Why do you dislike longer hairstyles and race un-locked hairstyles so much, Square?

I just dont understand why, really. You’re taking ages to release Lyse’s hairstyle, and I guess the reason is because it’s long.

Is there a way to possibly bring this to the attention of an upcoming live letter? It’s like this question is constantly avoided like the plague by Square.

Can’t be because of clipping. They obviously don’t seem concerned about that, considering existing hairstyles clip through a lot of armor pieces.

A lot of them need to be slightly modified to fit the racial skeletons for the different heads, and in the case of miqote, the ears.

All new hairstyles for a while have been race neutral, but it would be a lot of work for them to go back and unlock every style.

As far as long hair goes:

I believe it's something to do with the bones used for physics (Or, an approximation of physics based on original 1.0 spaghetti code for character creation) that make it more work than shorter hairstyles.

As far as race-limited hairstyles:

Due to the aforementioned 1.0 spaghetti code, they have to essentially manually create each hairstyle from scratch for each race. Which is a lot of work which could be spent putting new hairstyles in.

Essentially, it comes down to the fact that, as they're reluctant to completely rewrite the code for character creation from the ground up with sensible 2.0+ versions of code (For reasons such as the manpower it would require, as well as the fact that they likely wouldn't be able to recreate characters with 100% accuracy (Thus would receive complaints) and also would have to completely re-build every unique character in the game) that basically anything revolving around character creation is really annoying to try and do, with it mostly revolving creating new models to add as separate options for each specific race/gender (Thus the inability to say, flip which side a parting is on. As it would require a completely "New" hairstyle option that is the flipped parting...)

Basically, because 1.0 devs had bad code and because Papa SE diverts most of XIV's money to other titles, it's not particularly efficient to work on these things sadly...

(Though, I'm sort of hoping that if ShB performs well that maybe after VII remaster is done XIV's team might get some more resources...)

Really, if we could get them to 2.0 code characters it would make adding hairstyles and customization options a lot easier (You know, like, butts) it's just ridiculously unlikely :(

They should add both, though it'd be unfair if they were to add Lyse's after failing to add Hien's.

I think the better question is, why do they love gear that clips with hair, tails, horns and soon to be long ears so much?

I agree in the sense that more options would be awesome, but I also want to take a moment since we're talking about hair to quietly leave this here for perspective. :P

Seriously though the hair is that bad. Everything is either bald or greasy looking, and this is the game that gets touted as having one of the best character creators in western RPGs. People mod sometimes but if you don't have mods it is a struggle.

SE shouldn't throw their hands up and be like WE BEAT THE COMPETITION WE'RE DONE, more long hair options would be awesome. But good lord we are lucky not to be stuck with six flavors of bald.

I don't disagree with any of this. I think if SE was asked directly, the response would be something similar to your post. However, I will say that I think SE continues to not acknowledge just how much value we place on our character's appearance. They know of it, but not the extent of it. When I think about resources and money being allocated to projects like the FFVII remake, it only infuriates me. There has been so many reiterations/spin-offs/prequels etc. of VII all in the name of fan service to provide a dolled up version of the story we all already know, and for a game that isn't even available to play.

FFXIV is here and now and probably still hasn't reached the summit of its popularity. I believe if SE continues to neglect revamping the customization options, FFXIV will eventually fall behind the times far enough that I fear players will start bowing out to go to other mmos with better options.

I recently saw a mod someone make that attempted to do this, and illustrated why it hasn't happened yet. It was supposed to take the 3rd female Au Ra hairstyle and give it to Miqo'tes, but there was about a 1 cm gap between the ears & the hair.

So yeah, there's reworking that would need to be done. They give us new hairstyles all the time though, so I don't imagine it would be a ton of work for them. They probably just won't want to do it in favor of other work.

Personally, I don't mind some of the hairstyles being race locked. It gives the races a bit of a unique flair. The vast majority of them aren't, so letting the races keep their set of unique hairstyles is fine by me. They only have what... like 4/5 each?

There is probably some weird issue behind the scenes. While in general it's a bit of a myth that the majority of the game is built out of haphazardly slapped together pieces of 1.0 wreckage the fact does remain that 1.0 players could travel straight in to 2.0, so anything linked with characters, what they look like, what they're carrying, wearing, etc. was brought across. You'll notice it tends to be those things that the devs complain about being awkward to update.

Even if that wasn't the case though, I vaguely recall Yoshi mentioning in the past that some stuff would still be limited to give each race something unique, same reason they don't plan to let Miqote wear Elezen starter clothes or Elezen dress as Lalafells, etc.

I'd pay for my favorite FF of all times, though I'd prefer a sequel, let's see Zidane's kid and Vivi's kid and steiner's kid and a more grown puk, and eiko being the big sister all go on an adventure together, bonus points if Zidane's kid is a male battle mage and steiner's kid is a female knight.

I'd like to see a Final Fantasy IV type remake but on the switch for FF VI personally. If all the rereleases are gonna use the mobile version I'd like a new one.

Also a better port of Tactics please. I want to play tactics but don't own a psp or ps1 anymore and the mobile version crash on my phone and tablet.

Yeah, a new Tactics on the pc would be nice, though I still have a working copy for PS1.

Anyways, back to topic...long hair...hmm, kind of nice, but not high on my wanted list, race unlock though...

More customization options in a social game is always welcome.

I pretty much still want Raubahn's dreads for my Lalafell....

....or just more diverse hairstyles for male Lalafells in general. Seriously, I've had the same hairstyle on mine since I made him in patch 2.3. It's just getting depressing at this point.

I would love some longer hairstyles and have been saying similar things for awhile now. Especially when long hairstyles exist in game from npc’s. Specifically like Fran for example. The viera’s models are the same as Fran’s besides face and hair I believe. In the viera trailer they showcased a few hairstyles one of them seemingly a very “Fran-esque” style that is considerably shorter. But to note it does appear to be the longest ponytail currently. The ivalician hair and that hairstyle in the viera seemed to have pushed the length a bit, but not as far as the other npc hairstyles in game. So it’s like they *know* we want longer hairstyles but yea probably technical stuff that maybe hopefully they are working out. I could be mistaken but they mentioned adjusting some elements of character creation when doing viera? So maybe there is hope for that at least.

Also i took screenshots of it, but in the viera trailer, when the viera with white hair does a little spin dance move you can see the ponytail clip right through the body. Im totally fine with clipping if it means having longer hairstyles. But also it’s probably not the main issue preventing it considering hair clipping already exists in game in various amounts.

I guess I don’t mind that races of unique hairstyles, but niether would I be against them un-racelocking them.

People been asking this since 1.0 ... And yet it still is being avoided.
As for how it goes skel wise and all. There are way. I mean, seems like a ton of people are using modes. And some are with long hair as far as I saw, and it didn't clipped more than the current ones we have.
So what's the reason then?

About the only excuse ive seen is clipping....

And that is stupid y if you don't like how it works with armor... then use a different glamor

I wish. But realistically, we probably won’t ever get that until the day they decide to stop making content for FFXIV and move on to Final Fantasy 17 as the next online. Can’t be 16, since they said that title won’t be an mmo.

I wonder if longer hairstyles - specifically a large number of players using them on screen at the same time - might be too much for the system to calculate all that movement at once?

Obviously they can do the physics since we have NPCs like Ysayle and Yotsuyu, but in those cases it only has to deal with one character at a time.

They said they don't want to add long hair because the clipping and they can't add enough bones in the hair.

The dream pretty much died their but man.... I feel like they think we're asking for extremely long hair. Au ra female has a long hairstyle and nobody cares if that clips.

Square give us long hairstyle please! Nobody gives a damn if it's not flowing like it's ff15.
Some of us just sick of short hairstyles patch after patch, hell we only got one new long hairstyle in all of SB and it's just a different version of au ra female long style.

But honestly, I given up after 4 years of short to bearly meduim length hair and ponytails.

Evertime they release a new hair im super disappointed. Ive been using thancreds hair for my Hyur male forever since it's pretty much the only good looking hair for it. the Cloud Hair looks good aswell but only a few ppl on the Fanfest got that one sadly. :(

Part of it might be clipping, and part of it might be the same reason they tend not to add capes. For instance, look at he Samsonian Locks from Palace; it looks less like actual hair and more like wet noodles that have been cut to resemble a hairstyle. Making a longer hairstyle requires of SE too much effort--as they have to create so many "bones" per additional option--when they would rather give more Diadem/Eureka or more cash shop items.
