Glamour Dresser Update - Why so little?

First of im really happy that they finally do something about the glamour dresser and increasing the storage space to 400 is real nice and at least for me more than enough.

However the space was never a issue for me, even now i have still 10 slots left. On the other hand the extrem little glamour plates you can save are a real problem.

Sure its nice that they increased them to 15 but thats still nothing. I realy cant understand why they dont increase them to a decent amout like 30, 40 or more. There are not even enough plates to save one outfit for each job.

I think they should at least give us the option to buy more slots in the moggle store, im pretty sure there are a lot of people that would buy some.

SE stated that they can't increase inventory space for players because that would be too much information for the world visiting feature to handle. I suspect the reasoning for getting only five extra glam plates is the same, because that is additional character information the game must track.

I hoped that we could have at least on plate of each class. Oh well...

You can't use retainers when you're not in your home server.

Also retainer info is likely stored differently because you don't carry retainers around with you. You need to access them with the summoning bell, so that is when the information is requested from the server. Whereas for things like glam plates and your personal inventory, all that is constantly carried on your character. When you visit another server all that info your character is carrying needs to be tracked.

The reason why we cannot access retainers on other servers has something to do with how that information is accessed (retainer info is tied to servers, likely a side effect of how selling on the mb works) rather than world visiting itself presenting a roadblock.

Except you've just given the solution to that problem. If the problem is how it interacts with the world visit system, then you just disconnect those. Already can't access retainers during a world visit... don't let us access the glamour dresser during a world visit. Problem solved.

Far more likely is that their database design and system design here is completely pants-on-head.

While I understand the explanation they've given, it concerns me that they have coded things in such an inefficient way. But I'll admit there's a lot of "behind the curtain" that I don't know and it could be it has to be coded like that to not break other things. Sometimes you can code yourself into a corner and then you have to work with the mess you've made, even if that mess is a masterpiece.

Pretty sure it would go like this :
The dresser is linked to glamour plates that can be linked to gear sets. So essentially they can't disable the dresser in world visit without disabling gear sets too.

And the reason for all this is probably like you said : pants-on-head database/system design.

would you really want to be on another world and stuck with the glam you have and not be able to change it? the shock and horror!!

However, the glamour plates are already restricted in that you can only use them in major settlements (Idyllshire, Ishgard, RR, Kugane & the 3 starting cities - including in the inn rooms, and the 4 housing areas). If they wanted to, they could potentially limit glamour plates to only within inn rooms on visited worlds (since your glamour dresser and plates do transfer to the other worlds). I feel this could help alleviate the issues, as it would only have to dial back to your home realm when you're visiting an inn room. Less information to tussle with then.

"Poor code" is a really overused & bad excuse for an MMO that is about to have its 3rd expansion.

They've never fixed it though. So it's still the reason. If you're the one to step up to the execs and make the case for dropping a bundle on upgrades in infrastructure along with the workforce to do it alongside developing new things so that current players don't leave, please sign that check or make that presentation.

They should fix it. That's the issue.
It shouldn't be a reason, but it continues to be because they aren't dealing with the issue.

I don't think I need to make my case as to why no fixing these issues, and having to tip-toe around them whenever they decide to make content is a bad idea.

ok you tell people there's nothing new coming down the pipeline for 9 months just so they fix the glamor system just so YOU can have your glams anywhere you want.

I see "servers can't handle it, can't do because of the way it's coded" all the time, for all kinds of things and if that's legitimately the reason? What on Earth went on to make that happen??
Starting to make me think they coded some spaghetti onto a toaster to run parts of this game. Some of these limitations are just flat out bizarre. It's like WoW's unexpandable base inventory bag x500.

If they gave you 1k spots in the dresser and 30 plates I guarantee you people on this forum would complain it isn't enough. There are technical limitations. Deal with it.

I'm saying the case has been made before, by myself in several cases. But it's very apparent they were not allowed the entire rework it would require to make a different system if after 3 expansions it remains. Every time we get some sort of useful feature update regarding glamour we get someone who's entire post is about how the update isn't good enough and "they should really just make a better system".

It can't be overused if they've likely proposed the solution to their uppers time and time again and been told "No". It's the reason. I see no reason to continually harp on it as it's likely we will in fact never see a rework of the magnitude needed.

I mean I guess you have to be more decisive on what you actually value to wear as glamour. Unless you wanna pay more for it, that's fine. I don't, I'm a decisive person and can make one choice and stick to it, and if I want to change it, It takes 10 minutes tops.

There's always going to be someone who complains, everyone knows this. That's not a good reason to not fix something that is clearly preventing progress. It's not just glamour they've brought up technical limitations about.

Can you people at least be grateful for these gradual improvements to the system? Do you honestly expect things to go from 1 to 100 in one update?

see thing is every expansion is built on top of the previous one. 3.0 coding is separate and built on ARR's 2.0 structure, and 4.0's on 3.0's. this is why it's very difficult to go backwards and change things. but they also have to keep up with their patch/expansion schedule too and the direction of always trying to create something new instead of going backwards.

I mean a good reason is that it's not within the budget to develop it or maintain it with more server rooms.

Now if they up the sub, then your point stands. I for one am decisive on what I use for glamor and changing a plate out for something I don't use frequently is good enough.

All that being said they should provide it as an additional service. I don't want to pay for it, because I don't need it.

I sincerely hope that they'll at least increase the number of glamour plates again at some point in the 5.X series... 5 plates isn't going to last me the whole expansion.

15 plates, to me, is actually a pretty decent number for most players, even if you level up all your battle classes. It doesn't directly correlate to how many jobs exist, but it also doesn't need to. You don't actually need a glamor plate for every job if your intent is to have a different look for every job. And I'll count them out for you

Tanks - 4 plates
Healers - 3 plates
Ranged Physical - 3 Plates
Ranged Magical - 3 Plates
Melee DPS - 2 Plates

The reason you don't need more than that for just battle classes is that ninja and dragoon do not share any left side gear with any other job, so there's no need to store a separate look for the gear for those jobs when you change to them. Additionally, blue mage, if you have all jobs at max level, will never be sharing gear with the other casting jobs since it's level is so far behind, and so also does not need a separate plate.

Obviously this won't account for people who might want to change looks for crafting and gathering jobs, but at least to me, 15 plates seems a pretty fair baseline. My biggest complaint, personally, with the system hasn't been how few plates, but the restrictions on where I can use them. The fact that I had to be in a city state or end game hub has made me use them far less than I would have if I could use them anywhere.

I only use plates for crafting glamour once the bis shared gear set is released, for eveything else I just use the old glamour system.

Same, I am fine with the current plate set-up primarily cause I do them more by role then I do by job/class individually.

Tank(4) - 1 plate
Healer(3) - 1 plate
NIN - 1 plate
DRG - 1 plate
Casters(3) - 1 plate
Melee(2) - 1 plate
Rng physical(3) - 1 plate
Crafting - 1 plate
Gathering - 1 plate

With this, it leaves with with only 1 plate leftover fr whatever but soon will leave me with 6 free plates for random outfites now.

The text quoted takes more data than what is required by the requested feature expansion.

So to break it down. The images of a glamour are stored locally, in system memory. When you load up the game, your character and everyone around you has equipment showing that is ran from your computer's RAM called for as needed from your harddrive, specifically where FFXIV is installed.

Where the server has to play is requesting which equipment to show. The only thing required from the server is ItemID. This is probably a 8 to 12 digit alphanumeric. We're talking less than a kilobyte of uncompressed data that has to be transferred. To give you an idea of how much that is. If you hit the 3000 cap on the forums, that's 3kb. You're literally using way more data in the zone chat than your character takes up across all of its variables (class, movement, skills, items, ect).
