Want to become a mentor, but I'm not sure if I should

Hi everyone,

I recently got the ability to become a mentor through the DoL, DoH route, now I know that isn\\'t enough to become a good mentor so I plan to get a dps to 80 along with my WHM, PLD, CUL, and BTN, along with beating Titania and Innocence Ex so I can have experience with all types of jobs at all levels of play, this comes with my 1000 hours of playtime, and I typically play the game daily if only for a few hours.

But I still feel I won\\'t be a good enough mentor, I look at so many mentors and see them having thousands of hours played, with almost all jobs to 80 and every piece of content beat. Then I look at myself with the bare minimum requirements to be a mentor and think, "is that really enough?", I don\\'t want to play the game 24/7 over the course of thousands of hour\\'s, I don\\'t want to level up all jobs to 80, I don\\'t want to do Ex primals every other day. But the other thing is, I hear all this talk about those same mentors who are just in it for the crown, who berate noobs for being noobs, and that\\'s when I think that maybe I do have enough credentials to be a good mentor because I wouldn\\'t be in it just to berate sprouts and wave around my crown.

So I\\'d like to ask you guy\\'s, are my credentials enough if I\\'m willing to help sprouts? Is there anything I should add?

I know I could help sprouts without the crown, but it just seems so much harder than with the crown. The game gives you so many resources to find and help other people that I see no reason not to use them.

Most people ignore the crown or mock it. Having the crown won't help you help others.

Being a mentor is a meme, the novice network is almost entirely useless. If you want to help someone, just help them, you don't need a crown to do it.

By all means become a mentor but crown or not is it going to change the way you interact with other players in game? The main objective of mentors it to help new players fit into their place in whatever content it is, whether its crafting, gathering, pvp or otherwise. If you feel like you can be of help to these people taking their first steps into Eorzia then thats great, my advice would be to turn the crown off and when giving advice or help do it from a stand point where you are equals as being told what to do from someone in an apparrant form of superiority can be infuriating to some, whereas a word of advice from a fellow adventurer can be more receptive.

At least you can get a mount from it. (doing 2000 mentor roulette)

The novice network is variable depending on what server, what time of day, and what sprouts are looking to get out of it.

If a player is looking for truly basic advice, like "what's the core essentials of X's rotation" or "I'm new to [role], where do I begin?" or the even simpler "how do I use X system?"? Novice network will probably answer it correctly or at least satisfactorily. That sort of basic advice is really all SE seems to want anyways; the mentor program is meant to ensure that new players don't quit the game, not to groom competency in content above normal difficulty.

If a player looking for optimization advice or anything to that degree? Yeah, at best they'll get the same dissent and lack of consensus seen on the forums, or reddit, or where-ever.

If someone wants it to stay on topic and never get used as a global chat, then they'll be eternally disappointed unless they move to a Japanese data center.

Still, OP, Billy has the right of it. The standards to be a mentor are low, you don't need to be one to help others, and some people will be less likely to listen to you if you are one (it varies by person). So become one, or don't. You're plenty qualified if you do, and not missing out on much if you don't.

EDIT: I've never had anyone approach me for advice because I had the crown displayed, which says a lot. If you get the crown, you're doing it for novice network regardless of motive.

The mentor system is so broken that the crown is little more then an achievement reward. If you've meet the prerequisites, you might as well just take the crown as a reward.

Everyone and his mother is a mentor now-day's and the mentor system is a complete joke anyway so you don't have to worry about being an expert.

You seem eager to help so even answering the simplest of questions will make you a far greater addition to the NN that the majority of "mentors" who got mentor status just for the crown/roulette.

Hell, i'd rather have a dozen of mentors like you who go the extra mile to learn classes/mechs over most "mentors" i met so far.

just don't turn on the mentor crown and stay away from the novice network. then just spam mentor roulette ad nauseum and hope you just get a bunch of guildhests lol.

Don't think too hard about it. Wear the crown or not but don't think too hard about it. Unless you're into internet memes, can fit into a "clique" or are interested in constant off topic banter, NN pretty much sucks on Brynhildr so good luck with that. Just be yourself and don't take that crown seriously.

Dude you got to stop taking this so seriously, the mentor system is pretty much meaningless. Crown or not, good players will be good, bad players will be bad, and helpers will be helpers. Please do not become one and try to unnecessarily police everybody, that's a quick way to piss off, or even be blacklisted by many players.

Wonder what the Japanese mentor system is like, anyone have an idea? I've never had a problem with a mentor but I've never popped my head in the novice area either lol.

I thought the crown would be a good idea to let people know where to get help but it seems like most people believe it just makes them unnecessarily full of it :(. I've always liked the watering can idea lol. /shrug, I like the system idea but if it can be made smoother than I suppose that's good too. Not fully connected but curious how this new social system they've been working on will be (when Yoshida was talking about a new loosely connected circle/sort of social mechanic to connect people together), if it might suffer some similar issues or at least be painted that way.

Mostly curious to know if anyone has an idea of what the Japanese use of the system, that and tell Op to go for it if they want it. Some people might give the system a bad name but it would be bad of others to paint all of a group the same due to an icon too- if you give the icon the intended meaning (which is to be a helpful person) then I think you've done right and at least for one person the system has done what it had wanted to do.

If your goal is helping others...the crown probably won't help you help others. I learned that the hard way. But who knows, anything is possible. Good on you for wanting to try regardless.

Pretty much this. That being said, just be sure of the information youre handing out. It doesn't hurt to consult places like the balance either, or guide people to places like that discord. You dont have to be some 90th percentile raider to know how things work. If you have a solid understanding of mechanics and some patience, youll be fine.

By their own admittance, most mentors cheesed their way through the crown. DOH/L or unsynced Ifrit. Most don’t even have their 1000 dungeons, and openly admit that they are mentors for the crown and the private chat room, err NN. Last evening, I’ve even seen one being proud of not doing group content because they suck at it. So don’t worry about it, don’t take it seriously. You want the crown, wear it. People will more likely stop and talk to you because you have a nice glamour than because you’re a mentor.

Getting to mentor is hard now because you have to do every EX mode primal. I can't do the mentor roulettes anymore because I didn't do some of the SB EX primals.

I keep reading about how mentors are a joke but on my server (faerie) the novice channel does a great job of answering questions and helping sprouts. Really hard for me to relate my experience to what is being said.

I sometimes feel like it’s just trendy thing to say, just because every now and then some random person comes to the forums to complain about some random jackass mentor.

Also to the op. Don’t worry about it, you don’t need to know everything, you just need to help people on the things you do know. I have countless hours played and I’m still using the novice network to get answers on some aspects of the game I’m less familiar with.

I would say do as you please. The crown might be a joke to some but it shouldn't be preventing you to do what you want. And if you don't enjoy it, you can just remove the crown (unless you do Mentor Roulette, it'll come back once in duty and you'll have to remove it again when out).

Too bad that your server's NN is not good, but on Twintania's is great; obviously based on only my experience. Offering "advice" in the name of some weird superiority complexe as you stated can also happen without crown *shrugs*. But yeah, I can quite see how NN heavily varies per server and other factors.

I earned Mentor status myself a couple weeks back. So far things don't seem much different. People who are willing to learn will continue to ask questions on their own, those who don't care will remain silent.

Mentor chat is a crap shoot. Siren's during weekday mornings is pretty good though - other than one disagreement over AST status, people are generally asking questions and doing their best to give answers.

Honestly the biggest mistake they made with the mentor system is giving players a cool looking crown. That kind of thing attracts elitists and achievement hunters who only care about looking cool and feeling superior to others, which really defeats the whole point of the mentor system. And that in turn affects those who do honestly want to help people, because they're then counted in the same group as the jerks and assumed to be no better.

I used to wear the crown a lot, but the last few months I've taken it off. I'm still in the NN, but I'm what you'd probably call a "low-key mentor". I'll help people when/if they ask for in the channel. I don't really interact in the channel TOO much. I usually would private message a person if they need extra information. Because most of the time, when I try to give info, it gets buried by random stuff from others in the channel. By all means I'm not the expert and know everything; I could be giving the wrong info at times. I enjoy being a mentor to newbies and others looking for that help. I get satisfaction seeing people thanking me for the help or information I pass along. That's all I care about.

Even so, you can't cure stupid if the person in question won't try to use advice you give. I don't bother trying to help the ones who shoot me down or ignore possible advice that could make their life easier. It's a case-by-case basis with randoms.

Do what you do and do your best regardless. Don't let others bring you down if you want to be a good mentor. :D

If you want to be a mentor just be mindful of the limits of your knowledge and be willing to help. That's it. It doesn't matter how long you've played or what you've accomplished. When a sprout or any other player asks a question in NN (or even outside) see if you can answer it. If you can, provide advice and wait for feedback. If you can't, say nothing or tell them that you're sorry you don't know the answer and perhaps try to see if you can find it from someone or somewhere else. So long as you're willing to make use of it, the mentor system is a great way to assist other players.

No its not hard.People are level 80 now and can zerg those ex's unsynced.Which is how most players became mentor in first place.
And also the reason why most mentors are a burden rather than a help.

You only need to do the EX primals to access mentor roulette, it is not a requirement for becoming a mentor.

Do it. If you have a bad experience, just quit the program. No need to seek forum validation.

*Clears throat* *Steps in front of a microphone* Today's generation (oh god, I know!).. Scratch that.

From what I have observed, the current generation is put down by authority. It starts with cops being treatened like crap down to our trainees at work that have the nerves to simply think they own this place after 6 months and refuse to listen.

In LoL, when I bring up the most basic things I hear "teach me master". What you can gather from that is the supposedly bad term "Master". Or when I am using proper interpunctuations and they talk "liek dis. W8 m8 ull b ded if u dun w8 4 me" and I ask for proper English, they say "r u my english teacher??". Suppsedly bad term: "Teacher". It is most probably not what I said, but they see someone above them. Someone trying to "force" something upon them, even it might be for the better, but the current generation does not wish that. If you do try to correct them in any form, you are "toxic".

So, "teacher" and "master" is the terms they use in a negative way. You know what will happen now? Add "Mentor" to that list. When they see a crown, you can replace the expected comments above with "Mentor". If you want to reach these people, you must lower on their level. If you ask "Hey, could you hand me the napkin, please" he will raise an eyebrow, look at you disgusted and slowly hand it over. If you say" Yo, brah, give me a napkin, bro" he will treat your normal. Avoid shoving any sign of "superiority" into their face. Streetworkers don't wear suits either.

It is stupid as hell that you have to use this banana psychology to reach the younger people of today, but this way you can help a broader audience. This, of course, does not apply to already receptive people.
A mentor crown might get you a stigma for these rookies and they will block any inpute until they learn it in real life the hard way that advice are not instantly a personal "diss".
