companion duration

Please answer a question before I file a report. Was this supposed to be active this patch? "The active duration of companions summoned with Gysahl Greens has been increased from 30 to 60 minutes." This is from the patch notes. Did I misread something. Thank You.

You have to use a second Gysahl Green to get from 30 to 60 minutes, just how you do with food.

Your chocobo can be summoned for 60 minutes now (mine is right now), but he demands that you feed him twice. You can use the second Gysahl Green right after you used to first one and the timer will go up to 60 minutes.

Then that post in the patch notes is misleading. Should have specified the double usage for the extended time. The way it reads now is you only need 1 green for 60 minutes. Thank you for the clarrification

I guess the actual core of the change is that you can renew the timer before it runs out. Previously you just got a "companion already summoned" message if you tried to use gysahl greens, even if you only had seconds left on the clock, and the chocobo had to leave or be dismissed so you could re-summon it.

That's a good change. It's just not what the patch note description sounded like it was.

The patch notes are never 100% accurate - I got used to taking them with a grain of salt. Specially in this case it doesnt seem like a big deal to me though...

Sorry this was not mildly inaccurate. It was completely misleading. This could have been avoided with a little better proof reading at he various steps involved in compiling and translating the notes. I know people think I am making a mountain out of a molehill but I don't care. If we continue to brush off things like this then SE will care less about quality in everything. It is human nature

It's all in the translation - remember we English speakers are playing this all second-hand (I refer you to the 'Lardboard' discussion). SE are Japanese - I don't think there's a Machiavellian plan to undermine part of their player base.

I dunno, when I read the patch notes I thought it sounded like it was the same thing they did for food...


Which it is, you can use another to increase the timer.

Is the message misleading? Yes, it is. Is the message being misleading, relevant, important, game breaking? Not at all.

Also, there is a difference between "The active duration of companions summoned with Gysahl Greens has been increased from 30 to 60 minutes" and "you can extend the duration of your companion by using an additional gyshal green to a maximum of 60 minutes".

Some people need to improve their reading comprehension skills for sure.

I don't think the message is misleading, actually. Worded in a way that could (and has been) misinterpreted but there's nothing wrong with the statement itself.

"The active duration of companions summoned with Gysahl Greens has been increased from 30 to 60 minutes."

The change has been made to the companions.

It makes no mention of a change to the properties of Gysahl Greens themselves. The item description says they have an item duration of 30 minutes.

It could be worded better, but the statement as-is does correctly describe the change.

It says that now, not before. The item description before 4.4 was:

There is no mention of a 30 minute duration there.

I was wondering when would you show up in this thread. And by you, I don't mean you personally, but the typical "smart guy" who would show up with a "smart" remark just to make himself look cool but in reality, is condescending and irrelevant.

Just to enlighten you a bit, this thread was started 3 days ago, when the original patch notes said "The active duration of companions summoned with Gysahl Greens has been increased from 30 to 60 minutes". That has been changed and it now reads "The active duration of companions summoned can now be increased up to a maximum of 60 minutes using Gysahl Greens."

My suggestion to you, "smart guy", is that before you make yourself look like a fool, get your facts straight.

Considering this has been going on since the game released, the either awful localisation or poor descriptions to start with(maybe a bit of both), I think my take still stands.

If poor description or localisations are bothering you (or anyone else), I can only advice you to leave a suggestion in the localisation section of the forum. I did so a few times in the german forum - both in regards to simple typos and to actual descriptions that I considerd unclear and most of these things got fixed (and those that didnt were kinda ambiguous to begin with).
Given the massive amount of text they're dealing with here - not only in one, but four languages, that need translating and checking - I can see how something minor like a note about our companion in the prelimenary patchnotes can fall through the cracks quite easly.
Personally, I dont see a real added value to them carefully proof-read something like patch notes - its really not the end of the world...

Dont make you look smart in this context but more like a rather... unsympathetic person. If something as minor and silly as an item-description isnt 100% accurate because who ever is translating is has only an excel-sheet and little context, thats totally forgiveable - leave a suggestion to change it in the localisations forum and they most likely will.

English might not be hard - videogame translation certainly is.

The members of the localization dept I have seen are not Japanese though and should know better when it comes to translations. And even if you hire people from Japan to translate into English, German or French they should be versed enough in the language they are translating to, where errors like we get shouldn't exist. Esp when the vast majority of their players are English speaking, more care should be taken, even in the minor details. This argument is just being an apologist for SE shenanigans.

Yet the in-game tooltip was correct from the first day of the patch for those who bothered to read it.

I, too, was confused when I first summoned my chocobo out of habit on patch day after only having read the patch notes. But when I looked at Summon action on the chocobo submenu, I saw:

So I had my answer within 30 seconds of summoning my chocobo. Considering the majority of players never read patch notes or at best skim them for targeted highlights, I'm glad they got it right where it counts from the start.

The thing about videogame translation is that its not so much translating but localisating, which comes with a whole lot of problems.
As far as I know they're doing at least the english translation "in house", with Koji keeping an eye on it, but that doesnt mean that everyone in the team working on those translations is familiar with every aspect of the game!

Translating video games comes with two problems:
1) You might not have the context of what you're translating - aka you dont know that the text you are working on is the one for gysahl greens that are used to someone a chocobo (whatever that is).
2) You are limited in characters - lets say you have an english game that you want to translate to german and you have a map in this game and a button to open the map. The button has space for those three characters - "Map". Now... the german word for map is... "Karte" - see the problem? At that point what do you do? Make up a new word? Leave out the vowels? Keep the "map"?

Both problems might not have applied 100% here - but again its also just a minor issue, one item under thousands of them, so its easy to see why someone might missed that line. Or no one thought of the need to have it now.
Bottomline: Its very, very easy for us to spot "obvious" mistakes and think "Oh god, who translated this nonsense?!" - we're seeing the texts in the right context, we dont need to worry about character limits or words with multiple meanings. We get to read the text need to funny little icons - not in an excel sheet.

So instead of making comments about how english isnt hard and mistakes like that shouldnt happen... have a bit compassion, specially when it comes to minor issues and let them hear your suggestions instead! ;D

Good for you. You seem to be a very thorough person and more power to you.

In my case, I don't need to be thorough with insignificant things like this, so I don't need to double check with other sources of information (in-game or outside of the game) when the patch notes provide all the information I need. The fact that the text for this was changed confirms what the OP stated: that it was misleading.

Seems like it's not so insignificant to you if you have to come to forums to complain.

Patch notes have never been 100% complete and 100% accurate in any MMO I've ever played. You should never rely on them alone. Guess you're learning something from this insignificant occurrence.

Since you are arguing with me just for the sake of arguing, I'll take my leave here, not before I state the following: I didn't come here to complain. I read the OP's post, I agreed with what he said to a certain extent (one of my previous posts mentioned that I found the text in the patch notes misleading but I also said that it was not important, not relevant and not game breaking). In other words, my argument was not about the mechanics of the change but rather the misleading information that confused some players (like the OP). I presented evidence that made my case crystal clear. However, since this is the Internet, I was expecting people like you and that other guy who made the "English is hard" smart remark so instead of getting involved in a stupid argument, I will conclude my participation in this thread now. I made no such comment, you are mistranslating my statement ;) All I said is if it is your job in a mega sized company like SE to be a translator, you should be proficient enough in said language to be able to translate it correctly or in a way that makes sense even with certain restrictions. It's a minor detail sure, but SE is not a start up or an indie studio so giving us a bunch of mistranslations, even in the minor things, isn't something that should happen as often as it does. They should hold themselves up to a higher standard than we do.

A few mistakes here and there are obviously going to happen. But it's really frequent and sometimes confusing. And the amount of apologists for SE and their consistent ball dropping on so many issues that are far more important that translations are not only getting worse but also exacerbates the problem because it allows SE to cut more and more corners. So if ppl don't hold them accountable for the small stuff, you cant expect them to give 100% on the big issues either, and vice versa.

All I am saying is if SE screws up, as they are doing, more and more often. You need to hold them accountable. Just like if they do good on something small or large you need to praise them. It's the only way for them to get better. It's gotta be a balance. There is nothing more detrimental to a company, series or team than fanboys and apologists.

Patch notes might be misleading but it says on the Gyshal Greens "Duration can be extended to 60m by offering multiple servings".

It isn't rocket surgery.
