I'm more bothered that DRK has no Scythe weapon glamour.

Well now i hate my life because i didnt think of that and now that bothers me too lol.
But seriously, where are mah hammers
There's a .. Club for Drk? In PVP weapons I think.
I would honestly switch my tank to WAR if I could use one of the giant Gunhammer weapons.
and I would chop off my cat ears for a scythe skin =[
Scythes would be tricky as they would probably require entirely new animations. On the other hand I could see them using the Axe animations for Hammers. I think the man issue is the issue with Slashing damage but technically they already have a metal club for DRKs so maybe that isn't as big a deal.
I think one of the reasons they limit weapon options is that most Jobs are identified by their weapons and no jobs share weapons. Even SCH and SMN use different books. It allows them to have clear variations for Job identities.
Hammers and scythes actually are in the game - they're tools not weapons though (for BTN and BSM respectively), which is their original use after all (hammers and scythes being used in warfare was mostly due to peasant militias utilizing whatever they had to hand as weapons). So I dare say you probably will never see these as weapons in the game I'm afraid.
Also the way the game's battle system is designed (the Armoury System), your class or Job is your weapon, a different weapon is a different class or Job. So that makes it even less likely you will see alternate weapon types on a specific class.
Axes were too. Hammers and axes were once peasantry weapons. And arent axes used in tree chopping? As for armoury system, it shouldnt matter. Hammer instead of axe as a glamour should be fine then. Claws and fists arent really the same but monks get both. NIN has daggers as long as PLD swords.
The Edda stuff features scythes for both DRK and WAR, however I don't know whether that'll be part of some bundle, or the weapons sold separately from the gear like what they did with the Heavensward gear.
Dark knights have two club options, one from PvP, and the other from the Gold Saucer. Every job that uses a 2-handed weapon will be able to get a scythe whenever the Edda glamour set that was datamined in 4.0(1?) becomes obtainable.
I liked the whole "Each class is defined by a different weapon type" concept from the start (and was annoyed at casters getting wands and staves because of it), but once we ended up with Paladin, Dark Knight, and Samurai all using different forms of swords, yet the latter 2 not branching from Gladiator, I don't really know how to feel at this point. :-(
And honestly, though it might not be a popular idea, I'd like to see them just merge Mind and Int at this point and/or allow crossover for all of the (non-artifact/relic) Grimoires. As a rule, weapons should be class-defined rather than job defined (except for the jobs that [unfortunately] ignore the class system, obviously).
Bonus points if they make it work for Bard. >_>
The reason they limit weapon options is because it's too much work to make multiple weapons. SE are as tight as possible with resources in this game, if you haven't realized. BLM and WHM used to have 1 hand options a long time ago before they decided it was too much work. It's lazy but it's cheap and that's what's important to the XIV team.
If that was the reason they could have just made them drop together as you said. They stopped it because it meant making a staff, a wand and a shield for classes that didn't really "need" a shield like PLD. I was a BLM main in 2.0 and loved using a wand and shield, and would much rather weapon options other than staff, staff or a staff (the exact same weapon a WHM has).
I know this is kinda off subject but I wouldn't mind a battle-staff wielding class myself. Like an interesting hybrid between Monk and Dragoon. People talking about hammers and blunt weapons reminded me about battle staves.
i hope the save the hammers for a new class, instead of just giving WAR hammer weapons on top of axes.
we still don't have any DD with a heavy melee weapon...
Now that I think of it... I don't think I've ever seen a hammer wep in any FF game.

And yeah looks like the only characters in a numbered FF was Cinna, a minor character from IX.
All the wands/rods+shields (even the Leviathan weapons) were holdovers from 1.0. Dropping the one-handed WHM and BLM weapons was more the result of them having to fight the legacy spaghetti code (they couldn't make things drop together until one of the 3.X patches) and a two-handed to one-handed+shield "upgrade" wasn't an upgrade for Whm/Blm unless you got both parts (Blm suffered from this in BCoB). Paladins could at least always upgrade their sword and shield separately so were less penalized by a half drop.
Considering the length of time it took to fix the problem and due to the fact that classes/jobs are determined by their weapon, it seems they have opted to save wand and shield for a future class rather than add the secondary weapon paths back in for Whm and Blm.
Actually each job has its own weapon. So consider missing weapons as a future expansion's new job attached to that weapon: bell, boomerang, hammer, scythe, etc
I've always thought of this, I'm a fan of war hammers. If you were to ask me, if Geomancer ever was a class in this game, it would be the hammer user. It would be so appropriate, not to mention the interesting weapon oportunities to include crystals as the head of the hammer and god knows what as magic catalysts.
Geomancer would get a bell, it's a final fantasy you're talking about. People would associate DRK and scythe but at the beggining it only had sword and katanas.

PS: for the "DRK should get a scythe"
Hammers were one of the classic weapon groups in the first FF game. Used almost exclusively by WHM.
I admit, SE tends to love its slashing classes a bit too much (WAR, DRK, PLD, NIN, SAM), followed by piercing (DRG, BRD, MCH). Poor blunt weapon users get no love (MNK).
Godbert fights with a hammer.
...and you could go around smacking things with autoattacks on DoH/DoL.. commonly seen when misclicking a low level node. .___.
I would personally much rather see new weapons like Hammers and Scythes added as the primary weapons for new jobs, rather than shoehorned in as awkward glamours for the weapons of jobs we have. Can you imagine how dumb it would look for a Dark Knight to swing a Scythe like they would a Great Sword?
You went to the wrong page. The one you wanted was Hammer (weapon type). Your link was only for hammers actually called "Hammer" (so didn't include other hammers like Mjolnir, and so on). Hammers have appeared in more than half of the numbered Final Fantasy (I, III, IV, V, VII, IX, XI, and XII) games and many of the spinoffs. This makes them WAY more common than Books are, and Books are weapons actually in this game.
Reno actually uses an Expandable Baton, not a Battle Staff.
I want hammers for a Viking class :O
I know we already have marauders being inspired by vikings, but that doesn't mean we can't actually get Vikings too.
War hammers were used against armored troops.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_hammer
With the amount of heavily armored enemies a hammer would make more sense than a sword in many cases... Though I guess we have pugilist for that. :p
DRK and WAR have already their weapon types.
The hammer will be for a hammer swinging job, with it's own skill set around how to swing a hammer
The weapon decide the class/job.
Just imagine a person with a sword. He will be a sword fighter so long he have the sword in the hand. But the moment he throw away the sword to pick up a bow he is not a sword fighter, but now a bow fighter, who will fight with the bow not the same way he did with the sword. Until he pick up the sword again.
Letting DoW have blunt weapons and slashing weapons would change your loadout requirements. You'd have to determine what type of damage a boss, say, would be more susceptible. And bring the right weapon to the fight. And bring the right team members to augment your major damage type.
Since "Blunt" and "Slashing" is probably just a characteristic in weapon coding, it probably wouldn't be much problem to allow PLD, WAR, DRK to carry and equip both types.
But it'd be interesting to see how team compositions and fight balance would change!
they keep holding onto different weapon styles/glamours in general as if they are saving them for later expansion or for a new class.
for example, i wish the game would finally add a duel-katana for ninja. not mini-katanas (Wakizashi), tantos, or whatever the heck the "Genji Phurpa" are supposed to be....i mean, WHAT kind of weapon are those things, Maces!!?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C4%ABla_(Buddhism)
Ritual daggers. I don't know if you've seen the flying dagger in "The Shadow" but that thing is one.
ok, thank you, but if the devs can go this deep in creative weapon design, why have not one of them thought of a simple duel wield katana. all we are getting (or at least commonly getting) are daggers, cleavers, wakizashi, and apparently ritual knifes. the only weapon that ever cam close was the Ohojo, which is my main glamour right now, but the edgy and cleaver-like design still bothers me.
but seriously, the Genji Phurpa design was really bugging me, so thanks for the information.
you're welcome, I owned one a long time ago. =]
I'm guessing design wise, anything past a certain length would clip with lots of the animations, that and ninjas usually had short swords... however we do have those SUPER LONG monk fist dagger things. So who knows? Double katanas would be cool.
MIN has a sledgehammer so it doesn't prevent a new job from using hammer, and the fact that MNK is the only blunt job is something I still consider a problem, a new hammer job would add some synergy with MNK.
The Mythrite Pugil Stick, plus I think there was a dungeon variation? We called it the Q-Tip.
Too bad the whole Slashing(DRK/WAR/PLD/SAM/NIN) vs Piercing(DRG/BRD/MCH/RDM melee?) vs Blunt(MNK) isn't like the "elemental" magic that BLM/RDM/WHM get where its just flavor text. It'd probably take a decent bit of coding to redo it, on top of making sure they don't break something else with it, so IF they ever dropped the weapon types and went to straight Physical vs Magical damage, we'd probably not see that til at least 6.0.
There's also things to consider, like what others have said in this thread about how jobs have only one true weapon type (BLM/WHM ARR wands/shields excluded).
Lets hope the next tank or healer class will be Green Mage, they are known for having hammers and maces.
Squeenix gib warhammer plz
