What should my materia be?

Hi guys, im fairly new about materia and would like to ask suggestion for DRK here.

I heard best materia for accesorries are STR for tanks, why is that?
And as a tank, shouldn't we all focus on higher hp than anything else, hence VIT materia for everything? why bother with Direct hit and Tenacity?

I do STR then DH then Crit, I am not sure how determination is scaling these days, might be viable for BIS over DH or Crit but I really don't know.

You can't meld VIT in tank gear, it's already maxed.

This game is hugely dps focused so generally if u can survive the tankbuster and auto after you have enough hp since no matter your hp you still need a heal after a tankbuster and you need to use a cooldown like shadow wall on it, when that requirement is met increasing dps is next, besides you already have max VIT on accessories so cant meld more and in that case we meld our dps mainstat STR

as far as scaling from what ive seen DH is king and then DET and SKS is better than Crit atm.

Tenacity is pretty decent and will only continue to become better, it's 1% for 200 so with 1000 TEN (what i have atm without TEN melds) i have a base 5% so while it doesnt scale as high for dps as the other TEN does more, it increase mitigation, damage and the amount you are healed for and is pretty popular for world prog on tanks. (This is from a raid prog viewpoint, farms and stuff i think we will meld whatever gives highest dps again)

Let's say you have 50,000 HP, and you're fighting the hardest boss in the game. Nothing hits harder than it.

Now let's say you are able to do the whole fight, and throughout the fight your HP never drops below 10,000. This means that you have more HP than you need. Is this a waste? Of course not! Mistakes could happen, and that might cause your HP to drop lower. If you didn't have that extra HP as a safety net, you would have died.

But suppose you're pretty confident in the fight, and don't think you'll make any mistakes. Wouldn't you say it would be better to trade some of that extra HP and turn it into more damage? That is the case of advocating STR as a main stat. So even if you COULD put VIT inside your accessories, it would be sort of a waste. Even in emergencies, chances are you would have died anyway. If your party messes up, most of the time it doesn't matter if you have 50k HP or 70k - you still gonna wipe.

So you see, after a certain point, it doesn't matter if you have tons of HP. You just need to have enough HP to be able to do the fight properly.

As for why you should put STR and not something else like Direct Hit, that's because STR is just a solid, substancial increase (unlike Determination which is just a small increase), and it doesn't rely on chance the same way DH and crit does. STR would be the best meld for everything, but you can only put it on your accessories, so you're left to choose other things for your armors.

Also, to people saying "DH then crit", like... tank equipment doesn't come with Direct Hit at all. So you'll never be capped. So... WHEN ARE YOU GONNA PUT CRIT?! lol

I personally used to like crit but I feel as if now, my critical rates are so low that I don't even see the point anymore. So I go with Direct Hit given that it seems to be doing quite well these days.

For right side(accessories) it's str all the way no question. For left side I think it's a fight between direct hit and tenacity. DH gives more overall dps, but tenacity does still increase damage, as well as reduce incoming damage.

The way materia works in FFXIV is each item has a stat cap and you can't put in more of the same stat above that cap. In the case of vit all tank items are already at the vit cap and more vit can not be added in anything.

Since I'm PUGing Omega Savage on my tank alt, I went with tenacity melds on my left side, if only because I'm running with seven other random people and any bit of mitigation helps in that scenario. If I were in a static with seven people I trusted, I would likely go DH. My right side is all STR.

Like many raiders, I'm an agressive tank and care very much about my DPS contribution.
I'm fully aware DH is the better DPS substat but decided I'd go for Tenacity as the little extra mitigation is a decent trade off for the dps you lose.
Stacking 520 Tenacity from full left side melds is ~2.6% DPS increase and passive mitigation and self heals while 520 DH is ~3.33% DPS increase.
Not a big deal either way...

It really depends on your play style really. Tanks are the only class that have that kind of freedom. If you turtle/traditional tank then tenacity > determination. If your a dps tank then full direct hit. If your middle of the road then tenacity on gear without it and direct hit on gear that has tenacity. The first two will depended on the needs of your raid group. If you dont have a raid group and just pug, then the last will add to your dps while accounting for different healer mentalities.

Melds never were a big contributor to your dps. ~5% at most, but when everyone in a party puts that extra effort, it can be the little something that tips the scale.
Just to give you an idea though, in a fight like Susano EX, a tank will do about 1M damage for the entire encounter. Even taking a rather pessimistic stance on Tenacy and making it 2% less than DH, it would account for 20K damage difference. So about 6 GCD...

But in raid, this can be a difference between a clear or an enrage.

Materia can make a difference, especially if your wiping consistently to enrage at 1-2%

Skill Speed isn't a bad stat now that it boost your AA and Dots and indirectly your resource generation.

DH left STR right. Now u can get crafted accessories meld str on the 1 for sure slot and over meld DH for even more dps. Ull get more DPS out of max DH then the w extra STR. Now if ur group makes alot of mistakes and ur healers are skeptikal then DH can turn to tenacity. To a raid tank with a solid raid group this is a huge nerf but to a casual group could be the way to go. Plus tenacity could be reworked in future patches. Now u adked why, the reason why STR is first is because its a main stat that our dmg is based off of. Main stats always hold the highest stat wieght (amount of dps per poimt) over secondary stats. DH is a secondary stat that scales much higher then all the other secondary stats. Now if u dont plan on raiding then none of it truely matters in dungeons and 24 man raids. I think we need to be careful about saying things like this. We already have people thinking 1000 tenacity is 1% damage which is false, 1000 is 5%, it's 200 for 1%. There's actually not a very large difference between tenacity and DH as far as damage goes. Max tenacity meld vs max DH meld less than 1% damage difference. This is why so many people are suggesting tenacity, it's not a "huge nerf" to damage, it's a very minor difference in damage to pick up a good bit of extra mitigation.

Tenacity has a bad rep but it's really not a bad stat.
I'm going full Tenacity personally and I'm an aggressive tank. If you can stack up 2000 Tenacity, that's 10% passive mitigation and more selfheals for a marginal dps loss.

Tenacity isnt as bad as people are saying. But its nowhere near as good as we thought it was going to be. Its a good stat not worthless like parry. But any serious raider will laugh at that. More accurate stat wieghts will be out soon but u can make multiple builds urelf and test it out. DH is still what u want.

Not to kention u can stack crit and tenacity in ur gear sets. Adding the extra dps from DHIT should be a must. If u cant mix match ur gear between savage and tomes then u shouldnt even ask or be in the conversation as for it doesnt matter for expert roulettes

Meld strength on your accessories for sure. As everyone has said. It's the strongest option by far.

After the scaling was figured out it turns out tenacity can be pretty worthwhile. While not the absolute strongest choice for DPS it's actually not that far behind direct hit.
All in, offense and defense included, it's a really strong stat and I think I'll be favoring it on my left-side, especially at the beginning of a tier when my ilevel hasn't caught up. It's still going to make me do more damage and it'll also help the healers out. It's a small sacrifice to make vs. direct hit.

The reality is that the secondaries don't have an outsized impact on tanks. DH, Tenacity, Crit. Whatever, as long as you're melded up they're all going to be pretty close to one another.

I just thought I might point out but one of the people in this very thread saying tenacity is a good stat to meld is a very serious raider.
