A (mostly) fool proof Chimera strategy

Figured out a (mostly) safe spot for Chimera while messing around looking for last chest.

The benefit of this strat is that all members except tank are relatively safe.

Setup:

WAR (or PLD)
WHM x2
Mix of BRD BLM THM
-- at least 1 BRD is preferred for Ballad
-- THM can be substituted for BLM for extra healing / support

There is a sweet spot there that seems to be unreachable for both VoD and draw in, a little more back than our position in the video, but it is a bit tricky to get down without occasion out of range.

Still like to see a vid with melee range DD's. Not everyone has ranged class and it's kind of sad I haven't seen a vid yet with mostly melee range dd's.

Close range is not really bad for this fight (and alot higher DPS), just more skill / focus is required for melee and healer.

As long as they can consistently dodge breaths it's relatively safe.

Yes and Yes.
However, decap them only stops the breath attack for the phase. They grow right back next phase...

Hardest part with melee players is the last phase of the fight. The first 75% can be done without taking any unneeded damage if you stay on his sides and run to his back for that side's breath attack. For example, if you're on the dragon's side, you'd run behind chimera when he readies breath of the dragon.

We still haven't figured out how to avoid everything in the last phase though. The circle of sand traps makes it extremely difficult to keep dodging everything. You're bound to take damage from either melee attacks, breath or traps. Melee will also take damage from voice of the ram once he begins using it as well.

Ahh ok. I'll make sure to tell some of the DD's. I don't think half of them are paying attention to the log when fighting. Le sigh lol

From what we've seen, MNK is the best DD in this fight hands down, but still can't figure out how to survive the last ~30%.

Incapacitation is pretty much pointless, the heads just grow back in like 15 seconds anyways (I would have preferred they gave the heads 5-6k hp each and did not let them grow back). There's literally no safe place to stand and attack at the same time. But there's still a few things we haven't tested, breaking the tail being one of them. Not sure if it remains broken the entire fight, but I'm doubtful about that since everything else that we've broken regenerates. However, if that is the case, 1 PGL should be enough to break the tail fairly quickly which would open up a safe spot for all melee to stand during the entire fight. We'll be trying this tomorrow.

Another thing that might work is breaking his legs. We've never tried this before and have no idea what affect it has on the boss, but if it's anything like Great Buffalo it might buy us enough time to safely burn the last 30% down before he gets back up.

BTW, the safest way to tank this is..... use GLA, Sanguine Rite and just Cure / SS bomb yourself. And you would never lose hate that way either.

You pretty much have to be flawless during the last 30% as a DD. Almost always moving. The breaths keep you from the front and sides, scorpion sting keeps you from behind, VotR is a close range AoE and then the Wompee the sandworm tries to be friends. Where as a BLM can literally stand in the same spot the whole fight and nuke away . . . we need Wompee the sandworm to come out of the walls and feast upon mages.

Is it viable to walk him through all the sand plumes in the beginning to get him down fast? Just curious.

I'll also note the legs next run.

Meh, I was really hoping the answer would be a bit more original than that lol. We'll still try breaking the tail and legs tonight and see what happens. Still, I can't for the life of me understand why they would make so many of his body parts breakable when it actually does absolutely nothing to help the fight. I mean, they did go through the extra effort to make the incapacitations visible on him, why are they so pointless? lol

We're also considering having 2 MNKs on his left side equipped with gloom arrow. That's ~320 dmg to the dragon every 10 seconds and it only takes 1200dmg to break it, so 40 seconds to incapacitate it. But eating just 1 breath = death for MNK as I'm sure you already know lol.

Oh well, will post later with results.

You can run through the traps at any time as long as you're not standing in them when they explode. For the first ~70% the traps are not an issue at all, it's the last phase that gets a bit tricky.

Update:

Tail remains broken once you get rid of it. This opens up a huge safe spot for melee behind him in the last phase. However, the problem with this is that only Maim can break the tail. So you'd need either 1 PGL (not MNK ; ; ) or 2 WARS to break it before the last phase begins.

PGL can hit 400+ with maim when fully buffed vs WAR's ~100. It just sucks that class is better than job here.. PGL is definitely weaker than MNK, but it seems like a fair trade. 1 MNK and 1 PGL would be ideal for melee DPS here.

Still testing what happens with leg incapacitation. Also testing if heads remain broken if you break them after tail is down.


Edit: Another thing I noticed, heads can be broken with limb WS's too not just outer WS.

Dragon: Heavy Thrust, Impulse Drive, Gloom Arrow
Ram: Savage Blade, Path of the Storm, Flat Blade, Godsbane

Edit again: Legs seem to have a ton of HP. Spent the whole fighting using mostly Demolish and Leaden Arrow, and I'm sure we had a BRD as well with a few Leaden Arrows. Could not break them. Wonder if anyone has broken them yet?

You sure only maim can break the tail? Thought I saw a video where a MNK broke it.

You sure it wasn't a PGL? Because if a MNK can break it I'd be very pleased lol. PGL auto attack is about 35-40 a hit, MNK is 50+. MNK also has increased weaponskill damage.

7min mark. Breaks it with Dragon Kick

Interesting.. We kinda gave up on Melee setups though. Can kill it safer with ranged setups in about 6-7 min anyways.

But for those out there that are interested in melee setups, at least it's an option.

Yea, break its tail with Outer(Other) or Legs incaps then people can just pile on behind it. They might still get hit by VotRam
