Anyone else think the cap of 900 for tomes should be the future cap?

For the first time since 2.0 I can play more than 1 or 2 classes that I enjoy at the same time. I don't enjoy farming tomes what so ever but at least now I can enjoy playing multiple classes at endgame more freely.

How about we just keep the cap at 900 instead of the old 450 for future "tome" styled content? You still can't gear rush new content anyway.

I think 450 is fine. I would much more like the possibility to have a individual 450 tome cap for each major role (Tanks,Healer,Range,Melee). That way i could gear up multiple classes at the same time.

I think you answered your own question when you said "I don't enjoy farming tomes what so ever".

I'd much rather see an alternate solution that allows people to play multiple classes if they so choose, rather than just encouraging people to grind twice as many tomes during the first couple of months after a major patch.

What stopped you from enjoying more jobs that didn't have i260 tomestone gear? Crafted gear is only 10 iLvls lower, after all.

I totally agree i think 900 is perfect because for me I do not have a main its somethings I feel better healing than I do tanking for instance sophia extreme Im just not gona tank that period , its to many positionals pulse tilts that I just cant focus on all of that at once. So I healed it and was much more comfortable doing it as a healer I dont have mains depending on the instance I may do better on a certain role I dont believe in no cap but 900 gets u chest and pants. 450 is a bit low if even not 900 at least 750 or something like that 450 is just kinda a joke tbh.

In the context that the job pools are going to be increased by two, I can support this.

Especially with the fact that both jobs are dps.

The recipis have insane control requirements and I don't like spending tons of gil on overpriced gear that only 5-10% of the community on my server can make at any given time (yay monopoly). So I usually stick with tome gear unfortunately or whatever current raid gear is. I don't like farming tomes, its true, but usually I don't go out of my way to farm them anymore and I get capped before the end of the week at 450 tomes but with the 900 cap I don't usually reach it at my own pace but I still get more tomes per week with the amount of time I play.

If they made the cap 450 tomes for each class per week, that would still make people choose what class they want to gear up ultimately cause people like me will not be able to go cap 3-4 classes a week. With a 900 straight cap, I don't have to worry about what class I have to play on (especially for things like light farming)... I can choose what gear I need when I need it etc...

Here's the thing with the "alternative solution"... SE has stuck with the same trend of updates since 2.0 and at this point I really don't expect it to change. Even if we provided new solutions which have been suggested over the ages, that still requires them to make new gear sets per patch and they already said that takes alot out of development time. There is no Win/win situation here so they could just easily raise cap by 450 more tomes and be done with it.

Well for one, buying crafted items typically is much more costly and readily replaced, unless you can HQ craft, the need for crafted gear now is pretty pointless. Now if we go back to only getting 450 a week, given it takes 5,760 tomes to gear one class, so 11,520 tomes are needed to gear two classes, at 450 a week it would take 25.6 weeks to gear two classes vs 12.8 at 900 a week.

And given how buying two accessories would cost 990, you can't even gear a second class at equal rate as your main with the tomes being at 900 a week.

Max ilvl of the previous patch is enough to do stuff of the current.. So really you could've been using all jobs all along.

But how is this anything new really? They always cap it at 450 then raise the cap. You can still enjoy the jobs without gear.

You seem to misunderstand something. If you cannot cap 3-4 classes in the previous patch, how am I going to be able to expect to have them ready for the next current content?

Edit: I actually did take a short break mid 2.0 so that makes sense. I don't think a complete removal is a good idea though cause we all know their are players out there who would gear rush.

Im curious cause I posted this lets say you start omega in storm blood ur gearing one job first in my case would be tanks if I have a main it would be close enough. But say I get to the second tier and Im like wow this is hard as hell to tank, well I can also heal high level content as well so what would someone do if according to the content depends on what job you play. I asked this in a thread I posted but I didnt really give the example of what I meant gearing all jobs is a must for me and this will be the first time Ive ever had to do the taking two months to gear one job so Im curious to what someone would do if they had similar issues.

They wouldn't increase the cap unless it works like you could only get X gear with 450 and Y gear with the other 450. I say this cause increasing the cap reduces the time to gear one job in half, since you aren't restricted by the gear you can purchase with the 900, the reality is your ability to gear 2 jobs is still there, it's just the time it takes is longer at 450.

Sorry i know this is off topic but this is something that kinda ticks me off, IF as you say the recipes have "insane" requirements then why do you think the gear is overpriced ? crafting takes a shitton of gil and time to get where you can make this gear you call overpriced, at least if you want to stay up to date, even getting there way late still costs millions, and i don't mean "2" when i say millions. why on earth would anyone spend a fortune to be able to craft stuff just to sell it at a 100k markup selling 1 item a day if he/she could just spend a million for baseline crafting gear , do some 60-1* recipes and earn the same money without spending tens of millions on melding beforehand ?.

on topic, i would sadly have to disagree, IF square would raise the tome cap to 900 a week they would have to raise the costs of items accordingly, which in the end would only mean more farming for the same gear. right now is different, every main is geared, contend is old anyways, but with new contend ? twice the tomes would mean gearing your main twice as fast (assuming no raid gear), but even with raid gear still at least a ton faster then now. Tome caps are NOT there to piss you off, they are there so you take a certain amount of time to gear up, they don't want you to gear up twice as fast , otherwise the items would cost half as much

I think we should go back to the original cap of 250!

...ok no not really. But I actually think 900 is too high, I like to hit the cap by doing a daily expert five days a week. I could go a little higher, but at 900 I'd be frustrated at how much I felt I had to play. In fact, though I did cap two weeks ago at 900, last week I didn't even hit 450 and barely played on this character, because I knew I wouldn't hit 900. Psychology is a big part of these caps.

That is a wholly rational analysis. But again, I got less scripture this week than I had in any week where I was actively playing and the cap was 450. Raising the cap caused me to get less tomestones. It's a direct relationship.

I'm not saying that my stupid emotional logic is the be-all and end-all of game design, but I am saying that having a higher cap actually makes me play the game less. My point is just that there are unintended consequences to these kinds of changes. I'm not the only person who reacts this way.

Also, the thread is about permanently changing the cap, the fact that we're late in Heavensward right now is not relevant.

IMHO if your playing with the idea that "I need to cap before reset!" you are playing for all the wrong reasons. I was just saying that people that have the time to gear and play multiple jobs but cannot play multiple because of ilvl limitations and gear lockouts are unable to. Even more so if they don't play a certain style of content. Some don't raid, some don't like the 24 man, hell some people don't even like getting tomes at all and only use what they get from doing what they do regularly. When the cap was 450, I was usually capped by the end of the week. Now that its 900, I've only been capped one time so far. I thought it was a great way to help gear up extra classes I like to play.

Currently I enjoy:
War (main), BRD, BLM, SCH Untill very recently I could only keep war and bard geared (and bard was not geared very well untill new patch was about to drop). Now I've been able to play all 4 at various content ilvls and I haven't been getting bored of the game for this reason.

If this is the case we might as well have an alt system to where you just replay the game over and over to have the experience of playing a different job. If you give me 15 different jobs thats what we have now I would like to see which ones work best in different situations cant exactly do that if it takes 4 months just to gear two jobs. Two jobs and we have 15 now is just stupid, Im not about a free for all but 900 literally would be like 4 chest pieces on four different jobs in a month, 4 pair of pants another month that sounds very logical to me if someone did this. 450 isnt even enough to buy a hat

It's really not gonna be that bad. They will probably delay the weekly tomes and raid by a couple weeks so people don't feel the need to bumrush to cap just to cap before the first week is up. (Also comes with the perk of not disadvantaging players that don't play during early access) They also did this at the beginning of HW.

The uncapped new tome is usually enough to do the new starter endgame dungeons. Looking at history:

2.0: Castrum & Prae (i42), Wanderer's Palace (i45), Amdapor Keep (i45) Ilvl was added later on but these are the current values they have, just put here for comparison.
Tome: Uncapped Philosophy (Darklight set: i70 role-based)

3.0: ARF (i142), Fractal Continuum & Neverreap (i145)
Tome: Uncapped Law (Doman set: i170 role-based, upgradeable to i180 but was kind of a pain IIRC, I think it was hunts until they changed it)

If they follow the same formula you can gear up all the jobs you want in shared gear and still be able to do the first couple of dungeons. Obviously it might be a bit tough right at launch since you probably won't be able to bulldoze through everything on top of people learning their new job stuff and you will be close to minimum ilvl but you should still be able to gear up the jobs you want and be able clear them at a reasonable speed.

This all goes out the window if they don't follow what they have been doing though.

On topic, I think a role based cap would be good. At least two roles at once, but probably won't happen.

There is a reasoning behind the cap, personally i think 650 would be fine.
I know until the recent cap increase i had wanted more so can gear all jobs, but now that it was raised to 900 i seldom actually cap, lol

This may be true, but it's a factor in how everyone I know plays. Game design is increasingly based on addictive. Giving people a reachable weekly goal makes them happier. Giving people a goal they cannot reach does not. If every player was purely rational, none of this would matter, but we're not. I don't claim to know what the perfect cap is, but I know that there are unintended consequences for raising it. None of us have enough data to know how the cap actually affects player retention. But I know that, if Stormblood has a 900-tomestone cap, I will play it significantly less than I played Heavensward, because I won't be trying to hit the weekly cap. Hitting the cap is rewarding, but I'm not going to seek that reward if I know I won't get it.

EDIT: I think we're too bogged down in details here. I don't actually care what the cap is, or how many tomestones gear costs. If they want to change the cap so you can gear up 10 jobs at once, fine. My only concern is that I can hit that cap in an amount of play time I consider reasonable. One Expert five days a week is very doable. One Expert seven days a week and more tomestones on top of that is too much. So if they do a 900 cap and Experts are worth 180, great. If they keep it at 450 but halve all costs, great. Just let me hit the cap without playing the game like a job.

Hitting a cap should be a natural result of playing normally during the week. Hitting the current 900 tomestone cap is not natural and is liable to cause many to experience burn out. The only reason the cap was raised to 900 was because 3.56 was released at roughly the time when a X.6 patch would intro a new tomestone.

I think you need to reexamine what you consider your non-main classes as to be sufficiently geared. You do not need every class at i260/i270 for them to be properly geared. i235 to i250 should be enough for every job to be considered adequately geared right now.

Due to the strick ilvl requirement system increase every patch, I cannot agree with you. Usually the end game gear/craft gear or high is the entrance gear for the next patch cycle. I don't recall dungeon gear being enough. No I don't expect them to be at the same ilvl but I dont have to worry about requirements for next patch. Why else would they increase the tome cap currently in preperation for stormblood? I can see no other reason than so people can have their other classes ready for it should they choose to. Why can't we do the same for patch cycles?

With a 450 cap thats how long it would take to gear 5 jobs when we have 15 different jobs at some point they are going to have to up the cap simply because of the amount of jobs will end up having. If 5.0 comes and its still 450 then maybe id consider playing something else if they added a new healer and tank or extra dps you cant have a 450 cap if you have 15 to 18 jobs. Hitting a cap means nothing its what you can buy with the tomes , I could careless about hitting the cap as much as I do with the actual piece of gear I can buy. So in your can if it was raised u could still buy your gear you just wouldn't hit the cap so Im struggling to find the issue here.

I'd much rather uncapped tomes carry over to the next week. So say, you miss one week - instead of that being 450 you've missed for good, we have this carry over to 900, then 1,350 etc etc. Makes it easier for people to catch up.

Well, in short, I really don't care about gear, as long as I qualify for the content I do (i.e., not savage/extremes), which is not hard. I queue pretty much exclusively as a healer, so gearing other jobs also isn't a priority. So for me, the 450 cap basically exists as nothing but a weekly goal to meet. All I'm saying is that the mere existence of that goal makes me want to achieve it, and that's not the case if I have to really go out of my way to do so. So the two of us have entirely different priorities.

From my understanding the 450 is set as the estimated gated time equal to what it'll take an average player raiding to acquire similar ilvl gear.
So unless they do something different, I don't know if it's going anywhere.

And with a 900 cap as standard, most wouldn't be gearing 1-2 classes at the same time, they'd more than likely still gear 1 class at a time, just twice as fast.
Then when all the jobs they're interested in are geared, they'll complain there's nothing to do!

Or you know you could just try to pursue savage content which adds another gearing option. Clearing the first floor (like A9S this tier) early as possible ensures you practically don't spend any tomes for any right sides save for maybe 1 ring and any BiS pieces. So if you get your drop, or every 4-weeks that is a free right side.

People complain about "not enough" gear carrots but some don't even want to challenge themselves to go-beyond the free options given. End-game raiders can gear alt jobs much sooner than those who don't do any savage raiding because of extra drops, and when they finally add the tome-gear upgrades to the free raids, our mains are already full 270 likely due to savage weekly upgrades, and that free 24-man raid stuff is for other jobs.

Lastly, 4.0 we are likely to go back to artifact job-only gear as the end-game tome option (Gear that is White Mage only for-example, not Astro or Scholar) for the first-tier. Outside of "law" starter gear, so you'll have to specialize in one-job again for awhile. Unless you do savage, which that gear, like Gordias was for all-roles.

Simple solution: Role based caps.

Put in Tomestones of Fending (VIT), Tomestones of Healing (MND), Tomestones of Striking (STR), Tomestones of Aiming (DEX), Tomestones of Casting (INT). They all only buy the respective stat equipment.

You get Tomes depending on the job you're doing the content on, the cap for each remains at 450 and you can freely convert them at no loss. Got 450 fending tomes that week? You can trade them for 450 striking tomes to be at 0 fending tomes and start over - can't get any more striking tomes for the week, though.
People who play only one job don't get outpaced, people who play multiple jobs got vastly more opportunity to gear them, your job specific cap remains easy to hit. It's not even hard to implement, we already have tome conversion code and code to determine which job you're on.

The big issue is that if you split that, then you'd need to change the way gear drops from savage as well. It's a parity system, tomestones aren't the only way of gearing up and the gates are there for a reason.

I think the real problem is raiders wanting people who don't raid to raid for extra gear, only to complain that they aren't good enough to raid anyway. Tomes are a midcore way of gearing so its not all that likeable. I understand why they think that way since alex savage is still a viable way to get extra gear but lets be honest for a second, how is 450 extra tomes per week going to hurt anyone at all?

Lots of people seem to think this idea of 450 cap per class is a great idea but how often are you actually going to be able to play the class you want doing something like that in order to cap (light farmers will hate it)... Now you got 2-4 different classes you have to "worry" about capping for all the people who think this is some kind of psychological oppression, that would be even worse I thought cause now you got even more caps to worry about in the first place.

I dunno. I haven't capped 900 scripture since maybe the first week the cap was raised? I know I didn't cap last week because I was too focused on crafting and gathering to do my dailies most days. 450 was fine for me. So I had to wait two weeks to get the body piece or the legs. I still managed to have the jobs I play (BRD, DRK, AST, WHM, and sometimes SCH) all at 250+ before patch 3.5. Sure the healers share gear, but it was still doable. I liked the pacing of a 450 cap. And I wasn't just limiting myself to tomestone gear, either.

Tome gear isn't the only option for gearing jobs. Aside from the crafted gear (which it is reasonable to expect it to be expensive, considering the effort and cost that goes into even being able to craft it), there is also 24-man gear, prototype raid gear--which, if you figured out what pieces you wanted, you could end up with at least 2 per week--say, an accessory and a head piece; then save the body/leg tokens and in four weeks, you have the body/legs for either your main job or another one, depending on stats and if you care about that stuff, or just go for the higher ilvl--and the older tomestone gear; even some of the current Expert dungeon gear is fine to substitute until you can get X piece of gear you want.. I was getting at least 2 or 3 pieces of gear a week before they unlocked Alexander normal just from doing roulettes (450 scripture), running Alex normal for tokens, and buying crafted pieces that I could afford.

Unless you are interested in Savage or EX primals, you do not need the highest possible ilvl do content. The highest you would need would be the cap for the 24-man raid. If you don't like doing 24-mans and prefer to stick to 4-man dungeons, bump that cap down about 5-10 points.

All the posts I see about people complaining about scripture caps and I haven't found anything to even spend mine on in weeks lol. If I could give mine away, I would. Cause I'm not using them.

You really need to be more aware of what is actually needed to participate in each patch cycle.

The previous Dungeon gear has always been the minimum expect ilevel for casual content with the previous capped tomestone gear being midcore content gear.

The entry to Heavensward was only expecting i100 to i115 gear. i130 gear was basically transition gear up to level 55. Stormblood is likely to be similar i245 minimum with i270 good until level 65.

They are trying to maintain subscription numbers. By increasing the cap they give those players who want to have multiple of their classes more than sufficiently geared (ie. players like you) a reason to stay subscribbed over this next month and a half.

You do realize that i270 gear will be phased out around level 65 in Stormblood? There is no real reason to try running all 13 classes in A12S. i235 to i250 will be all you need to be properly geared for Stormblood.

Actually you would have geared between 2 and 6 jobs in that time (as only Dragoon and Ninja have exclusive sets, Monk/Samurai and Bard/Machinist share set and Tanks, Healers and Casters each shared by 3 jobs) and solo players would have geared their main fullly on week 6 and might as well unsub until the next patch comes.

You seem to misunderstand something. If you cannot cap 3-4 classes in the previous patch, how am I going to be able to expect to have them ready for the next current content?

When the new patch/tomes roll out, the old one is released and you could quickly gear any remaining jobs. If you need gear for raiding, then you have the possibility of getting raid gear (and thus needing less tome gear per job). If you don't raid, then i230 is enough to do all else in this patch, and can be raised as you go. Alex normal has been opened up for quite some time, right?

And if you happen to raid on many jobs and have a flexible enough group (or use PF) to do so, you could just spread the i260 upgrades out evenly, rather than try to max one job at a time.. Have 5 i250 instead of 1 i260 or whatever.

I'd like to see any time based cap removed entirely.

Let us decide our own caps. Hell leave in the caps but allow us to opt out of them if we wish. I shouldn't feel restricted just because of some other players' bad habits.

Wouldn't it be wise to revamp the gear drops as a whole though? X gear is always replaced with Y gear in the next patch, or the currency is changed to allow X gear to be purchased. Raiding deals with obtaining X item of dropped raid token to obtain raid gear. If tomes were included to he a gate equal to that of players raiding for gear, it doesn't really work. You can get a tome chest piece much quicker than a raid chest piece, all because you can't get a raid chest piece until you unlock the last raid. There isn't much parity if you can get one at a quicker rate or if one is much more flexible to obtain.
