hi all,
I need some advice on my PC setup. i just got this nice monitor, the screen is crisp and clear, 1440p with 75Mhz. now my current CPU is i5-4460 , and GPU GTX 960 . i am considering upgrading my GPU to either 1060 3GB , or 1060 6GB or 1070 , i really dont want to spend too much .
my current situation:
8-man: I have to turn the settings down to standard (laptop) to see a decent frame rate.
housing area: there is a drop in frames in high(laptop), so i am forced to use standard(desktop) so i don't notice a frame drop.
my goal is to just have the game look better without dropping too many frames. the only other game i play is League of legends , and that one has no issues. so i am looking for an upgrade that just focuses on FFXIV.
can you share some similar setups for 1440p 75Mhz? and what worked for you? or recommend me something to buy.
I am really leaning towards the MSI 1060 3GB cause its so cheap, but some say the 6 GB version is better ( doh ), but i am not sure if FFXIV actually wiil need those 6GB?
MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GT OC 3GB GDDR5 << this is the cheapest option to go for @ 160$ in my local store.
MSI NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1060 GAMING X 6G GDDR5 > this will cost me 226$
finally this MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 ARMOR OC 8GB GDDR5 >> @ 276$

I also heard this game does need more CPU power the more people or objects in the screen to process, so my old i5-4460 might bottleneck, but i am gonna delay upgrading it maybe till next year. but if you got any advice on this, please feel free to tell me .
i just did a benchmark on 1440p and the result was very high, even though i could see drawing delays during the thing, and frames being dropped.

If you really want to upgrade your cpu then a i7-4790k should be more than good enough, buying a newer one would mean new mobo + new ram and other shenanigans, make sure you buy an okay aftermarket cooler tho, like a Noctua or a Scythe(cheaper option) because the 4790k runs very hot. -

The game itself is CPU heavy in crowded areas, the issue affecting you though is definitely your gpu not being able to push out 1440p which is a big increase from 1080p.
I'd consider at the very least replacing your GPU with a 1070 or higher. The 10 series should go down in price now with the new 20 series. You can look at comparable AMD cards as well. 1060, while not bad by any means, are a bit mixed. I think it could handle it, but its not the most future proof. If you do get the 1060 though, dont skimp on the VRAM. go for the 6Gb
I would also consider a new cpu in the future. But you don't have to go overkill. Go as high as your motherboard currently allows. But I'd definitely focus on a gpu first. -

I advise against buying second hand GPU's especially the higher end ones because most of these have been mined to death or close to at least.
Don't buy the 3Gb 1060 since you have a 1440Hz monitor, you'll want some more Vram. The 6Gb 1060 will work but especially on that res you won't be able to use full settings and will probably gonna sit around standard desktop settings if you want your FPS to match your 75Hz of your monitor.
If you can afford I'd say the 1070 that's a total 1080P killer and will do nicely on 1440P too. I'm actually waiting for the RTX 2070 that will launch later this year but that one might get quite expensive though.
I do not recommend an i7 4790K either, It's actually a beast of a CPU, I have one myself and overclocked but it's late 2018 now, it's 4 generations behind and most games don't utilize those 8 threadings anyhow, and has quite a high TDP as well.
Personally I'd say to get the I5-8xxx (the hexacore one) it's fairly new so you can wait a year like you already wanted to do, this one is cheaper then the i7's and does really match it's own. The I7's & I9's are better of course but they are also much more expensive and unless you're going full 4K gaming with high framerate and dual 1080ti's or something it's not really needed.
Do get an aftermarket cooler though, Noctua & Scythe are probably the best ones but coolers like the CRYORIG H7 for example are much cheaper and are also pretty nice and with those aftermarket coolers your CPU will never get hot unless you overclock the hell out of it but then you need to opt for water cooling for best performance.
Also make sure to get 16Gb ram.
So yeah GPU first and then next year or when you get some more money you can get a new mobo, cpu & memory. Do make sure your PSU will be able to power everything before you buy new parts. -

If you're playing Overwatch, a 900 series card can push 1440p60hz easy.
FFXIV is somewhere in the middle. A 1070 is probably sufficient. But it's close enough I'd want to search for benchmarks to be sure. -

thanks for all the input, now leaning towards MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 ARMOR OC 8GB GDDR5 , but gonna wait a little more, when the new 2xxx models are released maybe we get a little more discount, in a month or 2.

A 1080Ti is great. With my 1440p ultrawide and my I5820k overclocked to 4 GHz, I can run it on full settings with HBAO+ Quality and still get 65-80 fps. If I want more FPS, I can drop down to HBAO+ Standard or even Strong and get 80-95 and it runs smooth on both settings.
One question, are you running Discord? I literally just uninstalled it from my PC yesterday when I was noticing stuttering in both my graphics and popping/stuttering in my new sound card. As soon as that was gone, my framerate and sound issues went away. -

My 1070 hits 60 fps at 3440x1440 ultra wide in cities.
I turn it to standard in 8 man to avoid any frame drop.
Best bang for you buck right now is a 1070 ti. -

I have myself i5 8600k and pny gtx 1070 FE and I have average fps 66 with 1440p on maxed settings. If you want 75hz on maxed settings I would recommend buying 1070 ti for this game. Some games demand more like in monster hunter world my fps is only like 30 with maxed settings 1440p. 1080p resolution is way more safe choice if you wanna play every game with 60+ fps. 1440p need like twice better performance from your computer. But ofcourse you can always drop graphical settings, if it is needed.
