Could you have at least not attached your signature if you wanted to be taken seriously?
Why do people want SAM to be a DPS? WHY? It's hard enough to balance 8 without phasing out one of them into nothingness, adding 9 would be a nightmare. Adding strong big hit DPS is a DRG kinda thing so to copy them would make the SAM class boring, they can't make it into a monk thing then you would have a mirror of a class and finally they can't be a slashing damage DPS cause ninja got that role.
See the problem? Tank would be the best course of action cause tanking is way more important to the game's health than dps.
Tanking makes more sense since generally speaking Samurai in Square Enix games are focused around defending and counterattacking.
It would be quite simple to differentiate it from DRK, too. DRK gets a couple of benefits for parrying, but it isn't focused around the idea of it.
RNG based cooldowns are just bad for tanks. Let's hope you parry that physical tank buster; oh you didn't. You're tanking the floor now~ Maybe you can parry that magical attack better?
DPS makes the most sense for SAM in terms of weapon balance, even with RDM using a sword that still means tanks have 2 sword wielders and DPS only have 1. With SAM as DPS it would be even with tanks.
However, we are currently overloaded with DPS and don't have a lot of tanks or healers, so in terms of actual playstyle diversity in each role DPS has the most while tank and healer have the least.
This puts us in a situation where it's really annoying that we're getting Yet Another sword tank, but if they're insisting on adding SAM in 4.0 then it'd have to be a tank. I actually really like SAM aesthetically and I think it would probably have a cool playstyle no matter which role it filled, but I'm just not a huge fan of the lack of weapon diversity in tanks. DPS get to choose a whole slew of them, and even healers get 3 different weapons, but with tanks it's either sword or axe even with 4 different jobs.
Personally I would prefer if they didn't add SAM at all and added a different tank job with a different weapon. But I do realize that a lot of people want SAM in general so I'm probably in the minority. Regardless of how I feel, though, whatever decision was made for SAM in 4.0 has already been made and there's no changing it.
There are already two threads on first page about SAM being tank or DPS...adding another thread was totally unnecessary.
They're tank players.
they want stuffs for themselves.
The only way I see them making Samurai a tank is if that becomes their solution to Warrior basically being mandatory for raiding. In that sense, it would be PLD vs. DRK and WAR vs. SAM for whoever you bring. Can't say how exactly I feel about that idea since it doesn't solve the problem so much as just introduces another overpowered job to "balance" it.
At this point I don't care either way, since Red Mage was confirmed as not being ruined. People want jobs to be all kinds of things, and while some of those things are stupid and clearly bad ideas (like a primarily melee red mage would have been, much less even more outlandish and idiotic ideas like RDM Tank), Samurai would probably be perfectly represented either way.
At this point all I ask is that they have Gil Toss / Zeniage incorporated into one or two of their moves (a circular aoe enmity attack, for example).
For my part i feel it cheapens the fantasy of a Samurai if your hiding behind someone else to face the enemy head on. They were celebrated warriors of unparalleled skill, unflinching loyalty, and bound by honor and tradition but here DPS enthusiast would have them seen letting their bird TANK for them while jockeying for position behind the enemy like back stabbing cowards. i understand it's a game, but that's what makes it so confusing, you only want to look like the hero but not actually do the job. Samurai means to serve, not slayer, killer, executioner, butcher, rampage, reaper, reaver, or ravage... It's about the ideal isn't it? To stand before what others run from and challenge death?
nin was quite a lot influenced by Naruto, and i'd guess SAM would be influenced by....anime, and SAM in anime are like...never....tanks...they quickly dismember stuff, in sprays of blood....so DPS k thnx, bye.
Or it could be something like Parivir, and be melee-caster (except RDM is already doing that...sort of) or just use mechanic driven elemental attacks, like BLM, except they are still your typical str based melee dps (sort of how nin is, in that they are dex job, that use ninjutsu(geomancy?))
Oh hey, it's not like a recent popular anime that's about an MMO had samurai in it...oh wait...
Log Horizon had Samurai, and it's a tank.

Haven't seen it? Then maybe don't make blanket statements? How it looks doesn't change the fact in the series and it's fictional MMO, the job is a tank.
Plenty of MMO's have tanks that don't look like tanks (WoW's Demon Hunters, Monks. SWTOR's Sith Assassin/Jedi Shadow, Rift's...everything basically, rogue and mage tanks etc.) FFXIV's future tanks don't have to look like tanks if SE doesn't want them to, even then, Samurai still makes perfect sense to wear Fending armor still.
Even tanks in this game don't always look like tanks. DRG's lore set looks more like a tank than the actual Tank Lore set.

Samurai should be a DoH job that spends all its time writing Bushido Scrolls you can use for defensive/offensive party buffs.
Something to compete with using potions.
Also, tons of sarcasm.
whats going to be even more funny is when all the DPS class players start to complain that SAM and WAR dps is too high and makes them look bad xD
Please look forward to it
Sam Iaijutsu dps job, please, K thanks!
Because this next expansion will be incredibly disappointing if there's 2 new jobs that are DPS. Healers and tanks need some love. The assumption right now is that the next job will be Samurai, so people are hoping it's a tank so players who main other roles will have a chance at playing something new.
Not sure about healers right now. As a healer main, I'm close to be pretty disappointed if there's not going to be anything new for us to level this coming expansion.
They have to ditch the tank, DPS, heal set idea for tanks to retain their unique look for this though. Demon Hunter gear in WoW still looks like Demon Hunter, and the Vengeance gets the same benefit from the Havoc DPS gearset.
This would be a good idea for SE to look into, it would be nice to retain your class image. I don't want my PLD/WAR/ whatever to look exactly like each other.
I personally don't see why people want Samurai at all.
Samurai are awesome. Best DPS in single player FF.

I honestly don't care what Samurai come out as on a general theoretical fashion. However I do care if Stormblood drops 2-3 dps classes and nothing else. So if it comes out in 5.0? Make it a dps, whatever. But if its coming out in 4.0? It better be a tank.
This is exactly why future tanks are likely to still share the same fending gear and overall appearance. There is already a lot of different armor classifications in FFXIV, making loot pools very cluttered, and so adding more is a bad idea. There's also a design benefit to tanks/healers sharing their armor which allows people who play those much needed roles to gear multiple tanks/healers. This gives them the freedom to switch tank/healer job fairly seamlessly (barring weapon).
Rather than cluttering the loot pools even more, a simple multi-glamour system would be easier and smarter to implement to solve the issue of tanks looking the same.
So, people want Samurai because they want a class that easily does more DPS than any other DPS job?
Sorry, not trying to be sarcastic, but I've never played as Samurai in any FF game, so I have no clue what they are like (I know what a samurai in the real world is, just not how it translates to these games).
With RDM being a sword wielding-dps, I am seeing a SAM tank being more likely. In either case, I just hope they stop making any more sword-based jobs after SAM is released.
It's plenty of dps already tho
Man those are some bad examples. For one, Auron is never actually referred to as a samurai, and his sphere grid contains such powerful offensive abilities like Guard, and Sentinel....Oops!
Also, ignoring the fact Type-0 was actually a multiplayer title...Jack may have had the highest strength of the characters, but he was built around guarding/counterattacking to do a lot of his damage. Moves that require him to be attacked first. Which role in FFXIV gets attacked the most? Oh yeah, tanks.

Samurai/Shogun def needs to be a tank tho.
DPS doesn't need two new jobs while the others get squat.
I hope Samurai doesn't even get made, with as much of a Tank/DPS debate that's going on it's either gonna upset Tanks and Healers if DPS get 2 new jobs and they get nothing, or the greedy DPS get upset because they want more.
And since we know they aren't gonna be making 4+ classes, not everyone is gonna be happy in this scenario.
I'm sure I'll be staying WAR either way so I don't care that much. Just try an not be so damn greedy about it. Share the love, it's Xmas ain't it?
Because getting 2 DPs is a bad idea.
Because dps is already getting a new job and tanks need more variety. We only had 2 to choose from before DRK showed up. Compare that to the options dps have
