My character came from Rune-Midgard after Hydaelyn winessed his ability to lay low the gods of his realm and his prowess over others... tho his eyes of the faithful are once again whole, he still bears the scar over his right eye where Samurai Specter tried to end his conquest of the Endless Tower with a last second Soul Destroyer...
My character was out picking up bodacious babes and while hitching a ride to Ul'dah some old guy started talking to him about aether and adventuring. People just keep hitting me up with things they need help with, and he's a helpful guy so he pitches in.
his true purpose has not changed however.
Hot. Fire. Ladies.
I worked as a janitor in The Great Gubal Library even tho I felt like I was smarter than most of the people that went there. Sometimes I would see an equation on a blackboard or half of an equation and I would figure it out for the lulz.
She is a Blank with no memory of the life before she was on the ship to Limsa. Becoming a adventurer was her only choice to learn more about the world and to find why she is in this world.
Leonard “Julian” Dusk was a pretty reclusive guy. He decided it was time to make some friends. For some reason he went to Limsa Lominsa instead of a closer town. He never knew he’d become some sort of hero.
TL,DR:
Duskwight dude. Parents were bandits and died in a botched ambush when he was about 15.
His young adult brother Gaspard took him to Gridania where he tried to make it as a member of the lancer's guild, hoping to live a honest life and quit stealing for good, but in spite of his skills the guild treated him as cannon fodder. He died when Hiver had barely made it into adulthood.
Fed up with their hatred for outsiders, and for his race in particular, Hiver decided to leave Gridania and worked odd jobs around La Noscea for a couple of years, trying to live a honest life as his brother had hoped. It became particularly rough after the calamity, so he became a freelance mercenary until his life returned on a good track, mostly thanks to the event of the main storyline.
I may or may not have written this draft when I was thinking of getting into roleplaying (and then gave up).
Aster was found as a baby by a troupe of traveling performers. The troupe tried to find the infant's real family, or at least provide her with one, but they ended up naming her, and Aster kept finding ways to return to them instead of staying at a random orphanage. She grew up with a love for both performances and helping others, but was unsure what to do with her own life, since being a permanent member of the troupe didn't feel right.
One day, someone who saw half of Aster's limited number of performances sent her a letter saying how they wished adventuring had more perks like Aster's performances, so she thought, "You know what? I'm going to travel the world and become an adventurer. Let's see what this brings me."
What Sari Sebari lacked in height he made up for in dreams and ambitions. Coming from a home where death and illness was all too prevalent, he came to Gridania in the hopes of becoming a Conjurer to learn how to cure the sick and better the lives of those who needed it. All these hopes were dashed against the rocks when he took up adventuring to make ends meet.
He took up the drink in order to cope with the sheer stress of keeping almost-suicidal Lancers and Archers alive, let alone the Marauders who would charge into clusters of ferocious wildlife equipped with nothing but a blade strapped to a pole and leather underwear for protection.
After a particularly dreadful day of keeping some adventurers of questionable intelligence out of the jaws of death he waddled out of the Carline Canopy, teetering on the edge of an alcohol-induced coma. He was so inebriated he could legally be classed as vodka. Sari Sebari was unable to walk straight and was edging dangerously closer and closer to the Jadeite Flood. Out of nowhere, a very faint "kupo" echoed through the forest and a very hard thud was felt by Sari Sebari. Whether this fluffy guardian made a conscious choice to spare this poor Lalafell or just accidentally smacked into him is unknown, but before he passed out he could barely make out the figure of a moogle hurriedly flapping away into the trees.
After waking up with a splitting headache and his robe stained by his own vomit, Sari Sebari vowed to not let his second chance go to waste. From that day on Sari Sebari would always wear moogle-themed attire as a tribute to that moogle who saved his life. He also snapped his wand in half and became a Thaumaturge because burning things alive was less stressful than keeping things alive.
Feral Savage (main) was quite literally raised by wolves. He’s loyal to a fault, uncompromising, outspoken and brash. He doesn’t know who put him on that carriage to Gridania that day, but if he ever finds them, he’ll rip out their intestines and use them as a jump rope.
I play on Mateus, which is an RP server. I'm a major roleplayer.
I'll keep it short... I got two characters. On a separate post, I'll do my alt. This one is about Meriz Goober, my main...
His parents are a little weird. They taught him that there is a God BEYOND what Eorzeans worship, BEYOND the Ascians' "one true god". This God of theirs is simply called... God... He had spoken to Meriz in dreams and Meriz draws strength from Him...
Here's the thing, I'm a devoted Christian in real life and I want my character to reflect who I am. Which is why I invented an "ex" God, outside of the twelve. lol.
Stormfur was found as a mi’qitten by a noble knight during a raging snowstorm in Northern Coerthas. That knight’s name was Gremagne. Upon arriving in Eorzea, the registrar misheard Stormfur’s last name, and Greymane he became. Although he was raised by a noble, he shuns extreme shows of wealth and opulence, instead preferring to demonstrate his worth and cement his place in the world through his heroic deeds rather than just talking about them.
Trained to follow his caretaker’s footsteps, Stormfur became a paladin. He was raised on stories of The Fury, chivalry and courage so he holds these values near and dear to his heart. He abhors injustice and vehemently fights against the mistreatment of the downtrodden. Despite his considerable work toward brokering peace in Coerthas, his adoptive father disowned him after Stormfur elected to side with the dragons, seen as an affront to his fellow man.
My character is the daughter of an Ishgardian knight, who was relieved of duty do to injuries, and a gridanian womon, who makes potions. At a young age my character tended to wander about filled with wanderlust, always wanting to see what's past those trees, over that hill, down that river, just anywhere and everywhere. Her father taught her what he could of the sword, and her mother taught her many other useful skills, and at age (15, she's from a medieval-ish setting) she set out to be an adventure. Growing up to stories of knights and Ishgard she fancies herself a "knight" and will fight for her two homes and justice when and where she can. However, having a commoners upbringing, she is not skilled at more complex things, like magiteck(?) and politics, so she doesn't enjoy having to do so, ever.
"I am the blade of this world, where there is clear evil, I will slay it. But I am not it's voice, when words are needed, that is another's role to play." She will often say.
A shy mage who was asked to help heal one day. Nahla with a bit of reluctance agreed with the hope of learning more about herself.
Place of birth: unknown
Family: Orphan left on the door step of Whitemage
Occupation: Craftswoman "Artisan"
Hobby: Divination of Arcana cards
Likes: naps, tea, cakes, reading, fine clothes, healing, (no particular order)
Dislikes: long queues, coffee, ugly glams (no particular order)
My cat is on a quest for world domination and has this obsession to try and challenge almost anything he sees. Even if it means he'll get his butt kicked. He's also a treasure hunter with terrible luck and a cracked cluster addict. Despite his various attempts at riches and world domination, he is the poorest cat in Eorzea, just scraping by. World domination is an expensive campaign. xD
Senah's family is pretty typical for Khas: they live on the outskirts of Xaela land and seek out contact with non Auri peoples. In fact, Senah grew up in a poly household with an Au Ra mother, an Au Ra father, and a Keeper of the Moon Mi'qote father, hence her first name following Keeper conventions rather than Xaela conventions. Her family makes a living running a zoo and taming certain beasts to make them battle companions (which is how Senah has a pet panther, among other things). Senah left her home to explore more of the world and see what other kind of creatures exist.
Ameme, born somewhere in the south sea isles, was found as an orphaned toddler by a Lalafellin couple who proceeded to raise her as their own. Being a Hyur, she was instantly taller than her entire family.
Though her family is pacifistic, Ameme has always been a scrappy sort and naturally gravitated towards being a marauder after a chance encounter with a very lost pirate ship, where she first beheld giant men and women wielding two-handed axes. As she has always been the biggest in her family, she has absolutely no sense that she is a petite Midlander Hyur woman and will happily take on opponents many times her size. She just sort of fell into adventuring when she reached Limsa Lominsa, since that seemed more interesting than living in one place.
Occasionally she writes home, but the topic of how the latest batch of lentils are doing bores her to tears. Her family finds her tales hilarious and often sit around the dinner table taking turns reading her letters aloud.
He is just a random Xaela adventurer with social anxiety that only wanted to see the world but just couldn't say no to people and things really got out of control.
Bi-polar tank (Pld - good moods/Drk - every other mood)
Takes care of Chocobo
Never goes anywhere without his chocobo suit
Often isn't where people thought he was and will just show up out of random
Likes the colours Blue, and Chocobo
Collects music to try to silence the earworm he has and if often heard humming songs he's heard at any point in his adventures
I was kicked out of the house and was on my way to sell my body to Ul'dah, but some old man got in my way so...
I'm also Christian so I absolutely understand that, but I also think that it makes more sense to try to find the 'equivalent' of God within the story, rather than try to insert Him directly into another universe's fictional pantheon - and indeed we have Hydaelyn, goddess of light above the Twelve, loving guardian of all creation, who addresses us as Her "beloved child". Unless we get some kind of shocking twist as to Her nature later on, She very much is the God-equivalent of this world, who speaks to us and gives us strength to overcome the darkness.
(Also I'm not certain that the average person is aware of the Ascians or their 'true god', to be able to preach of a God beyond it? But I could be wrong there.)

How Gralna Kelgor Came to Eorzea
The dragon Gjalpinulva had been ravaging the realm of Midgard for years. In a final act of desperation, the peoples of Midgard had banded together in a final alliance to rid the realm of this menace.
Among them, was a Savage, Gralna Kelgor. She wasn't imposing at first sight, almost an average looking Valkyn. Her rusty auburn hair, and a furrowed brow accenting her features. Her eyes though told her tale, their golden yellow held the depth of her many struggles.
As the alliance approached the dragons lair, Gjalpinulva dove upon them. Though many were lost, they had managed to drive her back. It was in this desperation that Gjalpinulva sealed the fate of Midgard. She threw her head back and howled to the heavens. Gjalpinulva had summoned her fellow dragons from the realms of Albion and Hibernia, Golestandt and Cuuldurach.
In no time the trio of dragons had decimated the alliance until only a single soul remained, Gralna Kelgor. Knowing the battle was lost, she firmly grasped her teleportation stone and began to channel its magics. Seeing their prey attempting escape, all three dragons unleashed the might of breath attacks upon her.
The mighty attacks clashed with the aura of magic that surrounded Gralna. Creating an orb of impenetrable light that surrounded her. Under the force of such destructive might, the stone began to vibrant violently, it's magics beginning to unravel. Knowing her life depended on the stones success, she poured every ounce of her being into the spell.
In a final violent explosion, the stone shattered and the magical orb exploded with such force it threw the mighty beasts back. No sign of Gralna was in the remains of the destruction. Thinking their prey obliterated, the dragons returned to their lands.
Gralna however had not perished, in the last instant of the explosion, the stone had teleported her. She groggily began to shake the darkness from her vision, only to hear the sound of... a wagon? As she opened her eyes the first thing she saw was her hand, larger and devoid of claws. In a panic she examined herself to find she was taller now. She also was much more muscular, though now devoid of all the bestial traits of her valkyn heritage. Then at last she touched her face and felt a scar running over her left eye. A remnant of the explosion, as the stone shattered a fragment had sliced across her face and eye.
Finally looking across from her, she spotted 3 others in the wagon with her, two elven children. Next to them, a man in a strange turban and with a yellow beard. He casually gazed upon her and said, "Y'all right, lass?"
My character's ancestor was a Lilty from Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles from the village of Tida. While exploring the world for myrrh, he came across the ??? element miasma stream at the far end of the continent. Attempting to traverse the stream, the crystal in his chalice was rejected and reacted violently pushing him off of the narrow pathway and into the churning miasma below. Clinging to the chalice as he fell, the myrrh he had collected began to shimmer. In a blinding flash of light it burst from the chalice and enveloped him, stealing him away from his world and flinging him far across the aetherial sea.
He awoke on the shores of a distant land in a distant world called Hydaelyn. He went on many adventures in search of a passage back to the Vale of Alfitaria, but was unable to find a way home. However, he did find happiness. Having met a beautiful Lalafell he would call his wife, he settled down and started a family.
She often said he resembled an onion and took to calling him Shallot, a name he eventually took as his own, as well as the last name Liltian to honor his people who he would never see again. Given his appearance and fierceness with a spear, some even took to calling him the Onion Knight!

Generations later, a young Lalafell is born and named after his great grandfather, Shallot. As he grew he became fascinated by the tales and adventures of his ancestor. He would eventually set out on his own adventure to find the fabled Vale of Alfitaria and discover what it takes to truly be an Onion Knight, just like him.

Lyland was born in one of the islands of the Ciedalaes archipelago.
His home village is an outpost and safe harbour for the Maelstrom and passing ships. The village was virtually destroyed by the tsunami summoned by Leviathan, the same disaster that wrecked much of western La Noscea.
His teacher and guardian, a retired roegadyn arcanist, was among those killed in the tidal wave. The survivors eventually managed to rebuild their homes. Lyland subsequently left home to further his studies in arcanima, in Limsa Lominsa.
She's a cat from the moon.
And no, she's not a whaler either.
I think of my character as being a Tumet from a family of artisans who didn't pass her coming of age rite and was thus never given a Xaela name, her forename instead being bestowed upon her by a Midlander hunter from Clan Centurio who saved her and took her in after she expressed an unwillingness to reside with a tribe other then her famiy's. Her surname is one she playfully adopted on a whim after some over-imaginative children mistook her for a dragon from a Sea Wolf fairy tale.
She vowed to become a woman of such merit that her tribe would welcome her with open arms when she returned to them, deciding to hone her skills as a hunter in Eorzea, along with a side of handiwork to make sure her parents wouldn't be disappointed in her. The whole Warrior of Light thing and becoming the current khagan of the steppe just ended up being significant extras on her resume.
Powerful Lalafellin mage. High arrange of spells, and they have a lot of potency behind him, specially for his young age.
But blocked by difficult control and fear of injuring his friends. Which has happened (Rip First Friend, turned to ash. Woopsie.)
Don't hang me.
I haven't really come up with something very detailed cuz when I made him, we didn't really know much about Ala Mhigo (back when the game first came out), but mine is from the Ala Mhigo area from an independent warrior tribe. Granted, his name doesn't suit that cuz I had no idea about FFXIV lore when I first joined, I just knew Ala Mhigo peeps were taking refuge at Ul'dah at the time. Maybe one day I'll change his name and expand on his backstory thanks to this SB expansion but I've gotten a little attached to people calling me "Riffraff." XD
In principle, a role-play character should be separate from the player's actual identity and beliefs, in the same way the different roles played by a movie or TV actor are not actual representations of the actor's beliefs and personality.
In practice, of course, it's not always the case. I'd be lying if I claimed my character didn't end up being some version of me in real life, despite my best efforts at imagining him as his own person.
I'm curious, though, about how you're internalising the broader themes that define this world's cosmology, because it is, in fact, very different in philosophy and motivation from Judeo-Christian monotheism. This is a potentially sensitive topic, so I'd kindly request that all posters to keep replies civil.
The key point is that FFXIV emphasises the need for balance. Too much light or darkness is not good, either way. The two concepts may be in conflict, but they are also co-dependent.
As a rouge, Jira tried her best to stick out and prevail as a hero but to no avail. With the champion after champion proving much stronger and reliable than her and better equid, she decided she was no longer needed and set sail to Gridania and learned the ways of Archery
After the events of A realm reborn, she later left behind her Bow in Uldah and picked up a toolbox and a musketoon
The rest is history...
Anloix Etiegeant was the only child of a Dzemael servant girl and a mysterious, but loving man who shortly disappeared after Anloix's birth. Rightfully paranoid that she would lose her child to the same unspeakable fate she lost her husband to, Anloix's mother fled to the South Shroud where she holed the two of them up in a cave for 19 years. Anloix would have lived out the rest of life in the cave with his mother if it were not for a young Miqo'te lass who he quickly became friends with and subsequently ran away with (much to his mother's horror).
Now the two live in Limsa, both learning about the hardships of the real world away from their families and the truth behind Anloix's father's death and his mother's feverish paranoia.
Duh duh dunnn.
Smartass, foul mouthed desk jockey vying for a cushy job that accidentally fell into the role of a hero. Eventually switched gears and now happily mows down whatever is in his way because he drank the kool-aid and believes the hype. Currently nursing his fragile ego after certain events and considering just using his clout and position to tell others to fight things.
A Doman refugee who ends up training under a Warrior of Light, only to have her die during the coup in Ul'dah and leaving him with near crippling survivor's guilt and her soul crystal, so he abandons his name/'self' to take her name/how he perceives her 'self' in order for her to 'live'. He gets better after HW.
My character is speculated to not even be human at all, but a Lunarian. For those who don't know, Lunarians in FF lore are a race of humanoids that reside on the moon. They are far more civilized and advanced than humans. They look like regular humans with the exception of their light colored hair (typically white or platinum). My character actually dyes her hair because she dislikes it's "lack of warmth" as she would call it.
Gemina is an orphan. She was found by a dragoon knight in the hills of Sohm Al. Two deceased dragons appeared to have been caring for her. These two dragons had no visible mortal wounds, and despite the heat of Mourn, the area surrounding Gemina and the Dragons was quite cold. Confounded, and compelled by her gem-like lavender eyes, the dragoon took the infant child to Coerthas and began to raise her as his own and named her Gemina Lunarian. He was impressed by her magical prowess so young without having been tutored by any schools or disciplines.
Before his passing, Gemina's adoptive father told her all he knew about the Lunarians, how she was found, and that a darkness in her was the likely cause to the death's of the two dragons that he found caring for her and feared it could bring about the next umbral calamity. He advised her to seek out the city-state of Gridania, and the conjurers there would continue her tutelage far better than he.
Technically the forum code is a lot less than 1k characters. And I made this ages ago and cba to condense :P

Sorry I didn't reply to you on this earlier. I wrote most of a response but then the page crashed, and then I got caught up in the new patch discussions and forgot to come back to this.
I think we're approaching the question from very different angles. As far as I'm concerned, it's a fantasy world completely separate from our own, so we start from scratch. It has its own cosmology and there's nothing 'wrong' with God-as-we-know-Him not existing in it.
The reason we wouldn't worship an Earth-mother-goddess isn't because it's an Earth-mother-goddess or because it's something that other religions worship (otherwise we're in trouble because other real-world religions do have a similar concept of God to us), but simply because she isn't God.
However, in the game's fictional universe, the Earth-mother *is* a real goddess (or something like one) that our character has seen and spoken with.
If you try to put the Christian God - who does not co-exist with other 'good' gods - into this universe, what does that make Hydaelyn and Her blessing upon our character? Why is She the one addressing us as her beloved child?
It seems much simpler to accept what is presented to us in-game, than try to rewrite it to fit God where there is no space for Him to be. Hydaelyn takes the role that He would have if He existed in this universe, even if her exact form and the scope of her power is different. And if you have to compromise what God is and does to make Him fit within the game's universe, then is it even still Him?
Of course most Eorzeans don't worship Hydaelyn herself, but the Twelve (who the game hints may or may not actually be real, but people believe that they are). I have no issue with the idea of my characters praying to these lesser gods, because it's what they know. I feel like the parallel is more about the intent than the exact form of the gods? So whether my characters are praying to Thaliak for wisdom, or to Oschon for a safe journey, or giving thanks to Nophica, it's all some form of prayer to [a god] and they do it with the same intent that I would have in praying to God for any of those things.
You could still consider us learning of Hydaelyn as "a higher true god beyond the Twelve" as part of your narrative, if you want to look at it that way?
Ikigai Mol was born to an Orinir woman, and a Mol man. He had a pleasant time growing up in the steppe fields with his siblings, but was unfortunately kidknapped by the Buduga when he was fourteen years old. He had been returned to the tribe due to Interference, and rescue at the age of 17. When he returned he had reached the conclusion that he was homosexual, though a bit put off by the way the Buduga treated him.
He prayed to Nhaama, and asked for guidance. She told him to travel the world, and learn about all things. The journey was meant to strengthen, and heal his suffering. He managed to find his way to Ishgard, she join the ranks of Astrology due to his natural ability to see the future as a mol.
It’s a bit dark, but I have had a rough life outside the game, and roleplaying helps with that.
Born and raised in Gridania to a conjurer mother (who is a descendant of an Amdapori White Mage) and a thaumaturge father (who is a descendant of a Mhachi Black Mage). She grew up learning conjury but grew tired with it and when she was old enough traveled to Limsa Lominsa to learn arcanium, then eventually went to Ul'Dah to learn thaumaturgy. after completing her training in both she returned to Gridania and became an adventure to satiate the feeling of trying to find her true purpose... while getting caught up in grand adventures that took her to all corners of Eorzea.
In here travels she met an old sun seeker Mi'qote in flamboyant red garb, helped him out with dealing with some rogue thamaturges, all the while learning how to use a rapier and magic focus, awakening the something that she's been searching for.
