Or have any issues been resolved and we could potentially see a Xbox release along with 5.0?

Microsoft is. Microsoft will not remove the xbox live requirements to play FFXIV.
Sony does not require PS+ to play FFXIV as well as several other MMOs outside of ESO
This is blocking them from even talking about crossplay with Sony for FFXIV.
I wonder if the data center split was done knowing they'd be adding another platform.
100% Microsoft at this point, its sad
Judging from other games I'd say Sony. They don't like cross play with other consoles and were taking some flak by denying crossplay with Fortnite a while ago if I remember correct. People that had previously registered with PS4 were tied to the PC and PS4 and couldn't use the account on the Nintendo Switch version of the game forcing them to either abandon using it on the Switch or create a new account.
Honestly I rather wait until Microsoft gets a new console out before we get back into the "consoles are holding back the game for PC players" I believe there is a lot of rumors that the PS5 will be out within the next 2-3 years and by then Microsoft should have a new console out also.
Don't hold your breath for it. Plus I really don't want a lot of the xbox players to come into XIV
i think that point was dropped but they were still unmoving on removing the second pay wall subscription on top of the ffxiv subscription at least that's what i recall from the last time it was brought up.
with the PS5 and Xbox next coming soon (if rumours are to be believed) it may be waiting to be a flagship release for the new xbox.
another thing to note as well is the very poor reception xbox gets in the east (in 2017 in the whole of a quarter of the year only 1 xbox one x was sold in japan) so that might be something to take note as well.
Despite sales in the east Square Enix seems to be heavily supporting the Xbox One with Final Fantasy, One X enhancements for the XIII trilogy and soon the denfitve version of KH3, not to mention the ports next year of FF7, 9, 10, and 12. I’m thinking SE is realizing that there is plenty of maket in the West to justify Xbox support.
I doubt it was done for a problem that doesn't exist, but to help alleviate a known problem. (The issue being solo story instances being a massive bottleneck during the first couple of days of a newly released expansion and a massive influx of fair-weather players that are not normally present on the game.)
This; SE doesn't want Xbox players to be paying a double subscription to play the game - one for Xbox Live and one for Final Fantasy XIV. The last time it was openly talked about from SE, this was the reason given.
Depends on what you want to believe as pretty much everyone is talking out of their butt when they say anything about crossplatform play.
Sony is the one that doesn't want cross-play with other machines. See Fortnite.
Microsoft wants everyone to have Xbox Live to play multiplayer, period. You used to need Xbox Live just to watch Netflix on the Xbox 360, and quite frankly, I see the point when you don't want players to pay twice, the disconnect is that a game like Fortnite is not a MMORPG with a persistant world. (At least not as far as I've seen)
When you have a persistent world, you need to pay for access to that persistent world, because you're connecting to their servers. All Xbox Live, PSN, or Nintendo should be doing is passing the connection directly to SE and the friends-list sync needs to be done optionally. Because SE treats PS players as a separate license entirely, that's really a moot point. Where things get really annoying for FFXIV players is that they would have to pay for the game three times if they have an Xbox One, PS4 and a Windows system, where as with something like Fortnite, you only need to pay for it once.
To which I think SE needs to realize that a player should not have to pay for the game three times if they have three consoles/pc's. The easiest solution is to simply have a "sync your xbox live" and "sync your PSN account" step that can be done via the web browser, and then you can use your PC service account with the Xbox or Playstation systems, and when the subscription ends/expires it no longer syncs with Microsoft and Sony.
My opinion is that Microsoft has dropped the ball many times with Japan and will keep doing so, so there is no priority given to Japanese developers by Microsoft, and vice versa. Single Player games are a completely different thing. Sony meanwhile is a Japanese company and holds more sway with Japanese developers.
The aim with things like PSN and Xbox Live is "SaaS" or "Netflix-like" service where you can play everything with just one subscription. Which is fine until a developer doesn't want to play ball, and thus you get locked out of games where developers *cough*EA*Ubisoft*cough* want you to pay extra, to access what is basically a platform-agnostic server that is walled off to only work with one console, to keep each platforms weaknesses from infecting the other. So on one hand yes if you pay for Xbox Live or PSN, you shouldn't have to pay again for FFXIV, but if you're going to only play FFXIV you shouldn't need Xbox Live either.
There is no good resolution to this other than SE changing what they consider a subscription. If you pay for Xbox Live, but not XIV service itself, then you should only be able to create one character, on a server that is strictly bound to Xbox Live players operated by Microsoft (call this the Microsoft Data center.) If you pay for XIV service, but not Live, then you can play on any server BUT the Xbox server. If you pay for both, you can play on both. But anyone with any sense knows how pointless giving Microsoft their own server/datacenter is. Would Xbox support bring a million players to XIV? Probably not. It also goes against the design goals of FFXIV which is to allow anyone to play with anyone else, regardless of location and language.
I would consider a port to the Xbox One unlikely at this point. Sony just dropped the crossplay restrictions recently so any ports from SE would have started only a short time ago. For a game this huge that is unlikely. If they really do so (and only if MS drops the XBox Live requirements) then will happen for the next gen consoles. But I don't think so.
I don't think an XBOX version will ever come.
They are in "talks" for far too long and it got nowhere.
XIV on a new platform is major news worthy of a slide in the main presentation of XIV expansion features during the Fan Fest but this didn't happen.
So I doubt it will ever happen unless both Sony and MS get their organic wastes together and lift the limitations concerning cross play.
Well we need to remember that FFXI had no issues being a cross-play MMO back in the day so we can't say that Sony is at fault on this occasion. During the XB360 days Microsoft were the ones that didn't want cross-play with other consoles yet was fine with FFXI being an exception. So clearly MS are capable of cooperating if they want to, but how long it'll take for them to change their mind who knows.
It could be Sony not wanting to cross plattform with Xbox but i believe they are better on that recently.
It always in the past been Microsoft cause they require own hosted servers and Gold, Don't think they gone back on that yet if ever.
Devs and Yoshida himself talked about xbox version, the situation is about a missing agreement with Microsoft on terms and conditions for playing the game on the xbox. When it solves, we maybe will get the xbox.
I'm thinking the Nintendo switch version is more likely to happen than the xbox one...
Sony doesn't want to stop them. There's a few cross play games out there with pc ps4 game play some of them have been running for quite some time.
The underlying issue when it comes to ps4 / Xbox cross play is generally one of policing... and disagreements in policies. Microsoft have been known to be quite heavy handed in the past and they generally want the power to police games themselves. This is partly why ms insisted on Xbox only servers for 14. And weren't happy when yoshi said no.
The issue with cross play comes from disagreements in how conflicts are resolved. If Jack Xbox is harassing jill psn on James's game server. Who is responsible for the policing and resolution of such conflict.
One of the reasons sony has been reluctant to cross play with Xbox is because ms wants the power to police games it's players play. Sony doesn't want ms policing psn players and thinks it should be down to the game developers And until recently Microsoft has been reluctant to leave the policing to the game developers to handle.
Sony's recent change in stance on cross play is partly down to ms being a bit more lenient and agreeable with policing.
It's all on Microsoft cause they're adamant about not backing down about the Xbox Live requirements and sharing servers with their competition with Sony.
Also correct me if I'm wrong but I could have sworn I heard from somewhere SE was in talks with Nintendo about a possible Switch release.
They had talks, but nothing further than that as most of us don't believe that Switch's hardware would be capable of running XIV at max settings, not to mention you'd have to pay what...$50 or $80 for a functional controller to play XIV with. God knows, it ain't going to be with the original Switch controller.
Honestly it probably just has more to do with the massive popularity of Fortnite, and the previous backlash about not allowing Epic accounts to be synced between consoles. It's not like every other game opened up with cross-platform play as a result, it's just Fortnite.
But, that does set the precedent for individual titles to be capable of cross-platform play across all systems, so it can in fact be done. What remains to be seen is how many games are big enough to demand this privilege.
No offense, but I can't fathom anyone wanting to do a full job rotation, let's say DRG on this thing:

When they can use something far easier and probably more comfortable to grip like this thing.

I already have the former problem with the way my desk is set up. It's not designed for triple monitors at all. But, I'd do some of the lighter stuff myself on it if I had the Switch. Crafting and gathering. But let's face it, having the option there (if the console can handle the game without adding more limitations) would be great. Even if it isn't ideal. Plus, I believe Smash Ultimate is another game that'll require the pro controller that I believe you were hinting at for optimal play, if this game would also require it. But it'd definitely be playable even without the pro controller I'd say, from a controller standpoint.
I haven't played anything on Switch, but from what my friends say it's OTG setup is not that comfortable. I stream to my PS Vita occasionally but the controls are a bit wonky (like you have to use the rear touchpad to mimic R1/R3 and L1/L3) and overall it's not that comfortable, especially not for extended play. And my friends that said that about the Switch also added that the Vita was actually more comfortable. So, grains of salt for the Joycons. Playable? Sure. Enjoyable? Probably not so much
I'd say its a combination of Microsoft not playing nice with exclusive servers for xbox players and how poorly the Xbox as a brand does in Japan. There were times when even the Vita sold better than the Xbone and that says something. Though I think Xbox as a brand can never make it in Japan because they simply fail to understand that demographic. This generation just seems to exacerbate the whole, FPS, realistic monotone color palette for exclusives. PS4 goes from bloodborne to killzone to uncharted to horizone zero dawn and to gravity rush 2. Color and music is very important in a game and espeically to the Japanese but I'm afraid very few western developers understand that.
I dunno its literrally the same thing to me. I do own a PS4, but i use a xbox 360 like controller and i play on a 360 controller on PC, I do use my swich a lot too and tbh, i really wished i could at least stream FF14 to it and use the controller for stuff like eureka or crafting.
I do hate the PS layout, cant live with the stick in the middle and the D pad(?) on the left xD
Next gen consoles are going to start coming out at the end of next year. Maybe just wait till then so the game is more future proof. Give PS4 owners a free transfer over to PS5. Switch will just limit what this game can do in the future.
Do you have a source, because I've heard different when it relates to other games... I wish we could get some word from Yoshi-P, because if it is still on Microsoft, it would help to know where to go apply pressure. But for reference, ESO got an exception before it went Free to Play.
Its old, but I think Yoshi states it again at a interview before the 1st fan fest. But this article still has relevance due to Microsoft Online policies.
ESO is the only MMO on playstation that requires PS+ so you cannot use ESO as a representation.
