Blu Mage makes me sad

Every since beta was released in ps3 I was hoping one day blue mage might be introduced to the game. I always wanted to main it and Everytime I mentioned it to my friends everyone would say it will never happened stop dreaming. Then SE announced blu mage and I got excited my dream to finally be realistic. Then I saw the Livestream and heard about the restrictions it had and could not main it. Yes I frowned but then I kept thinking and maybe I might like it so I stayed open minded. January 15 came logged on ffxiv and started playing Blu and I loved how fun it was and how everyone was interacting. Then after a few spells later and levels later I found out how weak I was hitting to enemies and how underwhelming the job was. Even though I kept open minded maybe level 50 is good. Once I got to 50 and completed unlocking ever spell and carnival I was not impressed. I still felt underwhelming and I had nothing to do. That is when it hit me like a ton of bricks. Blu mage is a true gimmick, a mockery, a waste of content. It's just sad how there is so many limitations to a job that is weaker than other REAL JOBS at same levels. Honestly I believe Blu should just be a real job. Tank stance is a joke, white wind is stupidly strong for no reason and you have spells that kill yourself which makes no sense. I understand they wanted to make it feel like a real Blu job but it can't be done. Well... It can be done by learning spells in the open world and making duty finder restrictive on what spells you have in order to use it. But I highly doubt they would do that. Not that they can't it's just I don't feel like my wishes would matter to them. I'm not purposely writing this to bash on SE but I'm just more sad how blue mage became a job that just stands in the side lines. I wanted to main it and play with my friends because after all Ffxiv is a mmorpg. I don't understand this solo content when Ffxiv is not a single player game.

You're not the only one with these sentiments. Blue Mage makes me feel blue, too.

Don't listen to the trolls. You're right to express yourself and I agree with you. BLU is a massive disappointment and a waste of dev time in this current iteration.

You aren't alone, man. Plenty of people are unhappy with the implementation. Up until about a week before the release I was under the impression it was going to be a solo class with the Masked Carnival functioning as a way for Blue Mages to earn skills from toned down primals so they could be...ya know...solo'd. Then we got a list of where we'd be acquiring our abilities and my heart sank. I solo, that's how I play the game, no FC, just use duty finder to stay geared up to a certain point. This locks me out of all of that. For some reason you can't even use squadrons to learn Glower so you can at least get to the Masked Carnival. It just feels mean spirited and ill thought out.

From what i've seen of blue mage which isn't much because I refuse to play it, blue mage is a test bed.

I feel the game devs aren't brave enough to give their playerbase a firm NO when it comes to jobs, and blu is the beta to see if they can pass off a gimmick as a job to satisfy those people, I love blue mage but this version is a travesty mainly because it doesnt fit into the gameplay or world, at least not in a smooth way. For devs that always mention resources are tight the introduction of blu feels like a slap in the face because although we have 2 more jobs coming it could be 3 if those precious resources weren't wasted on blu(yeah, I dont consider blu a true job)

What irks me the most is the term "limited job" that just exudes laziness, it tells me before anything else that its an incomplete project.

The crazy part is I can envision a blue mage that could work in the system and could still be true to itself, it would take work, alot but it's possible to make a true job out of it.

Why didn't they make it so blue has to go out and collect its arsenal then turn around and place those abilites into either a dps, tank or healer rotation? It would be such an amazing way to build a job. Sure, some would say "thats too hard", oh well, it's not for you then, they had the chance to make a job that would evolve with patches, more abilities, more styles, but instead you got a gimpy, weak mage that plays by itself.

yes, i'm salty over this job, because it could signal a sign that these broken jobs are the future and I hate that thought, but when I login and see "try our FIRST limited job" that raises question, I know it sounds wrong.....but I want blue mage to fail, I want it to flounder because imo it may work out better like that in the long run.

Yeah... I was hoping since the job was locked out of DF I could go in by myself and use all my OP skills to solo the dungeon. Turns out BLU can't solo or join DF because they're just that bad. Not being able to go in to get carried by my NPC squadron was an extra disappointment.

Maybe SE will improve it by giving us WEAPONS WITH STATS, better potencies, stronger CC, less RNG for the more valuable skills... there's a whole lot they can do to improve BLU, I just hope they do something. It's current iteration is a disappointing gimmick at best.

i think you've all underestimated how much importance the devs place on balance between jobs in this game. BLU in its current iteration would be a nightmare to fit into the mould so they just said let's not try to fit in there and have it as a separate thing.

Not at all. Actually its pretty close to being balanced now, and the rest of it is just making enemies immune to broken effects. This is actually really, REALLY bad excuse anyway.

It really wouldn't.

It has all of 3 skills that would require major changes (White Wind easily solved by giving it a large CD, 1000 Needles easily solved by putting a minimum level requirement that makes sense for its DPS and moving the mob that teaches it appropriately and Mighty Guard which could be easily solved by reducing the numbers on it significantly, or better yet, putting some effort into making it a skill that actually resembles the ability that's been in the series for years...)

Everything else is just a matter of tuning numbers. Potency up, Off-Guard bonus down. Adjust Peculiar Light's effect or cooldown.

Finally, make key skills accessible. Easily solved by adding in totems or copy/paste with different visuals for the skills needed to maximize DPS (The DoT from Pharos Sirius and the 3 different CD Primal skills)

Oh my, such a nightmare!

It would require doing minimal changes! So hard! Not like the overhauls that are coming to numerous classes in 5.0!

Blue Mage in its current iteration completely invalidates their concern about Blue Mage breaking the game. The only ability that poses any sort of problem at all is White Wind, and it'd easily circumvent being a 'nightmare' by simply making it have a cooldown.

Remove White Wind, and Blue Mage has one of the blandest and weakest kit of any job in current content.

It's almost as if we've played the classes extensively and can make comparisons to their strength and can see where skills are too powerful or too weak‽

Sure, it would take some work, especially since devs have to take into account many things, such as PvP, gear scaling, various different levels of content as well as future content.

But honestly, it's not as if BLU is super whack and 10000 miles away from being anything like any other job. Heck, the general consensus is that at level 50 when 1000 Needles stops being just plain better than every damaging skill because of garbage potency levels, BLU feels just like any other DPS class, if not just a bit weaker.

Of the many skills they have available, few of them are noteworthy in terms of power. Those that might be, are already kept mostly in line with many things being immune to insta-death effects...

Which honestly just makes the main hurdle, being one they artificially created by sticking core skills behind dumb RNG in EX Trials.

Not exactly super hard since the canes are fairly minimal, but it'd require some more work on the art departments...part as well as putting drops into dungeons from 1 to 70. That would also force them to readjust stats garnered from gear. So there's some moving parts they'd have to tinker with but I think we're both well aware of that.

Yeah, but it's just that, a bunch of tinkering. Not a massive overhaul like some people suggest.

The job is just... So close as is... It makes it kind of infuriating in a way xD

That said, they could also alleviate some of their work by restricting DF until level 50, not only to push the overworld leveling/hunting but also mean they won't have to make Canes drop in all those dungeons.

I really feel your pain and blue mage is one of my favorite classes in ff it's so blocked off in so many ways

Oh absolutely, its tuning changes, giving certain enemies immunities to certain spells, restricting White Wind, so on and so forth. Harder then flipping a switch sure, but not some herculean task either.

And I am right there with you. I actually REALLY enjoy the class which is why I think its so frustrating to me that it is so limiting and limited. I don't have a free company, I don't have three other friends who play the game, I play the game within the scope I am capable of ((I am a pretty limited player due to time restraints)) and seeing the job be SO CLOSE to a normal job in the bulk of its skills and abilities but restricted from doing them because of some nonsense OP arguments just drives me insane.

There are people who are COMPLETELY DONE with Blue Mage, less then a week in. Nothing to fall back on, no Duty Finder, no more Masked Carnival, you've learned it all and are stuck on old content that you'd either be forcing your FC mates to run with you for no gain or...actually that's it. Its side content you can complete in less then a week if you have the people for it.

Heck, I was pretty much done to the extent of my capacity within a day...

As a solo player, leveled up and got most of the soloable skills (Still can't learn Mind Blast from Tam-Tara and it's such a pain to solo at such a low level with such poor potencies meaning I have to do everything with 1k Needles...) within a few hours. Like I started at 6am and was done by noon >.>

So irksome to be done just when the class was picking up a bit, as my stats were getting to the point where Drill Cannon was almost competitive with Needles, as I was not needing to rely on Mighty Guard to not be 2 shot by enemies (I suppose, part of that way my own doing what with farming mobs 10 levels above me because Acorn Blast > 1000 Needles is #FairAndBalanced) and then I stop and think... "Well... Now what?" with the only option being to spam PF and grind out Dungeons/Trials to get spells to... Shelve the class anyway because there's nothing left to do?

It's also depressing to think that the same thing might happen again with the next update to BLU. Spend a few hours leveling to 60 and grabbing all the solo friendly spells and then... Shelving BLU once more... (Also, I'm dreading taking BLU's potency into the start of HW content with their bloated health pools... RIP me who can't just get a level 80 buddy to power level me...)

I actually got lucky, solo'd Tam Tamara at twenty and learned Mind Blast first try. Then killed Ifrit 300 times before learning normal mode doesn't teach Eruption. Whoops.

Heavensward enemies aren't so bad. I always take my fresh fifties to Falcons Nest and whack around the enemies near there for an idea of where they are comparatively. You can solo Cutters Cry for Rams Voice and Dragons Voice if you don't already have them and they don't live to the second use of Dragons Voice. That's actually one of the few parts of Blue Mages that might be too strong, its multi-target damage. Due to the way the class works, by building layers of damage increases on top of one another, their non-reduced AoEs ((Which is everything but the Primal skills and even then Ifrit and Garuda don't suffer from it)) is really good. Which really just makes them great at cleaning out trash mobs and just okay at single target damage.

use the slime buff, pull all mobs till boss, use the atk buff, swiftcast and blow yourself up - all mobs dead and you just gotta run back^^

I did cutter earlier, was easy, not too long either but i only got the ram move... troll much i guess >_>

I've found that the early mobs in an expansion are unusually hardy compared to previous content and even later expansion enemies...

Like, doing Hunts I find that the level 50/60 enemies have more health than the level 58/68 ones despite me going around and killing them at the same low level.

As far as Tam-Tara and Cutters... I may get around to them at some point, but ehh... The prospect of soloing them some more for more RNG chances at spells I still won't use because I have nothing to use them on, is not one that fills me with enthusiasm... Especially not when I'm still grinding out my RDM, BLM and AST right now (3 actual jobs that have actual content I can do with them)

Even without it, you can use Plaincracker as a good substitute. You can get that from the Clay Golems around Little Ala Mhigo. It'll take another cast or two since you aren't getting the 310 off of the Dragons Voice combo. Off Guard, Peculiar light, Plaincracker til dead. You can toss in Bad Breath if you want but its not really necessary. I always tend to use Bristle before I go into combat so my first Plaincracker gets a nice boost.

But I don't blame you. I got lucky on the rng of both Mind Blast and Dragons Voice/Rams voice, both on my first try. Tam tamara was worse, I did that just a few levels past the instance level so it was a slog of popping off Acorn bomb/1000 needles. I went into Cutters Cry at 50 with some Ironworks gear and the rest bought gear from Ishgard so I got to do more then just mash 1000 needles and nap.

If I have the patience I might try party finder before the fad falls off so I can finish the class before people stop swarming it.

I think the work of making Blue Mage into a proper balanced class is more than most people estimate, and its unlikely a proper Blue Mage can coexist with the skillset mechanic and the enormous bloat of filler spells it currently has. The thing is, this amount of work would be absolutely worth doing because they have clearly shown to us that the limited job form of Blue Mage is unfun, shallow, and completely unworthy of sacrificing a potential real job for. They gave us their "authentic" blue mage experience (which doesn't very strongly resemble blue mage in the older Final Fantasies tbh) and its terrible, so frankly? Stick to adapting classes instead of copying them from other games, not every adaptation needs to be as controversial as SMN.

Been a while since I logged into these forums but..
During the FanFest day1 when BLU was introduced, I was watching it with gf and I got a bit sad about no new job reveals, until the end. I got so hyped over the CEO walkin in dressed all blue and even with the reveal slide, I was thinking about the "Limited Job".
Would it be limited to one per party, would it have something to do with multi-roles (personally not a fan of), would it at release be limited to lv50 and in expansion be brought up to speed (to avoid ninja-trick attack shenanigans in Omega)..
I did not expect them to go this way at any form. I felt it was way too retarded (no pc police plz) to have it cut off from the game such as it is now. Still my worst came to be and now there's even more of them on the way by the looks of it.

I don't mind new concepts, but when the idea is to have it act as a job, but not really.. That's not new. When you limit something people love (in this case, BLU), it's BOUND to have a backlash. Brand new ideas are hard to come by, but this Limited system feels more like a trial-run than an actual addition, and I wish it to go away, thrown back into the pit whence it came. Heck, I don't even bash Eureka.
And when people tell me / us to just suck it up or go play something else, is that a justifiable claim? I think we all have similar feelings (not necessarily exactly similar), and there has been a lot of good suggestions, good debates and active discussion regarding Limited Jobs.

I would love for SE to back down a bit on this and actually make it into a full-fledged job. But it's not what I expect them to do, they seem pretty set on their plans. I saw this poopstorm coming after the reveal of Limited Job reveal on the 2nd day, but I still had a go on BLU. I started on 15th and was fully done on 17th with all achievements, spells and Carni done. Now all I have left is AFK in Mist/MorDhona/Rhalgr. I cannot farm tomes, I cannot farm birds/dogs, I cannot even do Mainstory. I can ofc use RDM but I have really low motivation now after FC is taking a break and BLU ended up as is.

The notion of "BLU might not have spells learned to use DF" is also bonkers. Just last night I was doing roulette on PLD, and I had a SMN using only Ruin2, absolutely nothing else, in a lv50 dungeon. Just having a spell learned doesnt suddenly make a job use it. What if I had all spells learned on BLU and still went and only spammed Water Cannon?
"What about meta spells?" Not everyone cares about using the absolute best spells / skills. I dont give a butt if a BLU is using 3-5 spells, as long as it doesn't take 50min+ to finish a duty. And even then, anyone actively maining or even playing BLU should have a few skills on their book. Someone even suggested in Reddit to lock DF until you have done lv50 quests, which require you to have at least a handful of spells.

"It has OP spells" The only ones considered even remotely OP have some serious drawbacks.
- Final Sting / Self-Destruct obviously killing you. The gain from these are set back from having to be raised + weakness. And even then, it's not rocket science to half the potencies if they were too strong.
- White Wind has massive cost + agro generation. And this does not a healer make. With only Lucid as agro dump, no Esunas except Erase, no ress to speak of, no regens, no shields, no omfghggsgsg-heal ála Benediction..
- Mighty Guard has serious dmg dealt down, and a 40% mitigation doesn't make you survive tanking with Cloth gear. It only has some utility in buying you few seconds at best. ALSO NEVER USE IT WITH WHITE WIND IN LEARNING PARTIES! Your lv70 buds won't appreciate it.
- Missile/Screw having really low %, not working on overlvled mobs, nor any revelant boss mob. Also for adds such as the ones in Ramuh or Levi, having a 30% chance of halving the hp is not that OP. When it actually hits you could've killed it already.
- Any CC move, because trash mobs have never been a problem, and pretty much all bosses are resistant to them, apart from Silence.

I just feel that it's SO close as to become an actual job. Even the dps is almost there, maybe a inch bit too low. And i'm not going to say much about the rotation, as it's actually more complex than BLM at 50.

Back to Limited Jobs and what they bring to the game..
I feel that the gains aren't that massive. What we got from this is people killing outdoor mobs, using PF to do old duties or have friends to solo them. And then Carnivale. Is that new? Killing mobs/Duty stuff is not new, it's no more exciting than farming fates for Atma. I at least lucked out and learned almost all of my spells with no trouble. I guess you could think of it as collecting minions from duties.
Carnivale is sorta-new, but does it really force BLU to be limited? Why not develop a similar thing to all jobs? The new stuff is mostly the resistances/weakness to different elements/types.
I feel like a broken record at times repeating these but I hope SE takes the Job back to consider it an actual DoM. Back in FFV, I didn't have to change BLU away midway through the game, in FFX Kimahri didn't suddenly become unusable after Macalania. I don't use BLU in FF games because they might make the game cakewalk, I use them because the theme, the class look, the versatility while still being suboptimal. I don't care if you nerf White Wind in XIV, I just want to play the game as my favorite job.
It's not impossible to make stuff work. If they ever want to bring back Limited jobs, they could make up a totally new job (isn't that what Yoshi-P said on some interview, to make a XIV-original job). Why butcher one of the all-time favorites?

Blue Mage needs a set of real off-gcds to begin with to become an actual, properly playable job. The Primal Skills are some of the better animated abilities Blue Mage has, but the role they occupy in the rotation as filler spells to weave in makes them feel like they lack impact. A lot of the currently very situational or borderline useless Blue Mage spells could be retooled into off-gcd skills, while the Primal abilities would probably benefit from being more mechanically involved (they are effectively the closest thing BLU has to skills like Verholy, Verflare, Foul or Summon Bahamut in terms of having that "ultimate spell" flair). Blue Mage would need more interaction between gcd skills too if it was to become a real class (maybe making its dots worth maintaining would help, as right now the only one that is a potency gain to keep up is Song of Torment). The current form of the class is severely lacking in mobility and would struggle with any movement phases in Extreme or Savage (even off-guard has a cast time). Blue Mage needs a Limit Break 3 animation and the ability to LB in general... this could be ultimate Blue Magic skills of old such as Grand Delta from FF6 or Shockwave Pulsar from FF8. Ultimately though, I don't think a retooling of Blue Mage as a real job would have all currently existing 49 skills survive the transition, some of them are pointless or overlap with each other too much, and the class currently has more skills than even level 70 classes (though its a very quantity over quality situation), so a lot of them would probably need to be deleted, and maybe they can make room for more famous Blue Magic skills such as Goblin Punch and Magic Hammer.

Let's face it, the Carnivale should never have seen the light of day. It depresses me to heck when the developers forget this is an mmo.
A lot more of the Blue Mage skills should have been open world.
If they wanted all Blue parties, then the class should have been able to properly diversify at level 50.
But, the biggest gripe is the level cap. This limited class feature is simply an awful idea. What exactly is the point?
The only thing I can think of is the lack of resource or motivation to produce a fully complete new class - and that is worrying.

There's nothing inherently wrong with having solo content in an MMO. Having different content helps satisfy more players and brings diversity for those that play multiple types of content.

Unless you mean to suggest that being an MMO must have everything require large groups of people? Every MSQ needing 24 people? How many people should it take to craft a bolt of cloth?

At best, I could have seen Carnival being sort of like PotD/HoH with the option to go in with a group (With encounters being scaled appropriately) but it's not the end of the world that it's solo content. In fact, I dare say there's a considerable number of primarily solo players in the game that loved the idea of having some solo centred content added (Since, solo players do still play MMO's, due to the continuous updates, large worlds and multitudes of ways to advance their character that the genre offers over offline games)

Yeah... It honestly comes off as BLU was something they just rushed out to stop people asking for it, rather than creating it because they wanted to put it into the game.

The fact they suggested that more limited jobs would come in the future worries me a lot. As it will mean they'll churn out more half baked classes and just stick them in the "Limited Job" role for reasons I don't honestly know...

It's also strange that they do this now, when there's also an expected 2 new full jobs coming with Shadowbringers. Which, if true, means that they are in fact still able and willing to create new full jobs, but chose not to for BLU.

But yeah, the future is what I'm most concerned with. The future of BLU and the future of all the other classes they might be planning to make Limited for no reason other than to half-ass them. BLU has the potential to be a fun and unique job with its own side content built in through spell collections and playing around with OP skills in irrelevant content. There might be other jobs that they intent to make Limited that could also be super fun (Beastmaster comes to mind for example)

Blue Mage makes me happy.

I understand they wanted to make it feel like a real Blu job but it can't be done. Well... It can be done by learning spells in the open world and making duty finder restrictive on what spells you have in order to use it. But I highly doubt they would do that. Not that they can't it's just I don't feel like my wishes would matter to them. I'm not purposely writing this to bash on SE but I'm just more sad how blue mage became a job that just stands in the side lines. I wanted to main it and play with my friends because after all Ffxiv is a mmorpg. I don't understand this solo content when Ffxiv is not a single player game.

Single-player games can have multiplayer content (e.g., Dark Souls) and vice versa: just look at the bevy of solo/solo-able content in The Secret World, Star Trek Online, Elder Scrolls Online, and, you guessed it, FFXIV. For the vast majority of MMORPG players, solo play is actually the default mode of play, even if they prefer playing with friends/other players, and then there are those, like me, who actively prefer to tackle content either by ourselves, or in temporary cooperation with other players (think S-ranks). The notion that just because this is an MMO that all content should be funnelled into the Duty Finder would work at cross purposes to SE's aim of attracting a broad base of players who all enjoy the game for different reasons.

Leaving that aside, though, I share your sentiments about BLU... But just for the wrong reasons (for me, it's not solo-focused enough).

When it was announced that Blue Mage would be a limited class I was disappointed but it's already apparent that the Devs have a hard time balancing the current classes at this time.

So I stayed open minded when they made it sound like it was going to be a broken class that would allow me to use crazy spells in end game content, like they were pitching how Doom could work on Raid bosses during Fant.

Once I got to end game 50 content, these bosses are pretty resistant to a majority of spells and so are quite a few trash mobs.

Basically I was open to the idea of Blue Mage being the Game Genie of older content and found myself very disappointment in that regard as well.

So where is the thread where we ask SE to make BLU a main job because I don’t want to give up hope!

After looking at what BLU, it would have made a cool DPS caster. It would have also been easy to make it about hunting spells and let it join DF. Level 1 trait would give xp bonus from open world mobs. The job quest would be go learn a certain set of spells and you couldn't "unlock" DF role until you had those spells equipped for your current level.

Then the combo system would be fun like Petrify > Drill attack, Ram Voice > Dragon Voice, Bad Breath > Aqua Breath. Basically debuff for a starter then clear away for greater potency.

The fundamental problem isnt BLU itself its the fact that so much of it is tied to RNG in old content rather than making anything really new s.o its "limited"

BLU is invested in running old content and instances to get moves.
If they do Puppetmaster or something similar it will be tied to gil or some random currencies that you have to farm endlessly to get the best moves or sets (item drops) to craft like in FFXI you could get models off the MB for that particular bit of instanced content.
Just wait and see Beast master is going to be beast tribes for ffx type monster arena and if they do something like Corsair or Gambler proper its gonna be MGP farm.

Instead of giving us viable raid jobs particularly dps that the community wants its gonna be this kinda thing chopped up once a year getting updates.
