Some PLD changes I'd like to see

So I know there is a lot of talk right now about where WAR/DRK is but I'd like to suggest some changes to PLD. Right now, they are in a very good place, arguably too good. So before anyone jumps on me for suggesting PLD buffs, not everything I want to see is a buff.

1) Flash

I'd like to see the enmity generated on this reduced a tad. The recent buff to it was incredibly heavy handed and as the primary source of aoe agro generation, I feel this skill is too strong.

2) Total Eclipse

I'd like to see a small enmity generation added to this to complement my suggested reduced enmity gains on Flash. Why? Because it adds a little variety. While the grand scheme of things won't change on holding agro on aoe packs, I find this particular skill quite boring to use right now. I also never use it outside of dungeons, and Goring Blade combo will still be the chain of choice on 3 enemies.

3) Cover

Might just be me but I never use this skill ... ever. Actually I took it off my bar again. Even enhanced cover just does nothing for me personally. I'd like to see cover changed to the current10% Intervention effect with Enhanced Cover adding the ability to transfer 50% of Rampart / Sentinel Effects.

4) Intervention

Another fairly lackluster skill. Right now tank busters aren't dealing enough damage to need more mitigation and PLD really lacks both a gap closer and gauge dump skill.
I, personally, would like to see this changed entirely to:

Cast: Instant, Recast: 15s
Range: 15y, Radius 0y
Effect: Creates a beam of light to draw the Paladin to their target and damages with a potency of 100.
Shield Oath effect: Increased enmity.
Sword Oath effect: Restores MP.
Oath Gauge cost: 50
Can only be executed while under the effect of Sword Oath or Shield Oath.
Cannot be executed while bound.

I'm actually kind of surprised that they didn't change Cover to "Rush to target's party member side and take all physical damage intended for target for the next five seconds," to make it more distinct from Intervention and give it some classic FF flair. They might as well just give everyone a gap closer at this point, due to the popularity of the mechanic.

The issue with Oath gauge is that because both abilities that use it are defensive, losing gauge is kind of meaningless outside of ensuring that you have enough to Sheltron the next big hit. That's part of the reason why you can't find anything useful to dump gauge on prior to switching. They really should have just moved all of PLD's resource costs to gauge instead of MP, including Clemency (Shield Oath only) and Holy Spirit (Sword Oath only). That way you'll always have a way to burn off excess gauge, but losing gauge also becomes more meaningful. You could also have Divine Veil and Passage of Arms drain gauge while active. They could balance this out by making RA generate gauge, which would help out with the slower gauge generation in Shield Oath.

As a side point, I think that Hallowed's invincibility effect should only negate damage that would drop you below 1 HP, like the other two tanks, and that blocks should occur in Shield Oath only.

I completely agree with the enmity changes, I had fun with the initial enmity values because enmity generation felt meaningful and the RoH combo felt like it still had a purpose despite losing the strength debuff. Now we can just spam royal authority again.

The other changes though... I would definately wait until savage to comment on their usefulness

I'm actually having a lot of fun with the new cover now it does magic, and intervention is also pretty fun. I only wish it had a slightly longer duration. maybe 10 seconds. sometimes I find I put it on at the beginning of a cast bar and it's dropped off before the cast finishes. or if I put it on half way it doesn't seem to take effect in time.. (kind of like you can pop hallowed and still die a second later...)

perhaps a little lack lustre in current content but to fair everything thus far is easy mode... and if intervention was stronger / the extra mitigation more necessary you'd end up making paladin an absolute mandatory choice.

the enhanced cover though is like an additional rampart. I actually like it.

Side note. also ok with both uses of oath guage being defensive.. because you can bet your bottom dollar that if there was any offensive action to use it with. no one would ever touch shelltron / intervention ever cus mahhhhh deeps.

I think back to later ARR before they nerfed Zodiark dungeon drops, going crosseyed trying to speed run through dungeons as best a PLD could. Never shield oath, cover/voke before a wasted Flash GCD.

Total Eclipse hasn't changed that method, so I got a nostalgic love and hate feel with it. Still, how any times do Flash: as few as possible. Cover is an occasional 'one less Flash'. PLD still focuses on teetering right on the enmity line. PLD doesn't need to hold hate indefinitely, just long enough for the next CoS to come off cooldown.

Intervention is the skill I'm still getting familiar with. My preference goes to cover, as the tether gives a nice visual to the party member who thinks I'm not aware I lost hate. Tether helps them realize 'nah man i got you covered.'

I don't know what Intervention adjustment would need, or if its necessary, since I'm still trying to get familiar with it, seems mostly raid specific. Not a whole lot of value in 4man.

And Goring > Eclipse assuming the DoT will tick for it's close to full duration as you 3-GCD each mob. Which is too long, they should be dead by then. If I DoT a target, it's for TP sustain as much as any other reason.

I think PLD has the most interesting AOE game for 4player now. I didn't really understand the enmity complaints that's been happening in 4.0.

Enmity struggle is not something new for PLD. If you're not flirting with losing hate, that means you overused Flash.

Holy Spirit: I don't think it needs to be changed, it just confuses me. Why did they give a frontline fighter a ranged attack before giving him a gap closer? I rarely use this ability outside of mele range. (Except for PvP) It's not like I can use it on the move while closing the gap. I just don't understand the design choice.

Our job bar: it looks like it was just slapped together at the last minute.

There are pros and cons to Holy Spirit. Being ranged is an advantage when there's a lot of seperation from the boss, being a cast there is a disadvantage if there's a lot of player movement.

Really this is as it should be. All primary DPS abilities should have their caveats, which make them excel or slightly-hinder based on raid. I love the fact that during stack mechanics and raid mechanics, while DRK/WAR/Melee DPS just stand their with idle, my PLD can add 2-4 ranged Fell Cleave GCDs that the other melee jobs are just dropping from the encounter entirely.

It is kind of annoying though that Holy Spirit has such range but Requiscant doesn't, Requiscant having the same range as Holy Spirit would be swell.


Tempered Will needs to be on this list. All this talk of Shake It Off.. the other day I did Shishui and Temper'd the boss's Kick aoe and still got knocked back.

It's funny you say that. There are a lot of mechanics, currently, that are ignoring some skills. A few examples:

Susano: Cover won't take Storm Splitter tank buster (at least the times i tried it hasn't worked)
o3: HG won't prevent the knockback on the blue zone floor aoe and i think the freeze is also applied regardless.
04: Thunder III and HG (again) - Deals 0 damage but still applies a Lightning resistance down debuff.

I think mechanics like these have been intentionally designed to bypass the "0 damage immunity" and general safety buffers HG used to provide.

I totally agree Requiscat need a distance buff, it's extrememly annoying, and a small duration buff, to say 13-15 seconds, would allow for some movement. Though I doubt we'd see any buff to duration at this point.

I'm honestly disgusted at the fact that despite currently being the best Tank in the current meta PLDs like you are still asking for more benefits! Apparently it's not enough for you to already be outclassing both DRK and WAR at everything huh? I mean DRK and WAR have both been feeling incredibly shorted this expansion with how gimped they are and not much to show for it compared to PLDs right now. Heck the only reason people aren't all just running double PLD for 8-man content is because of the LB penalty! Yet you still have the bloody nerve to be this greedy and demand more?!

Feedback you say? All I see is a PLD unhappy with the current way certain skills work even though some of the changes they want would only put PLDs even higher. Not that PLD players like that really care about anyone else this expansion anyways. After all as long as PLDs like them are happy they feel everything is fine.

Also, I never even said the word "crying" anywhere in my post. But what would a PLD even have to cry about this expansion anyways seeing as they're already sitting comfy at the top!

I can't speak for other DRK/WARs last xpac. But I had zero complaints about last xpac even though WAR was the Tank sitting at the top of the meta back then and DRK was still in the middle. Of course PLDs like you love to bring up PLDs former standing last xpac repeatedly as a counterargument. Because you had to spend all of HW feeling incredibly salty. So you think it's all just perfectly fine for other Tanks to suffer now instead rather than giving a hoot about actual balance.

Honestly I don't see how what I propose would put them even higher.

1 reduces this current 0 effort enmity bloat PLD is rolling in
2 adds a 2nd aoe enmity generation tool that is only useful in 4-party content.
3 & 4 combined REDUCE group utility.

The only real "buff" in my list is number 4, which would add a gap closer at a much higher cost than the War and DRK combined.

Uhhh If you took cover off your hotbar cuz you're not able to utilize it then you still got more learning to do.

Perhaps if others like you weren't also ignoring WAR and DRK feedback, there wouldn't be such a gap. I'm leveling all three. I simply did PLD first because it was the least desirable from much of Heavensward, especially in simple dungeons, which I knew I'd be spamming to level, and wanted a change of aesthetic (especially with my previous slight favorite, DRK—though playing each almost equally—feeling incredibly clunky at level 60 to me).

Why do people assume that anyone who comments on a job must play it exclusively and desire to sabotage the relative standing of others? I just want all three to have more enjoyable gameplay.

Also, just because something is performing well doesn't mean its gameplay can't be improved further. For instance, let's assume DRK was performing best. Would that make its changes any more enjoyable to those who really liked the way it worked in 3.x and are disgusted by much of its 4.x iteration?

My thoughts:

• Stance-dancing should be improved, both via reduction to average potency cost per execution and the "feel" of swapping Oaths.
• Tempered Will should work against more effects and/or have its cooldown reduced.
• Shield Oath should generate some amount of gauge from hits or potency taken, rather than only upon blocks. (E.g. 2-3 per, with blocks remaining at 5.)
• Shelltron should guarantee blocks on a certain potency (and thereby—auto-crit—damage-amount of attacks), rather than just one. Unlike Inner Beast, it is essentially useless on Trash.
• (Shield) Oath Gauge needs to source more than just Shelltron and Cover. Like so many other job gauges, it seems only to be an uptime-only shared cooldown with added RNG and wherein (for SwO) attack speed buffs and recast time reductions are interchangeable. There's nothing interesting about that.
• Total Eclipse enmity slightly increased. Flash enmity decreased. (Primarily to keep PLDs from being forced to waste their Blind uptime for threat.)

On the whole, I also think that:

• Defense and Magic Defense over various armor classes needs revision. Using leather armor as the base, each armor class should differ by a consistent non-compounding 25%. Tanks, therefore, would only have 50% more defense, down from 88%. This should help reduce the concerns of tanks being OP or HP-bloated.
• All accessories should now give the same amount of primary stat per item level, rather than Fending Accessories at certain levels giving additional Vitality compared to the primary stat given by other types at the same item level.
• Tanks now receive .8 Attack Power per Vitality. Simple as that. It's a small AP loss at the moment compared to 270 slaying accessories, but will now better scale appropriately (given that tanks would otherwise be locked out of primary stat growth—currently Strength—beyond item level 270).
• The base Vitality given per class level to tanks has been reduced slightly.

I do, however, think that Requiescat's range is fine as is. I like that I have to think to hit it before moving out of range for any substantial loss of potential melee uptime, holding onto the CD if need be.
However, I think the 80+% MP requirement should be removed. The lost of casts during the window despite having the same CD is cost enough.
Holy Spirit could also do with a faint potency reduction and a faint enmity increase in its place. Our OT dps is plentiful as is considering the amount of cross-mitigation we bring, especially compared to WAR, and our ease of rotation.

We do care. Discussing changes to one tank doesn't equal refusing changes on others. There are many other forum posts asking for buffs to DRK and WAR, some asking for nerfs to PLD.

My personal stance is this; buff the other tanks to be PLDs equals, but not PLDs mirror. Let's make it balanced, but not HW "balanced".

Also, you really should be using cover. It's really useful for when someone misplays and is close enough to you. Cover + Hallowed (if necessary) can save someone before they die.

To clarify; Hallowed will only decrease damage coming to you, but it can still be useful if the cover damage ALONG with incoming damage will chunk you too heavily or outright kill you.

That'd probably see a lot more use if:
1) Cover triggered more quickly.
2) Hallowed Ground triggered more quickly.
3) If many attacks didn't go through Hallowed Ground when transferred via Cover (ever since SE decided that "double Hallowed" (Cover + HG) was too strong, somewhere around Ultima Ex, iirc).

My mistake, you still take damage intended for the covered with cover active even with hallowed, hallowed only seems to block the damage intended for you. This needs testing. In my experience, resistance buffs like rampart DO actually decrease the damage incoming with cover, on top of what enhanced cover does.

Yeah, I believe it was a hotfix shortly after 2.1 that ensured Hallowed could only affect damage already intended for you.

What would be truly overpowered is if you were to receive only what damage passes through the other tank, or even just if Intervention applied its damage reduction first. Not recommending that, but it is an interesting thought.

For now Cover just allows the OT to be shielded instead as to forgo Shield Oath for either tank in fights where the tankbuster occurs every 60 seconds or more, such as Susano. OT Shelltrons, MT Interventions. Sense.

Yeah, but what I was trying to point out is that PLDs who are already definitively superior at literally everything when it comes to Tanking aren't exactly in any dire need of immediate extra improvements when the other two Tanks are still so heavily lacking. Since when I see PLDs asking for even more improvements when they're already so lacking in any remaining downsides just feels rather greedy and selfish. I mean they don't need to be this exalted image of pure absolute flawless perfection. Sometimes a few downsides are actually necessary to maintain a degree of balance. One can't always just simply have literally everything without giving up even a single thing in return. Since at the moment they're currently the best Tank for damage, mitigation, raid utility, AND even self-healing. There's not a single thing they can't do better. Which is why it bugs the hell out of me that they can't just simply be satisfied with already being the best and having taken literally everything from DRK/WAR. Also, it's very hard to have any faith in SE properly fixing things for the other Tanks given the extremely sad state they left PLD in for all of 3.X. So naturally many DRK/WAR players are worried that SE won't properly address this situation and are going to leave them in such a severely gutted state until 5.0.

The only thing about PLD that bugs me right now is that Shield/Sword Oath are still on the GCD for some reason.

I still don't find it as satisfying to play as WAR or DRK somehow, even if it is objectively better. I think might be that their attack animations and sounds just lack oomph.

would like a POA buff display icon on party members UI, you just dont know if it is affecting them.

Why would you want to weaken Cover like that ? On it's own, Enhanced Cover offers the same mitigation as Intervention+Rampart, and you can pop Rampart on top of that.

LOL, I know that =) I play smn from time to time. I'm just saying it feels weird. I understand there are times where we are out of mele range but 99.9% of the rest of the time? Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for its removal, I just thought it odd that we got it instead of a gap closer.

This just keeps the two skills the same as they are now. In fact, you might not even use Flash if Total Eclipse has enmity generation. The blind isn't really worth the damage loss when you've got actual CDs to mitigate the incoming damage.

This is worse than current Cover unless you pop Sentinel with it and getting it back to current Cover would require you pop Rampart. Dunno why you'd want this.

Right now, no. In Savage (aka the 8man content where Intervention is relevant) I can see Intervention filling CD holes for cleaves or helping another party member (healer/DPS) mitigate a mechanic targeted on them. It's extremely strong in that regard and only really worthless in 4man content, in which you have Sheltron to use your gauge on anyway.

Hah! Fair enough.

I think they're going with a 2/3 overlap on some abilities - like how PLD / DRK got a "shield other" ability (or two in PLD's case) and WAR / DRK have the gap closer.

I don't know if I agree with Intervention being lackluster. I personally think it's great fun to pop rampart / sentinel and then intervention the MT right before a tank buster and watch them take a ton less damage. My only gripe is that it's difficult / irritating to get the correct timing for intervention on abilities that don't have a castbar with them. (I'm looking at you, Lakshmi)

It's not that I can't utilize it, it's that it's far too situational, at this point, to make me WANT to use it.
e.g. No real use in Lakshmi (single tank fight) -- Didn't take the damage from Susano tank buster (though this could be an issue with how slow the skill fires).
I'll give it another try but even with the "rampart" effect, it's still only useful if PLD is running as OT

I agree, a form of gap closer is needed, I see much talk of how PLD has "everything and excels at everything" however, when you introduce mechanics that force you to move away from the boss (o4 void thunder III as an example), PLD has at least 1 GCD lost to getting back into range. WAR's closer, while needing gauge, is still a great way to minimise dps loss in such situations.

Because I feel the current position of PLD is too strong in some aspects, and lacks in others. I understand that PLD is supposed to be the role of "group protector" but when you look at their skill set it's just too much. Do we really need all those buttons? Content isn't (and can't be) designed to NEED them - they just help. As for Flash/TE, as long as they balance the enmity correctly, TE shouldn't be enough to hold any agro, just top up what has been made by Flash. The current state of Flash means that I do it 1 time then not care anyway.

I have also noticed this and it made me really salty, i guess that is the reason why TW did't get any changes because why fix something that is not even supposed to work on anything....

Out of curiosity, why do you have macro's on just about every weaponskill?

Please don't change Cover, I've been getting a lot of fun out of shirking my friends and using Cover as a defensive CD.
