a curse XD
on the one hand more players yay \o/
on the other hand console wars are a thing still (despite it being completely stupid) :/
I wasn't sure if this was a troll thread until I did a search on it. It does seem legit.

Alright! Now they can double their "console excuses" quota!
Xbox one limitations, please look forward to it.
Really though, we have ps5 already announced and Xbox will probably follow suit, why release the game on a dying console that is just inevitably gonna hold the game back? Just wait and release it on the next gen console.
Scarlet only or Xbox One X too?
While it does state that they plan to bring FFXI and FFXIV to the X-Box if you read the article it says that they plan to do so at a later date and not with the ones releasing in 2020. So while it's in the works this could be anywhere from 2021 to several years down the road.
It's a good thing for FFXIV to be in more consoles other than PC and PS4.
It really does make the game more accessible if its on practically all platforms.
If it brings in more new players who had been wanting to try that game that is great news.
While adding xbox please remove the artificial limitations placed on PC players. Namely Steam and Non-Steam clients. At least allow us Steam players the ability to purchase non-Steam licenses and apply them to our accounts. There should be zero reasons to not allow this in 2019.
There should be an option on the Mogstation to allow people to convert off Steam to non-steam permanently while retaining all previous account details.
Even if it meant never being allowed to link that same account back to Steam again, a lot of players would utilise it.
PS4 doesn't require you to buy PS+ to play FFXIV. I would imagine part of the bargain to get FFXIV on xbox would be to not require Gold for the game. Or at least I would hope so if you want to avoid console comparison wars.
I would utilize it for sure. Though i'm not going to hold my breath they let us convert for free. The only time I think they've let people convert for free was when they discontinued the PS3.
Hopefully Xbox doesn't bring more limitations
Wonder if Switch will be included in the future? He never said a direct no to FFXIV going to Switch
It's going to be about another 12 months before the new consoles launch. As with any new hardware, there will be some bugs to iron out in the first 6 months and people will typically wait to see what exclusives that Sony and Microsoft have. Also, even with a good lead in, the demand will be well above supply, as seen with the Switches launch and famously, the Wii.
From what I have read about the consoles, is that their hardware is almost identical, which should really aid "SE" in streamlining the two consoles updates. Another thing I remember coming across is that from . a programming point of view, the new consoles are now an evolution from the previous generation,as they are using a more "standard" architecture, which makes it easy to write code for. Finally, both consoles will have full backwards compatibility, so as long as they have an XBone version, they will cover both consoles as the XBone is phased out.
*Stays silent on semi-toaster that has less frames than a PS4*
Ok, so The Verge article doesn't mention One or One X specifically for FFXIV, and assuming Project Scarlett will be rebranded as an Xbox console on release, this would be the logical exclusive target (skipping One and One X). At least, that's my hope.
I mean to actually enhance the game at this point it will require substantial redesigns to the graphics engine, low end Xbox Ones won’t limit the game more then low end PCs running it. For them to actually drastically enhance the game they would have to raise the min PC specs up by a ton.
Considering Square-Enix hasn't said anything at all about it and the news is one-sided, I'll believe the news when Yoshi confirms it.
There is nothing about the PS4 holding this game back. The console barely makes a sound compared to more modern games. The only thing holding this game back is the graphics engine it is running on and the noodle code. Both of which can't be replaced without writing the whole game code from scratch.
Yay another console to hold the game back and another reason to not add official add-on support on PC cause "it'll be unfair". (I'm not even gonna mention further casualisation, of what ever non-braindead content we got left.)
On the bright side at least with the influx of NA/EU players SE might finally notice that they got customers/players outside of JP.
To anyone legit complaining about xbox one limitations or something stupid like that, the xbox one is way way stronger than the minimum PC specs, if youre gonna complain about anyone is should be people playing on their toasters. Also I believe the scarlett is backwards compatible to the Xbone, so there isn't any concern about releasing it on a "dying console"
Unlike PCs, which are custom-built, consoles have a fixed specification. While PC users can be told to upgrade part(s), a console is fixed in that matter and thus always the weakest in the link. Also, I do not think the engine need to be "substantially redesigned" at all. GW2's engine, despite being crap because it is from 2005 and utilizing only 2 cores, brought up very nice graphics. Many deemed "old" graphic engines could pull off great shaders and particle effects. One of the best examples is the great GTAV PC port, which uses the same RAGE engine the consoles used.
We PC players are just so being held back by poor hardware (consoles) that we forgot how well-performing engines can be. Either it's a crappy port which is similar to a bad emulation or bad target hardware to begin with. Tomb Raider I - III were designed on the PlayStation and suddenly, when IV (The Last Revelation) came out, the PlayStation was a port and Windows the native platform. Boy, the game took a big leap despite using the same engine!
This isn't true, the biggest limiting factor is designing a game that they say can run at the minimum specs that they listed. As long as a console has better specs than what the devs consider the minimum or even reccomended they are not the thing holding the game back, especially as console architecture is so similar to PC nowadays
They'll likely continue to support lower spec PC's because not everyone will be playing on a higher spec PC, PS4 and XBox One are able to include more detail than the lowest settings provide, so honestly I don't see console limitations being an issue.
PS3 provided limitations on how big they could make areas as the PS3 only had 512mb ram, no other limitations as I understand it were reported.
In FFXI console limitations were a thing because the game engine was built around the PS2's hardware and optimised to that configuration and the PC version was a port of the console versions and there was the limitation of the HDD space on a PS2 HDD. but even now as the PS2 is no longer supported the game suffers from PS2 limitations, as a result if they wanted to bypass them they'd have to pretty much rewrite the engine (as its probably too much like spaghetti to rework the existing one) , which I understand is what they are doing with Final Fantasy XI R2
I have serious concerns. Microsoft likes to get something out of it all. I worry that in order to bring the game to the Xbox, SE concedes and pulls some sort of exclusivity deal for the 6.0 expansion making it exclusive to Xbox and PC for six months to a year and leaves the Playstation community in the dust.
Don't think that is too far-fetched. Microsoft is known for pulling these shenanigans and the reason the game hasn't come to the platform sooner is due to their lists of rules and demands.
As a Playstation player, I would be mighty ticked if I was content locked just so they could bring the game to a new platform.
They will NEVER give in to you PC elitists. If you think they are going to drop console support just so you can have prettier graphics and performance you've lost your mind. This game will always be on console. And with PS5 being backwards compatible there will be no reason to create an updated graphics engine for the game since it can co-exist across both PS4 and PS5. Many of us love playing on our consoles. I enjoy sitting on my couch and playing on my 65 inch 4K and not hunched over some computer screen.
Yoshi P and SE would never go for that, FFXIV and PlayStation makes too much money for that. I wouldn’t worry too much this is Xbox under Phil Spencer he’s much more willing to play ball with other companies than people at Microsoft/Xbox were in the past.
Also Microsoft did get something every FF game on Xbox currently is coming to Game Pass and Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 as well as 2.8 are coming to Xbox, it’s a brave new era.
Best SE move they could have ever did.
Like for it to happen and actually happen is different though.
They have met like 4 times, and every single one of those meetings MS had never budged about wanting separate servers..
So i agree with the person you quoted, i will believe it when SE themselves announce it
And like I said in the response above, there is no indication yet that it said otherwise.
I have been following it all from various game sources and none of those interviews thus far I have heard otherwise about MS still wanting their own servers. Perhaps Phil finally is not stubborn anymore? We will see I guess
