My Problem with PLD Oath Gauge

When I'm in tank stance as mt and a successful block increases the oath gauge, it almost always procs shield swipe anyway. Sure it's a little mitigation and mp gain, but that's about it. And it builds so stinking slow it's not like it's on demand mitigation.

I think we got the shaft on the whole oath gauge mechanic, since shelltron is the only thing it's good for anyway.

Oh, dude. You are looking at this very wrong.

After you swap to Sword for your proper opener, the gauge builds super fast. At that point, it becomes a source of Sheltron that come through whenever you need them for busters, physical or magic.

Additionally, in OT, you get the super-sick Intervention to spend it on, to give the MT bonus cooldowns. It's awesome.

Shield Oath gives you lots of gauge when you actually use Shield Oath: trash, when you block a lot.

Sword Oath really pulls through when you want to use it: boss fights after initial hate gen.

hmmmm Honestly I think it's well balanced for PLD. I use all 3 tank types and so far seems ok to me just takes time to adjust. You can also use other forms to raise gauge faster being all Jobs have access to it depending on actions. See Daich's example his dead on.

Kinda makes one wish the +60% blocking skill was not on a 3 minute cooldown.

The oath gauge is good for both Shelltron and Intervention, and you can fill the gauge quickly with Holy Spirit.

You should probably never use Holy Spirit in Shield Oath, though. HS is the highest-DPS part of your rotation. Using it in Shield is a great way to destroy your possible damage output.

While that is indeed true and completely valid, it depends on how much you are feeling out a given fight. If your static is on Savage, for instance, and you want to learn the fight, the extra mitigation from Shield Oath is welcome. As such, HS then becomes a tool to increase the gauge at a decent rate. Sure, you do less damage, but at least you don't end up a stain on the floor before you learn the fight.

After you learn the fight and know that you no longer need ShO? Go ahead and use SwO and don't use HS in ShO.

I forgot about intervention. I swapped it out for shirk for more dps during swaps. I'll have to play with it more. Having a hard time switching to swo during the opening phase of susano, due to pretty op dps in my PFs, so I'm kinda stuck using HS is Sho after fof.

Is there a good way (without nin) to help build aggro instead of wasting fof on roh combos?

Wait, what do you mean "swapped it out for Shirk"? Intervention is a native ability, and Shirk is a role ability. They aren't mutually exclusive.

If you really must stay in Shield Oath, you can quickly increase your Oath Gauge by casting Holy Spirit. 2-3 casts is enough to fill it enough for shelltron to be up.

out of all the gauges added to the jobs in 4.x i will admit that PLDs feels the most useless, its only really used for 2 abilities that could of just as easily costed mana instead.

Yes, but when I play on controller and only have 32 buttons for 38 pld actions, I have to pick and choose what I bring.

I don't know how, since I don't play on a controller, but you can get more binds. We can't afford to lose buttons on any job, even PLD.

I manage to slot in all of the Paladin skills including five role actions and I ended up with 6 slots left as filler. You using the cross hotbars?

extended hotbars where? learn to use those on controller (enabled in options menu) and you'll have no problems, AT ALL.

Basically this. I love the job and hope to God they don't mess it up, but the gauge feels less dynamic and fun than those of other jobs.

There's only 2 ways to my knowledge for OT. Throw in an aggro combo every once in awhile, or provoke the boss when she casts the tankbuster on the MT (which is semi dangerous if the MT doesn't grab aggro back again before the cast finishes) I find that just doing an aggro combo every once in awhile works the best, sure its a small dps loss but you cannot be 2nd on aggro otherwise unless your dps players sucks.

If you're talking about actually tanking her as the MT then there is no way around using aggro combos once in awhile if you want to tank her in SO.

The oath gauge feels to me like SE saying "Oh well everyone else got one of these so I guess we will add on to the PLD", it feels like the only part of the job that was not well thought through, feels forced, weird and makes me wonder why it is there.
It is used for two skills that would have been better just having recasts, kinda like how sheltron used to work. Filling the gauge doesn't do anything either beside acting like a forced payment for those two skills. In shield oath it does not add anything like increasing the PLD change to block, in sword oath it does not increase the damage in any way... it just sits there.

The oath gauge indeed feels tacked on. It serves it's purpose, but it could have been made alot more important and engaging then it is now. That aside, the current WAR implentation is alot worse then what we have. They rely alot more on their bar, and the penalties are way to severe. I wouldn't want something like that on my PLD either. And I hope WAR will get some buff/fix in that regard soon.

Can you imagine if virtually every skill PLD got was locked to one stance? Imagine Clemency only being usable in Tank stance or Holy Spirit only in DPS. Or if you could only use their level 70 ability in the tank stance and it shared a CD with another skill in another stance.

One thing I really like about the new PLD is that I can help people in my team no matter the stance.

PLD only has 33 actions. Personally, I put Tempered Will on a third crossbar and customize the switch to only rotate between this crossbar and my main one.

This is also a little OT but good lord I would LOVE to see a greatshield/towershield on the paladin!

I would rather have it like it is compared to WAR. Right now it can be used to provide utility towards the Main tank or any other teammate. Seems to me they have the base set up, and the next expansion is sure to add some skills that would make use of the gauge. Hopefully being able to use those skills in any oaths.
