WAR Consolidated Feedback Thread

Hey Guys, seeing as DRK's got a Feedback Thread, I figure putting all our thoughts for Warrior would be helpful! Honestly I feel like all three Tanks should have had these threads from the start and stickied but hey, thems the breaks.

While waiting for Maintenance I figure putting my own thoughts down would help, anyways so onto my opinions.

Upheaval is amazing, I love popping that off with Thrill! Fell Cleave could make do with some Potency Buffs, I feel seeing as we lack Utility, we should be doing a liiiiittle bit more damage? Kinda like the SAM of Tanks?

I wish Shake it Off and Inner Release actually did what it said on the Descriptions and removed/protected you from the debilitating Debuffs. Seeing our IR/Zerk Window heavily relies on us being able to stay in place and not be hindered by mechanics, it's clear Inner Release is meant to have us not have to worry about not finishing our combos, but that's the problem, It doesn't work, even if it says it should on the description.

Also, how come IR and Unchained share a recast timer? I never understood that.

Onslaught's fine, and now that we can swap practically freely again, I've been finding myself having more fun with Warrior now that I can setup a Hate Lead and then bring down bosses with Deliverance!

Storm's Path buff was beautiful, fantastic, now it's the same as eye except now you dont lose any damage when youre trying to build your guage!

Do you guys got anything else to add? Anyother Thoughts?

So, I think the biggest issue I have with WAR right now, is that it has 2 windows for burst DPS and you have to line them up every time. It's what made NIN unfun to me and pointlessly hard in 3.x, so I'm not sure why they made this choice in 4.x

The steel cyclone change to me is fantastic. Its like SE realized it must have sucked to take bloodbath from us and made an apology by it. Apology accepted. Made stance dancing cost free at our own discretion again, feelsgoodman. Inner release and unchained cost free? Beautiful. Onslaught...why does it still cost 20? And to hit as hard as an autoattack at that? Would love to see it as a more damaging ability that gives like 10 BG or something. Would give us that earned higher damage for no utility. Extend the cd if you need to but for now I dont really use it... Im all excited rubbing my hands together for whatever you change shake it off to :) its so terrible lol

Feedback threads are good, but the community reps actually told us to NOT use megathreads for feedback innit?

Regardless, what's going on now is a good START- we still have pretty much no identity, no utility, and the damage difference is still too small to warrant bringing a Warrior over a Paladin. Maybe over a drk, but only because drks only have one useful skill and not because they're anywhere near as desireable as a Paladin lol

The Steel Cyclone thing is half hearted. We would have gotten the same benefit out of just... you know, using bloodbath. 22.1% or whatever is too low. Way, way too low to even seriously consider it as a realistic replacement.

Onslaught is actually good to use on cooldown due to no opportunity loss...I do wish it didn't have a cost though, its not like our dps is goood enough that would tip us over either. Also be nice to charge things from out of combat =/

I think it was deliberate. I mean, SE constantly pushes us to tank in tanking stance. If you would get Bloodbath back (or anything similar to that), WARs would sit if DPS stance just as they did in 3.x.
I am very happy what they did with Steel Cyclone, it was one of my wishes for a long time, but I agree that HP recovery is somehow lacking these few percent, just like in case Path and IB...

These are my issues with WAR, all of these might just be me sucking at the job. But hey did not SE say that they would make the jobs easier and not harder to play in SB, less punishing and so on?
1) Unchained: the main problem with IR is not that it share a recast time with unchained, it is however the only problem with unchained since it pretty much made it an unwanted skill. Making it so that these two skills does not share a recast would fix it, removing the cost of using it did not.
2) Inner Release: for IR the main problem is how it is designed, its immunity works but not when SE thinks they should not and they never tell us this making it a "surprised we messed with you!" sort of thing. The buildup for a IR+zerk window is really long, it takes time but that is not the main issue since you can build up without fearing to lose the benefits of the skill. The main issue is how long the burst window is combined with the current boss design that has a lot of movement to and from a boss, sure these times are not long but they don't have to be in order to be punishing during this window. There are ways to fix this skill, not sure if anyone else want it changed but these are my suggestions.
a) IR give the next attack that cost gauge a really large dps increase, the skill costs the entire gauge. One insanely strong fell cleave would be just as satisfying as 6 normal ones, and you would not need to bash those buttons.
b) A simple dps increase.
c) Gives the war a 1min buff that halves the beast gauge cost of <x amount> attacks that cost beast gauge, when the min is up or the amount of skills used the buff is over.
d) Gives the party a damage up buff.
3) The potency of our normal combos. Since SE is most likely going of dummy numbers as they count our dps I am guessing IR is the primary reason why they are unwilling to buff these, buffing them so we can keep close to the other tanks even without maximizing IR would in their mind make the class OP since on a dummy you can always maximize IR, so any fight where you can do that WAR would be OP if they buffed the potency of our normal combos.

On the defensive side WAR is fine, if anything I would want them to give DRK one more def skill and shorten down the 3min ones for DRK and PLD toward 2min.
I am however not hopeful that SE will listen to our complains, they did not from the media tour until release. Sure they fixed the stance swapping in 4.05 which was a thing they broke in the first place, they are also going to change Shake it off which is a skill that never should have been in the game in the first place, until it is fixed we pretty much lack a lvl68 skill, yay for progression times without one. So some obvious fixes but unless they want WAR to be on the sideline this expansion they have to make some rather big changes come 4.1.

Time to raid as another tank I guess, not seeing SE fixing this in the next couple of years no matter how much we complain.

That's exactly why WAR is in such a bad position now and why it was in such good position on 3.x.

Just wanna address some things I saw in this thread:

1. Onslaught is fine as it is. With Inner Release now having no cost, you can fit two of them inside the window, which is actually quite nice considering if you don't, you'll end up with an extra 20 points you can do nothing with anyway. And if you make it too strong, it'll be worth using as soon as it's up, which would make rotations a nightmare since you'll now have 2 skills delaying your next Fell Cleave. One thing they COULD do, however, is make it not have a cost when you're out of combat.

2. The new Steel Cyclone buff is a joke. Like are you serious? Anyone praising this change is either horrible at math, easily impressed OR hasn't bothered testing it to see just how INSIGNIFICANT this new change actually is. It might as well not be there at all. A real change would be making it heal for 88% like Inner Beast does. THAT would be significant. "OMG it would be so broken!" REALLY? Considering you only ever use it in dungeons when you're surrounded by lots of enemies? The only "broken" thing about this is that the healer won't have to cast 1 extra heal on you.

3. I understand that making our damage window as big as it is for a job that relies so heavily on it, is a bit problematic. However, trying to condense all of out Fell Cleaves into one huge Fell Cleave would make the playstyle incredibly boring. It'd be better in terms of efficiency, but it would take away from the skill, and therefore from the fun that is being a Warrior. Yes, it sucks how sometimes you aren't able to land all the Fell Cleaves you were expecting to, but I think that's part of the job. Figuring out the best time to use your skills is one of the things that makes Warriors fun, and sets the good ones from the bad. Or would you rather be summed up as a class who Infuriates at the start of fights, does an Eye combo, then a Path combo, and then pops Inner Release for a 75k Fell Cleave? And then goes back to just using Eye/Block for the next 2 minutes, with weaker Fell Cleaves every now and then? No. Those 20 seconds every 2 minutes is when we feel like we truly shine. Don't turn us into a 1-trick pony.

Tank damage should be inversely proportional to their utility, but we have this bizarre scenario where WAR parses only barely higher (largely because built-in slashing debuff on dummies) despite having ZERO utility.

Outside of damage numbers, I'm still disappointed by the fact that the issues with Onslaught and Unchained haven't been addressed. I understand what BluexBird was saying about Onslaught having a use in the IR burst rotation, but I feel like that's a rather crappy way to justify the state of an ability that's supposed to be fun rather than just another OGCD to toss in. Unchained is still total garbage because it muscles in on WAR's burst rotation, which again is literally the only thing it brings to the table, and is yet another reason why IB is the only reason anyone would even *touch* WAR's abysmal tank stance.

Steel Cyclone's lifesteal is also a sad joke, and doesn't actually aid his self-sustain in any meaningful way.

The primary issue here is just how much more reliant our total dps is on our burst windows when compared to DRK and PLD.

Top parses show WARs with ~33% of total damage coming from FC. Since FC is rarely used outside of Berserk windows, we can assume that most of FC damage is done during zerk windows. Now consider that FCs account for 75% of the potency during a 6 FC window (3000 out of 4000 pot), and 48% (1500 out of 3100 pot) of the non-IR zerk window. This means that FCs account for 62% of damage done during serk windows on average.

If FCs account for 33% of our overall damage and FCs account for 63% of the potency during zerk windows, then that means ~55% of our damage comes during Berserk windows.

This all adds up to make WAR's damage very brittle. WARs do fine when battling a damage wall without mechanics, but if anything messes up our Berserk windows, our damage suffers considerably more than the other two tanks.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. Surely, locking DPS behind the DPS stance would be a surefire way to force tank stance Warriors to focus on tank abilities?

How is their design contradictory to that idea?

The 4.05 changes made WAR feel a lot better but they didn't really make it more viable/wanted. The DPS increase from the Path buff is incredibly small because we don't use it every single GCD unlike DRK with its Souleater buff. WAR might have the highest tank DPS now (I don't know, haven't bothered to check for myself), but it's an incredibly small lead and it's affected by mechanics/mistakes a lot more than DRK/PLD. The changes did nothing to fix WAR being so reliant on Berserk, or to change how you have to save almost all of your gauge between Berserks.

Right now WAR doesn't do anything for the group. It has great mitigation, but the other tanks can tank anything just fine. It has DPS, but the other tanks do nearly identical DPS with less effort/risk. It has no utility. Its self healing is bad. WAR needs to be noticeably better than the other tanks in at least one area I don't care which as long as I feel like I'm actually contributing something to my group. I just don't see how anyone can think WAR is actually fixed after those changes.

This is exactly how I feel about Steel Cyclone. 22% healing on a skill that requires 50 gauge? You get to use it 3 times at most in a pull, and that's if you built up 100 gauge and didn't spend it on the previous pull. It's so insignificant, especially compared to 5x Clemency on PLD, or effectively a 20% heal on DRK every 15s plus more opportunities for DA+Abyssal Drain (which is 88% healing) thanks to the Quietus buff.

I guess yeah if youre comparing it to IB, it doesnt really stand up to it at all in terms of damage or self sustain. In reality if youre dying and need to grab pulls then it make more sense to use IB and overpower instead. There will never be a time when a war will be relieved to have it the 22% from SC. It just seemed like a nice thing to add just for the sake of adding. They didnt have to and Im not one for having something like that taken away just cuz its small. Tbh we arent hurting for self healing abilities currently. But by all means an aoe inner beast would be incredibly sick too

That 20sec burst and how much of our dps it represent is why our dps will be below the other tanks in content that matters. Even when we do that insane rotation perfectly all we do are the same or just a little more then the others, since this rotation is so punishing we should do much more then the other tanks when getting it right and not just the same or a little more. In the last live letter the team said that a job being more complex and punishing did not warrant that job doing more dps, heck they even think it is okay that less complex, less punishing jobs do a ton more, they were talking about dps jobs but it does show their mentality when it comes to these things.
But to the 1-trick pony argument. PLD is currently the top tank dps and utility wise, its dps rotation is easy and not punishing without it being a 1-trick pony. DRK also brings good dps and more utility then WAR, yet again they have an easy dps rotation that is not punishing, they are not a 1-trick pony either. IR I would say does not only make our burst way to fragile it also turns us into a fell-cleave-spam pony.

Well, time to make a list:

EVERYTHING WRONG WITH WAR

- Tank Stance is weak compared to other tanks, mainly due to SC in giant mob pulls not healing comparable damage to DRK's DA+AD sustain.
- FIX UNCHAINED.
- WAR cannot Shake It Off as easy as the other tanks do when it comes to new skill bloat. Change Shake It Off to something useful already instead of having it be a self-Esuna that isn't used for 90% of fights.
- IR+Zerk Window is difficult as hell to set up in some raid situations, and from what I've seen from others' posts I think that there's some good ideas there to fix this since WAR needs some much-needed utility or something to boost its Damage. One idea to make it work is to have IR free up the Beast Gauge costs for Fell Cleave for 12s. The CD could be increased for this, but 120s I feel is already enough. This would allow WAR to FC 6 times and get the same damage while also allowing WAR to move more freely than it is now since the current build-up is heavily susceptible to mechanics in raid compared to the other tanks' DPS rotations.
- RAID UTILITY OR DAMAGE. It's supposed to be considered the premiere 'Damage Tank' but if it's barely doing above what PLD can do(which is around 50-100 on an estimate) then its niche is not working.

I'm not a WAR main but have Storm's Path do a Physical damage dealt down debuff and depending on the stance increase defense by 20% for 20 seconds in Defiance and a DoT in Deliverance and have Berserk do 50% damage while in Deliverance but in Defiance it still does 30% damage and gives Bloodbath effect.

I'd enjoy that. I miss our old Crit Cleaves and enjoyed the build up and adrenaline burst of those huge cleaves. I enjoy build up into explosive results playstyle which is what almost every incarnation of a Rage Warrior is designed around.

But I guess people prefer being a i260 BLM for 20 seconds every 120 seconds?

Wait, I don't think I've actually heard anyone say "spamming Fell Cleave is fun", at least not seriously.
I think Blue is just saying being a one trick pony whose trick is one hit would be worse.

If WAR had a trick attack attached to upheaval that would make it viable in a raid group I think. Not every static has a ninja so having a tank that can provide the same utility as a ninja would help. Other than that general consensus is WAR either needs a bigger dps buff to compensate for lack of utility or increase it's utility so it can provide something to the party. I'm leaning towards the latter as I would like to have that same usefulness that WAR's used to have in 3.0 when Storm's Path had the dmg down debuff.

Besides Shake it Off, I guess just raise WAR potencies a little bit if the class philosophy is to bring damage to raid or just remove Onslaught cost, that would help with a constant OGCD.

As much as I would love to have Unchained have a separate cooldown from Inner Release, I kinda gave up on that idea when I heard some people saying that the reason it wouldn't happen, is because then, a Warriors tank opener would be "too strong". But then I started thinking about it, and it made me go... SO WHAT?! o__o In fact, this could be their raid utility. Parties might want Warriors for the high opener. Plus it ties in very well with Inner Release, seeing as how they need to build their gauge up to 100 before switching stances.

Besides, Paladins can still use Requiescat + Holy Spirit in Shield Oath, while we're locked out of all our high damage skills. So what would be the big deal of Warriors having access to something that simply just makes their regular skills do more damage? Don't forget, Unchained doesn't affect Inner Beast, since that already ignores the damage penalty. It would simply make their regular filler skills hit for a bit of extra damage while they're tanking.

Also, about what I said earlier, I think the main reason people are trying to change the way Inner Release works is because it's unrewarding. You have to try so hard to deal the most damage you possibly can under those 20 seconds, just to be on par with what the other tanks can do without breaking a sweat. As if that's not enough, it doesn't help that the anti-stun, anti-knockback effects don't seem to work half the time. But I also don't think that making it easier would be the solution, as that would just make the class boring. So what I'm thinking is... we really need to be compensated for how difficult it is sometimes to find the right timing during fights to pull off all our Inner Release attacks properly. And that should be with extra damage. It's hard enough as it is, I'll use V3S as an example:

At the start of the fight, with Spellblade Holy eventually stunning you, you're forced to save Inner Release until way later. You can get an Upheaval in and build your gauge back to 100, and then after the Pole Shift, you kinda have to do an Eye combo again or your damage buff will drop off by the end of your Inner Release combo. And then Inner Release is back up... RIGHT before the dragon spawns, and you're forced to go pick it up and drag it off to somewhere else... but you also have to make sure you stay tanky enough cuz you're gonna get hit by both Waltz AND the dragon's breath which is absurdly risky to tank in Deliverance. "Oh just use Holmgang" WELL WHAT ABOUT THE WHITE FLAME YOU JUST TANKED 20 SECONDS AGO?! Not to mention if you use Holmgang and she aims Ribbit at you, you're fucked. So yeah. Then it's back up right before the book phase ends, which is nice, you can generally fit it your Inner Release combo right before it's time to turn into an animal.

Anyways, I've been trying to clear this fight lots and from what I've noticed, the Paladins are just able to keep their damage up for so much longer! EVEN when they're tanking! Like yeah, my damage is still higher than the tank's, but I feel it should be a lot higher for how much work I put in, and that the reason it's not is because I keep having to chase after the perfect opportunity to use Inner Release perfectly, taking incredible risks in the process.

I hope they realize they killed Warrior. It's not about buffs to the Job. The new Warrior playstyle is just terrible. Who thinks it's fun to wait 2 minutes to a damage burst?
My main issue with war is that it just feels clunky and cumbersome compared to DRK and PLD. And there is no real trade-off. Until they rework war again I will just let it rest in peace. Currently on v4 prog and there's no reason to bring war.

In my opinion SE needs to redesign the job. My first tip. Stop doing skills locked to stances. It's terrible. PLD is great because there's no stance requirements. You just use your skils and that's it!

Well, I wouldn't say they KILLED it, exactly. It's still viable - just not as rewarding. Paladins only have to wait a minute before their buffs are up again, but I wouldn't say their rotation is that much more interesting than a Warrior's. Between waiting every minute for Requiescat + Holy Spirit spam so I can then just use normal skills with Fight or Flight and then get mana back up for Requiescat again, I'd rather have the Fell Cleave spam combo, to be honest. Thing is, even with their rotation, Paladins are able to help out their teammates in a lot of tight situations. And it's part of what makes them fun.

But I agree with you that locking skills to stances isn't doing Warriors much good. Perhaps if they made it so that Inner Beast was locked to Defiance and let Warriors Fell Cleave in Defiance?

This is true, but in Shield Oath Holy Spirit eats a damage penalty and is actually weaker than Inner Beast, whereas Inner Beast with its effect is about as potent as Fell Cleave would be if you could use it in Defiance but it was effected by the penalty like Holy Spirit is.

Inner Beast is 350. Sure, it ignores the damage penalty, but Holy Spirit is 430. Shield Oath only reduces damage dealt by 15%, so in the end you still end up with a 365 potency attack that you can spam whenever your mana is full. I'm not gonna bother mentioning Requiescat in this case since Warriors have Berserk.

Still, my argument stands. Fell Cleave under Defiance would get reduced to a 400 potency attack, so it's not that far from Inner Beast, except we'd get to choose between doing extra damage, or going for the heal + mitigation. That's a pretty fair trade, if you ask me.

Inner release
-Unlink from unchained
-Scrap the Buff completely. Make it a flat dmg increase or a buff that lets us use our gauge spender as oGCDs. Just something else to bring us away from the Tight window we have now.

Onslaught
- remove the cost. There is still no reason it has a BG cost

Shake it off
- Since SE wants to change it anyway. I hope they dont dissapoint us.

Overpower
- Let it generate gauge to utilize our aoe spenders more

Oh... yeah, right. So that makes it a 340 potency attack under Shield Oath. I guess that does make Inner Beast better in terms of damage. Still don't think it would break anything to open up Fell Cleave during Defiance. Though now that I think of it, people would probably just switch to Deliverance anyway whenever their Berserk is up and their beast gauge gets full. So in the end it probably wouldn't change much.

What do you guys think about onslaught becoming free after a specific range threshold? Like if a mechanic forces you to go ranged (which Omega savage sure as hell loves to do!) we can recover back into our rotation cleanly, but it won't mess with our overall melee dps rotation/damage output, since SE doesn't seem to want that. Kinda fair, I'd rather not close the gap to actual dedicated DPS classes, so I understand why they'd be hesitant to remove Onslaught's gauge cost. I think I'd rather see this over a change that increases our cooldown on it, I enjoy my double onslaught in IR and I actually do tend to use Onslaught after provoke to grab agro more interestingly, and to gap close on v3s occasionally (probably more for fun at the expense of some damage, but I still pull decent numbers so screw it)

Oh I know they will. The fact that they realize that this skill is in fact a cheese skill and thus not bothering to fully implement its use in end-game content fully should speak volumes. You only need to be hit by bad breath to realize the potential of this skill and lets consider what bad breath puts on you but Shake it Off removes it all at once. I can honestly say that I will miss what Shake it Off currently is and I blame poor battle design for the reworking of this skill in 4.1.

However I do agree with the OP generating gauge. 10 gauge is a good number that I'm comfortable with that doesn't promote OP spamming but still rewarding you for doing it 2-3 times making your next SP/SE combo push the gauge to 50+.

I agree with the last one so hard. Don't see why they couldn't do it either.

I could actually grow to like shake it off if it removed ALL debuffs except for vuln stacks.
