We have 2 updates because one is a patch and the other an expansion.

Just thought I'd say this to make people understand the update process more clearly:

This is a patch + expansion drop. The initial 2.5gb update you get is the 2.0 core system changes (a patch). Ones that everyone gets whether or not they own SB. (Think battle updates, Costa Del Sol swimming etc)

The second 3.5gb update is SB itself (expansion). This is only given to those that own SB. Similar to HW, no need to make people update things they can't use. It can be toggled on/off via the launcher config.

A full expansion + patch is 5.4GB in total on PS4? Has to be a joke. ARR+HW was 10GB+

Heck, even my total size on PS4 with HW is 46 GB

There's bound to be more, right? I mean, the whole expansion couldn't be just 3.6GB.

PS4 allocates free space to ensure future expansions are counted for. You're forgetting the 10 major patches (about 1gb each) XIV has experienced.

on pc the patch is about 6158 mo then.

Alot isn't counted as SB. Swimming, for example, would be in the ARR patch because non-SB players can use it. Same with battle changes, animations, RDM/SAM (though unlock is SB only). Anything people can see without owning SB will be in the patch (Weapon, armour, jobs, job skills etc etc etc)

Just say "Patchspantion" and it'll be clear to everyone. ;)

iirc was HW around 9gb?

So now I'm confused. I saw in another thread that someone said there were two "patches" but I only got one I think. I shut down the launcher and started it again, and it just says the game is unavailable during maintenance.

I did pre-order SB, so I dunno...

What size was the download? I got mine in two downloads for a total of 6.1G. I've seen others say they got theirs in a single 6.1G download. My guess it all depends upon timing at the server as to whether the launcher receives it as one or two.

The launcher streams all available content that is available at the start of the process. They're pretty clever about their batching. If you watch the text of the download, you'll see patch vs ex1 vs ex2 in the download descriptions. For people who started the update early, there may be more content available now. My download was 6.1GB on PC, started about 5 minutes ago.

I got 5.4GB on PS4. 2.x GB on PC where I havn't pre order SB

While it downloaded multiple files, the update was 6158.17 MB in total for me on PC.

well HW was 5 leveling dungeons, 1 MSQ dungeon, and 2 tome dungeons. (3 trials)
so far we're short 1 leveling dungeon, as there will only be 4 leveling dungeons, and we know we get 2 tome dungeons. we dont know if we get a MSQ final dungeon. (and we only know of 2 trials.)
We get 1 main city and the new revenants toll.
we get 6 zones, just like HW.

So for the file size to be so different compared to HW, maybe the amount of voice acting is lowered, and there's a lot of reused assets maybe.
(such as oriental styled building being reused often enough to save space.)
Unless just 1 dungeon makes that much of a difference.

To anyone who has pre ordered sb but is not getting the full patch: have you made sure to go and get early access attached to your account? You should have info on how to do that in an e-mail or on your order receipt. The actual codes for sb aren't out yet, so having early access is likely what is determining who gets what patches.

Post-patch it should be 29GB with HW and SB on PC.

I believe the download is highly compressed. My FF14 file is now 69gb, up from 46gb, thats more than the patch size for sure.

I got mine in MB patch sizes I and I"m on ps4 and got early access. I wonder why some of you got them in GB sizes.

Idk, for some reason I expected a expansion being similar size as a game but I guess I should see it like a DLC pack

Good point, the entire new wall of assets associated with Au Ra was probably damn near a gig of data alone.

Well, guys. No worry about the size. It will grow larger and larger after multiple 4.X updates.

Remember that is likely more updates will come after the Early Access. Certain things are not accessible during this time like the new housing area, so let's not worry too much about the first update eh.

Umm, I have one question. Since I bought SB on steam, it says Pre-purchase bonus content and Stormblood Standard Edition installed but also says Stormblood not installed. What does this mean? I got the patching error and had to delete and re download, mine went from 46gb to 69gb after reinstalling, but the download was definitely compressed as it was only like 28gb when it Dl'd

Pretty much this. Its ~1k or so MBs to make 1 GB. (give or take 100mbs) I approximate more nowadays. So 61XXmbs = 6.1 GBs (in my best approximation.)
