The Praetorium (omg spoilers)

So just did MSQ Roulette and got Praetorium.

SE I have some gripes with you over this place.

First of all, only the last part of the cut scenes are voice acted. You're tearing my immersion up flip flopping around with sound and no sound. You need to fix this ASAP and finish voice acting the rest of the scenes I gotta watch. And no cutting the audio in the latter scenes isn't acceptable. If I have to watch them, they better all have voice acting, if I wanted to read I'd grab a book.

2nd gripe, seriously, what were you thinking with the first colossus boss scene walking in? In the cs he clearly walks in behind the group when we first encounter Gaius and yet when the scene ends he's not behind us but in front of us. Was it really too hard to have it make sense and have the guy come into the room via the lift if he's going to be in front of the group? Please redo this scene ASAP and fix this and stop breaking my fun and immersion, thanks.

3rd gripe having stewed on it for a bit now. Where is the sense of urgency and drama? Specifically with Gaius. We just stand there and let him monologue. We just let him walk to Ultima and board it. He doesn't even try and stop us from following him. With the Nero monologue I mean ok, we let him and Cid have a moment before we started beating on each other, but nothing like that was going on with Gaius later on. We weren't interacting with him, nor was an ally. We just stood there and let him boot up and board his mighty Ultima weapon while he jabbered on.

Their needs to be some interaction between the warrior of light and Gaius to justify this. Further more adding a fight to get thru the door and to Gaius before he can activate Ultima would make sense and provide a moment of drama. I'm sorry but simply opening the door we just let him walk thru does not provide that.

Finally some legitimate criticism. :D

I muted the character voices long ago - primarily to stop hearing myself in battle, but I always found it a little jarring when the game switched between silent and voiced cutscenes. So I’ve never seen those cutscenes with voices on, but assumed they must be fully voice-acted - plenty of other scenes are! Why would they do that?

They honestly should just revoice all of ARR. There are too many non-voiced cutscenes and the change between voice actors is noticeable for some of the characters.

The dungeons are pretty badly designed even if you ignore all the other issues. The only solace you can take is that they learned from it for subsequent dungeons.

There is a legitimate reason why only some cutscenes have full voice acting and some don't. The times there is no voice acting is usually when NPCs are identifying your character by whatever name you chose for them. This is not possible with fully voiced cutscenes so for those times your character is usually referred to by some default boilerplate title ('the adventurer', 'the Champion', 'Bringer of Light', 'the Warrior of Light' etc) and thus the scene loses the personalized effect when it has voice acting.

This is why in games such as Mass Effect or The Old Republic the player character has more of a backstory including either being given a default name and ignores the player's chosen name in cutscenes, or only allowing you to choose a partial personalized name with the other half (like a family name) a default name that you cannot change (like Commander Shepherd in Mass Effect, you can change Shep's first name but they will always be identified as 'Shepherd' in cutscenes.).

For FFXIV however, SE however went back to their roots and allowed the player to choose both their names completely by having the player character virtually a blank slate, just like the original FF game (which also had a party of generic no-name characters only identified by their Job class). Thus, this limits voice acting to key scenes, and accordingly your character is only identified by default titles in those scenes. It's a design choice.

Yes voice acting costs money. Everything created and produced costs money to make happen in the game. What's your point?

Mine in part was that if I'm going to have to watch this dungeons cut scenes from start to finish Every. Single. Time. The polish needs to be brought up to a higher standards.

In comics as cited in your link the action is very limited. Most of the intereactions are actually left up to your minds eye to interpret. It's a fair bit more acceptable for it to happen in that format than say this game or even a TV show. Even in TV shows the bad guys pretty much only monologue when they're either out of harms way and untouchable or have the "hero" beaten and on the ropes.

Gaius is standing right there in front of us just fine like we are, and we just let him drone on and do his thing without any interaction on our part or an allies. It's a crappily applied trope that makes the experience not very enjoyable.

They could just as easily sub in Warrior of light like they usually do just fine.

They could still fully voice act everything if they just had the character always verbally referred to as warrior of light or whatever, and in the text it could still say your name. Years ago I played another mmo that was fully voice acted that did this. IMO referring to the player character by name isn’t a good enough excuse to have less voice acting.

They have tons of VA in HW/SB and even ARR and they manage to do this by never referring to the character's name. They could alter the script slightly to "you" or "the warrior of light" or other forms of indirect communicaton - which is exactly what they do in the cutscenes that DO have VA.

So that's not a good excuse. The cost is a good excuse (though one I think would be worth it, but I'm not exactly head of SE's budgeting and development), but not the names because that's easy enough to overcome without doing your ridiculous set up of trying out each name.

The point is that VAing everything is something that would have put them over budget, therefore they didn't do it.

You saying "well, everything ELSE cost money too!" is irrelevant. Point is, some things had to be sacrificed, and this was one of the things they felt could be sacrificed. Deal.

If you're expecting all of 2.x to get revoiced, you're deluding yourself.

You have no proof of that but thanks for playing. Your argument was before the changes were even put in, and assuming that everyone else would think like you. You don't speak for everyone else, and you don't know what the final outcome will be. And there were multiple threads created on the first page, cluttering up the entire General Forum subsection. I guess any expectations bar higher than ankle height for grasping simple concepts, is too much for many on here. Good to know.

So, I just ran it with 5 sprouts. The cutscenes took longer than the actual fights. Sprouts were mostly quiet, taking it all in. Meanwhile 3 of us mystery science theater the crap out of the CS. If you're new and friends who've done it before run it with you, it's more special and meaningful since they're gonna sit thru them cutscenes with you to see you progress in the story. It's possible the queue times would go back to the way they were before but at least this time no one can ruin someone else's experience anymore. Maybe queue times get so bad they'd have to sweeten the pot more for vets to help out. Who knows?

Preatorium is still from 2.0, where it was still not sure how good the game will run after the failed 1.0. The amount of players at 2.0 launch surprised the devs.
So they have not voiced many quests. Only with 2.2 they started to voice more and more (but not quests that are already ingame)

LOL dat hyperbole mate.

I'm not asking them to redo all of 2.0 and voice act it all. I was saying they need to make these scenes that we have to watch and can't skip voice acted. Their budget at the time might not have allotted for it but it certainly doesn't mean they can't still do it now. We all pay our fees to play the game, and many of us chuck even more money their way via the mogstation. They can find the money to do it and they should. They obviously want us all doing those dungeons to see these scenes in their entirety, every time. It's only right they're properly well done now that the option to skip them is gone.

And if you're not doing them anymore, why do you care? You're boggling my mind there.

So happy that those 2 dungeons don't have Alphinaud in them for all those complaining about the lack of 100% VA in the cs's. I think ppl would murder him and hide his body somewhere if that were the case.

To help out more than once in a while the mentor would have to be VERY altruistic to put up with the cutscenes now. I'm normally happy to help out but will no longer be running this roullete until cutscenes become skippable. there's too damn many and theyre way too long. it's not epic and fun after the 3rd or 5th time, and definitely not the 30th time.

I definitely agree that with this dev team, it's never going to happen. But I'm really tired of hearing about budget issues for their server architecture, voice acting, content development, etc. I am fully aware that they have a budget they have to work within, but that's not an excuse. EQ2 for instance added voice acting to EVERY npc in the game as an optional download and let me assure you they had WAY less revenue than FFXIV does. Hell, they also made it so you can have some ridiculous amount of houses. Like 30 of them per character.

LotRO added voice chat into their client. Housing districts like what we have here would automatically add on when one got full so that we could continue to buy houses.

This idea that a game created fterward with WAY more revenue can't do simple things right that games a decade their junior is insane. If their budget doesn't allow it, that's just people being tight with the purse strings.

The revenue does not go directly into FFXIV's budget. It goes to SE as a whole, who then spreads it out among their various projects. So it is indeed people being tight with the purse strings, but not necessarily the people on the FFXIV team.

It's still the most profitable roulette to run when you want to level up a job and farm poetics at the same time, especially when those tomestone can buy the best gear at each level cap, and give access to every content until the next cap.
And poetics will probably stay for the next expansions, meaning you'll always be able to buy enough gear to reach the current level cap smoothly.

Hahaha oh wow you people are complaining about voices in a game where the voice acting is the rule, not the exception.

1) In every part of the game, the voiced cutscenes are parts where your character has no lines, and if you have the auto-text-foward feature turned on, actually goes along at a pretty quick pace. The parts that do not have voice acting are parts of the game where there are variables present (eg your character's name instead of "Warrior of Light") or choices where your character mimes talking about something that you don't hear, but the rest of the NPC's do. For all intents, it's impossible to create "cinematic" cutscenes (voiced ones) that the voice actor can take into account all future changes to the game. Like if you pay attention to cutscenes and not just skip them all the time you'll notice that NPC's do reference your race and gender. Some reference your first name or last name, or both. My character has the same name for the first and last, but most characters only use a single name. Like in English, we all call each other by our first name, but in Japanese strangers would only refer to you by the last name. So there is this entire localization componet to these scenes which is why they're unvoiced. There is just too many variables that go into saying the player's name alone, before you get to their gender or race. If they voiced everything, your character would constantly be referenced as WoL, and that gets really impersonal. Even in other MMO games, they take pains to not say the player's name, referring only to their gender, or position of authority (eg current class.)

2) Because the game doesn't move your characters during the cutscenes (remember the "filmstrip" icon), it simply can't since everyone's cutscene viewing will end at different times because everyone's computer/ps4 has different loading times. For the most part everyone's cutscenes end within about 5 seconds of each other, but that's enough to destroy that immersion anyway.

3) This is a JRPG, that is standard operating procedure in JRPG's and anime, you let the bigbad prattle on while devising a strategy of your own, because if you don't, they will just press the big "nuke everything" button, and game over.

1) I'm not calling for them to voice everything in the game, just these dungeon scenes we HAVE TO watch EVERY time. I really don't understand why having an expectation of higher quality production on cinematics you have to sit through while playing a particular bit of content is so odd to people. The age of the content doesn't matter, they just changed it so you can't skip it anymore. By such actions on their part it's obviously something they're willing to make changes too even 5 years later.

2) I'm aware that you don't move during the cut scene. I'm also aware they do infact teleport players after cut scenes from time to time. I'm also aware that if they didn't want to teleport the players after the cineatic in question plays they could've very easily shown the boss rising into the room via the lift and Gaius using said lift to leave while the boss "takes care of us". Instead they chose to do neither and spawned the boss in the middle of the room where we were supposed to be accordding to the cinematic.

3) We did zero planning. We just stand there. There is no "nuke everything" button holding us hostage. We just let him talk and do what he wants with impunity and at length. It would be one thing if we or an ally was trying to negotiate with him or something, or even some distance and him talking to us over the intercom to justify the length of conversation but their is nothing going on on anyones part like that. It's just him talking, posing, and casually strolling to, boarding, and starting up Ultima right in front of us. At least with Nero he and Cid were talking with each other. Not so with the later Gaius scenes.

The whole Ultima thing was them obviously paying homage to FF7(if going entirely by design similarity that is), and just had to force the battle some how by "allowing" him to WALK up to it and board it.

Don't even think about replacing ARR Midgarsomr's voice with the one from HW. Nope, nope, nopeeee!

Should be the other way around for this character.

Now you can enjoy unskippable non-voiced cs too. :)

I just really, really want the songs from there as an orchestrion roll already. Castrum Meridianum's theme, too.

It wouldn't be so bad if the rewards were far better. "We've increased the rewards for it!"....woohoo, 80 more poetics....we need a REAL reward if devs want players to sit through every single second of those cutscenes.

Maybe if they gave actual incentives to run it like creation tomes or even mendacity tomes for level 70 characters. Oh, or maybe a few cracked clusters (like five or so) for characters of any role level 60 and above.

It's not 80 more poetics. It's 80 more poetics for the roulette, plus a lot more poetics for the dungeon completion (a lot of people seem to forget that running MSQ roulette yields 2 rewards) for a total of 300 poetics for castrum and 400 poetics for praet.

I have individual comparisons for castrum and praet that I wrote in another thread:

Roulette experience: 1140712 exp = 21.45% (since I just turned 62 the number went up, but percentage-wise it doesn't seem to have gone up much. It doesn't seem to have increased or if it did, it's by a small amount)
Roulette tomes: 200 (this went up)

I also got 78,092 exp seemingly out of nowhere. My guess is that the 253,522 is a new experience bonus for completion and the 78,092 is actually the boss exp. If that is the case, the boss exp wouldn't have increased all the much but the new completion exp is ok - but maybe not worth it because of the extra time spent.

Queue time: 8 minutes
Total time: 37minutes
Total time: 45 minutes
If you compare the run time, before it was 21 minutes. Add 6 minutes of cutscenes and that should have been about 27 minutes. The extra 10 minutes are from doing small pulls and people getting lost because a lot of people were newer, which will happen more often as veteran players stop queuing.

Conclusion
Because of the level up I cannot acurrately compare total (last boss + roulette) experience.
That being said:
Overall it seems like only the boss/completion experience went up by a significant amount, not the roulette experience.
I would estimate about 26% (not counting other bosses and monsters), compared to about 21% before for something that took twice as long and was a bit boring.

For those of us, like me, who ran this solely for the experience (and the nice easy run), it doesn't seem worth it - and that was just Castrum.
Furthermore as time goes on, the queue time will lengthen, and parties doing small slow pulls will also increase as they get less experienced players, leading to even more time added on top of the cutscenes. This would also mean though that the chances of having an actual new person in the run should also increase for an extra 100 poetics and WT second chance.

Note 2: Why did I not include adds and other bosses?
Because different groups pull different amount of skippable adds, and I just forgot about the other bosses. That being said since only completion & roulette "rewards" were mentioned, those should be the only numbers that truly matter, but I should have at least kept some monster exp for reference in case they increased that as well. Too late now.

Wait time: 4 minutes, but I did queue with another healer because an FC mate asked and I figured at least then I'd have someone to joke with during the cutscenes.
RunTime: 52-53 minutes (I was a little late to put my timer on, but not by much). We didn't do speed running at the beginning to the teleporters. We actually killed the groups as they came.
Total time: 56-57 minutes

completion exp: 637700 (11.99%) + 200 poetics - holy carp that used to be less than 2%
roulette exp: 2053281 (38.62%)+ 200 poetics - another holy carp
Total exp: 2690981 (50.6%)
Total poetics: 400

New person bonus: 100 poetics - In theory this bonus should pop up more often now as more non-new people quit the roulette so it's worth a mention, even though I didn't add it up to the total.

Overall mood: We were having a blast honestly. I actually noticed a person's outfit for once and we were poking fun at each other and the cutscenes. It was a really fun run.

Conclusion
While the castrum rewards didn't impress me, the praetorium rewards are certainly much more in line with the extra amount of time spent. It took a little over double the time, and gave me a bit over double the exp and quite a bit over double the poetics (even if using only 400 poetics to compare). If someone just had a long day at school or work and was not in the mood for something that required much effort, getting exp to watch some youtube or chat with friends during cutscenes isn't so bad.

Maybe if they gave actual incentives to run it like creation tomes or even mendacity tomes for level 70 characters. Oh, or maybe a few cracked clusters (like five or so) for characters of any role level 60 and above.

Not defending the changes, hate them, but they boosted their normal poetics too. A Praetorium from roulette with no newbie is 400 poetics, Castrum is 300.
