Props for RDM, Devs!

I don't know what manner of sorcery you guys used to pull off Red Mage--at the start of 2.0 I couldn't figure out how this job could work in XIV--but I have to give you guys all the credit for doing something the devs at XI couldn't do: make RDM a fun AND useful job to play.

I'm currently at level 54, just dabbling in between doing the MSQ, and I can honestly say I am enjoying the job and storyline. Keep it up.

Stop posting positive things on these forums!

Can't say I agree there, I liked RDM in XI.

But I also like it in XIV. I wish it had a wider variety of spells, but the dualcast mechanic is fun.

Thanks to the server issues over the weekend, I decided that RDM was going to be my new main for this expansion.

I never played XI therefore I am not sure what it was supposed to be. But I am having a blast, started that job right at the beginning, thinking I wouldn't like it and could just move on. But I can't find myself switching to another class as of current. My RDM is level 62 right now, but man I really would like to try sam, not going to see that happening soon lol

I absolutely love Red Mage, even when I did a LolDRG and backflipped off the arena in Titan.

I love Red Mage a lot! It's an amazing class. It is very simple yet very rewarding gameplay, and I love frontloading all my damage into bursts without the need to worry about DoTs! :D

RDM in FFXI was built as a generalist class that could do a little bit of everything.

Post-NA launch, the job was given a focus on debuffing, spells that came standard for white/black magic (Protect, Cure, Raise, Stoneskin, elemental nukes) and was given a way to sort of combine melee with magic with Enspells (self-buffs that added elemental damage to your auto-attacks). It was also one of the only two jobs that could restore MP of other people in combat. The community decided to give the middle finger to everything but the ability to restore MP (via a spell called Refresh), and pigeonholed RDM to become what we old-timers call a refresh-bot. Enfeebles had wonky durations and required you to have gearsets with ridiculous stats to get around level correction, you weren't allowed to melee because you needed to both rest for MP so that you could cast Refresh (and Haste once that came into the picture) and level correction wrecked your melee damage (even with Enspells) to the point of uselessness. Two expansions later, RDM was used as a healer and Cure was added to the rotation of Cure/Refresh/Haste.

Yeah, the artifact gear looked great and we loved the hat, but RDM in FFXI was NOT a good or fun in group content if you went in to mix sword and spell. This was even more grating because our relic and empyrean sets pointed to swordsmanship but did nothing to support it (relic set was the Duelist's set, empyrean set was Estoqueur's set).

I'm absolutely adoring redmage and can't wait to fully convert it into my main! ♥

I'm having some tricky times trying to develop the instinct not to use Jolt when Dualcast is up. On paper it's very simple, but when you're used to other styles of playing it's oddly disorienting.

Nonetheless, yeah, this job is insanely fun and I might main it.

Even after Fleche gets its inevitable nerf.

It lacks some good AoE abilities tho for a mage.
Scatter isn't very a strong AoE ability and isn't even worth using if there's not plenty of mobs, and Enchanted Moulinet is good but you need to build your gauges for it and it takes too much time to just deal AoE damage at the moment you need it, plus usable 3 times max if you have 90/90

It's strong, mobile, and fairly fluid. Overall, it's one of the more fun jobs I've experienced since the SB changes.

But I'll still mourn the spell fencer it could have been, rather than a BLM with a 5s melee burn phase...

RDM is what I've been waiting for since 1.0 so im well chuffed ill be happier when I get to play and lvl it.

Well the AoE damage of RDM is decent enough i would say since you cast one AoE instantly afterwards you normally casted one (its about 800 - 1k damage per dungeon mob at lv 60). Additionally at lv 60 you get the abillity to double your black/white mana. so that you can increase the usage of enchanted moulinet for max 4 times at least.

But i dont see why a RDM should be able to perform the same burst AoE damage like a black mage, since RDM is a hybrid and also able to heal. Its fine as it is.

a DRG / BRD / SMN or whatsoever job isnt also able to perform this much AoE damage (like a blm) either.

/edit but since the damage of healers got pushed in this patch sometimes i feel that a WHM could do the same damage as a rdm but i havent watched this closely enough^^

I actually only went to try out my rdm because I was stuck behind the raubahn wall. And I'm so glad I did, I think I'm going to have to send him a fruit basket!

I absolutely love rdm. It's easily the most I've enjoyed a job since ARR launched.

And as a side perk, although the collar tug is great too, the hair flip on a female char just makes me giggle every time.

I used to be a main summoner. Then Stormblood came around and ruined it for me. But then I tried red mage and realized how fun it was and that I liked it more then I ever liked summoner pre-Stormblood. So that's how I made red mage my main. Thank you Square-enix for nerfing summoner and giving us red mage you showed me what I should have been all along.

Maybe for some, but I was one who stood in defiance to all that and got ahold of gear/food to push through and make it happen anyway. Got me a reputation with certain individuals to seek me out specifically first if available before picking from habitual backliners.

Which comes to the summary of my gripe with this version of Red Mage...not enough swordplay.

I LOVE RED MAGE.

At first I thought it was going to be something I'd try out, shrug at, and go back to WHM or WAR. But, man, once I started fighting enemies, I couldn't keep the grin off my face. That's the type of magic caster I like: effective at a distance, effective in melee, and can heal to boot.

It's the jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than the master of one.

I'll wait for all the RDM spam to go away from PotD and PvP before I venture too much further. Right now every roulette or PotD is SAM/SAM RDM/SAM or RDM/RDM for DPS, which is fine, but since those jobs start at 50, they know absolutely nothing on how to play it, so many of the dungeon runs are just simply facerolls while they spam whatever they think works.

I do think the mechanics of it look a lot more fun than I had hoped. It also helped that the MSQ basically made Alisaie an Red Mage without actually stating it directly (aside from one reference to the male Miqo'te in red.) So you do see Alisaie in far more solo sequences than Alphy in V3.0 content. Alphy is still an Arcanist (not a summoner or scholar since he only summons carbuncle.)

I think it certainly helps the case for a job if one of the MSQ characters has that job. With Alisaie having the Red Mage job, and Gosetsu having the Samurai job, you at least get an idea of what a new job looks like. None of the V3 jobs did this.

I've been waiting for years for Red Mage to be in FFXIV.
Worth the wait.

SMN is doing some good AoE burst. And the ability do double mana has a big CD...

I am enjoying the class so much and I'm waiting to get varhoyly/flare <3. I really miss any "en" spell to use with the sword like the FFXI spells but meh, its a funny job ^^;
