Three Mage Gate ?

This would make POTD more interesting and ofc raiding/dungeons as well

Why though? I played XI and the mage gate, or the weight gates in QC were NOT "Fun". If something isnt fun, why put it in the game. It adds pointless restrictions and pushes people into playing classes they dont actually want to play...

Lets just stick with doors that just...open ok.

Yes for potd, it's boring, so everything to spice it up a bit is welcome. It would also fit the flair of the place.
But no to putting that into dungeons or raids, it'd just be tedious having to go through this too much.

It actually has something similiar - namely: Glowing platforms that used to require 4 people to stand on them to unlock the next way. All fair game as long as you were split up (the content forced you into groups of 4 and 4) but as soon as you had all 8 people together and had to do the puzzle with two platforms in the same area... oh boy, I've seen groups "fail" at that...

Not that this is a "bad idea" but I also dont consider it super intresting or anything like that... you cant bind it to jobs, in PotD you cant even bind it to roles, so it would become "Hey, everyone, stand in that spot for three seconds... okay, now we got MORE PotD to run, juhu!"

I actually thought a lot of those were fun. simple things that made places a little more interesting.

Most of them had alternatives anyway so you weren't really forced to play classes you didn't want to play..

The 3 Mage gate for Example I remember having a "moon orb" or I think that's what it was called so I could open that gate myself. even as a ninja.

The garleige citadel gate breaches where you needed 4 people to press the buttons. could also at one point also be done solo by going through the cavernous maw to the past.

Eldieme necropolis as well where you had to juggle the switches to open and close paths.

Quicksand caves weight gates. 1 big galka or 3 tiny tarutaru...

loads of zones had those little puzzles in and it just made them a bit more fun and bit less bland. even castle o, SSG, temple of ugaleigh, pso xja, davoi!

I'd like to see some of that in XIV, or just some indoorsy zones in general. even 1.0 had indoorsy zones like mun tuy cellers..

It's a sorry state when these simple things are considered punishing.

XIV really needs some indoorsy type zones. why can't a miner actually go mining IN nanawa / copperbell mines for example?

Another idea to make Potd "fun" would be a mechanic from Cutter's Cry 1.0
Someone step on a trap (still PotD mechanic) and the party get force teleported in 2 seperate rooms (here begin the CC mechanic), where they have to kill all enemies, but the last enemy in both rooms have to get killed at the same time to left the rooms, or the enemies spawn anew.

Doesn't have to be restricted to certain classes, just make differently colored ones for certain number of people that have to stand on them. And don't place them next to each other, let us search for them.
Again, I'd only like this as an addition to potd.

I thought the 3 mage gate was a neat thing to run into, even if you could eventually just circumvent the mechanic altogether with enough mission progress.

Opening the door the "intended" way was one of my highlights of my early FFXI play (which, let's face it, is where most of the nostalgia comes from)

Yeah example for floor 100-200+ lol

It's the sort of thing that gave life to the world in FFXI. But I don't think Kupipi would take my rolanberry so I never got the thing to open it on my own.

FFXIV isn't really trying to have that kind of world. Video games just aren't like that any more. People don't have the patience, we're lucky they make us walk through the zones once before letting us teleport and fly over everything.

Do you even play FFXIV? The game is full of pointless restrictions, even more than on XI. The gates were fun and you could bypass them by doing a series of quests. At least people remember these gates, unlike most of the content and empty open world on XIV.

I played a Galka. I loved those QC gates.

It could be incorporated well enough into dungeons. The panel could randomly select the job(s) that opens the gate, and if you've got the right one in the pt you can take that path. Set it up as a trade-off; the alternate route might be a shortcut, or bypass something particularly nasty, but you won't find as many chests. Or turn it around the other way where there's a chest on the extra route with something special but there's a mini-boss guarding it. I would say, don't make any alternate path longer than the main one since that'll kill most people's desire to take it in a heartbeat. In general, dungeons could do with more internal variety, and having multiple branching points that are either random or directly chosen by the players could help with that. Incorporate more interactions similar to boss mechanics that are simply for getting around or choosing a path, some platforming, things to break up the grind of pull after pull.

Just imagine, something like a demonic funhouse. During one part, you have to drop down onto a conveyor and start making for the exit, or you'll get sent into a wall of spikes. Then you kill a giant jack-in-the-box boss, the lid glows with the symbol of a job, and if everyone stands on it they get launched up into the rafters and rigging of the place, contending with the clockwork components running the traps below rather than the traps themselves for the next segment. At the final boss, a bunch of bomb-themed balloons begin floating down and will do AoE damage if they burst on the ground, but there's a dart table there and instead of fighting one DPS goes and does the blowgun mini-game throughout the fight to pop the balloons before they touch down.

It'd be nice to have stuff like that simply because now class changing restrictions on skills are gone...and we can swap to needed classes NP. But oh noes you need three people for something that isn't Duty Finder THE HORROR. Maybe I should go back to XI. <_<

No no and no. What a chore it was to get 3 other players to open the doors in garlaige citadel just to hope you find a coffer.

It was charming and neat at first....and then when you had to go into those places for the umpteenth time for keys, quests, etc, not so much. There is a reason people would start or switch to Windurst just to get the item to bypass that door.

I played FFXI for over 7 years and I miss a lot of things, however the three mage gate is not one of them. Also potd can be solo or duoed, so this would really not be a good thing.

It's in the V3 Deltascape as a instant-kill mechanic, kinda :)

As a puzzle - solving mechanic, if you need to ensure that those mages are there to do it, otherwise you're not going to get past it. Works fine for PF/FC groups, not so much PUG's.

One of the changes between V1.0 and V2.0 was the removal of variable rewards based on completion time, opening all the chests, and so forth. They likely did this because they decided to streamline the dungeons so that there was only ever one big boss, not multiple choice bosses.

Honestly, the kind of thing I want to see is a PvE tower-defense style persistent overworld fight (eg a FATE that has a 2 hour time limit, but takes no less than 30 minutes) Where you have to fend off waves of either

a) Zombies/zombie-monsters (Very Hard, can not return to base, if KO by a zombie become a zombie until someone kills you, must be revived by healers or return back to a Aetheryte elsewhere, no Aetheryte at the base if destroyed.)

b) Garleans (Hard, can return to base upon KO, Aetheryte present)

c) Various trash mobs (Easy, and gets harder if not defeated quickly, can return to base, Aetheryte present)

Get enough people to protect each entrance, battle commences. Crafters can build/repair the defenses of the area before it commences and then switch to their combat roles. Between each wave you get a prepare/collect repair phase.

If nobody shows up at the scheduled time, base is taken over by mobs/garleans/zombies/etc and to restart it requires killing them all. Garleans will use the defenses against you.

In all cases, they start out with easier mobs, but the longer they persist, the more reinforcements are called during that wave. Rewards handed out only for completing and participating in it. Collection, construction and combat phases ensure people don't just AFK.

The O3 boss actually has a mechanic like this involving having the party step on the correct squares to avoid damage. It's pretty cool.

Haha I remember having to go all the way back to town in order to switch jobs for that, also altepa weight platforms, you'd need like either a Galka or 3 tarus to open it, it wasn't just jobs it's was races too. Team work was so FFXI it was great

I'd love to see this come back for FFXIV, maybe as a way to lead into wherever the Red Mages originated (Call it Thamasa). There doesn't need to be any content in that area. No quests or anything. But it'd be cool just to see like a village out there or something with some other Mages. Should unlock with either 1 WHM, BLM, and RDM, or 3 RDMs and one having their Black Mana Gauge full and the other their White Mana Gauge full.

Only Toto-Rak had multiple end bosses, and not a single in-between boss. It depended on which door you unlocked with the collected keys.
But there are other mechanics that the devs can copy from 1.0 dungeons to PotD.
Example:
poisoned air (AV) - find a room with fruits to stop the air to hurt you

something like this is in v.3 of omega. but only on a basic level (and ppl still fail it)

Maybe a three mage gate as an alternate route to end like a bonus room or special ( extremely hard )boss would be nice. One shot with random boss that would make dungeons and raids interesting. Besides in FFXI it wasn't hard if you were social and just ask people.

It's fun to see how some people miss shapes and colors -.- or even fail to follow tips. v3 was very fun and it's easy Love that battle. Wish they had more where common sense is tested. ( note common sense is a dying trait )

FFXI had all kinds of interesting little tidbits to it...
- Things that could be done only at certain times of day, or during certain kinds of weather.
- Days of the week that were elementally attuned, and would buff or debuffs spells depending on whether the element matched or was weak to that element.
- Gates that required specific party composition to bypass.
- Weather that was random in duration, rather than changing like clockwork every eight hours.
- Airships and boats with scheduled arrival and departure times, that traveled to their destinations in real time.
- Shops that had business hours, after which they were closed and inaccessible - as well as weekly holidays in which they were inaccessible all day long.

Details like these made Vana'diel feel like a living, breathing world - but on the downside, each of these mechanics forced the player to WAIT. Players needed to wait for a full moon and clear weather to obtain the Key Item needed to access Divine Might. Players needed to wait for three adventurers to take pity on them and help them access Garlaige Citadel's depths (via the four-man gates). Players needed to wait for wind weather to progress their Trial of the Magians daggers. SE wisely created bypasses for many of these obstacles (and obtaining those bypasses was one of my primary goals in that game - by the end, I could go pretty much anywhere I wanted to unaided), but there's no denying that from a pure gameplay perspective, they were annoying at best and infuriating at worst. You really had to love the game to put up with all that crap - but the result was that pretty nearly all the game's players truly loved the game.

FFXIV does away with almost all of that - but at the expense of feeling less immersive; less real. It feels... hollow, in the way, like a façade. It is certainly far more accessible a game, though, with many more players.

FFXIV is by far a better game, but FFXI is by far a better world.

For a taste of what FFXI was like, take up fishing. The mechanics behind fishing in this game (ESPECIALLY Big Fishing) are very reminiscent of the kind of stuff that was commonplace in FFXI.

I still play both, after playing FFXIV yes it looks clunky, yet is the same...curse advance technology with their pretty colors and new speeds :P. Nowq if they make FFXI reborn under FFXIV I would play it more lol. I miss the true grinds in a weird freakish kind of way.

Content that makes it harder for you to get into it, for not having certain people with you is...
I mean, look at the current duty finder requiring a tank, healer, and some DPS.

This should be a solo game.

It's old indeed, I play both and have been playing XI for 14 years, I'm still having way more fun on XI than here. If they ever do a remake of XI, which is deserved, I would leave XIV in a heartbeat.

Adding something like an Emergency Mission to PotD or future deep dungeons could be a cool idea to help break up the monotony. By "Emergency Mission" I don't mean literally Diadem's Emergency Mission, but just something randomly present or not in any given run that can be encountered on any floor, that is rewarding, and that is different from the rest of the dungeon. It would maybe need to give a good chunk of extra XP and an aetherpool flare for both weapon and armor to interest everyone, but it should be something that's sufficiently desirable that it's reliably cleared/attempted when it's encountered.

I love XI, and it will always have a special place in my heart, but stuff like this was such an arbitrary-feeling pain in the arse.

It's cute and it is memorable, but I think some of XI's design decisions need to stay in that era of MMO.
