Please show overheal in flying text

I wish the game told you how much you overhealed. it could be something really simple, such as just adding a (X% overheal) below the flying text like the game already does for parry

im really sick and tired of seeing healers cast completely useless heals all the time. healing the tank when theyre at like 90% hp, medica 2 when the party barely takes any damage. the list goes on. i know its mostly new healers doing it, and i understand that, but i think healers of all skill levels would vastly improve if they saw just how much their heals are acutally healing and how much goes to waste.

I'm not exactly a 'new healer' but I tend to especially over heal on WHM when using the blue lillies, so I can get that blood lily faster.

A bit overheal(~25%, depends on fight) is unavoidable, it would send the wrong message. Sometimes a cure III is less time wasted, when e.g. 3 people are low, or are you gonna waste extra gcd and deal less dmg to avoid overheal on five others? No.

i know Some overheal is expected especially if you use aoe heals to heal a single target, but youre missing the forest for the trees. everyone benefits from seeing how effective healing is, especially a new healer whos just spamming cure on a nearly full health tank

Allow me to paraphrase the OP:
"I wish all the healers could be as good at healing as me when I don't play a healer"

Showing the overheal won't stop most newer healers. Most really new/casual healers don't care about overheal, or even think it's a bad thing, a lot will even just stand there and actively do nothing if they don't need to heal.

How bad can it be if there is overheal? Is this somekind of practice tools?Let them be at peace with their paranoia.

I fail to understand becoz i rarely see this except in raids or trials when there are 2 healers. New healers mostly just stand there doing nothing if none to heal
Some healer just don't care or don't know, never play healer in other games where agro management meant everything in dungeon, how i miss this element in ffxiv dungeons... The fear of overheal

With simplified mechanics for tanks to control agro, I don't see this can be a huge problem anymore. We also lost our enmity reduce kit becoz its not needed anymore. So this tools have lost its significance
Except it affect the healer mana management and dps output

For me i heal base on health percentage, choose which spell base on it
Crit heal will always have some extent of overheal, can't really control it
I always excog tank before pulls, sometimes it pops on timer end, cant be help but it one of the way that i use to fill faerie gauge
For now its a waste of resource for dev to address this, let them fix other healer issues

thats kind of what im getting at. you cant fix the former but letting people know would fix the latter. im sure the learning curve would be faster if people just had a little bit more knowledge. eventually good healers realize they can push hp harder than healing the tank at near full health, but im sure if someone just saw "80% overheal" next to every cure ii they cast theyd sooner realize they can spend their mp doing better things

I get what you are saying but there are plenty of times when I 'pre-heal' with HoT skills so I can have a safety net for DPSing. Like if you see me apply Medica 2, Regen and Asylum I am about to Holy Spam until Thin Air is done. Is it wasteful? Probably. Do I care? Not really. I like keeping the party topped up so I can have those windows of DPS and people complaining about overheals is not something I want to have to deal with. Especially with healing being the chore that it is now.

I'd prefer overheals to a 'green dps.' Just saying.

I was paired with a white mage in The Praetorium when I was on Scholar. I tossed out maybe one heal the entire run not counting Eos using Embrace for 18% overheal. The white mage did nothing but heal and had an 89% overheal at the end. I have never seen an overheal number that high before. I doubt they would have changed their playstyle if they could see overheal numbers on the fly, however. What I wouldn't mind is a post-fight summary that showed your own DPS and overheal stats.

I guess the idea is that for the handful of people it would help, there would be even more people who would ignore it and not care, therefore making it a waste of resources for the developers.

I think this would only discourage newer healers if they saw a notification saying "Over healed by % or any number" People will improve the more they play, and the more they play the more comfortable they will be with their class. It's how I improved on being a better Astrologian.

Playing Casual, Overheal is usually no big deal, especially since Aggro-Management got so easy for the Tanks. Healer can't rip it off that easily anymore and most Healers usually won't run out of MP anyway. So when I play Healer I really don't care that much if I overheal or not, as it's a mess in PUG anyway.
PLD spamming Clemancy? 8 Man Content with a random second Healer? Those Overheal-Numbers will be all over the place anyway and there is not much you can do to avoid that.

And then again, with enough MP and no worry about ripping Aggro, I'm better save then sorry and overheal, because why not?

sorry but stupid way of seeing thing. overheal is wasted heal .. so you're not safe, you just wasted dps or other actions. .. you can preemptively cast a HoT .. but a direct heal is wasted if nothing to heal ... so just the sorry left

Yeah, because that wasted GCD, that only healed half of it's possible Potency and would better have been a DPS-Spell, has just that much of an effect in a leveling dungeon.

But in all earnest: I talked about "better safe then sorry"-Overheal putting out more potency then necessary. Not about "well, there is nothing to heal and no reason to, but let's cast Cure II anyway"-Overheal. Sure, if a healer is just standing around, casting GCD-Heals constantly instead of DPS, that's an huge loss. But Overhealing 'per se' will happen always, even by seasoned Healers in Dungeons when you are running with randoms as you can't always predict what will happen next. And then I better heal more then less.

- Sure, I could wait just a little longer to pop my oGCD-Healing spell on the First-Timer, but I didn't trust them to not fail the incoming mechanic so I better top them of so they may survive -> Overheal.
- Sure, I could not pop my Assize, but that would be actually be a DPS-loss -> Overheal.
- I better give everyone a HoT, because you never know... oh, they didn't take any damage. Great -> Overheal on every servertick
- Oh great, those damn PLD don't trust their healer again -> Overheal
- Oh shit, the Tank is going down, I better throw a.. oh, my Co-Healer had the same idea. Oh well -> Overheal
- BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD LILY!! -> OVERHEEEEEAAAAAAAL!!!

As someone who has died, and seen others die, simply because the healer(s) got DPS tunnel vision (and failed to top everyone off); I can honestly say I do not care about overhealing.

Would be nice/convenient for the 5% of players and 5% of content it would be relevant for to be an option to toggle on if wanted.

We all know there would be instances of abuse to some healers though and SE are very, very keen to avoid giving players an opportunity to grief another player.

Those players usually see those numbers in that kind of content anyway. Just not in-game.

You should only do this if you are in the middle of blood lily set and the battle would end before you can use your lilys to actually heal/move, otherwise it's a dps loss unless it's downtime or we are talking about dungeons.

So I can see two scenarios here.

1) 1% of the Community uses it to better themselves. 4% use it to improve efficiency in high-end content. 95% use it to judge whether or not you are trash.

2) New healers view this as something positive (dude, 10k Overheal!) and the skill gap becomes a skill chasm.

Either way, I don't see this happening.

i think this overheal meter is exactly like the dps meter discussion that has been going on.
it might be pleasing a group of people and could be a good tool to measure and improve skills but most likely people will just abuse this tool and it will give them more reasons for judging and exclusion people from content.

also i am also in the mindset that overheal isn't as bad as people make it to be cause:

1."better safe then sorry" is a good mentality for a healer cause its always better to be alive then dead (death=0 dps) and no i am not talking about throw a raw heal when everyone are healed but rather waste a gcd to throw a HOT on a tank/party when you think the boss might deal some damage soon those ticks can be lifesavers in some cases and a gcd saver as well or even do aoe heal when u see 3+ people that need heal and the rest are fine cause its faster then casting 3+ ST on them.

2. it can't be avoided cause as others mentioned tanks have their heals or the co-healer casting his instant ogcd when you cast yours and there's overlap between you 2,not to mention that dps also have some sort of hp recovery in their roles as well.

Man I read this topic and I at first was like WTF is this elitist ass request? But then again I can see that an extra text saying overheal could show a player overheal stuff.

I don't know I feel this isn't too much needed (thought I guess coudld be useful) and honestly comes off as elitist.

I don't think it needs to be in overhead text. I do think it should be information available to players after a run in a personal stats window.

A good healer aims for less than 10% overheal in a full fight, if not that’s a failure (:

Actually, a good healer doesn't really aim for any overheal unless it's something ridiculous like 50% where you clearly have a problem and should change something. 20-30% overheal is absolutely ok and normal, even more if you are whm since regens are also counted for overheal and assize is usually used for oGCD damage.

Fairly certain he's a troll. Even Momo has around a 20% overheal on all his clears. Wouldn't read into it, is just bait.

Overhealing in some cases is the most efficient way to heal.

Example: 2 people in your party took damage because X mechanic or whatever, you have 2 options (Ignoring oGCDs):

Cast Cure II to those 2 people: That's 800 potency to both of them and you spend 2 GCDs and 2000 mana. -> No overheal
Cast Medica II: That's 800 potency heal to everyone in the party (counting the regen), you spend 1 GCD and 1300 mana. -> A lot of overhealing

The second option is going to be way better than the first option although you are overhealing all your party.

There's also Assize which is used as a DPS CD more than a Healing CD or just stuff like Regens overhealing. Having 2% overhealing doesn't mean you are healing better than the other person that overhealed 20%.

Regens naturally cause overhealing, and I can't think of a major overhealing skill than Medica II. You can't really avoid "unavoidable" overhealing.

What people should be more concerned with is under healing, which is far more punishing.

Who cares. Overhealing here and there doesn't even matter that much. As a Tank main since beta, I'd MUCH rather have a healer overheal me than not heal me enough/at all.

Overhealing (and under-DPSing) can be just as lethal as underhealing when the tank and healer both end up dry on cooldowns and the mobs are still alive. It's just much less obvious what needs correcting, since punishment is delayed.

Or, to put it another way: wall to wall pulls have an enrage timer. :D

Rarely does a thread make me want a downvote button so badly. This idea is so pretentious .

Overhealing in no way means you missed dps. Casts a ae heal - over heal! Cast a hot? Over heal! Benediction? Over heal? Prep for a tank buster? Whats what...?
Dpsdies because they screwed up and your trying to optimze overhealing? NO OVERHEALING! YAY! (also 0 dps, but that precious healer nuke makes up for dead dps right?)
Rez? NO OVERHEALING!
Tanks blowing their cooldowns cause they don't trust a healer due to always bottoming out on hp? NO OVERHEALING!


Plus this naturally discriminates against whm since hot = overheal but shields don't.

There is so much over healing that in no way involves skipping a dps spell.
