SkillSpeed on the Machinist Raid Weapon is a big joke.

Hello my dear friends from the Official Forums,

I don't post a lot, but when I do it's to complain about Machinist.

Since 4.0 Machinist has been living in the shadow of his brother Bard. Better Raiddps, more utility and around 4 times the amount of players that chose Bard over Machinist.

I was able to live with that. I was able to live with a Job that requires you to have less than 50 ping to be playable, where clipping is a daily issue, that some people lock out of party finder cause Bard is just so much better and on top of that, needs a dragoon and a ninja to actually reach it's potential.
The question really at this point is, why even bother?

The Design of MCH is lackluster, everyone knows it. I personally love the class but I feel like I'm the only one out there. (before anyone says "no you're not" , I know I'm not.)

Now this morning I woke up, expecting to read some datamined best in Slot sets just to really face horror itself.

Not only does Bard again have an insane Best in Slot set this tier, with Crit that scales into oblivion but also do they just slam Skillspeed, the most useless Stat Machinist can have, onto the Raid Weapon. Skillspeed is so bad for Machinist because we have no dot and we have tons of double weaving, so more Skillspeed equals more clipping.

Slamming Skillspeed on to the Raid weapon was probably the worst decision that was made. Whoever made it, is basically a Monkey. Any other class in this game profits more from skillspeed than Machinist does, yet we get it onto our Raid Weapon. According to calculations, the TOME Stone weapon is actually very close to the Raid weapon, which should never be the case.

Anyway, this post has a lot of Salt in it of course. I already know several Machinist players that will swap over to different jobs because with so much SKS Machinist becomes even less playable than it already is. I can just say, really bad bad job on the Stat distribution for this patch. Machinist will now be even less played than before, and it will get the prize for least played Job in 4.X.

Casters have been the same for weapons in general so far (have not looked at the latest weapons). Red Mage has had Spell Speed (which really does not have use) while blm which favours Spell Speed has had determination and DH over Spell Speed.
It's like they do not play their own game and do not listen to the community either

As for Machinist i cannot really comment about as have not played it enough but know from others about what you have mentioned and i know others feel the same way.

You want some amount of skillspeed to make the 6 GCD window on Overheat more forgiving. So long a the rest of the gear balances out favorably, it's not an awful situation

At least Determination does something. The only thing Skill Speed does for MCH is basically buff up AAs. I don't see how that is worse.

For the MCH you need to be at 2.42 (maybe more, but not less). If your gcd is under that, you will clip at every ogcd...
That's why I stop playing MCH.

It's not as bad as it looks to be for tanks, minimum I can see with raid weapon and 400 gear is about 900 skill speed. Which.. Isn't terrible but will cause clipping issues and likely be problematic for staying in line with raid buff windows. But it's basically a problem that shouldn't have been created. Good Job SE.

My apologies, I wasn't entirely clear. It wasn't just that Monk had Determination as the main stat twice in a row, but that Monk has had zero crit two tiers in a row and Determination as the main stat. Because Crit is Monk's mechanical stat, we need it for Deep Meditation procs for our throughput and neither weapon has any of it. It happening twice now.

The fact of the matter is, the devs seem to just use RNG to pick substats on raid-weapons. Sometimes you get burned because of it, Black Mage sometimes doesn't get skill speed, Healers sometimes get piety. You should be glad that you only got one bad stat as the secondary for one tier instead of it happening with both stats for two tiers.

Monk had a similar issue last tier and again this tier with the tomestone weapon being superior to the raid weapon.

Diamond weapon had Determination (garbage stat for monk) and skill speed. Tomestone weapon had crit and direct hit. This tier the raid weapon has direct hit and determination while the tomestone weapon has crit and skill speed.

Honestly I don't mind that the raid weapon is worse than the tomestone one since it frees up the coffer I get from running with my static to be used for another job's weapon. But I do understand why you'd be frustrated to have gone through all the work to clear savage only to have lesser potential rewards for your main job.

It's a MCH problem specifically. Like, if you have a bit of extra skill speed on pretty much any other job it doesn't completely wreck it's rotation. You have the weapon damage advantage as well so, all in all, skill/spellspeed 405 weapons are still probably stronger. But again it's the fact that skill speed specifically wrecks MCH core gameplay mechanics. It's not about damage at all, just how the job itself actually plays at high skill speed.

It's just a disconnect, as Speckled mentions, it's probably RNG that determines the stats. I'd like to think SE could find a spare 15 minutes every 6 months to review the stats a bit more rigorously and make sure the strongest weapons you get don't contradict the job's design. But alas..

I think 'wreck' is a harsh term. it certainly doesn't feel great, and large amounts of speed are negated by clipping, but Mach's double weaving really only occurs at one point, and it's usually at the start of the Overheat/Wildfire window.

But we aren't talking large amounts of speed. Rapid Fire locks the GCD at 1.5 so skillspeed doesn't muss this up, and having your next GCD delayed by the .1-.2 clip has effectively no bearing on the Wildfire/OVerheat window. Some of the benefit of Skillspeed is lost through Double weave clipping and Flamethrower, but not all of it, and again, -you still want some-.

The OH/Wildfire window is 10 seconds each, and you want 6 GCDs in each. Over 7 GCDs, 6 will be in overheat, 5 of them in wildfire, and the last one in the last bit of wildfire as a normal shot.

So in Overheat, you have to A) Start the GCD rolling ASAP. 10 second window, first GCD at 0. Next at 2.5, and then 5.0. Rapid Fire puts 3 in 4.5 seconds, meaning your 6 GCDs have a .5 window at 0 skillspeed. The same goes for Wildfire, as the two overlap.

Saying Skillspeed on the weapon is an insult is a bit overdramatic. Even the best of ping is reducing that .5 window at base speed to something like a .1-.2 margin for error.

Maybe 0 ping, 99thers don't worry about it, but I plan on picking up some skillspeed with the higher item budget this tier. I've cilpped that last cooldown far too many times.

All I can say is it does start to wreck your rotation. I didn't clear 08S on MCH specifically but I've done pretty much everything else with it (looks like you have too) and beyond 900 it gets really damn wonky. The main problem aside from window drifting is your GCD's get out of line with Reloads as well, you're building up heat faster but still waiting on the same 60-sec window. Can be dealt with by using Cooldown, but then you risk wasting GCD(s) on flamethrower for the extra ticks. The extra skill speed entirely goes to waste.

At the end of the day I don't main MCH, so tome weapon will be alright for it eventually. But doesn't take away the fact it's not necessarily something MCH mains are going to look forward to. You have to otherwise be some sort of BiS just to get to that minimal 900 skill speed w/ raid weapon.

I think the main point, as Fox mentioned, is that it's already an underplayed class. There's been complaint threads about MCH the entire expansion (though a weapon alone probably wouldn't change that). Maybe Bard is just the Warrior of DPS jobs, I don't know. It just seems to demonstrate a lack of foresight from SE. Could have been worse, I guess, could've been 356 skill speed instead of 249 lol.

I get this, my point in bringing up monk is that monks best secondary stats are critical hit first, skill speed second. So this tier to have a critical hit and skill speed weapon be the tomestone weapon is pretty much the same kind of disappointment when it comes to the raid weapon. Losing all of those secondary stats drastically impacts gameplay for a monk, likely in a similar, though maybe not as directly visible way, as getting too much of a stat on another job.

Either way, I still sympathize with the OP regarding the raid weapon being one that is bad for the job as my job is seeing the exact same thing this tier.

Yea, and I didn't mean to minimize the issue with other jobs.. It just feels like MCH is particularly sensitive given it's strict rotation. Like with tanks I can understand, OK maybe we were getting too much crit and they didn't want us to be able to keep stacking it. Sorta understandable I suppose. But DPS jobs are DPS jobs, the raid weapons *should* have the best DPS stats for that job regardless. You can swap out tome/raid gear pieces to adjust secondaries as needed, you can't swap out 405 weapons.

I think it'll end up fine.

Crit's already going to be absurd this tier. It's easy enough to end up with no skillspeed elsewhere.

I'm fairly certain weapons get their stats last, because wouldn't ya know it, the Machinist weapon's skillspeed is just enough to put someone in that comfortable zone once they avoid it almost everywhere else they can.

Oof. Seems like no one knows what exactly the issue with SKS is.

I wish I had one of my twitch clips explaining the issues with MCH that have been around since 4.X and why Skillspeed is the worst stat for any job in this game. Probably even worse than Piety on for Paladin.

The Machinist rotation's goal is to use Wildfire at exactly 60 seconds to line up with Trick Attack and other Party buffs. Take for example O6S (Sigma V2S) where you have 100% uptime. Depending on your SKS/Rotation you delay wildfire every time by 1-2 seconds, drifting further and further until you miss trick attack completely. Last tier we had a BiS GCD speed of 2.48 - a rotation called 65H ended up with a small amount of waiting after the last GCD to line up wildfire perfectly every rotation. Let's call those "Perfect rotation time". Now if you add one GCD to your rotation and end up at 70H you need a GCD speed of around 2.40 - 2.41 for this to be the "perfect rotation time". Yet, being at 2.40-2.41 GCD speed comes with other problems.

One of those is obviously Clipping. You will clip most OGCDs with that amount of skillspeed, not to mention Double Weaving. Your Reload outside of Wildfire needs to be either delayed or you clip your GCD. You'll also clip with Turret resummon after blowing him up and using QR there. Other noticeable clipping was for example dismantling First forsaken in o8s.

SKS's value besides buffing Auto attacks is close to 0. It can help with getting that last GCD into overheat window but I manage to do that on 2.50 GCD speed too.
To sum up : SKS will make you clip, not kill your rotation but just make you lose DPS overall instead of gaining DPS. We don't gain damage from DOTs neither, since we don't have any.

To give examples on how far we go with this is:

1) This tier Crafted Ring Pentamelded is better than the Savage Ring.
2) Last tier Pentamleded Belt was better than both 370 Belts.
3) Deltascape the 24 Man Headpiece was better than both 340 pieces.

This is all due to Skillspeed having no value at all for Machinist.

So yes, putting SKS onto the Raid weapon is bad, it's really bad. Calculations I made show that the difference inbetween the Raid weapon and Tome weapon are around 0.6% (with rotations kept in mind) with tome weapon being nearly as strong as the raid weapon this tier around. This has not happened since Creator. It is always supposed to be Raid wep>Tome weapon. There's basically no reward in clearing O12S for Machinist players this time around. Everyone is already talking about the Eureka Weapon probably being the best before Echo is even around.

The above linked Ariyala link is also wrong. I found out yesterday that the Crafted Ring is better.

I'm not very big on Math, I use provided Calculators by Lynn Nuvestrahl in the balance discord but go a lot myself by feelycraft. I've been playing MCH since 4.X and have cleared everything but Ucob (cleared on SMN) on Machinist. Currently in o11s progression.
I am probably part of the people that play Machinist the most worldwide and I have very good understanding of how the class plays and what's optimal on it.

Giving us SKS on the Raid Weapon was another bullet to the knee considering Bard is already the much stronger counterpart.

390 ring definitely makes it more palatable at 750ish speed, didn't consider that.. But crafted ring.. Hmm.. Doesn't seem like it could be that much better. Giving up 6 Dex 65 Direct 7 Crit for +139 Det... Well I guess even at a low stat weight the Det would still slightly outweigh it.. Interesting. Even compared to raid ring you're getting +247 substats for sacrificing 15 Dex.. Damn.

I myself won't be able to do that for a while since I have to take care of tank first.. But will probably do that later when I'm able to start running on MCH again.

Keep in mind that for you and me, it won't make a difference. Those two are the 99ther's to who these minute differences are a huge factor I mentioned. Not specifically, but that group. They are to Machinist what you are to Warrior, but taken up a few more notches :P

I think if skill speed can get down in that range it'll be fine. I did slightly prefer 700ish speed build to the 500ish I ran for a while. But if it was a situation where you have to carry 1000+ speed until you can achieve BiS it would be pretty sad. I did have a set with 900+ at one point and it was terrible for trying to stick to the standard rotation.

The math provided states the Tome Weapon is within a .6% margin (I'm not certain if you mean better or weaker, though the tone implies that the raid weapon is in favor here). That doesn't sound far off from most other tome-to-raid weapons, and probably about right from Raid-to-Ultimate.

My opinion is that this is making a mountain out of a molehill. With what you provided, I went and tested myself, as you are the machinist with greater expertise, and, as should be expected, you and the other provided not only correct information but information I can use to be better.

That's why I deferred. You are right; That Skillspeed isn't a harmless stat as I previously thought (A judgement colored from my time as Black Mage where speed is awesome). But I disagree with your sentiment that this is an insult, that somehow this screws over Machinist more in the end. I disagree here primarily because if you didn't have the skillspeed on the weapon, it'd probably be elsewhere that you wouldn't be able to avoid it, or would do so at some detriment to other stats, and my view on that is it your stats end up the same in the end, it doesn't really matter which piece had what to start with. That's a whole argument I had with Tank Accessories, and I'd rather not go through that song and dance again.

even more so if they let you customize stats + 5 slots
(but MCH has Crit + DH already so not much need to customize)

That is wrong again. Raid-to-Ultimate is correct since it's only an increase in Materia. Again you're just assuming.

Black Mage weapon goes from 146-> 147. About a .7% gain on weapon damage.
The intelligence difference is 4, which at i390 will be something like .125% more intelligence.
Basically all the substats on Black Mage are around the same weight though crit slightly pulls ahead at end tier levels, so the substat shift doesn't make a huge difference.

Using a basic comaprison of 147 x 1.00125 /146 x 1.0 and the result is 1.008. Or about a .8% increase in damage on average, though Criticals swing higher and lower, so your best runs look better but your worst runs look worse.

As for the second point, I already conceded. You wanted reasoning, and I gave it. In short, you convinced me the weapon is objectively statted bad, and falls into the camp of monk and healers this tier.

bumping since there has been no hotfix for this mistake yet.

Yesterday, I got all the stuff that aren't bis for mch (Collar, ring, boots, gloves) and so I decided to give a try by replacing the 380 crafted gloves, 390 boots, 380 crafted collar & 390 ring I had. (psa: My crafted aren't penta, outside of the bis crafted ring)

Bringing my GCD from 2.43 to 2.37, my dps was lower with four 400 items than with the other stuff I had. It's not even a "little" increase, it's just flat lower because of the horrible clipping.

That's probably how bad sks is for mch, it's not even making your dps the same, it's just an handicap that lower it.

I just think 2.22GCD is a good GCD too (I don't talk about people with high ping, sry). Yes that needs a lot of Sks but we can easily have it now at the end of this expansion.
Basically, we, MCH, want a perfect rotation of 60sec.
Rapid Fire makes 3 GCD to be 1.5sec. So 3*1.5 = 4.5sec.
60-4.5 = 55.5sec
55.5/25 = 2.22GCD exactly --> (the 25, is the number of GCD to use during the 55.5sec without Rapid Fire. So with the 3 GCD under Rapid Fire, it makes a total of 28GCD per minute instead of 25 or 26GCD iirc.

Here is an exemple of a 2.22GCD rotation (I'm not saying it's good, I mean there may be a way with that) :

Problem is that your double weaving will clip, making it worse and lose gcd in the end, delaying everything.

Unfortunately weird substats on omega weapons are not limited to MCH's. Almost all jobs have suboptimal substats on their 405 weapons. To be honest, it looks like a deliberate choice to convince raiders to do eureka in they want the true BiS.

The problem with SkS is multifold. You can't just look at a number that will get you 60s rotation because you need your entire kit to align. That means you need a GCD speed that will get you ~60s AND fit every single oGCD usage neatly between those GCDs. Assuming static rotation length, SkS does nothing for your oGCD damage due to oGCD cooldowns. It also does nothing for your turret damage, so you end up with extremely bad dps scaling.

In every single case, the rotations calculated in the 2.43-2.50 GCD range have performed the best. Adding SkS beyond that enters a range where clipping occurs and all gains from SkS are lost. Another well aligned range starts around ~2.38 gcd and below, but not only do you have to add GCDs in the weakest parts of the rotation (lockout), at that point you have also given up so many other better scaling stats that even if the rotation aligns well again, your damage is going to be very poor. It's entirely possible that there's another good GCD range at 2.22 GCD, but SkS is so inefficient at scaling MCH dps that it's not going to be worth it.

Unfortunately, it's long been speculated they simply use an algorithm to automate the sub stats on gear. Which makes sense, in theory. There just isn't much in the way of quality control hence why we see awful combinations. Let us never forget the Alexandrian Metal Guillotine and its duo useless stats in Skill Speed and Parry.

It is more likely substats are chosen in a direct counter to standard BIS. Unfortunately, substats aren't nearly interesting enough where shaking it up does anything but frustrate people.

The itemization in this game is built around simplicity, as is everything else. That's why we get 'potency' instead of damage ranges on tooltips, that's why we don't get the exact number that Critical/Det/etc work on without having some dedicated individuals do heavy number crunching.

"Higher" is "Better" in an overwhelming majority of the game. The small portion where it isn't is about the same percent as the amount of people who push and clear Savage tiers, and it's often based around breakpoints, CD alignment, or other nuances that, even in savage, you really just don't need.
