Next combat update

So... I understand everyone is exited for Shadowbringers.. I am.. I'm looking forward to the new classes new storyline.. but... Not really understanding the gripe about the gender lock races when there is something far more game breaking then immersion coming... a unified combat resource...

Several classes have an issue with resource management.. PLD uses both MP and TP their current mindset... blow their MP tell there's nothing left while getting aggro.. DRK uses more mp then TP but same thing... WAR no issues... BRD uses foe's requiem and ppl want them to spam quick knock.. need i go on? This game wasn't built utilizing a unified combat resource... And most games that do use one built the entire game from the ground up around it... and anytime a game tries to alter the combat resources after it's been properly established..

The game starts off horribly balanced for the new resource.. Nothing works right can't do anything and you're left wondering... why fix what isn't broken?

Most jobs only use either TP or MP. Removing one of them and making everyone use the same generic resource pool will not affect most jobs. Also, I think the general assumption is that most skills that cost TP will now cost nothing, and AOE skills will consume MP.

For those jobs that do actually use TP and MP, things can be easily tweaked to only need one or the other.

Examples (PURELY MADE UP, NOT FROM LEAKS OR ANYTHING)...
PLD: All of PLD's skills could now cost 0 TP to use because TP is gone, and I suspect they'll switch the AOE skill to cost MP.
BRD: Foe Requiem is now on a 3-minute cooldown, and lasts for an explicit duration.
DRK: I'm not even going to guess, since I think they're getting some large changes.
RDM: Ultimately, RDM could already have its reliance on TP removed completely and nothing would change. I bet some people don't even realize that their melee actions actually use TP.

Please don't worry too much about it until we actually see the changes.

The biggest question I have is: What will they do with AST's Spire + Ewer?
Ewer stays the same, and Spire is now +Direct Hit maybe?

This is purely conjecture, however, when they removed elemental resistances, they repurposed them for use in Eureka. Regardless of Eureka's merits (or lack thereof), perhaps they've found another use for the old TP resource that could be new and interesting. Alternatively, they may just want to reduce UI bloat.

Oh are they doing that? It sounds like a great change to me, can't wait to see how it plays out.

I think a lot of jobs would be fine removing TP, so the cost is just a few jobs may come out worse (or better) to fix them up to the change (like paladin draining all their mp on cycle will kill them for anything that went from TP->MP). But we don't know how they're going to get rid of it. You could picture that TP is just removed, every thing that used tp is now free. Lol. Means you can AoE till the cows come home and that might be a different new problem but that's one solution to TP & MP jobs. I imagine it'll be all tp cost spells are now free or that we'll get new mechanics for the jobs that used to rely on mp and tp, just to fit in the aoe mp costs (and everything else is still free).

But to go onto why change it I think because it's going to allow them to put shields into that empty bar now. Which iirc is what they're going to do (didn't say their own bar but that we'll be able to see them now). Also I've been imagining gun breaker is a shield job (tanks by generating short term shields). Although they could fit it into the HP bar (by compressing HP down and multiple colors).

On top of that they're already going in and changing a lot of jobs, so I imagine they see this as a way to get rid of goad and other TP skills and replace them with new abilities (or not at all just to remove button bloat). Personally I'm seeing them go in with both scalpels and hammers to reduce button bloat while adding new mechanics, such that it isn't terribly high skill floor but is more interesting (like if the rumor of shared skills goes away Dark Knight could get their cool abilities back).

The live letter addressing the combat changes is tomorrow, literally 24 hours away. You could just wait to see the devs explain it for themselves before crying wolf.

I have a lot of concerns going into ShB, but them rolling TP and MP into one resource bar isn't one of them.

I mean, why not? Casters already get to AoE with impunity, and they can do so from several yalms back? Melee AoE is both harder to actually hit with since you gotta get right up in there and often use weird angles (Samurai needing to be in a cone in front of the enemies, DRG in a straight line...), AND you get punished for doing so by the fact that it just sucks through your TP like crazy.

It's possible. I was merely suggesting the option that would least change how the jobs currently function.

Well at least i'm not getting roasted, i know the live letter is going to be tomorrow but.. I still can't help but be worried about this... I hope my fears aren't true, and I'm glad people have actually came in here with an open mind saying this may or may not happen. It's good to speculate, get the worst fears out and be pleasantly surprised it's not that... It can always be far worse then what we could imagine though so there is that to... And to Raldo, that's what I have heard for Spire, they are changing it to effect direct hit... Ewer might just be a unified refresh for the new combat resource. I also heard they are removing the role actions as well so... yeah first cross class abilities get changed to role actions now they are gone completely... my worry isn't just the unified combat resource why the title says as thus... wondering if anyone else has worries on what is going to be changed

More than likely removal of TP costs. Makes no sense as it only served to neuter melee jobs already weaker AoEs

As a DRK, even though I use both MP and TP resources, I don't have to manage TP. My concern with the merge only takes place if I can no longer burn through my MP because I can also no longer use weaponskills to get it back. What they are doing with weaponskills, and skills that restore TP is my biggest question. Probably everybody's when it comes to combat. We are just going to have to wait and see. Along with the healer rework, this is what I am the most interested in hearing about.

Expect the worst, hope for the best. The same team thought Bowmage was a good idea at one point, so I am very sincere when I say that.

I am worried, for sure. Especially if the classes it does affect most get a bad deal for sure. I think its alright to be worried about a static system thats been in place for years(and remember some fights taking so long TP starvation was a thing} more specifically, How this new rage meter every job has is going to become the lockdown of skills that used to be used much more frequently.

Yes, I want zero-cost AOE as far as resource is concerned. I don't see a reason for the change if it makes no difference in gameplay, preferably in the form of benefit.

I too would love infinite AoEs for melee as well. WAR over power is already a cone that requires a target, at least let it be free. Its annoying running through lots of mobs and making sure each one was hit a few times. That or a ring that doesnt require a target like Steel Cyclone/Decimate.

For one, Its less data to sync over a network. Less traffic = Less lag.

I just found out yesterday, after over a year of actively doing content as RDM, that RDM uses TP to execute melee attacks.

Anyways, I wouldn't worry. TP in its current iteration is superfluous to begin with and on top of that, don't forget that we're going into a new expansion, with a new level cap, two new jobs as well as rebalancing and reworks of existing jobs across the board. The TP change is not happening in a vacuum. Whatever they're doing, it's accounted for in all the other battle system changes.
