If the price for a teleport is over 300g, I find another way to get there. Ground travel to nearest city, airship, more ground travel. (I only have 194K g ) Anyone else do this, or do you eventually become rich enough to ignore the cost?

The ingame price limit for teleports is 999 gil, you can get reduced rates either with FC-boni or with manuals you get from your Squadron to bring it down to 699.
You'll reach a point in the game where you'll have enough gil to not worry about spending 999 gil on a teleport anymore and instead "worry" about how much time it would take you to take an airship from Ul'dah to Limsa, to then take the fairy to Kugane (city-state in Stormblood), to then fly over the rubysea (giant map) and then half the way through Yanxia to get where you need to be...
Seriously, it becomes a non-issue, even for people who dont craft. Dungeons, the weekly challenge log and lots of small other things will earn you enough gil to not worry about teleport-fees anymore, I promise.
Personally, I like to refrain from teleporting during story-quests (unless walking is a real hassle, like from Ul'dah to Ala Mhigo or something like that). The game has so many beautiful landscapes that you rarely get to see when you're just running dungeons and teleport anywhere you need to go... so for that and for "immersion"-sake I dont use teleports during quests that have a story-telling-focus as long as the walking/flying distances is reasonable.
Littel, comforting thing to know: Gil is also pretty "useless" - unless you want luxury items, like expensive glamour or furniture or pets, you dont really need to spend much - you can get gear with a special currency that drops from dungeons later, no need to buy any on the market board, so most of the stuff you can spend your money on is "vanity".
The latter. 99 times out of 100, it's not worth the extra cost in time to save on the cost of gil. But if you're a new player struggling to rub 2 gil together, then absolutely find those cheap routes where you can (chocobo porter is another good option).
It can be rough at low levels but you should be making enough gil from doing MSQ and selling random drops you get on the MB so you don't have to worry too much about the fees. There's something not right if you have only 194 gil at level 35.
Not 195.. I have 195K gil at the moment., Had over 200, but I bought some gear for my Ninja to get my item level up enough for the level 40 dungeon/cutscene show.
Chocobo porters helped me out a ton when starting. I remember doing leves in quarrymill and catching that taxi back to Gridania before walking back to Quarrymill for the leve. Done that a few times....god it was awful lol but it gets t the job done when needed.
You wil build enough Gil tho to not worry about it. As said. Dungeons, leves, weekly challenge logs, msq, side quests, selling stuff your retainers find or stuff from msq you don't need. Eventually a quick fetch quest side quest will grant you 1500 Gil and even if you have to port once at max cost to deliver the frog eye to someone in Gridania from Kugane that's still 501 profit. Just play the game and You could and should probably have a cool 80 - 100k by weeks end no problem. More than enough to teleport without financial woes.
the problem of teleports vanish once you get into hunts as you can do a few hunts and got an endless supply of free teleport tickets.
I try use return as much possible because it is free and if it is on cooldown you can roll bluemage and use selfexplode so you can return anytime you want. Only useful thing bluemage have lol.
I just set Kugane as my free teleport to use as a transfer station so everything is pretty cheap
I haven't thought about teleport costs for years, even when I was low on gil, I never got low enough for it to become mildly restrictive. So much content right now throws gil at you that it becomes more wasteful trying to avoid teleporting. Still, some guys I know still somehow manage to regularly run around with an average of about 10k to their name after playing for 5 years. I don't know where all their gil goes.
Setting favored locations in places you visit frequently will help a lot. I still have Horizon marked.
For the big fees, I have Kugane set as my home location. Between that and my house in the Goblet, I can port between the sides of the planet on the cheap.
...And then half the time I forget about it and just pay the full price anyway, because this game has few real gil sinks and it's hard to not end up fairly rich.
Anecdotally, gil doesn't become a problem for teleport and repair expenses Edit: at later levels due to roulettes giving quite a bit of gil.
Aetheryte Tickets can help save gil. Any content that gives allied seals for you to buy them from your GC vendor.
In addition to hunts, Blue Mage's Masked Carnival gives a lot of allied seals.
The stages' one-time completion reward gives at least the equivalent of an "S" hunt in ARR (100 allied seals) on top of a gil reward. A few reward 2x. There are 25 stages altogether. The weekly challenges reward 100 + 150 + 300 allied seals. Each ticket costs 5 allied seals.
The caveat is you have to be okay with BLU content. If you are, it's a nice side benefit to save gil / get other allied seal stuff.
If I'm in a city and need to get back to Thanalan or nearby, I'll still take the local airship to Gold Saucer (free), and from there take the airship to Ul'dah (also free). Get to knock out a GATE if it's up, mini cactpot if it's my first travel of the day, retainer bells are pretty quickly accessible.
Personally don't mind spending a bit of extra time traveling. Set a heading and auto pilot, gives me a few moments to tab out and check anything else in the mean time.
I'd say for me, it's not necessarily the cost I worry about, just the number of zones it'll take to get where I'm going.
Ya know back in my day, unless you were a Druid or a wizard, you had to run everywhere!
Old habits die hard. The only teleports I really use are return, which ive had set to Mor Dhona since I first arrived there back in2x, and now I use my house teleport to get to kugane. I run just about everywhere else from these 2 spots. Or well fly now.
I wouldn't worry too much. Even with your 194K gil you could teleport almost 200 times at max price. You shouldn't need to be teleporting this much and the MSQ will throw money at you left and right. Just don't go crazy with buying stuff off the MB and you'll be fine. Eventually, you'll get to the point where you forget teleporting even costs money. I could teleport a couple hundred thousand times before needing to worry.
Setting favored locations really helps to lower the costs of teleport's as some have mentioned. Also make sure to link the FF14 Companion App to your account for another favored teleport location.
I personally made Limsa Lominsa and some of the other main cities favored locations as they are frequently teleport-ed to in the early game.

Favoured locations definitely help, although it would be good if they could add one more choice with each expansion! Three plus a home point were fine in ARR, but the number of - and distance between - cities keeps going up while the teleport options remain the same.
I mean, depending on where and why you teleport, walking/flying isnt possible - I have my gathering routes, that require me to be in Coerthas at 6 (paprika), in The Lochs at 10 (Evergleam), in The Fringes at 12 (Gyr Abania Ore) and in Yanxia at 2 (Yanxia Cotton Balls)...
But yeah, during something like the MSQ I prefer walking aswell, because the game and the landscape is indeed gorgeous - no matter how many people complain about textures and the like.
With the ease you can get today teleport tickets, the teleport rates are a thing of the past.
My authenticator free teleport is Limsa which early on was a great choice since it has easy access to the waking sands via the boat and essentially cuts costs when getting from Stormblood zones back to ARR zones. Even now its a good choice since its my chosen Grand Company and has easy access to vendors and the market board.
My Return is set to Rhalgr's. I go there often enough that having it also be free is a great choice and gives me access to the Gyr Abania region cheap.
I have an apartment in Shirogane which cuts my costs for going to the Doma regions tremendously.
My favored destinations are New Gridania, Ul'dah and Foundation to get around the world cheap.
On top of all that I have a metric ton of the 40% cost reduction tickets from squadron missions.
A good way to make some quick gil on a new character is to do every guildhest once on all the jobs you have leveled for the gil bonus. No more worries about teleports and repairs.
They also gave a discount Return to use recently. Self-destruct and BLU for a return that only costs like 30 Gil or so.
I literally have so much money that it doesnt bother me. Literally running a roulette a day, the 9000 gill funds all my transporting needs and that is only trial roulette.
As just about everyone else has said, you'll get to that point where a 999 tele isn't anything major.
With that said - I really don't like spending 999 on a tele myself D: I have plenty of gil, and I definitely waste it in far more ridiculous ways, but that 999 port just kills me. lawl.
Hey that thousand gil adds up, especially if you do gathering and crafting.
I ran around like crazy to get all of crafters and gatherers to the current level cap in SB, my tickets probably saved me a mil on that alone.
It can be rough when starting out, but don't worry. Most people learn to manage their gil in a way where they acquire more than they spend, and it gradually builds up on its own so long as you don't go crazy with major purchases. It just takes a little while to unlock enough content to get to that point. Until you do establish an equilibrium with the game's economy, I would reduce teleporting as much as possible.
First and foremost, set your home point to the aetheryte you visit the most. I am not sure if you have access to Kugane yet, but once you do you need to make a decision about if it will be Eorzea or Othard that you will spend most of your time at, and set your HP to one of those aetherytes. If you have/get a residence, this decision is easy.
Being frugal with your teleports is advised as well. As an example take care of all the things you need to in one zone/continent before porting over to the next. Airship travel will also open up as you progress the MSQ, which also helps to reduce port costs. Utilize a chocobo/falcon porter, ferry, airship etc. if you can before porting. Bloodporting is also an option if your return is on cooldown.
One thing I know for sure is I didn't make my first million being reckless with teleport costs, and I still don't to this day and usually only port if my destination cannot be reached from my current location in a single load screen.
You can get through the entire story without having to stop and earn gil. Just sell all of the junk you get. Pick up side quests that offer gear. The MSQ gil rewards will end up paying for all of your teleporting needs. Basically the gil in this game is mainly for indulging in any side content (crafting, housing, etc.). There are multiple ways to earn battle gear that doesn't involve gil at all. But I think the devs did a pretty good job of making sure you have plenty of gil to carry you through the story. Side quests can always give you a little more.
They did cap the teleportation cost at 999 gil. I DO however think that all hub areas like Rhalgr's Reach, Idyllshire, and all Towns like Gridania and Limsa Laminsa should get the half off price your favorites get.
Don't forget the Saucer have its teleport price halved and if you make it a favorite it goes to be your gateway from SB to ARR zones.
I just wish the porters had the option to take you to the closest large city nonstop. That way, I could start the trip, and go for a pee break and coffee refill while my character is navigated automatically through the confusing maze of zones back to the city. One thing that drives me to use an expensive teleport is that I just can't figure out a path to my destination using the in-game maps.
Also, I suppose there is the security token, which gets you an additional free destination. (Wondering if it's also free of the Home cooldown.)
The teleport system really needs to be readdressed as the continue to expand the geography of the game 999 cap is nice but even that adds up when they do these MSQ quests that have you popping back and forth all day between Limsa and Doma.
I’m more in favor of a system that asks how long it’s been since your last teleport instead of distance traveled to determine price. Also the removal of Return as a spell with the tradeoff being you can teleport for free by interacting with a large aethercyte.
Return is not necessary in Haukke. The door on the back of the first boss room opens precisely to be shortcut on the run back. Is it convenient to use there, yes. But in no way necessary.
Additionally, there's nothing saying that they don't add crystal ball or something, like what you see in Haukke Hard Mode, after defeating the second boss that interacting with it returns you to the entrance. But yes, you don't have to use Return in Haukke, and it actually saves you only a few seconds (I know as I've gone through Haukke in a party with Return on cooldown. I had used it before popping in)
