The entire glamour system is a mess

I am a huge fan of Glamour. I love collecting appearances and being able to change my armour and weapons often. However, the current glamour system is a convoluted mess of complexity. I won't debate on if this is good or bad design, but rather propose a much simpler and streamlined solution.

Glamour Collection
Instead of another inventory space where we drop our items into, Glamour Dresser would become our Glamour Collection. Any items dropped into the Dresser would be usable for glamour at any time anywhere as regular glamour. The 200 item limit should be lifted, as it makes no sense.

Glamour Sets
Instead of a simple collection of items split by slot, the Glamour Dresser would feature set icons, with a 0/5 on them (or 0/6, 0/10, 0/12 depending on how many pieces each set has), and categorized by type, such as Crafting, Job, Dungeon, etc... Clicking on these would open a small window that shows each individual piece of that set. Players can preview each item regardless if they have it or not, they can also preview the set itself to see all items at once. All items start greyed out, and players can put items into the Dresser to fill these out.

Cast Glamour
Items can be set to Favorites individually, or entire sets at once. These would appear at the top of the list when choosing an item in Cast Glamour. Players can also choose to Hide Items to drop them to the bottom of the list. Cast Glamour should also let players sort items by lvl, by name, by quality, by rarity and dyeability. Players can also apply an entire set at once (with the respective cost of Prisms).

Achievements
Collecting full sets will also grant new achievements, for example: collecting all dungeon sets in ARR will grant "Nothing to Wear: Dungeons"

Conclusion
The Glamour Dresser should act as a collection of all glamour we collect, for its use at any time for regular use of Cast Glamour on our items. The current system is very clunky and does not promote more use of Glamour, many players feel anxious in destroying their glamour items that can only be accessed from the Dresser in an inn room. Giving players the freedom to collect the game's appearances and using them should be the primary mission, as collecting all glamours is impossible due to inventory limits - the Glamour Dresser would solve this problem by allowing us to collect everything.

Glamour Sets, please become a thing.

SE, please just copy WoW's system. They did it perfect already.

I agree the wow system is by far the best
However I think there's a reason they have so much trouble with inventory space and whatnot, (which is odd considering most player have 1 character).
I wonder how they codes that but it seems to be both troublesome to change and terribly in effective when it comes to data processing between server and client

From what I understand they sync your entire inventory with the server every few seconds - even if you are just walking around with the inventory closed.
This means that any increase in inventory space will result in increased server load.

Do not ask me why it was been coded like this. To me it sounds horribly inefficient.
Apparently one of the many problems inherited from 1.0

Likely because they sync your entire character data to lodestone, which to me is a completely useless (and unnecessary) feature.

As someone who's never played wow I can't compare but this glamour system would be a great fix to what we have now though.

I am all for whatever just no achievements........ this is me being entirely selfish since I alone find glamour in general to be meh. But I can see the appeal of having an achievement for those who enjoy it. But my OCD about achievements I would have to do it.

Can't they just update your character when you log off...

Backups that frequent is to prevent data loss if say the servers crash you don't lose any of the work you've done. Yeah sounds like an enormous amount of data processing to keep making copies of all the character data, all the time, but have to just to be safe.

Well shouldn't the server simply update when you actually do something instead of constantly even when you're doing nothing?

I want a glamour log/book/whatever just something where everything I've unlocked is safe, can't be destroyed and is usable.

I'm not a NOC person but there's some added complexity in determining what counts as "doing something" - save on every item added to inventory? Save on every currency transaction? Save when items leave? In the end, from a programming standpoint, it might be easier to simply save it all in set intervals since people tend to "do something" with their inventories quite frequently, even if passively (kill a monster, get some loot for example).

SE are the God Kings of over-engineering due to compromises though. Holy heck the dresser system is a mess. Sometimes I wonder if it might be more worth their while to re-build the huge pain points from the ground up instead of constantly trying to wrestle something resembling the intended functionality out of them. Can't build a proper dresser out of spaghetti after all.

You understand incorrectly. The game retrieves your inventory from the server every time you enter a zone. I know this because I once had an soul crystal "disappear" from my local inventory when swapping between two gear sets too quickly. I was able to restore my inventory by simply teleporting back into the same zone I was in.

That's a weird one.

I think what they were saying though is the game sends your entire character dataset to the server every 15 seconds or so. And they said this because SE said this a few years ago when they were inventing excuses for not increasing inventory sizes.

Glamour system is nice thing to have but all online games have finite data storage sets they could spare for each player.
Glamour sets is definitely an awesome idea... except that it's basically Armoire on steroids, the very system FFXIV dev teams already have big problem with.

Considering these issues, I doubt this idea was even remotely tenable to be patched into the game. You don't take an an overpopulated island nation and use your finite budget to fill it with even more NEETs to feed, or would you?

I'm no coder, but it seems to me that if they used a log type of system, where you didn't actually have an item, it would take up a lot less space, no? A simple check of have they obtained this item - yes/no - if yes they can glamour it.

That would take up less space, yes. It depends on how their database and client/server architecture is set up to determine if that makes any difference though.
