I like the idea of repairs its just not done very well, player repairs are stupid IMO
this topic will run a long way
I'm fine with having a repair system.
Only thing I don't like is when I tell the repair NPC I want to repair all... just repair all without confirming each piece, please. >.<
If they must have item degradation, at least do it right. It shouldn't be tied to professions, and it shouldn't be made borderline pointless by dark matter being given to you freely from gathering/primal battles.
The repair system should have been implemented as a bonus system: Maintaining an item at 75% to 100% condition would grant a HQ/+1 effect to the stats on the weapon beyond what is there already. Therefore, players would be enticed to keep up the repairs because of the benefit of the +1 effect.
From a broader perspective however, perhaps replacing Item Degradation with Item Enchantment may be a better way to go. Apply 1 Dark Matter to your weapon, it gives a buff that lasts until condition goes to 0%. At 0% the weapon is just a normal weapon (no negatives, would be like the current 100% condition). Reapply another dark matter to get another buff.
It would be more accepting that way to the playerbase if asserted as a positive.
That opens the pathway for a whole slew of crafting opportunities and party opportunities. Dark Matter + Reagent/Oil/etc = Different types of buffs. E.g. applying Oil to a melee's swords will have added effect if the mage in the party casts fire on the mob ^^
+1 dude!!!
Nice spin on the system. Do I see that ever happening. Nope.Quote:

It hard to agree with such a blunt statement, but I do agree I would probably rather have no repairs then have repairs.
Just because it's not a reason I play this game, or ever will. I'll never give a crap about repairing gear and I always wait til my gear is yellow or red to repair it, even if i have over a billion dark matter... I think if a game has a less intuitive way to repair gear, then it probably has a more intuitive game in terms of content and storyline.
Now the rant forms...
Same can go for the Market Wards... If the game was kick ass where it mattered (content/story/music/ui), we wouldn't need some intuitive way to purchase/sell our items. If the game had enough crap to do, how players buy n sell their gear would be the last thing they worry about...
In any way shape or form, the market wards and repair system do not raise my level of enjoyment when playing FFXIV, ever. Maybe the same cannot be said for anyone else, I'm not here to provoke. It's just my honest opinion.
Needless to say I know repairs exist as a slap on the wrist for death (primarily), which should in return make for slightly more epic battles (making the game more fun) because the fear of dieing and having to repair is tucked away deep into the back of your head in the heat of battle. I'm just not feeling it.
Leves are still in the game and they imo are every bit as bad design as the repair system as the game barely has any content that doesn't boil down to leve-format.
i like the leves repairs however NEED to go i would rather lose 5-10 percent xp on death than spend gil on rep[airs and the wards are just plain stupid we NEED MORE CONTENT stop making shity content like iffrit we dont need time synks we need FUN FUN FUN now that being said i like the post about dm giving weapons and gear a buff instead of repairs come on yoshi and team get rid of tanaka's cvrapy ideas completely unlkess SE is being duechbags about it i fail to see why you havnt just said if tanaka made it scrap it
Sorry, having to disagree =)
Repair is cool, it's really easy to do and stuff, but I have to complain about something:
Even though it's easier to do now, without submenus and stuff, I don't like the fact that we're hammering NOTHING and get up and down like f*cking robots.
And you know what's even worse for me? People see me repairing nothing! It's like I'm staying before them scratching my tummy doing nothing at all.
So I was hoping for a 1.20x fix for this, hope you Devs will read this after your holiday =)
I got like 5 stacks of dark matter yet I always pay the 25,000+ gil to repair at the npc, I can't be bothered going through 75 sub windows, waiting on a friend to repair it, re equipping it when that greedy little bastard does it in uldah almost instantly.
In 2.0 they should move that little lalafell gogorano to an alley somewhere and make him all beat up. when you speak to him he says with bloodied lips "Apparently people didnt take kindly to my prices and ease of use over player repairs. I will repair all your sh*t free, just please dont hit me again."
Wait, so now repairs are Tanaka's idea too?! I was confused by the fact that they appear outside of SE mmo's MY MISTAKE.
"WoW did it better?"
Well then, was wondering when this particular horse was going to be dug up shot and beaten again.
The repair system was never about keeping your gear in working order, Its there to be a currency agitator both removing it from the system and keeping it circulating among players. Granted the recent changes to it have significantly reduced its capability in both aspects. It has the secondary effect of being a market limiter.
I will agree that there are to many steps involved in getting and performing repairs, I have always said this about the system. Over complication was one of the hallmarks of early xiv that is thankfully being taken care of in just about all aspects of the game.
This is it exactly. I'm the exact same way.
Equipment repairs are in every mmo ever. They're not going away.
What they are however is implemented poorly. Even after they've retardized it with dark matter instead of actual materials (necessary for inventory space yeah I know.) The menu system for getting gear repaired is so convoluted it's insane.
I will ALWAYS use the npc to repair until we can flag an item for repair while wearing it, with a few clicks. (especially weapons omg. I don't carry a spare axe, switching classes by taking off axe for repairs removes all my other gear too? wtf).
And yes I know it makes NO sense to have your stuff repaired while wearing it. That's one thing I don't care about because it's just so inconvenient otherwise.
Only reason for player repair is if you want to sell item or give it to a friend ._.
just my 2c
Think you misunderstood, it was his idea to have it in the game, he didnt come up with the idea of repairing, just having it in the game.
Anywho I dont see repairing as an issue because its so dirty cheap and I have 2-3 stacks of dark matter I can use to repair anything to 100% to sell or I just put an item up for 10k n its repaired in seconds.
So I dont even care about it, its just another burden you have to do, i wouldn't miss it if its gone because i dont even feel like it is there now as it is that useless.
Umm, not its not.... XI, Aion, TERA, a crap load of f2p mmos dont have it.
Wasn't in everquest or eq2 either...
However I'm fine with repairs as they are. The rate of gear wear is not high, so you can party for quite some time without issue. I check my gear before I leave town, and it'll be anywhere form 40-80%, hit the repair real quick and bam, I'm back on the road in minutes. Also, the repair npc can now repair jewlery, which makes a big difference.
You need repair because you need a penalty for death and a gil sink. I think player repair should go out the window though, and just let crafters craft. Let NPCs repair all to 100%.
The repair system is fine, much better once they took out partial damage penalties.
i would have been happier if they had kept most of the original ideas and gotten rid of fatigue. the game needed alot of work, but alot less work was needed then than is needed now which is a year later.
Repairs seem much more balanced now, even if I don't like the dark matter system.
Just kick everyone out of the repair ward who is not seeking repairs and I will be happy. I wouldn't mind a "Repair All" button at the NPC either.
Item
[dev1291] Repair requests can now be made for equipped gear.
≪Making a Repair Request≫
Open the main menu and select Gear » Repair Gear. To place your request, select the gear you wish to repair (main hand and off hand, armor).
Placing a repair request requires both gil and dark matter. The amount of gil and grade of dark matter needed are determined by the repair level of the item, and are as follows:
Level 1–10: 100 gil and grade 1 dark matter
Level 11–20: 200 gil and grade 2 dark matter
Level 21–30: 300 gil and grade 3 dark matter
Level 31–40: 400 gil and grade 4 dark matter
Level 41–50: 500 gil and grade 5 dark matter
A repair request icon will appear next to the display names of players with open requests.
To cancel a repair request, open the main menu and select Gear » Cancel Request . Requests will not be closed automatically, even if all gear is repaired.
≪Accepting a Repair Request≫
Target a player with an open repair request, and select Repair from the interaction menu, or simply click on the repair icon that appears in the micro menu.
To repair an item, your current class must match its repair class. Choose an individual item, or use the Repair All option to select all items you are capable of repairing.
* All dark matter used in the repair process is provided by the player making the request.
After repairs are complete, you will receive both gil and experience points. The amounts are determined by the level of the item(s) repaired.
* Both players must remain within a certain distance of one another for repairs to be possible.
She's not that far off actually -- A lot of MMOs have repair systems, a lot have durability systems without repair and a lot more have 'weight' systems.
They all fall into micromanagement, even offline RPGs like skyrim has a ton of micromanagement, which can't be a bad thing considering it's (somehow) game of the year.
.......................................
If anything, I'd ask for death penalty back, with being able to level into 50. That way you can get a buffer on 50, do other stuff, die a lot, then go back and get your buffer back for 50. Partying is 90% of the game.
I'd rather having the original repair system. I liked it way more than it is now...it does needed some tweaks, but was way more immersive than it is now...and i bet it would have another purpose other than just gil sink.
The new repair animation is stupid, dark matter is too generic, it has no gameplay impact anymore...to leave the way it is now would be better just removing repair.
Ragnarok have weight system and repair system, too
But you need repair in Ragnarok only after WoE if a Whitesmith attacked you with Melt Down (broken gear has a red name and you can only re-equip it after you repaired it for 5k zenny).
Weight system is to limiting your inventory like an inventory with limited slots in most MMO. In Ragnarok the inventory has not a slot limit (only your Kafra storage), but after 50% overweight passive Hp/Sp recovery is turned off and after 90% overweight you can't use skills.
I rather lose exp then have to do repairs. So much EXP goes to waste ; ; Also I dislike how item has to be 100% to trade it. I can't just lend gear to someone in the middle of doing something unless someone can repair it -_- Then when repairing we lose all the gear we have on equipped..lol orz
I'm pro repair, it makes more sense to have to maintain one's gear to some degree.
be better if death just took exp from progress of the current level. That way no deleveling and a nice bonus once you reach cap. It's not like cap will stay at 50 forever.
