Okay i think i have discovered something that people are not aware off Scholar guide.

There is a new type in the game that was introduced called phase classes (Dragoon / Summoner / Scholar) that are situational based or have a phase mechanic now as this is the healer forum i will talk about my class and experience and that is the scholar.

Sestained healer = WHM
Preventive healer = AST
Situational healer = Scholar

Now i have found that playing scholar in days of old is gone and dead putting shields willingly on everyone will not cut it anymore now its much more complex.

Lets talk about our ability

Role ability's i take
Esuna
Swiftcast
Eye for an Eye
Largesse*
Protect*
Feel free to swap out one of the * for Rescue or lucid Dreaming if your hurting for mana

Dps skills
Broil 2 > Ruin 2 > Energy Drain (only if you need mana)
Miasma 2 > Bio 2 > Bane (only if there is more then 3 mobs)
Shadow Flare (apply's a slow so always use this)

Healer skills

Single target healing
Physick : Your filler healing spell.
(Shield) Adoquium : Use when ally is 90% hp.
(Healing) Emergency tactic + Adoquium : Use when ally is at 50% hp.
Lustrate : Use when ally is at 30% hp.
Excogitation : Use this on the tank then focus dps till it falls off the tank or heal other members if they loose hp.

AoE healing
(Shield) Sacred Soil + Succor : Use when group has taken minor damage.
(Healing) Sacred Soil + Emergency tactic + Succor : Use when group has taken major damage.
(Stack shield) Adoquium + Eye for an Eye + Deployment Tactics : Use this when everyone must huddle together as Adoquium provides a better shield then Succor.
Indomitabilty : Use this when group has taken critical damage

Buffs
Dissipation : Use when your fairy is about to die don't worry if you have fairy power as it retains the meter.
Chain Strategem : Use this at key points of the battle for max effect.
Largesse : use this when people drop to 50% and Rouse is on CD.
Swiftcast + Raise : self explanatory
Aetherflow : When it comes to aetherflow you need to make sure your always using the aether as it builds fairy power and it reduces the cool-down so you should have expelled all 3 before 10 secs when you can use aetherflow again.

Fairy
Aetherpact : Use at 50% hp deactivate at 70% hp.
Rouse : Use this when people start to drop to 50%
Eos
Fey Covenant : Use this for incoming big damage.
Fey Illumination : Use this after big damage.
Selene
Fey Caress : Use this when more then 3 despellable debuffs on group.
Fey Wind : Use this on burst phase of the battle.

The class has become much more a thinking game where you need to know the fights if you can tell what will happen next you will be rewarded with everyone not taking much damage meaning less healing and more dps but failing you will be punished with more mana cost and less dps time in a number of fights thinking like a scholar or i would like to say a tactician i can often run a hole dungeon barely dropping below 75% mana as for trials i often will stay around the 50% mark when it comes to MP.

The thing with aetherflow you must understand there is a time and place to use them if you use them too fast you will ruin yourself and possibly your group if you use them too slowly you waste possible fairy power i tend to try and burn them every 20 secs on the CD of aetherflow.

The class is more braindead than ever, I think you would mean. Anticipating a fight and damage has always been part of the Scholar toolkit as it is not a responsive healer, but a healer putting on shields before the damage actually comes out. Mana cost is not an issue at all with Lucid Dream. It's by far the thing being discussed that Scholar does not need at all, it needs plenty of others things, but better MP management is not one of them. As for the rest, I don't really see the point of this thread? You basically just pointed out the obvious with little nuance to anything ...

It's a valid argument because obviously Scholar players will comment on the Scholar changes. Similarly how the majority of Bard players didn't like Bard in 3.x.

Also I really hope nobody follows this guide. I applaud your effort, but a lot of the stuff here is not optimal. For example using Sacred Soil and Succor when the party takes light damage, as you have stated. That is straight up a waste of an AF stack. Scholar does NOT need to be a situational healer, we need to get back to being the best at preventative healing ASAP. And I really want Virus back. :C

As Kabzy said, Sacred Soil is not something you use to mitigate minor damage; it's something you use to help prevent a lethal attack or rapid series of huge hits from outright killing people.

In dungeon play it has no useful application unless you know your party is screwing up a mechanic and you're trying to mitigate the fallout. In raid progression it can be helpful now and then, but it's generally not needed if your group knows the fight and is adequately geared.

In short, Soil is so situational that it's kind of sad.

As SCH I disagree with your posting. Being a healer is a thinking game in general, and if you arent thinking ahead, youre doing it wrong (both for tanking and healing mind you). The only issue I have is the reduced MP gain from Aetherflow. Other than that, so long as you adapt, you can certainly adapt to the 4.0 changes making it more than a "situational healer"

Look, someone who thinks Fey Union is useful. I can't remember the last time I used it. I think it was in the last fight of the 4.0 Story, and the tank died anyway. That was when I realised how slow and bad that skill is.

As an "extra" Aether spender, Energy Drain >>>> Sacred Soil in almost every situation. The chance for a free Succor can't compete with the free damage and guarantee of MP returned that ED offers.

The only real problems with the skill are the range and it relying on the fairy's AI to start up. It's actual heals (when taking advantage of the Direct Hit bug) are fine. It's great in situations like Susano's sword where the tank will be staying in one place and you want to be able to deal with other things, or Lakshmi's healer-target circles where you want to take them away from the party. It does of course have the negative synergy issue with Dissipation, but Dissipation has problems anyway.

Its funny i have yet to see anyone try what i said and give me feedback but you would rather just justify it as incorrect it seems like everyone here is thinking this is 3.6 or something and that SE just nurfed the SCH for the sake of it...

Lets put it this way i have tested this and it works for me i at least came to the forum to try and possibly give someone the mean's to understanding of how to utilise some skills to aid those who don't understand but all i hear in the reply's is people complaining how scholar is bad and we should abandon it and anyone speaking of it in a positive light should be chastised for it because everyone fears change word of advice for everyone learn understand and adapt if your a real scholar or a healer for that fact you should understand that if you cant understand that then unfortunately your a horrible healer that demands others should adapt to your needs and you believe you should not be blamed.

No wonder people say forums are toxic place's.

The problem with swapping out protect is that people die in encounters all the time, and then you need to swap it back on. Similarly the problem with taking Esuna off your bar is that people make mistakes, and often get debuffs that could be avoided and would be well served with a cleanse, and fixing your bar for each individual encounter is the essence of anti-fun micromanagement. While Protect is fine as an option, it is simply a bad quality-of-life adjustment to make an entire role utility an optional choice when there are no solid alternatives to replace the job function, and I am fully aware DPS have long-cooldown limited variants of debuff removeable that frankly suck.

The swapping of protect is for battles that require 2 healers you only need 1 healer casting protect its mana free and has the cast time of a normal heal the other healer can use rescue instead also i kept esuna as a none swapable did not put it in the description as everyone who is a healer should know how it works and how needed it is still confuse to why its a role ability taking up 1 role slot.

As Cynfael states, aetherflow charges typically see the best returns out of either just Energy draining or popping a lustrate/indom for relevant burst to allow you get back to DPSing faster. Sacred soil is a wonderfully powerful ability during progression raiding but Indom typically beats it outside of that.

Unfortunately I am going to agree that your guide is quite a significant over simplification of a SCHs kit, using Adlo when the tank is 90%? Why? It should be used either if you are falling behind on healing or to absorb an imminent and potentially lethal hit. Throwing it out mindlessly just because the tank grazed their knee is highly inefficient and is going to leave you OOM in pretty short order.

Completely disagree. Soil is a nice tool to help smooth out the damage some of these tanks are taking on the trash pulls the in 4 man dungeons. The extra healing breathing room allows for extra dps.

I respect your opinion, but I've never seen enough of a difference using it in that context to make it worth the stack.

In theory, yes, it has value if you are mitigating a lot of big hits, but the question would be whether or not that difference significantly changes your healing strategy, and I don't find that it does except possibly in the largest of pulls.

In short, Soil isn't useless, but it needs to mitigate a shit-ton of damage and/or save players from death to be worth it.

Each player's healing style is of course different. In ARR it was like it is now imo. A huge help. At the end of HW is was not needed at all really. It will probably decrease in effectiveness again as people get more gear. Scholar healing just feels more like it did when the game first launched. To me anyway. Even with it's problems I still vastly prefer the scholar healing style.

Sacred Soil is rarely ever worth it over Indominability. It simply doesn't mitigate as much as Indominability restores. The fact that you advocate for such casual use of Sacred Soil tells me and the forum at large that you have no idea what you are doing.

Sacred Soil is bad because Indomitability outclasses it most of the time, there's only 2 situations that Sacred Soil is better than Indomitability:

- Sacred Soil mitigates a potential lethal hit. -> In this case Sacred Soil is necessary to use over Indomitability because without it people would die. This situation doesn't happen in most of the content, not even in savage raiding.

- Sacred Soil mitigates more damage than Indomitability heals. -> In that case we are talking about waves of AoEs targetted to all our party. The problem is the same. If Indomitability heals for 8k to all the party that means that the damage you get from those AoEs needs to be higher than 80000 for Sacred Soil to be better. Again, there's no mechanic in this game that makes you heal for so much in such a short period of time.


The mere existance of Indomitability rends useless Sacred Soil. If Sacred Soil wouldn't share the same resources as Indomitability it wouldn't be a problem.

Wasting fairy power is no excuse to use the wrong ability at the wrong time. Ten fairy power is a physick from a pet instead of an embrace. A physick that comes from a pet, and counts as an ability making rouse do nothing to it, unlike embrace. Losing ten fairy power isn't going to keep me up at night. I feel burdened by having to find uses for that stupid gauge when it reaches 100 considering the hoops I have to jump through to use fey union.

to Sebazy comment as it would go over the 1000 character limmit

The mention to use energy drain is to use up remaining Aetherflow before it comes off CD to build up fairy power and put aetherflow on cd again because aetherflow should always be on CD if it is not then you are wasting potential fairy power and potential MP gain as for lustrate/indom those should only ever be used when damage becomes critical depending if its a single target(lustrate) or multiple targets(indom).

Really now because i've been doing the very thing i said in this guide and i have very rarely ever ran out of mana lets put it frank sacred soil does not cost any mana costs 1 aetherflow and has a 20% chance for a free aoe shield or aoe burst heal if you use Emergency Tactics before hand and using up 1 aetherflow has a 20% chance to knock off 10 secs of the cd to aetherflow the sacred soil lasts 15 secs midigates 10% damage and has a cd of 30 secs.

Why? Indom is an incredible ability on a reasonably short CD, pocketing it for a critical moment that may never come is a waste unless you are reserving it for a specific mechanic that's imminent. Why spend ~7.5 seconds topping a group between aoes when you can achieve the same thing within 2.5? Time is a resource too and being more efficient with it allows you to get back to healing the tanks or DPSing accordingly.

What content are you running? I'll hold my hands up and admit I've not bothered levelling SCH yet, but there's no way playing by your rules would be sustainable for Susano. Not to mention that it just doesn't make sense in my eyes, being flexible and able to quickly adapt to unexpected situations is a huge boon for a healer. Following rigid guidelines just isn't an effective play style especially with some of the quirky strats you see about EG: Lakshmi solo tank.

Lastly, take note of AlphaSonic's post above and consider doing the math yourself with a few logs. It takes an inordinate amount of incoming aoe damage before Soil wins over Indom, about the only example I can think of in current raid content is if people are flat out ignoring the lightning mechanic on Susano.
