[dev] Job Specific Gear, be creative please.

Dev team, this is my plea. When 1.21 comes out and you release the much anticipated job specific gear a lot of us have been wanting for quite some time now, please avoid mistakes of the past.

When I read form the most recent letter from the producer;

"(Job-specific weapons are lined up for after 1.21, and we’re making sure getting them will entail a bit of difficulty! )"

I am stuck thinking that perhaps this might turn into another age old "hunt the NM, get the key, open the coffer, get wrong item...repeat." this is neither fun nor difficult, it's random and tedious.

I think what a majority of the player base would love to see is an engaging series of quests that are both fun and difficult. Where all aspects of our game playing skills are put to the test. Problem solving, team work, battle prowess. Perhaps a quest that can be done with out Path Companions and a few friends? Perhaps something that will engage us on a whole different level?

Coffer key hunts have been the way of things since 11 and in my own personal experiences I find them to be extremely frustrating. As a player I want an engaging, fun and difficult challenge that at the end I will be rewarded with a guaranteed chance at the item I seek.

We are not asking for a cake walk, just something with substance.

Those of us with less play time than others are often not able to spend the amount of time required to get the items we want in the traditional coffer key hunt system.

i dont want something stuiped ... like Axe with feather = warrior weapon :/

It was said from day one that gear will come from quests, from what I remember.

I want this to be 8 man content where in the quest you need to gather X amount of items and then require 7 of your friends to help you beat a certain boss

Story line quest leading to battle pls.
I'm on the fence if the battle should be solo-able or require at least 3 persons..

I would be happy with this too Thanos. Anything is preferable over the standard "hunt the NM for 0/1% chance of getting key, get the coffer key open the chest (with 0.1% chance of getting item you want), get common item start over"

I want this to be content anybody can access at their own pace. I see no purpose in making this stuff insanely hard to get just for the sake of making the kids with tons of free time feel special about obtaining it.

You can access it at at your own pace all you want. Its not going no where. And really getting 7 people to help you is not hard.

I hope these quest allows at least 2 member parties. I really dislike things that requires 8 people when you can do it yourself or duo with a friend.

Do you realize that they have already begun work on 1.21, which means it's already been designed and planned. This "plea", or whatever you're calling it, will fall on deaf ears.

Happy holidays, and cheers to thinking they will change something major a few months before a patch.

You want something in the next patch? Ask 4-5 months in advance and maybe you will get it.

Who says I'm anti-social?

I was just pointing out that there are other people who play this game. I know that must be hard to see from atop that high horse of yours, but purposely keeping content from people for the sake of keeping a minority happy isn't a smart move.

What they should do, is make an NQ and HQ version, which require NM items. That way, people who just want the gear can obtain a NQ item...while super studs, like yourself, can go for the HQ item. They can make the HQ item drop off a super tough HNM or something, while the NQ drops off a regular NM. Or better yet, have it require multiple turn in items you obtain by gathering, so those classes aren't completely useless. Make the NQ item fairly rare, and the HQ even more rare!

Well Ifrit and Moggle Mog are technically quests as well, so OP's fears are valid.

I'm not a fan of coffer hunting/key farming either, although I did enjoy having to farm the item to pop the item for my WHM AF body and the bomb that spanwed in Vahzl was pretty fun as well.

There are good ways they can implement this stuff, the content should be based around a party of 4 IMO, but should still be difficult.

no there should not be nq/hq versions of these.. its AF! It should be acquired through difficult content

I see what you mean, and it'll work fine for the weapons. It is something similar to FFXI HQ Empyrean Weapons and Weapon Skills. Seems like a fair compromise if anyone done those things before.

If you don't know about it, you basically kill some easy NM and farm items for the NQ version, and for the HQ you farm items from incredibly hard NMs.

Like Thanos already stated; the content is not going anywhere. If it takes longer for you to finish, so be it.
This isn't keeping anyone away from the content. If you have more time to spend, you will get to your destination faster.
It's only logical.

I agree. My only complaint is that "hunt for the coffer key and hope to get the item!" is not difficult its tedious. lol

Oh, come on, you didn't even need that many people to get your AF in FFXI. If you did, I would have never completed it.

You can still have a sense of accomplishment without it all being full-party raid content.

For once I'd like the job quests to be a solo or duo/trio thing. Let's say a light party max. I don't see those quests as something concerning the whole Eorzea and where people should ally to take down a huge threat (Primals, Empire, ...) but as something more specific to your character and his own story.
That doesn't mean I don't want them to be challenging. In fact it would be quite fun to have a 1 vs 1 boss fight or something like that.

Time sinks =/ challenging or engaging. There are so many ways they can make questing for your gear/abilities interesting. Your first task as a Dragoon is to go kill off some dragon(or group of dragons) and bring some fang(or something) in order to create your spear(maybe gaining an ability in the process). For Paladin, a trial might involve having to go to an aptly named "Ye Olde Cave of Trials(TM)" where you might have a variety of goals, such as solve some kind of tricky puzzle or fight off hordes o' mobs and kill a boss at the end for your sword. If it ends up turning into a simple matter of "stand in place, what for mob to drop key, lather, rinse, repeat", then there really isn't much to say about FFXIV.

The "Everquest" model of extending otherwise small pieces of content arbitrarily has to go. Current and future MMOs will have to really add some meat to their otherwise skinny frames if they want to thrive alongside other genres of gaming.

I agree completely!

Hopefully it's hard to get and requires skill. I don't want to see a bunch of people who don't know how to play their role running around in this "AF" gear.

I am going to laugh my ass off if the "AF" drops out of the new instances there putting in.

You did actually -- At 80 - 85 cap you needed at least 2 full parties for some of the Empyrean +2 items, this is with cheats, by the way. (Atmas and curor buffs) Unless your group was extremely skilled at low-manning content that was designed for full alliances. (However they take forever and a day to do so at that point in time.)

MUDs and MMOs thrived just fine, they were a different type of gaming, they didn't have to directly compete or live in harmony with offline games -- I think this is why MMOs have become pretty boring to play lately, they're starting to be designed with less of a social aspect (the whole reason they even existed to begin with) and more of a single player aspect.

yes, i would rather have a story behind the AF gears and stuff... :P but ofcourse light party for me, having 8-man content is hard for me since i only play with 3 close friends of mine, since other 4 alraedy ran off.

The quest reward for those are gil and EXP, not the weapons. Those are just pluses.

We're talking about the original first tier of AF armor. Not AF +1, not Relic Armor (AF2), not Empyrean Armor (AF3). But AF.

I didn't play FFXI after the cap was raised past 75 (I quit shortly after WotG came out). I had the full set of original AF, and I certainly didn't need a two-party alliance to help me get it.

I want it to be challenging, I want it to feel epic, I think it should give you a real sense of accomplishment. But for the starting AF set, I think expecting 8-man raids for each piece is a little over the top. If they want to raise the bar on future sets, sure. Especially if it is considered to be raid gear, it should be acquired with a raid. But not the starting set. 2-4 people is plenty.

i personally want all job gear quests to be 4 member party type.

its not fun to solo the quests and go here and there to get your gear easily ,something like a feast of fools quest for the whole gear set or part of it would be awesome.

I agree with 2-4 people set up. (At least 2-4 not max)

I dont see how its KEEPING content from people.. just like any other game.. they put content there for you to set a goal to reach it.

Why do they gotta do easy/hard mode for everyone?

There should be only 1 and its up to the players to reach that goal of obtaining items

Considering that Jobs are designed specifically for party play, I seriously doubt that the quests to get the items will be solo-able.

I imagine that the JSE (or AF gear if you prefer) will require 4-8 person parties to acquire and the quests will be tied into the new (and perhaps existing) dungeons somehow.

unlock job gear/abilities by soloing = you're doing it wrong.

I'd love to see *interesting* and *engaging* Story Missions / Quests to earn your Job Specific Armor rather than a boring Repeatable Time Sink.

Continuing along the lines of what Malakhim suggested, maybe...

* For the Monk Quest, it's about entering a Tower and using your Hand-to-Hand Melee abilities to overcome a series of formidable foes: There's a deadly Ranged Specialist you have to defeat, followed by a brutal Dark Knight with High Defense, followed by an adept Sorcerer with dangerous Magic Spells, etc.

* For Black Mage, it could be overcoming opposing Elemental Forces at Wyvern's Perch, and utilizing quick thinking and mastering the changing Elemental landscape (e.g., pools of Lava (Fire), Ice Caverns, etc.) to your advantage.

etc.

Anything over a "Collect 50 AF Totems/Nuts to get 1 piece of your AF Armor"-scenario. (~_~)

Please improve upon weaponskill, and spell animations PLEASE SE.

I would prefer a chain of quests with story line that culminates in a challenge that results in obtaining a piece of equipment at 100% drop rate (for this, other stuff can be farmed). Parts of this chain can be soloed, others require a reasonably skilled party to obtain.

Actually, this equipment is more than 1 piece, might be nice if I can farm my pants solo, need a team of 8 for body piece, coffer hunt my gloves, get a rare drop to have the weapon crafted...

However they do it, I hope for no cakewalks please but also no 1% drop-rate on hard 8-man boss kill crap. There MUST be a feeling of achievement. I should walk up to Thanos and notice he got his hat and be all "Oh sweet!".

One final thing, don't force me to solo it, if I want to duo with my sister I shouldn't have to kick her from the party to watch a CS and fight a easy mob... That makes me crazy ><
